The concept of an inverse problem is a familiar one to most scientists and engineers, particularly in the field of signal and image processing, imaging systems (medical, geophysical, industrial non-destructive testing, etc.) and computer vision. In imaging systems, the aim is not just to estimate unobserved images, but also their geometric characteristics from observed quantities that are linked to these unobserved quantities through the forward problem. This book focuses on imagery and vision problems that can be clearly written in terms of an inverse problem where an estimate for the image and its geometrical attributes (contours and regions) is sought. The chapters of this book use a consistent methodology to examine inverse problems such as: noise removal; restoration by deconvolution; 2D or 3D reconstruction in X-ray, tomography or microwave imaging; reconstruction of the surface of a 3D object using X-ray tomography or making use of its shading; reconstruction of the surface of a 3D landscape based on several satellite photos; super-resolution; motion estimation in a sequence of images; separation of several images mixed using instruments with different sensitivities or transfer functions; and more.

Attom Areej, Shadad Ibrahim Occupational Exposure in Interventional Cardiology

The number of cardiology interventional procedures has significantly increased recently. This is due to the reliability of the diagnostic equipment to diagnose many heart diseases. In the procedures the x-ray used results in increasing radiation doses to the staff. The cardiologists and other staff members in interventional cardiology are usually working close to the area under examination and receive the dose primarily from scattered radiation from the patient. Therefore workers in interventional cardiology are expected to receive high doses. This study estimated occupational annual doses recieved by workers in three cardiology centres compared with that received by workers in other medical practices (radiotherapy, nuclear medicine and diagnostic radiology)in the Institute of Nuclear Medicine and Technology (INMO). Thermoluminescence dosimeters were used for the estimation of Hp(10). The effective doses were then calculated from the two dosimeter readings over and under the apron.

Björn Eskofier Non-Rigid 3D SPECT/CT Image Registration

For the clinical diagnosis of myocardial perfusion images there is a need to register 3D datasets originating from different modalities. CT datasets provide good resolution of anatomic structures and are needed for attenuation and scatter correction during the process of SPECT image reconstruction. It is mandatory for this process to have CT and SPECT 3D volumes realigned properly so that reconstruction algorithms can provide physicians with valuable data. Several rigid registration techniques are implemented in commercial solutions for hospitals. These techniques cannot take into account any non-rigid deformations, which may occur e.g. because of respiratory motion, the beating of the heart or shifts of the patient. This book shows the use of integrating a non-rigid registration approach into the process of reconstructing SPECT datasets of the myocardium. The results of the optimization of this process, as well as its application to clinical images are discussed. Besides an overview of related works and patents in the field of non-rigid image registration, this book presents the theoretic background needed to understand the concepts and methods behind this kind of registration.

With the advent of the digital computer and the subsequent development of powerful and cost-effective microcomputers, the possibility of replacing conventional films as a photon detector took a big leap forward. The introduction of digital imaging has revolutionized the field of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology. In this new imaging modality, the radiographic film is replaced by a sensor. The signal temporarily stored within the sensors is transferred to the computer, which displays the image that can be interpreted, manipulated, quantified and stored. Dose reduction often has been emphasized as one of the biggest advantages of digital radiography followed by computer aided image interpretation and image enhancement in addition to the obvious options of standardized image activity and image retrieval. The Digital Imaging proves to be environmental friendly as no processing chemicals are required. Moreover, the working time from image exposure to display is reduced considerably. Further developments and researches are being made in the field of these digital imaging receptor systems. In a decade or two, these digital imaging systems can entirely replace two dimensional analog films.

Image processing and image analysis are typically important fields in information science and technology. By “image processing”, we generally understand all kinds of operation performed on images (or sequences of images) in order to increase their quality, restore their original content, emphasize some particular aspect of the information or optimize their transmission, or to perform radiometric and/or spatial analysis. By “image analysis” we understand, however, all kinds of operation performed on images (or sequences of images) in order to extract qualitative or quantitative data, perform measurements and apply statistical analysis. Whereas there are nowadays many books dealing with image processing, only a small number deal with image analysis. The methods and techniques involved in these fields of course have a wide range of applications in our daily world: industrial vision, material imaging, medical imaging, biological imaging, multimedia applications, satellite imaging, quality control, traffic control, and so on

Nowadays high definition imaging is an important issue in satellite projects and cameras. Several countries are trying to implement better imaging device for their applications, such as satellite applications. For example, forecasting, army, forests and etc. In this book a brief discussion is presented for imaging device and then a method is used for reducing the fixed pattern noise (FPN) in image detector. The method that is presented in the following uses a column shifting technique to correct the fixed pattern noise in an image sensor. FPN is an important parameter in imaging devices such as CCD or CMOS. These imaging sensors have widespread applications, such as star trackers, visible and IR imaging devices. Therefore the precision improvement is an important factor in their performance. In addition, the block diagram structure of imaging detector is fully studied in chapter 1 to 3 and then a method has been presented to reduce the FPN noise.

Unrelieved chronic pain is a worldwide epidemic Chronic pain has been subject to multiple international initiatives through the World Health Organization. Interventional Pain Medicine, the use of minimally invasive techniques to relieve pain, is the best approach when simpler measures such as physical therapy or medications fail. However, these procedures can be associated with significant risk and expense. Establishing uniformity in diagnostic criteria and procedural performance can reduce both morbidity and unnecessary procedures, and hence healthcare expenditures. While other texts explain how to perform these procedures, little focus has been given to diagnostic considerations: if and when these procedures should be performed. Evidence-Based Interventional Pain Medicine focuses on a balance between effectiveness and safety of interventional management for specific diagnoses, across all areas of chronic pain including: Head, neck and shoulder pain Lower back pain Neuropathic pain syndromes Complex Regional Pain Syndrome Pain in patients with cancer Vascular and visceral pain Evidence-Based Interventional Pain Medicine provides essential knowledge for anyone who uses, or intends to use, interventional pain techniques.

Moments as projections of an image’s intensity onto a proper polynomial basis can be applied to many different aspects of image processing. These include invariant pattern recognition, image normalization, image registration, focus/ defocus measurement, and watermarking. This book presents a survey of both recent and traditional image analysis and pattern recognition methods, based on image moments, and offers new concepts of invariants to linear filtering and implicit invariants. In addition to the theory, attention is paid to efficient algorithms for moment computation in a discrete domain, and to computational aspects of orthogonal moments. The authors also illustrate the theory through practical examples, demonstrating moment invariants in real applications across computer vision, remote sensing and medical imaging. Key features: Presents a systematic review of the basic definitions and properties of moments covering geometric moments and complex moments. Considers invariants to traditional transforms – translation, rotation, scaling, and affine transform – from a new point of view, which offers new possibilities of designing optimal sets of invariants. Reviews and extends a recent field of invariants with respect to convolution/blurring. Introduces implicit moment invariants as a tool for recognizing elastically deformed objects. Compares various classes of orthogonal moments (Legendre, Zernike, Fourier-Mellin, Chebyshev, among others) and demonstrates their application to image reconstruction from moments. Offers comprehensive advice on the construction of various invariants illustrated with practical examples. Includes an accompanying website providing efficient numerical algorithms for moment computation and for constructing invariants of various kinds, with about 250 slides suitable for a graduate university course. Moments and Moment Invariants in Pattern Recognition is ideal for researchers and engineers involved in pattern recognition in medical imaging, remote sensing, robotics and computer vision. Post graduate students in image processing and pattern recognition will also find the book of interest.

Seok Lee, Frank Chongwoo Park Geometric Optimization Problems in Computer Vision . Medical Imaging

We explore various optimization problems which appear in computer vision and image processing. By exploiting the geometric structure of the underlying search spaces, we develop more efficient and robust ways to find optimal solutions. We present the Nelder-Mead algorithms on Lie groups and describe its application to medical image registration. A widely used approach to image registration involves finding the transformation that maximizes the mutual information between two images, with the transformation restricted to be either rigid-body (i.e., belonging to SE(3)) or volume-preserving (i.e., belonging to SL(3)). We present coordinate-invariant, geometric versions of the Nelder-Mead optimization algorithm on the transformation groups SL(3), SE(3), and its various subgroups, that are applicable to a wide class of image registration problems. Because the algorithms respect the geometric structure of the underlying transformation groups, they are numerically more stable, and exhibit better convergence properties than existing local coordinate-based algorithms. Experimental results demonstrate the improved convergence properties of our geometrics algorithm.

Authored by a university professor deeply involved in X-ray diffraction-related research, this textbook is based on his lectures given to graduate students for more than 20 years. It adopts a well-balanced approach, describing basic concepts and experimental techniques, which make X-ray diffraction an unsurpassed method for studying the structure of materials. Both dynamical and kinematic X-ray diffraction is considered from a unified viewpoint, in which the dynamical diffraction in single-scattering approximation serves as a bridge between these two parts. The text emphasizes the fundamental laws that govern the interaction of X-rays with matter, but also covers in detail classical and modern applications, e.g., line broadening, texture and strain/stress analyses, X-ray mapping in reciprocal space, high-resolution X-ray diffraction in the spatial and wave vector domains, X-ray focusing, inelastic and time-resolved X-ray scattering. This unique scope, in combination with otherwise hard-to-find information on analytic expressions for simulating X-ray diffraction profiles in thin-film heterostructures, X-ray interaction with phonons, coherent scattering of Mossbauer radiation, and energy-variable X-ray diffraction, makes the book indispensable for any serious user of X-ray diffraction techniques. Compact and self-contained, this textbook is suitable for students taking X-ray diffraction courses towards specialization in materials science, physics, chemistry, or biology. Numerous clear-cut illustrations, an easy-to-read style of writing, as well as rather short, easily digestible chapters all facilitate comprehension.

Jean-Charles Pinoli Mathematical Foundations of Image Processing and Analysis, Volume 2

Mathematical Imaging is currently a rapidly growing field in applied mathematics, with an increasing need for theoretical mathematics. This book, the second of two volumes, emphasizes the role of mathematics as a rigorous basis for imaging sciences. It provides a comprehensive and convenient overview of the key mathematical concepts, notions, tools and frameworks involved in the various fields of gray-tone and binary image processing and analysis, by proposing a large, but coherent, set of symbols and notations, a complete list of subjects and a detailed bibliography. It establishes a bridge between the pure and applied mathematical disciplines, and the processing and analysis of gray-tone and binary images. It is accessible to readers who have neither extensive mathematical training, nor peer knowledge in Image Processing and Analysis. It is a self-contained book focusing on the mathematical notions, concepts, operations, structures, and frameworks that are beyond or involved in Image Processing and Analysis. The notations are simplified as far as possible in order to be more explicative and consistent throughout the book and the mathematical aspects are systematically discussed in the image processing and analysis context, through practical examples or concrete illustrations. Conversely, the discussed applicative issues allow the role of mathematics to be highlighted. Written for a broad audience – students, mathematicians, image processing and analysis specialists, as well as other scientists and practitioners – the author hopes that readers will find their own way of using the book, thus providing a mathematical companion that can help mathematicians become more familiar with image processing and analysis, and likewise, image processing and image analysis scientists, researchers and engineers gain a deeper understanding of mathematical notions and concepts.
