Discipline problems, limited resources, crowded classrooms. Teachers face many issues each day that can wear down their love of education. How can they stay focused and energized day in and day out?In Totally Positive Teaching, Joseph Ciaccio shares an approach that transformed him from a burned-out veteran teacher struggling joylessly through each day to a professional who has fun with his students, guiding them to success while enjoying the teaching process. The conviction that people can adopt a new attitude is at the heart of Ciaccio's Totally Positive Approach. When teachers enter the classroom with an upbeat attitude supported by constructive teaching techniques, they can build trusting partnerships with students. Ciaccio describes five techniques for creating a daily positive learning experience that nurtures student achievement:• Devise activities to meet the mutual needs of student and teacher.• Change personal counterproductive feelings.• Respond to behavior problems with self-discipline.• Help underachievers become self-motivated.• Develop instructional strategies to keep students engaged.Ciaccio provides plenty of examples to illustrate how these techniques actually work in the classroom. He also includes dozens of strategies and tips for introducing the Totally Positive Approach and making it take hold in your own work. When teachers use the Totally Positive Approach, students gain confidence, take control of their lives, and feel that they belong. Creativity is a hot topic in education. As such, there is no shortage of insights or suggestionsfor how teachers might incorporate creativity into their curriculum. Wadingthrough these suggestions can, however, be quite daunting. This is because many ofthese suggestions imply that teachers need to somehow radically change their approachto teaching, adopt a new curriculum, or add-on to their existing curriculum. Consequently, many teachers feel that such changes are not feasible and may even come at thecost of supporting students' academic learning. This book provides an alternative. Teachers need not adopt a new curriculum, radicallychange what they are already doing, or attempt to add more to their already overflowingplate of curricular responsibilities. Rather, teaching for and with creativity is often more about doing what one is alreadydoing, only slightly better. The aim of this book is to help teachers understand how they can make slight changes to their own teaching, which can substantiallysupport the development of students' creative potential and result in a more creative approach to teaching. Theinsights and practical suggestions presented in this book represent some of the newest and most promising work being donein the field of creativity studies. This book is unique in that it presents teachers with concrete ideas for how to simultaneouslysupport creativity and learning. A particularly novel feature of this book is that it offers a blend of theoretical insig...

Involved as it is with 95% of the periodic table, inorganic chemistry is one of the foundational subjects of scientific study. Inorganic catalysts are used in crucial industrial processes and the field, to a significant extent, also forms the basis of nanotechnology. Unfortunately, the subject is not a popular one for undergraduates. This book aims to take a step to change this state of affairs by presenting a mechanistic, logical introduction to the subject. Organic teaching places heavy emphasis on reaction mechanisms – «arrow-pushing» – and the authors of this book have found that a mechanistic approach works just as well for elementary inorganic chemistry. As opposed to listening to formal lectures or learning the material by heart, by teaching students to recognize common inorganic species as electrophiles and nucleophiles, coupled with organic-style arrow-pushing, this book serves as a gentle and stimulating introduction to inorganic chemistry, providing students with the knowledge and opportunity to solve inorganic reaction mechanisms. • The first book to apply the arrow-pushing method to inorganic chemistry teaching • With the reaction mechanisms approach («arrow-pushing»), students will no longer have to rely on memorization as a device for learning this subject, but will instead have a logical foundation for this area of study • Teaches students to recognize common inorganic species as electrophiles and nucleophiles, coupled with organic-style arrow-pushing • Provides a degree of integration with what students learn in organic chemistry, facilitating learning of this subject • Serves as an invaluable companion to any introductory inorganic chemistry textbook

Joseph Bonem M. Problem Solving for Process Operators and Specialists

This book provides methods to train process operators to solve challenging problems. The book is split into two parts. The first part consists of two parts; first developing a daily monitoring system and second providing a structured 5 step problem solving approach that combines cause and effect problem solving thinking with the formulation of theoretically correct hypotheses. The 5 step approach emphasizes the classical problem solving approach (defining the sequence of events) with the addition of the steps of formulating a theoretically correct working hypothesis, providing a means to test the hypothesis, and providing a foolproof means to eliminate the problem. The initial part of the book focuses on defining the problem that must be solved and obtaining the location, time and quantity based specifications of the problem. This part of the book also presents techniques to find and define problems at an early point before they progress to the critical level. The second part of the book deals with the utilization of fundamental chemical engineering skills to develop a technically correct working hypothesis that is the key to successful problem solving. The primary emphasis is on simple pragmatic calculation techniques that are theoretically correct. It is believed that any operator can perform these calculations if he is provided the correct prototype. Throughout the book, the theory behind each pragmatic calculation technique is explained in understandable terms prior to presenting the author's approach. These techniques have been developed by the author in 50+ years of industrial experience. The book includes many sample problems and examples of real world problem solving. Using these techniques, theoretically correct working hypotheses can be developed in an expedient fashion.

Other Emptiness is the view of emptiness that goes with wisdom. It has long been thought amongst Westerners that the view of emptiness championed by the Gelug tradition following the views of Tsongkhapa is the one and only view of emptiness in the Buddhist teachings. However, that is not the case. The majority of Tibetan Buddhists accept two approaches to emptiness, a logical approach called empty of self and a non-conceptual approach called empty of other. This book clearly presents all of these views and shows how the empty of other type of emptiness is actually the ultimate teaching of the Buddha, the teaching on how to enter non-dual wisdom.Other emptiness has usually been thought of amongst Westerners who have heard of it as a very complicated and difficult philosophy. It is subtle, that is true, because it describes what it is like to be in wisdom. However, it was not taught as a difficult philosophy. Rather, it was taught as a practical teaching on how to enter non-dual wisdom. The book explores this point at length. The book was written to be useful for all levels of reader. It starts simply, giving a clear explanation of the Buddha's non-dual teaching and how the other emptiness teaching is part of that. Then it goes into details about the history and teaching other emptiness. Finally, it goes in to great technical detail concerning the other emptiness teaching, and supports that with extensive materials from various Tibetan teachers. Unlike many of the books on o...

Teaching is not merely a technical process- it is one that requires creative and inspirationalthinking, not only on the part of students but for teachers themselves as artful, reflective beings. The purpose of this book is to provide educators with creative experiences which unlock theirimaginative potential so they can re-envision their curriculum to promote active learning, culturally relevant pedagogy, and differentiated instruction. This book guides the reader through a series of experiences intended to tap into the right side ofthe brain, and provide educators opportunities to re-imagine their existing curriculum in newways. Through this re-imaging (or re-envisioning) of the creative potential within themselves, teachers can redesign their curricula in ways that best meet the needs of their learners, schools, and communities. This book emphasizes creativity in teaching as a collaborative effort. Theexperiences and ideas presented in this book are intended to inspire small groups or whole communities (including schools) to worktogether and support each other in their creative efforts. Creativity does not just exist for individuals in isolated contemplation butresides instead in the relational work that community members create together toward a shared vision. In order to encourageimaginative students who will have the capacities to see the world, not merely as it is, but as it could be, we need to encourage teachersto tap into their creative imaginative capacities to teach as ...

Seminar paper from the year 2009 in the subject Psychology - Learning Psychology, Intelligence Research, grade: A, Atlantic International University, course: Master degree Program, language: English, abstract: The Freirean approach to adult literacy education centre on learners' cultural and personal experiences. Freirean was the name for Brazilian educator Paulo Freire, the approach is also referred to as the problem-posing approach (Auerbach & Wallerstein, 1987;Wallerstein, 1983), the psycho-social approach (Hope, Timmel, & Hodzi, 1984; Fargo, 1981), the learner-centered approach (Anorve, 1989), the liberatory approach (Shor & Freire, 1987; Facundo, 1984), and the participatory approach (Jurmo, 1987). It has been used in the developing world in successful native and second language literacy projects sponsored by governments and international voluntary organizations in both rural and urban settings. In the United States, many community-based organizations have used the approach in their nonformal educational programs for developing basic literacy in English, native languages other than English, and English as a second language. Because the Freirean approach goes by a number of different names and Freire's ideas have had such an impact on adult education internationally, there are many literacy educators in the United States who have incorporated elements of the approach into their teaching without realizing that they have been influenced by Paulo Freire. ...

Document from the year 1991 in the subject Pedagogy - Miscellaneous Topics, grade: A, University of the West Indies (School of Education), course: Teaching of English - Methods, language: English, abstract: This paper will examine the purpose and value of summarizing through a close study of the various areas in which this skill proves to be essential and useful and will present an approach for teaching summary writing which will make it interesting and instructive to students. It proposes a teaching method which will afford students the opportunity to practice summarizing in a number of areas and for a range of different purposes, with the aim of helping them to see for themselves and to appreciate the practical benefits of being able to summarize. The teacher must use a combination of visual and aural aids in order to stimulate interest and increase motivation. It is recommended that the unit be divided into fourteen lessons; six of 35 minutes and eight of 70 minutes duration to be taught over a period of six weeks. While the subject will not have been exhausted in these fourteen lessons, students will have been provided with adequate foundation to assist them in becoming good summary writers. It is hoped that by the end of the unit students will have come to a realization of the purpose and value of summarizing in everyday life, in school and in the world of work.

This book is a gentle but rigorous introduction to Formal Logic. It is intended primarily for use at the college level. However, it can also be used for advanced secondary school students, and it can be used at the start of graduate school for those who have not yet seen the material. The approach to teaching logic used here emerged from more than 20 years of teaching logic to students at Stanford University and from teaching logic to tens of thousands of others via online courses on the World Wide Web. The approach differs from that taken by other books in logic in two essential ways, one having to do with content, the other with form.Like many other books on logic, this one covers logical syntax and semantics and proof theory plus induction. However, unlike other books, this book begins with Herbrand semantics rather than the more traditional Tarskian semantics. This approach makes the material considerably easier for students to understand and leaves them with a deeper understanding of what logic is all about. In addition to this text, there are online exercises (with automated grading), online logic tools and applications, online videos of lectures, and an online forum for discussion. They are available at logic.stanford.edu/intrologic/Table of Contents: Introduction / Propositional Logic / Satisfiability / Propositional Proofs / Propositional Resolution / Relational Logic / Relational Logic Proofs / Resolution / Induction / Equality

"Dee Fink challenges our conventional assumptions and practices and offers an insightful approach to expanding our learning goals, making higher education more meaningful. This is a gem of a book that every college teacher should read." —Ken Bain, author, What the Best College Students Do Since the original publication of L. Dee Fink's Creating Significant Learning Experiences, higher education has continued to move in two opposite directions: more institutions encourage faculty to focus on research, obtaining grants, and publishing, while accreditation agencies, policy-makers, and students themselves emphasize the need for greater attention to the quality of teaching and learning. Now the author has updated his bestselling classic, providing busy faculty with invaluable conceptual and procedural tools for instructional design. Step by step, Fink shows how to use a taxonomy of significant learning and systematically combine the best research-based practices for learning-centered teaching with a teaching strategy in a way that results in powerful learning experiences. This edition addresses new research on how people learn, active learning, and student engagement; includes illustrative examples from online teaching; and reports on the effectiveness of Fink's time-tested model. Fink also explores recent changes in higher education nationally and internationally and offers more proven strategies for dealing with student resistance to innovative teaching. Tapping into the knowledge, tools, and strategies in Creating Significant Learning Experiences empowers educators to creatively design courses that will result in significant learning for their students. «As thought-provoking and inspiring today as it was when it was first published, it is a 'must' for anyone serious about creating courses that challenge students to learn deeply.» —Elizabeth F. Barkley, author, Student Engagement Techniques

Despite four decades of good faith effort to teach ethics in business schools, you'll still find today headlines about egregious excess and scandal. It becomes reasonable to ask why these efforts have not been working. Business faculty in ethics courses spend a lot of time teaching theories of ethical reasoning and analyzing those big, thorny dilemmas-triggering what one professor called "ethics fatigue." But what if faculty stopped focusing on ethical analysis and focused on a new curriculum-one that builds a conversation across the core curriculum (not only in ethics courses) and also provides the teaching aids for a new way of thinking about ethics education? This is where Giving Voice to Values (GVV) comes in-the GVV curriculum asks the question: "What if I were going to act on my values? What would I say and do? How could I be most effective?" This book will help faculty across the business curriculum with examples, strategies, and assistance in applying the GVV approach. In addition to an introductory chapter, which explains the rationale and strategy behind GVV, there are twelve individual chapters by faculty from the major business functional areas and from faculty representing different geographic regions. The book is a useful guide for faculty from any business discipline on HOW to use the GVV approach in his or her teaching.

Moreover, school inspection provides policy and decision makers with accurate information about the current state of education in their respective institutions. The main purpose of this study is to examine and determine the impact of school inspection on teaching and learning in Dubai-based private schools, and to give some recommendations into how to conduct effective school inspection that would positively influence teaching and learning. This research included 37 participants; 2 inspectors, 4 head-teachers and 31 teachers, from 4 private schools, who follow different types of curricula, from all grades of performance according to inspection reports conducted in the 2014/2015 academic year. The findings show that school inspection has a significant role in school improvement, especially in teaching and learning. Teachers acknowledge the feedback that inspectors give to them. However, school inspection also has a negative impact on teaching and learning; for instance, it forces some schools to show activities they have never done before. Moreover, the school inspection reports and recommendations, in some cases, are superficial and are not related to the school context; moreover, they often do not show teac...
