John Franceschina Incidental and Dance Music in the American Theatre from 1786 to 1923. Volume 3, Biographical and Critical Commentary - Alphabetical Listings from Edgar Stillman Kelley to Charles Zimmerman

Incidental and Dance Music in the American Theatre from 1786 to 1923 constitutes the first three volumes of a critical survey of incidental and dance music arrangers in the American theatre: what they did and how they did it from the early days of the American musical theatre through the musicals of the millennium. Since no book currently exists that chronicles the art of arranging incidental and dance music in the American theatre, it is the aim of this text to fill an important gap in musical theatre scholarship in language that is easily accessible yet rich in descriptive analysis. In addition, since many successful dance music arrangers were also film composers, it is the hope that this book might appeal to a readership that extends beyond libraries, musical theatre aficionados and students. The first series, from 1786 through 1923 treats incidental and dance music through the emergence of jazz on the Broadway stage. Future series include Incidental and Dance Music in the American Theatre from 1924 (No, No, Nanette) to 1966 (Cabaret) and Incidental and Dance Music in the American Theatre from 1967 (Hair) to 2015 (Hamilton). Each three-volume series includes introductory essays, chronologies, biographical and critical commentaries, and musical examples drawn from published and manuscript sources.

The floor, the movement (together), the human interaction, the tactile, the music, and emotions; all are there and so much more. Every dance is in the beginner's mind. The next time it is done is the only time it is done. Symmetry and beauty. Reading these poems is a superposition of me, the reader, and the visceral feeling of the book. It is Dancing.

Gerhard Kubik Angola in the Black Cultural Expressions of Brazil

The transplantation of African musical cultures to the Americas was a multi-track and multi-time process. In the past many historical studies of African diaspora music, dance and other aspects of expressive culture concentrated on events in the Americas. What happened before the American trauma and simultaneously in Africa was often looked at unhistorically. In this book, world-renowned ethnomusicologist Gerhard Kubik considers African music and dance forms as the products of people living in various African cultures which have changed continuously in history, absorbing and processing elements from inside and outside the continent, creating new styles and fashions all the time. African diaspora music then appears as a consequent and creative extension overseas of African musical cultures that have existed in the period between the sixteenth and the twentieth century. From this perspective African diaspora music cannot be described adequately in terms of "retentions" and "survivals," as if African cultures in the Americas were doomed from the outset and perhaps only by some act of mercy permitted to "retain" certain elements. Using field research and documentary sources, Kubik tracks down some aspects of the Angolan dimension in the panorama of African music and dance cultures in Brazil, and also addresses methodology applicable in the wider context of African diaspora cultural studies.

Emma Johnston Healing Maori Through Song and Dance

This book investigates the way "healing" may be seen to be represented and enacted by three recent New Zealand music theatre productions: Once Were Warriors, the Musical-Drama; The Whale Rider, On Stage; and Footprints/Tapuwae, a bicultural opera. It addresses the ways each of these music theatre productions can be seen to dramatise ideologically informed notions of Maori cultural health through the encounter of Maori performance practices with American and European music theatre forms. Because the original colonial encounter between Maori and Pakeha was a wounding process, it may be that in order to construct a theatrical meeting between the "colonised" and the "colonial", "healing" is an essential element by which to foster an idea of the post-colonial, bicultural togetherness of the nation. In all three productions, Maori song and dance forms are incorporated into a distinctive form of western theatre: the American musical; the international spectacle; Wagnerian opera. Wagner's attempts to regenerate German culture through his music dramas can be compared to Maori renaissance idea(l)s of cultural "healing" through a "return" to Maori myths, traditions and song and dance.

Between Zones explores the possibilities of documenting time-based works. Examining the intersection of disciplines such as sculpture and installation, or reproducible media, such as film and photography, with the fields of dance, music and performance art, this publication outlines the theoretical underpinnings of these relationships. Based on her own practice as a documenter of the Judson Dance Theater, Babette Mangolte examines the relationship between movement and speed in the filming of performative processes; Raphael Gygax posits the notion that performances, their installation venues and the objects involved may be read as rituals, places of ritual and relics; and Verena Kuni investigates themes of temporality and transience in art, sound and music. These represent just a sampling of the diverse essays included in this book, by a range of scholars and practitioners in the performance fields.

Genussov Michal Transcription and classification of music

Transcription of music and classification of audio and speech data are two important tasks in audio signal processing. Transcription of polyphonic music involves identifying the fundamental frequencies (pitches) of several notes played at a time. Its difficulty stems from the fact that harmonics of different tones tend to overlap, especially in western music. In this thesis, we introduce transcription and classification methods which are based on representation of the data in a meaningful manner. For transcription of polyphonic music we present an algorithm based on sparse representations in a structured dictionary, suitable for the spectra of music signals. For classification of audio data we propose to integrate into traditional classification methods a non-linear manifold learning technique, namely "diffusion maps". Finally, we examine empirically the performances of the proposed solutions.

Bimal Phukan Srimanta Sankaradeva. Vaishnava Saint of Assam

Sankaradeva’s 16th century ‘figured silk’ tapestries, known as Vrindavani Vastra, today adorn museums of the world including those at London, Paris and Los Angeles. However, Srimanta Sankaradeva, the Vashnava Saint of Assam, is revered most as a religious reformer. A contemporary of Kabir, Nanak and Chaitanya, Sankaradeva is one of the religious leaders of great endowment who blazed across the Indian horizon in the 15th century bearing the message of bhakti to the people.Sankaradeva (1469-1568) was a man of creativity, and above all, he was a man of religion. His literary and artistic activities are not ends in themselves; they are consciously oriented towards the sharing of his creed. His work – be it a hymn, a verse for chanting, dramas for the stage, dance forms, or even a drum for accompaniment – was only to draw his audience to the word of God. That he performed each task with consummate excellence is a measure of his greatness. His key literary texts are a part of every Assamese household and his dance forms are today a part of classical canon of Indian dance traditions. It remains a pity that despite his great achievements, Sankaradeva is relatively unknown outside his native state of Assam. This book attempts to give an overview of the life and works of the multi-faceted genius encompassing art, literature, music, dance and drama.

Music and Jewish Religious Experience offers six studies on specific aspects and functions of Jewish sacred music, both social and theological. Rather than following a single theme or building on a sustained thesis, this book covers a variety of subjects, ranging from music and prophecy to social uses of synagogue song. Each chapter can be read on its own, and is intended to stimulate thought-and hopefully further research-on its particular topic. Taken as a whole, these independent studies reveal the complexity and diversity of types, contexts, and uses of Jewish sacred music. The central aim of this volume is to provide the reader with fresh insights into specialized areas of Jewish musical investigation, and to demonstrate the broader meanings and value of music in Jewish religious life.

The music helped to create a diversion from the painful realities of the Great Depression and a world at war.It was compelling music with catchy arrangements to dance and dream to at ballrooms all across America. The music was both sweet and hot. Each band had a distinct sound and personality that was immediately recognizable. It was their calling card. Whenever the music was played on records in jukeboxes or were broadcast live on radio from far distant ballrooms, listeners could immediately identify what band was playing. Young people followed bands so closely they knew so well the personnel of their favorite bands in much the same way as baseball fans knew the starting line-up and batting averages of players on their favorite team. Each orchestra’s sound and personality was certainly brought about by the instrumentalists and singers and by the arrangers who wrote the scores, but at the heart of each of the bands was its bandleader.Author Stephen Fratallone provides readers with glimpses into the heart and soul of some of the most popular bandleaders from the Big Band Era in his latest book for BearManor Media, Connections in Swing, Volume One: The Bandleaders. Rhetorical Moves presents ground-breaking research theorizing for the first time the dancer as a rhetor and in the process documents a new way to conceive of embodiment. Research is centered in the embodied experience of the dancer whose voice in the action of performance is reclaimed. By transplanting the framework of a rhetorical situation onto a dance performance, Dr. Cynthia Roses-Thema analyzes how the dancer utilizes interoceptive, exteroceptive, and proprioceptive bodily perception networks to create onstage movement. The result has important implications for dance professionals. If you are a dancer, this book gives you new insight into how you negotiate the many variables of embodiment during performance. If you are a dance teacher, this study provides you with information on the dynamics of dancer perception and attentional flow during the course of performance that will inform your pedagogical practices. If you are a dance researcher, Dr. Roses-Thema has opened a new field of inquiry into dance studies ripe with research possibilities.Rhetorical Moves demonstrates the depth and breadth the dancer experiences onstage and is a must read for all dance enthusiasts.

Angela Hund-Göschel Music Sponsorship at a Turning Point

Sponsorship has become an established tool within the marketing mix of many companies. A sponsorship can provide significant benefits for companies and brands, e. g. by increasing awareness and generating image transfers and thereby activating (potential) customers and multipliers. In Germany, a large number of companies have experiences as a sponsor and dedicate a substantial share of their communication budget to sponsorships - often primarily in the sports market. However, recent developments like numerous doping scandals caused a shift of public interest in favour of other areas, e. g. culture. And since the latter market continuously gains relevance and is being covered by media, it has become more attractive for sponsors, too.Within the cultural area, music plays a central role in western cultures and has the potential to grow even further. Due to fast spreading new technologies like the Internet and the overall digitalisation, music has become accessible practically everywhere and for everyone. At the same time, the structure of the music industry, the roles of market participants as well as existing business models are subject to drastic changes. In conjunction with the increasing variety of potential music sponsoring measures, the present development provides new chances and risks for sponsors. This work examines how companies can take advantage of the latest developments within the music industry regarding sponsorship. Situating Inquiry. Expanded Venues for Music Education Research

This volume of Advances in Music Education Research with the idea of research as "situated inquiry."We intend this metaphor to stand for a general description of the contextualized processes music education researchers use to frame, generate, augmentand refine knowledge. The works in this volume illustrate the many ways in which knowledge has been constructed out of multiple approaches tostudying an idea or exploring questions. All seek to expand our knowledge of music education in some form. How we go about engaging in knowledge construction, and what we learn from the different processes involved, is a function of the activities, contexts, and cultures in which our work is "situated." Both knowledge and action is "located," that is, research is placed, positioned or embedded(Lave & Wenger, 1990). Each study illustrates these ideas: All are informed by different theoretical frameworks, use different pathways to exploreproblems of interest and concern, and have something important to say to different constituencies or stakeholders. All, however, are the result ofperceived phenomena or human interpretations of a context.Situated inquiry is neither a quantitative nor qualitative approach to research, nor is it a "mixed-methods" approach. Rather, situated inquiry is afunction of the beliefs and behaviors of the individuals involved in it. It is also a function (and outcome)of the individuals who seek to join a community of practitioners who prac...

Dede Montgomery My Music Man

As Dede Montgomery moves through grief to accept of the death of her father, the stories in My Music Man shed light on change, acceptance, and forgiveness amid close personal relationships and Oregon’s natural landscapes. The reader is catapulted into autumn on the Willamette’s riverbank in the 1960s with the author and her brothers, where they discover their father’s own childhood stories and the intimate relationship he shares with the land. Tales about generations of family weave between time periods, held together by the constancy of place and colored by memories of picking berries and filberts, traveling through the West Linn locks, and swimming in the river on a hot summer day. Montgomery describes small-town life in a school where everyone knows everybody, and how it felt to be an only girl in what often felt like a never-ending sea of boys.

Cultural Psychology of Musical Experience

A volume in Advances in Cultural PsychologyThis book forms a basis and a starting point for a closer dialogue between musicologists, anthropologists and psychologists to achieve a better understanding of the cultural psychology of musical experience. This is done by arranging a meeting point or an arena in which different aspects of psychology and musicology touch and encounters each other due to how the two fields might be defined today. In line with this the book consists of a group of scholars that have their feet solidly grounded in psychology, social science or musicology, but at the same time have a certain interest in uniting them. On this basis it is divided into five parts, which investigates musical sensations, musical experiences, musical transformations, musical fundamentals and the notion of a cultural psychology of music. Thus another aim of this book is to prepare the basis for a further growth of a cultural psychology that is able to include the experiences of music as a basis for understanding the ordinary human life. Thus this book should be of interest for those who want to investigate the mysterious intersection between music and psychology.

Nothing is Real

Pop music's a simple pleasure. Is it catchy? Can you dance to it? Do you fancy the singer? What's fascinating about pop is our relationship with it. This relationship gets more complicated the longer it goes on. It's been going on now for 50 years.David Hepworth is interested in the human side of pop. He's interested in how people make the stuff and, more importantly, what it means to us. In this wide-ranging collection of essays, he shows how it is possible to take music seriously and, at the same time, not drain the life out of it. From the legacy of the Beatles to the dramatic decline of the record shop, from top tips for bands starting out to the bewildering nomenclature of musical genres, with characteristic insight and humour, he explores the highways and byways of this vast multiverse where Nothing Is Real and yet it is, emphatically and intrinsically so. Along the way he asks some essential questions about music and about life: is it all about the drummer; are band managers misunderstood; and is it appropriate to play `Angels' at funerals? As Pope John Paul II said `of all the unimportant things, football is the most important'. David Hepworth believes the same to be true of music and this selection of his best writing, covering the music of last fifty years, shows you precisely why.

Paul Anderson A Source of Innocent Merriment in an Object all Sublime. The Choral Works of Sir Arthur Sullivan

This book deals with the choral music of Sir Arthur Sullivan (1842-1900) and is a serious study of the works both historically and musically. It is the first book to discuss all of Sullivan's major choral works in detail in one volume, breaking new ground with a fresh approach to the musical analysis of the works and in the process, shedding new light on the mind of the composer. This makes the book an object of interest both to the serious student of music and to the general reader who has an interest in the choral music of the nineteenth century.

Volume - a word that refers to sound, collections, and the measurement of space - is a crucial characteristic of both graphic design and popular music. While expressing different aspects of these two pervasive cultural mediums, the term also introduces a discussion on their many links. Volume: Writings on Graphic Design, Music, Art, and Culture is a collection of both new and classic writings by frequent Emigre contributor and educator Kenneth FitzGerald that survey the discipline of graphic design in context with the parallel creative fields of contemporary musicand art. The topics of the writings are diverse: the roles of class in design, design education, Lester Bangs and Creem magazine, pornography, album cover art, independent record labels, anonymity and imaginary creative identities, and design as cultural chaos-maker.

Many of them, even artists, ask me, which are the relations between Contemporary Dance and Korean New Traditional Dance. There is always a question mark on the face of people, when I try to explain that the Korean Dance, for example Korean Ballet or Korean Modern Dance, are related to Contemporary Dance. It is difficult for them to understand the subject at first. For many people, regard to the content of the Contemporary Dance is either an abstract subject or only an American art of Dance. With this small contribution I want to show the importance of Korean Dance generally and its relations to worldwide Dance. This book should even show the similarities between Korean New Traditional Dance and Contemporary Dance today. It is supposed to give answers to all my friends and colleges, who ask themselves: what are the differences and similarities of these dances?[The author is no native speaker.]

Liu Wen Monster

The initial research for this work was conducted for my multimedia composition with a live performance of the work: Monster, in close collaboration with computer music engineer Marian Weger. The premiere of the work was on the 21st of January 2012 in Semperdepot Vienna. Monster is a mixed-media performance for Flute, electronics, one dancer and real-time video projection. The aim was to present an audio-visual dance performance based on a set of pre-recorded fragments, processed and arranged using powerful sequencer software. Distortions in the flute samples in the form of frequency shifts and the application of filters were among various elements exploited in order to enhance the immersive experience of the audience and the role of the music was to be one of subtle but direct influence of the listeners' sensations, by remaining more a background phenomenon than a forefront element of the work. This allowed for observers' perceptions to be shaped predominantly by the visual aspect of the performance. This piece exploits the natural tensions found on the borderline between natural and synthetic sounds and thus opens up a new vocabulary of sound possibilities.

Breanna Harvey Dance Education and Problems with Teacher Training Programs in North America

Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2014 in the subject Pedagogy - The Teacher, Educational Leadership, grade: 1, University of Hawai`i at Mānoa, course: Research in Dance, language: English, abstract: Currently, in education, there is a movement towards the necessity of a greater representation of highly qualified teachers in schools. Why is there a lack of representation of dance education in the certification of educators for K-12 students? I propose that many states will not allow these programs to exist for fear of lack of enrollment (which is a real problem), and for the fact that governments tend to focus on what is wrong with the inclusion of dance education in training programs, and ignore what is already working. It is much easier, for example, to say that there are not enough schools which offer dance to justify a dance teacher training program than to admit that teacher training programs in dance could, possibly, help raise the number of schools who have dance programs. There is a shift in the idea of educational reforms which exist within this context, and these shift are spearheaded by a few educators that truly care about the state of education today. My research explores what sort of reforms can happen when the United States, as a nation, push towards finding an exemplar example of what works in the teacher training programs (in dance, in particular), and examine the philosophical and curricular viewpoints that are working. To do this, I will be conduc...

Hyams Daniel Music Therapy as an Intermodal Practice

What does a music therapist do when a client chooses not to engage using music? What does a music therapist do when a client engages in the therapeutic relationship, but self-elects to use other arts? How does a music therapist respond when allocated a multi-purpose room in a school setting, where various arts and play materials are on offer, in addition to musical instruments, and what are the expectations of the child client when the child associates the allocated room with 'play'? What if an educational professional refers a child to music therapy, but the child may not necessarily consider music as part of their recreational activities? As a music therapist, I have asked myself these questions because these became the reality of my working practice. Doctoral research explored the experiences and responses of adolescent clients in school settings using intermodal arts in music therapy with a music therapist. Further research examined the considerations of music therapists working in educational settings. This book follows the theories, practices and research of a music therapist who experienced changes in his profession in the post-global recession evolution of the field.
