Project Report from the year 2017 in the subject Engineering - Computer Engineering, grade: 4.5, , language: English, abstract: In this project, we describe FAST TCP, a new TCP congestion control algorithm for high-speed long-latency networks, from design to implementation. We highlight the approach taken by FAST TCP to address the four difficulties, at both packet and flow levels, which the current TCP implementation has at large windows. We describe the architecture and characterize the equilibrium and stability properties of FAST TCP. We present experimental results comparing our first Linux prototype with TCP Reno, HSTCP, and STCP in terms of throughput, fairness, stability, and responsiveness. FAST TCP aims to rapidly stabilize high-speed long-latency networks into steady, efficient and fair operating points, in dynamic sharing environments, and the preliminary results are produced as output of our project. We also explain our project with the help of an existing real-time example as to explain why we go for the TCP download rather than FTP download. The real-time example that is chosen is Torrents which we use for Bulk and safe-downloading. We finally conclude with the results of our new congestion control algorithm aided with the graphs obtained during its simulation in NS2.

Recently Temperature measurement and control is a major requirement in most process industries that is, those industries that handle and convert gases, liquids, and bulk solids into products. Chemical, petroleum, petrochemical, polymer, plastic and larger segments of metallurgical and food processing industries, are examples. Chemical reactions, material separation, distillation, drying, evaporation, absorption, crystallization, Baking, extrusion, and thermal therapies are processes that normally occur at controlled temperatures. Typical temperature control loops employ the popular proportional plus integral plus derivative (PID) control algorithm. However, there are many control loops that use the ON-OFF control algorithm. It is well known that ON-OFF control is a simple, time optimal control strategy whose application is made easier by micro-controllers combined with modern solid-state switching devices such as Thyristors, Diacs, and Triacs

Routers in IP packet switched networks signal congestion to senders by discarding packets. Such discards, as a side-effect, are often the key factor determining the quality of network service perceived by users. For this reason network designers need techniques to explain, predict, and control the packet discard rate. This thesis explains the discards rate for TCP traffic in terms of the interaction between load and capacity. The key insights are that load should be measured as the number of senders actively completing for a bottleneck link, and capacity as the total network buffering available to those senders. The thesis shows how to predict discard rates using these measures. It also propose a new queuing method that can limit the discard rate over a wide range of loads.

A scheduling algorithm schedules a set of tasks in such way that the tasks are completed before their deadlines reached. There are varieties of algorithms for scheduling of periodic tasks on multiprocessor under partitioning scheme or global scheduling scheme. The most common scheduling algorithms are: Rate Monotonic (RM), Deadline Monotonic (DM), Earliest Deadline First (EDF) and Least Laxity First (LLF). In this book, we have proposed a new algorithm titled as D_EDF which is modified conventional EDF algorithm. The proposed algorithm along with EDF, LLF, RM, DM algorithms are simulated and tested for independent, preemptive, periodic tasks on tightly coupled real-time multiprocessor system under global scheduling. From experiments and result analysis it concludes that the proposed algorithm is very efficient in both underloaded and overloaded conditions. The algorithm proposed in this book; perform quite well during overloaded conditions. The algorithm is truly dynamic as it can work with available number of processors.

The objective of this book is to propose a new algorithm for obtaining a stable face detection and recognition techniques that have the capabilities of detecting the face with different poses and under different conditions. To obtain this stability, a hybrid of Feature-Based and Template Matching approaches are used in a new manner and under different stages, robust image segmentation, filtering steps and features detection using Feature-Based approach which can work in real-time with minimal training in contrast to other approaches such as image-based approach. This work has advantages over other approaches flow out from the ability of the proposed algorithm on detecting faces with different poses (Left, Right and Frontal) in varying illumination conditions and different races. This is done by merging some already defined algorithms such as Template Matching with new proposed algorithm to strength the detection process and obtaining robust algorithm with good results. Experimental results show that the proposed method is robust under a wide range of lighting conditions, different poses and different races. The proposed method gives a correct detection rate reach 94%.

Induction motors are the most important workhorses in industry. They are mostly used as constant-speed drives when fed from a voltage source of fixed frequency. Advent of advanced power electronic converters and powerful digital signal processors, however, has made possible the development of high performance, adjustable speed AC motor drives. This book aims to explore new areas of induction motor control based on artificial intelligence (AI) techniques in order to make the controller less sensitive to parameter changes. Selected AI techniques are applied for different induction motor control strategies. The book presents a practical computer simulation model of the induction motor that could be used for studying various induction motor drive operations. The control strategies explored include expert-system-based acceleration control, hybrid-fuzzy/PI two-stage control, neural-network-based direct self control, and genetic algorithm based extended Kalman filter for rotor speed estimation. There are also chapters on neural-network-based parameter estimation, genetic-algorithm-based optimized random PWM strategy, and experimental investigations. A chapter is provided as a primer for readers to get started with simulation studies on various AI techniques. Presents major artificial intelligence techniques to induction motor drives Uses a practical simulation approach to get interested readers started on drive development Authored by experienced scientists with over 20 years of experience in the field Provides numerous examples and the latest research results Simulation programs available from the book's Companion Website This book will be invaluable to graduate students and research engineers who specialize in electric motor drives, electric vehicles, and electric ship propulsion. Masterarbeit aus dem Jahr 2014 im Fachbereich VWL - Verkehrsökonomie, Note: 1,4, Technische Universität Dresden (Professur für Verkehrsökonometrie und -statistik), Veranstaltung: Transport Economics - Congestion Costs, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: The congestion costs in Germany are dramatically high due to increasing traffic volume and congestion lengths. These costs are mainly induced to market failure, especially externalities: Car drivers don't take the mutual impediment in consideration. In conclusion, every car driver causes the congestion while also suffering from it simultaneously. This phenomenon makes it difficult to find the right solutions in order to internalize the external costs. However, by following the Pigovian Tax strategy (congestion pricing) and by using additional advanced technologies the congestion costs can be reduced or even avoided effectively.

Diplomarbeit aus dem Jahr 2006 im Fachbereich VWL - Verkehrsökonomie, Note: 2,0, Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg (Südasieninstitut), 42 Quellen im Literaturverzeichnis, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Congestion is an increasing problem in cities worldwide and is, for example, responsible for the slowing down of London's traffic since 1977. Considering the increase in the number of cars in many European countries within the past ten years, it is not surprising that many cities experience the same problem as London. This work deals with the problem of congestion resulting from bottlenecks in urban traffic. Moreover, measures are analyzed that can be used to solve the congestion problem. Besides the costs of congestion, additional private and external costs of a trip are discussed. This analysis comprises a variety of means of transportation and compares the composition of their cost components. A main component of the private costs as well as of the external costs are the congestion costs of car traffic. This emphasizes the car traffic's responsibility for traffic jams.Using the bottleneck-modell, traffic jams are explained through the rational decisions of individuals and it is shown how road pricing leads to a social optimum without traffic jam.Furthermore measures are examined to improve the traffic situation in cities and evaluated regarding their ability to internalize the external effects of a trip. Looking at the traffic policy in three cities worldwide having ...

Since delay-sensitive and bandwidth-intense multimedia applications have emerged in the Internet, the demand for network resources has seen a steady increase during the last decade. Specifically, wireless networks have become pervasive and highly populated. These motivations are behind the problems considered in this book. The topic of this book is about the application of game theory, queueing theory and learning techniques in wireless networks under some QoS constraints, especially in partially observable en- vironments. We consider different layers of the protocol stack. In fact, we study the Opportunistic Spectrum Access (OSA) at the Medium Access Control (MAC) layer through Cognitive Radio (CR) approaches. Thereafter, we focus on the congestion con- trol at the transport layer, and we develop some congestion control mechanisms under the TCP protocol.

Cloud computing is a new prototype for enterprises which can effectively assist the execution of tasks. Task scheduling is a major constraint which greatly influences the performance of cloud computing environments. The cloud service providers and consumers have different objectives and requirements. For the moment, the load and availability of the resources vary dynamically with time. Therefore, in the cloud environment scheduling resources is a complicated problem. Moreover, task scheduling algorithm is a method by which tasks are allocated or matched to data center resources. All task scheduling problems in a cloud computing environment come under the class of combinatorial optimization problems which decide searching for an optimal solution in a finite set of potential solutions. For a combinatorial optimization problem in bounded time, exact algorithms always guarantee to find an optimal solution for every finite size instance. These kinds of problems are NP-Hard in nature. Moreover, for the large scale applications, an exact algorithm needs unexpected computation time which leads to an increase in computational burden. However, the absolutely perfect scheduling algorithm does not exist, because of conflicting scheduling objectives. Therefore, to overcome this constraint heuristic algorithms are proposed. In workflow scheduling problems, search space grows exponentially with the problem size. Heuristics optimization as a search method is useful in local search to find go...

This book presents an algorithm for the detection of an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) signal in a cognitive radio context by means of a joint and iterative channel and noise estimation technique. Based on the minimum mean square criterion, it performs an accurate detection of a user in a frequency band, by achieving a quasi-optimal channel and noise variance estimation if the signal is present, and by estimating the noise level in the band if the signal is absent. Organized into three chapters, the first chapter provides the background against which the system model is presented, as well as some basics concerning the channel statistics and the transmission of an OFDM signal over a multipath channel. In Chapter 2, the proposed iterative algorithm for the noise variance and the channel estimation is detailed, and in Chapter 3, an application of the algorithm for the free-band detection is proposed. In both Chapters 2 and 3, the principle of the algorithm is presented in a simple way, and more elaborate developments are also provided. The different assumptions and assertions in the developments and the performance of the proposed method are validated through simulations, and compared to methods of the scientific literature

In the second part of this book, a novel HUP-tree algorithm is proposed to efficiently mine the high utility itemsets based on the downward closure property. A HUP tree is first designed to keep the related information for later mining process. A HUP-growth mining algorithm is then presented to efficiently mine high utility itemsets from it. In the third part of this book, we attempt to extend the FP-tree algorithm for handling quantitative data from the global values of fuzzy regions. Thus, the fuzzy FP-tree algorithm, the compressed fuzzy frequent pattern tree (CFFP-tree) algorithm, and the upper-bound fuzzy frequent pattern tree (UBFFP-tree) algorithm are then proposed to efficiently mine the fuzzy frequent itemsets.

Recently, sparse signal approximation has become an increasingly important research area in signal processing. It attracts a lot of interest due to its wide range of practical applications. In this work, a novel adaptive filtering algorithm with relative low computational complexity that is capable of exploiting the sparsity of systems is proposed. The basic idea here is, we adopt a p-norm constraint in the cost function of the variable step-size least mean square (VSSLMS) algorithm. This constrain imposes a zero attraction at each filter coefficient based on their respective relative value. Also, the convergence analysis of the proposed algorithm is presented and the stability condition is derived. The performance of the proposed algorithm has been compared to those of the Zero Attraction Least Mean Square(ZA-LMS), windowing ZA-LMS(wZA-LMS), Non-uniform Norm Constraint LMS(NNCLMS) in a system identification setting for different additive Gaussian noise(AGN), additive correlated noise(ACN)and additive impulsive noise(AIN) environments. The proposed algorithm has always shown superior performance to the others with less or comparable number of computations.

Inhaltsangabe:Abstract: In this thesis it was shown that it is possible to set-up a very fast and flexible realtime controller using only off-the-shelf components on a PC platform. To best fit the requirements, the used hardware and software has been chosen carefully and compared with other market products. After evaluating the timing and handling structure, the real-time controller and the system drivers were implemented using the 'C' program language. To ensure flexibility, this program has been tested on two different hardware configurations. Timing analyses and measurements are compare for the two configurations. All code is written to be easy to understand and quickly learned by students. To prove the system capabilities, a PI control algorithm has been implemented to control the torque of a DC machine. The system ran on a 333 MHz PII with algorithm times of about 600ns and an overall sampling rate of 20kHz. This very flexible system, together with the real time operating system of RTLinux and Linux, makes it possible to build a control platform for power electronics which can be easily adapted to fit almost every requirement in a very short time. The superior computation power of standard PCs (and the possibility to upgrade the CPU) is a decisive advantage to common DSP solutions - especially when system cost is an important factor. The use of open source operating systems enables full control and survey of the whole system. Software and utilities for almost all...

True Digital Control: Statistical Modelling and Non–Minimal State Space Designdevelops a true digital control design philosophy that encompasses data–based model identification, through to control algorithm design, robustness evaluation and implementation. With a heritage from both classical and modern control system synthesis, this book is supported by detailed practical examples based on the authors’ research into environmental, mechatronic and robotic systems. Treatment of both statistical modelling and control design under one cover is unusual and highlights the important connections between these disciplines. Starting from the ubiquitous proportional–integral controller, and with essential concepts such as pole assignment introduced using straightforward algebra and block diagrams, this book addresses the needs of those students, researchers and engineers, who would like to advance their knowledge of control theory and practice into the state space domain; and academics who are interested to learn more about non–minimal state variable feedback control systems. Such non–minimal state feedback is utilised as a unifying framework for generalised digital control system design. This approach provides a gentle learning curve, from which potentially difficult topics, such as optimal, stochastic and multivariable control, can be introduced and assimilated in an interesting and straightforward manner. Key features: Covers both system identification and control system design in a unified manner Includes practical design case studies and simulation examples Considers recent research into time–variable and state–dependent parameter modelling and control, essential elements of adaptive and nonlinear control system design, and the delta–operator (the discrete–time equivalent of the differential operator) systems Accompanied by a website hosting MATLAB examples True Digital Control: Statistical Modelling and Non–Minimal State Space Design is a comprehensive and practical guide for students and professionals who wish to further their knowledge in the areas of modern control and system identification.

Vector control is a method for dynamic control of the speed torque and power factor of the induction motor through permanent control of the intensity and the angle of the space vectors of the electromagnetic variables. The basic idea of the Field Oriented Control (FOC) algorithm is decoupling the stator current into flux and torque producing components. Both components can be controlled separately after decoupling. The structure of the motor controller is then as simple as that for a separately excited DC motor. Direct vector FOC control system is based on measurement, acquisition and (or) estimation of the space angle of the rotor's flux. Unlike the control system which is oriented to the space vector of the rotor's flux, on the dynamic model in a d-q coordinate system of IM and PWM of the voltage inverter, thereby using linear control technique and linear controllers, the direct torque control systems (DTC) are based on the space angle of the stator flux, on the dynamic model of the induction motor in a stationary frame of reference and on the space-vector modulation of the inverter. DTC method is based on non-linear control techniques and non-linear controllers.

Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2009 in the subject Electrotechnology, grade: 1.0, University of Duisburg-Essen (Institute of Electrical Power Systems), course: Electrical Engineering, language: English, abstract: The primary objective of this dissertation is to develop a black box optimization tool. The algorithm should be able to solve complex nonlinear, multimodal, discontinuous and mixed-integer power system optimization problems without any model reduction. Although there are many computational intelligence (CI) basedalgorithms which can handle these problems, they require intense human intervention in the form of parameter tuning, selection of a suitable algorithm for a given problem etc. The idea here is to develop an algorithm that works relatively well on a variety of problems with minimum human effort. The most significant optimization task in the power system operation is the scheduling of various generation resources (Unit Commitment, UC). The current practice used in UC modelling is the binary approach. This modelling results in a high dimension problem. This in turn leads to increased computational effort anddecreased efficiency of the algorithm. A duty cycle based modelling proposed in this thesis results in 80 percent reduction in the problem dimension. The stern uptime and downtime requirements are also included in the modelling. Therefore, the search process mostly starts in a feasible solution space. From the investigations on a benchmark problem...

Grover's quantum search algorithm is an important landmark discovery in the area of quantum computing that drives a quantum computer from a known initial state(source state) to an unknown final state(target state) by using selective phase inversions of these states. The algorithm is simply a successive iteration of the Grover's search operator, which is a product of selective inversion operators of source and target states. In its original form, Grover's operator performs the selective inversions only on a unique source state and a unique target state. In the generalized version, we make our search operator to perform selective inversions on more than one source and target states. First, we find that the case of selective inversions of two source and two target states can be easily analysed somewhat similar to the case of Grover's algorithm. But unlike Grover's operator, the selective inversions of three source and three target states is not so easy to study analytically and hence we perform numerical calculations on some specific cases. We find that these generalized search operators also give us a successful quantum search as expected.

Cryptographic systems are divided into two kinds. One is symmetric and other is asymmetric. In symmetric we require only a single key to encrypt and decrypt the data while asymmetric or public key cryptography requires two separate keys-one to lock and other one to unlock the text. In this project a public key crypto-scheme has been studied and implemented. The project is aimed to implement the methods for solving Elliptic curve Discrete Logarithm Problem (ECDLP) on which the elliptic curve schemes are based. For this, Pollard's Rho method has been chosen for implemen- tation. This way, cryptanalysis of a public key elliptic curve algorithm can be performed. The project also explains what Elliptic Curve Discrete Log- arithm Problem is and implements the Diffie Hellman algorithm based on ECDLP. Thus, this project implements cryptographic algorithm as well as cryptanalytic method.

This book includes a synthesis of some of our previsions research works. It presents firstly a study of interactions between two routing protocols (AODV, DSR) and two transport protocol versions (TCP New Reno, Vegas). After this study, we conduct some simulations to analyze the behavior of these protocols with different node mobility and network load values. The performance results of each protocol are examined to identify our own scenarios in order to evaluate our proposed solution for better interactions between these protocols. This solution is called CL-TCP (Cross Layer TCP). It is an adaptation of the TCP congestion control mechanism with some parameters provided by the routing layer (mobility nodes and the size of routing length). After the evaluation of CL-TCP, the results showed that it significantly improves the interactions between TCP Vegas and AODV protocols.

The classic approach in Automatic Control relies on the use of simplified models of the systems and reformulations of the specifications. In this framework, the control law can be computed using deterministic algorithms. However, this approach fails when the system is too complex for its model to be sufficiently simplified, when the designer has many constraints to take into account, or when the goal is not only to design a control but also to optimize it. This book presents a new trend in Automatic Control with the use of metaheuristic algorithms. These kinds of algorithm can optimize any criterion and constraint, and therefore do not need such simplifications and reformulations. The first chapter outlines the author’s main motivations for the approach which he proposes, and presents the advantages which it offers. In Chapter 2, he deals with the problem of system identification. The third and fourth chapters are the core of the book where the design and optimization of control law, using the metaheuristic method (particle swarm optimization), is given. The proposed approach is presented along with real-life experiments, proving the efficiency of the methodology. Finally, in Chapter 5, the author proposes solving the problem of predictive control of hybrid systems. Contents 1. Introduction and Motivations. 2. Symbolic Regression. 3. PID Design Using Particle Swarm Optimization. 4. Tuning and Optimization of H-infinity Control Laws. 5. Predictive Control of Hybrid Systems. About the Authors Guillaume Sandou is Professor in the Automatic Department of Supélec, in Gif Sur Yvette, France. He has had 12 books, 8 journal papers and 1 patent published, and has written papers for 32 international conferences. His main research interests include modeling, optimization and control of industrial systems; optimization and metaheuristics for Automatic Control; and constrained control.

Fachbuch aus dem Jahr 2016 im Fachbereich Informatik - Angewandte Informatik, , Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: In this book, we propose several modules of diagnosis for complex and dynamic systems. These modules are based on the three algorithms colony of ants, which are AntTreeStoch, Lumer & Faieta and Binary ant colony. These algorithms have been chosen for their simplicity and their vast field of application. However, these algorithms cannot be used under their basal form for the development of diagnostic modules since they have several limitations. We have also proposed several adaptations in order that these algorithms can be used in diagnostic modules. We have proposed a parallel version of the algorithm AntTreeStoch based on a reactive multi-agents system. This version allows minimizing the influence of initial sort on the outcome of classification. We have also introduced a new parameter called Sid, which allows several ants to connect to the same position, and we have modified the movements of ants by promoting the path of the ant the most similar. For the algorithm Lumer & Faieta, we have accelerated the speed of construction of classes by adding a speed setting different for each Ant. To reduce the number of movements, we have proposed a new variable that allows saving the identifiers of objects displaced by the same Ant. To improve the quality of classification, we have also added to the algorithm of the indices to report the classes trunks constructed. For the...

Describes the general principles and current research into Model Predictive Control (MPC); the most up-to-date control method for power converters and drives The book starts with an introduction to the subject before the first chapter on classical control methods for power converters and drives. This covers classical converter control methods and classical electrical drives control methods. The next chapter on Model predictive control first looks at predictive control methods for power converters and drives and presents the basic principles of MPC. It then looks at MPC for power electronics and drives. The third chapter is on predictive control applied to power converters. It discusses: control of a three-phase inverter; control of a neutral point clamped inverter; control of an active front end rectifier, and; control of a matrix converter. In the middle of the book there is Chapter four – Predictive control applied to motor drives. This section analyses predictive torque control of industrial machines and predictive control of permanent magnet synchronous motors. Design and implementation issues of model predictive control is the subject of the final chapter. The following topics are described in detail: cost function selection; weighting factors design; delay compensation; effect of model errors, and prediction of future references. While there are hundreds of books teaching control of electrical energy using pulse width modulation, this will be the very first book published in this new topic. Unique in presenting a completely new theoretic solution to control electric power in a simple way Discusses the application of predictive control in motor drives, with several examples and case studies Matlab is included on a complementary website so the reader can run their own simulations

We have attempted to reduce the number of checked condition through saving frequency of the tandem replicated words, and also using non-overlapping iterative neighbor intervals on plane sweep algorithm. The essential idea of non-overlapping iterative neighbor search in a document lies in focusing the search not on the full space of solutions but on a smaller subspace considering non-overlapping intervals defined by the solutions. Subspace is defined by the range near the specified minimum keyword. We repeatedly pick a range up and flip the unsatisfied keywords, so the relevant ranges are detected. The proposed method tries to improve the plane sweep algorithm by efficiently calculating the minimal group of words and enumerating intervals in a document which contain the minimum frequency keyword. It decreases the number of comparison and creates the best state of optimized search algorithm especially in a high volume of data. Efficiency and reliability are also increased compared to the previous modes of the technical approach.

In the era of Exascale computing, the interconnection network is a key component in the High-Performance Computing (HPC) Systems which are expected to interconnect million of processing nodes by the year 2018. It is a prominent challenge for current network technologies such as InfiniBand to achieve high network performance in order not to be the bottleneck of HPC systems. In that sense, Congestion menaces the network performance and, consequently, the overall HPC system operation. This book covers important gaps in congestion management for HPC interconnection networks using distributed routing. It analyzes the drawbacks of proposed solutions, where none of the existing techniques for this type of networks achieves a complete efficiency and scalability. In that sense, the new proposals adapt the RECN basic principles to distributed-routing networks, by means of efficient and scalable techniques which can be divided in two groups: simple techniques which achieve the optimal network performance with the available resources, and completely-efficient techniques which achieve almost the maximum network performance at an affordable cost in terms of network resources.

This book combines the research activities of the authors, both of whom are researchers at Ecole Nationale de l’Aviation Civile (French National School of Civil Aviation), and presents their findings from the last 15 years. Their work uses air transport as its focal point, within the realm of mathematical optimization, looking at real life problems and theoretical models in tandem, and the challenges that accompany studying both approaches. The authors’ research is linked with the attempt to reduce air space congestion in Western Europe, USA and, increasingly, Asia. They do this through studying stochastic optimization (particularly artificial evolution), the sectorization of airspace, route distribution and takeoff slots, and by modeling airspace congestion. Finally, the authors discuss their short, medium and long term research goals. They hope that their work, although related to air transport, will be applied to other fields, such is the transferable nature of mathematical optimization. At the same time, they intend to use other areas of research, such as approximation and statistics to complement their continued inquiry in their own field. Contents 1. Introduction. Part 1. Optimization and Artificial Evolution 2. Optimization: State of the Art. 3. Genetic Algorithms and Improvements. 4. A new concept for Genetic Algorithms based on Order Statistics. Part 2. With version 7 of Java, Oracle replaced its tried and tested sorting algorithm in the Java runtime library by an entirely new Quicksort variant proposed by Vladimir Yaroslavskiy. The decision to change the sorting method was based on empirical studies showing that the new algorithm is faster than the formerly used classic Quicksort. Surprisingly, this improvement is achieved with a dual-pivot approach-an idea considered not promising by theoretical studies in the past. In this book, we try to shed some light on the unexpected success by mathematically analyzing the new algorithm's performance. We focus on precise and fine-grained average-case analysis, aiming at the flavor of Donald Knuth's famous book series "The Art of Computer Programming". In particular, we go beyond abstract measures like key comparisons and we prefer precise expected values to asymptotic approximations. This rigor ensures that the discussed sorting methods are usable in practice and that the analytic results contribute to a sound comparison of the Quicksort variants. This book is based on the author's master thesis on the same topic.

Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2012 in the subject Sociology - Work, Profession, Education, Organisation, grade: None, International School of New Media at the University of Lübeck, language: English, abstract: The advent of online social networking has created opportunities for brands to attract large numbers of followers, while individuals can 'add' thousands of other members as personal friends. However, how users and brands share with, manage, and control communication to and from these large 'personal' networks has become a challenge. The challenge is exacerbated further by having separate massaging interfaces for communication channels like chat, inbox messaging, status update, etc, as it currently obtains in leading social networking services. In this paper, we present Mobbo1, a service that ranks and organizes people who share similar interests (eg fans of a brand, or a user's network of friends) into concise and manageable communities called mobbos, to enable targeted messaging and intuitive control of communication to and from other network members. Every activity in the network is thus associated with a community of interest, such that all messaging in the network takes place within these mobbos, and is targeted to only members of the mobbo. The mobbo approach unifies messaging interfaces into one, to improve interaction experience and centralize control and access. An algorithm to compute and rank a brand's or user's 'pe...

Master's Thesis from the year 2016 in the subject Engineering - Mechanical Engineering, grade: 5, Tallinn University (Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering - Chair of Production Engineering), course: Industrial Engineering and Management, language: English, abstract: Flow shop scheduling encompasses allocating a number of jobs in a previously ordered set of machines so that a determined objective function such as makespan is either minimized or maximized. Despite the apparent simplicity of the problem, there is no known non enumerative polynomial time algorithm capable of solving this type of optimization, except for in those cases that can be treated by the Johnson's algorithm or proportional flow shops.Indeed, understanding flow shop scheduling is proven to be mathematically intractable in the vast majority of cases. Considering this nature of flow shop scheduling, the primary objective of this dissertation was to develop algorithms capable of mitigating the computational burden associated with the problem. In this realm, three solutions were proposed. The first approach refers to a genetic algorithm that employed discrete event simulation and customized genetic operators as a means to eliminate the evaluation of unfeasible solutions and incorporate problem-specific knowledge. The second and third proposed solutions consisting of hybrid methods that have improved the aforementioned framework by including local search. Computational experiments that used...

With resources at a premium, and ecological concerns paramount, the need for clean, efficient and low-cost processes is one of the most critical challenges facing chemical engineers. The ability to control these processes, optimizing one, two or several variables has the potential to make more substantial savings in time, money and resources than any other single factor. Building on the success of the previous editions, this new third edition of A Real-Time Approach to Process Control employs both real industry practice and process control education without the use of complex or highly mathematical techniques, providing a more practical and applied approach. Updated throughout, this edition: • Includes a brand new chapter on Model predictive Control (MPC) • Now includes wireless and web-based technologies • Covers bio-related systems • Details the new multivariable control measure developed by the authors • Includes PowerPoint slides and solutions to Workshop problems on the accompanying website: http://www.wiley.com/go/svrcek-real-time-3e From the reviews of previous editions: “Would appeal to practising engineers due to its “hands on” feel for the subject matter. But more importantly, the authors present these concepts as fundamentals of chemical engineering, in a way that is consistent with how professor teach at the universities.” –Chemical Engineering Process (CEP) “The book has been beautifully crafted” –Engineering Subject Centre “Provides a refreshing approach to the presentation of process analysis and control” –The Chemical Engineer

The traveling salesman problem (TSP) is one of the most widely studied NP hard combinatorial optimization problems and has already solved in the semi-optimal manners using numbers of different methods. Among them, Genetic Algorithms (GA) is pre-dominating. In this paper I solve the problem with a new operator, Inver-over, for an evolutionary algorithm for the TSP. This operator outperforms all other 'genetic' operators, whether unary or binary, which was first introduced by Guo Tao and Zbigniew Michalewicz. I also propose a new algorithm for solving TSP and also introduced it modified version. To get a comparative idea of the performance of these algorithms I solve same problems with the two algorithms. The performance analysis shows that my proposed algorithm produces relatively better solutions in the case of the tour length every time. But when we increase the cities it takes more time to solve than the Inver-Over operator for TSP.

By the time students reach the end of a course on algorithm design, they are starting to ask questions about what computers can and cannot do: Is there a polynomial-time algorithm for every computational problem? Can every problem be solved using dynamic programming? Can every problem be formulated as a graph problem? What is a Computer and What Can It Do? takes advantage of the students' curiosity by answering their questions in the context in which they naturally arose: algorithms. What is a Computer and What Can It Do? is intended to serve as the primary textbook in an undergraduate course for computer science majors at the junior or senior level. Students should have previously taken a sophomore-level course in algorithms that includes a discussion of graph algorithms. This book may also be useful for people in fields other than computer science who have some background in algorithm design and who would like to develop an understanding of the main ideas of theoretical computer science without getting bogged down in minutiae. What is a Computer and What Can It Do? is short so that students can stay focused on understanding the problems that computers can and cannot solve rather than becoming overwhelmed by the details of automata theory and formal languages. This book is not a reference for professors. It is written for students to read ... and enjoy.

A fundamental challenge that management faces in the twenty-first century is how to exercise adequate control, i. e. how to guide and direct the behaviour of their subordinates. With increasing globalisation firms witness a cross-cultural impact too. Of particular interest is the question of whether to use the standardized form of control similar to the home base of firms or whether to adapt their control practices to the local specificities. Given the meagre state of the literature in management control with a cross-cultural emphasis, this study addresses a real world problem, namely the question whether management control practices are configured similarly or differently across cultures.Relying on a generalized industry sample across four countries (Belgium, Canada, Germany and Poland), this study sought to shed light on one of the more intriguing questions - "does culture matter" - for specific control areas, in particular for performance measurement, performance evaluation and reward systems. The theoretical foundations are grounded in the cultural framework of the GLOBE project accompanied by thoughts of new institutionalism, stakeholder theory and contingency thoughts. Hypotheses are tested by mean comparisons (ANOVA, ANCOVA). The empirical findings highlight cultural differences for a broader set of control practices and deliver new insights into the intersection of culture and management control. This dissertation crafts a novel topic with high relevance for bo...
