Louis Richard Baumgaertner Tales of a New York Yankee. Life in New York City and the Border States in the 20th Century

Lou Baumgaertner was born and bred in New York City, and although he also lived amongst the Border States, and even in the South, he was a New York Yankee to his dying day. Part of that, of course, could be attributed to his being a die-hard fan of the best baseball team in the world, the New York Yankees. But being a New York Yankee also meant so much more … New Yorkers tend to be different from those who live in other regions, and frequently are easily recognized by others as either being “different”, or more precisely as being “from New York”. Sometimes that recognition is not accompanied by a warm feeling of acceptance. But we New Yorkers know we are different. We have our own accent – although those who live in New York City might argue it’s all the others who have accents … we speak perfectly normally. Because we live in a Big City, we talk fast, we seem brusque, and we sometimes appear to lack patience with others. We don’t mean to be rude, but the demands of surviving in a Big City (almost any Big City) require a no-nonsense attitude to life to avoid being run over by those around us. But once you get to know us, we’re pretty nice people. We New Yorkers are proud of ourselves, and of our city, and we have a right to be. It may not be the Capital of the Country, but many New Yorkers often think of it as such … to a true New Yorker, there is only one New York City! And New York City is the Business and Cultural Capital of the Country! This ubiquitous sentiment is why Ne...

Brian L. Tochterman The Dying City. Postwar New York and the Ideology of Fear

3839 руб.
In this eye-opening cultural history, Brian Tochterman examines competing narratives that shaped post–World War II New York City. As a sense of crisis rose in American cities during the 1960s and 1970s, a period defined by suburban growth and deindustrialization, no city was viewed as in its death throes more than New York. Feeding this narrative of the dying city was a wide range of representations in film, literature, and the popular press--representations that ironically would not have been produced if not for a city full of productive possibilities as well as challenges. Tochterman reveals how elite culture producers, planners and theorists, and elected officials drew on and perpetuated the fear of death to press for a new urban vision. It was this narrative of New York as the dying city, Tochterman argues, that contributed to a burgeoning and broad anti-urban political culture hostile to state intervention on behalf of cities and citizens. Ultimately, the author shows that New York's decline--and the decline of American cities in general--was in part a self-fulfilling prophecy bolstered by urban fear and the new political culture nourished by it.

'New York City as Metaphor in Selected American Texts' tries to capture the picture and meaning of an ever-changing city which has casted and still casts a spell over people all around the world. An uncountable number of authors have dedicated their works to New York City because of their fascination of its diversity and constant change that promises its dwellers a life in wealth and freedom.Surprisingly, all novels that have been analyzed reveal New York as the complete opposite of the American Dream that everyone expects when arriving on Ellis Island. The protagonists have to realize that their dreams will never become fulfilled and, consequently, become disillusioned and corrupted by their unhealthy environment.John Dos Passos describes a City that becomes a modern Babylon; it is fragmented and on its way to greed, capitalism and corruption. The New York of Stephen Crane's Maggie Johnson and Edith Wharton's Lily Bart is like a gigantic deterministic cage that denies every attempt of escape. Moreover, the metaphysical novel 'City of Glass' by Paul Auster does not show any sign of the promised life in wealth and freedom, but rather a city that is split into pieces, ruled by chance and misunderstandings. The city literally dehumanizes its inhabitants as they are dazzled by its addictive quality.

Elliott Erwitt's glimpses of New York City are sometimes gritty, sometimes elegant, yet always true to life. His monochromatic tribute to the Big Apple contains all the shadings of this vital metropolis. Capturing the true diversity that makes this city great, this selection of images spans Erwitt's career, including many previously unseen works from the '50s and '60s. It is a memorable tribute to a great city and a reflection of a great photographer's genius. Born in Paris in 1928, Elliott Erwitt arrived in the U.S. in the late 1930s. Establishing himself in the '40s and '50s as a leading magazine photographer, he joined the prestigious Magnum agency in 1953. In addition to his work in magazines, he achieved great success as an advertising photographer and filmmaker. He currently lives in New York City.

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2014 in the subject American Studies - Culture and Applied Geography, grade: 1.0, Ruhr-University of Bochum, language: English, abstract: This paper attempts to provide a scholarly analysis of the discussion triggered by Frank Miller's comment that "Metropolis is New York in the daytime; Gotham City is New York at night." The paper aims to analyze the representation of Gotham City in Nolan's "The Dark Knight" trilogy and the representation of Metropolis as fictional version of New York City in selected episodes of the television series "Smallville." Starting from a disambiguation of the respective city's name, it continues with an analysis of the resulting relation of factual and imagined place. In the following, the author discusses the possibility of understanding the cities, both Gotham City and Metropolis, as characters within the framework of the respective superhero narrative. To do so, three different theories of space and spatial practices are being introduced: Michel Foucault's "Of Other Spaces: Utopias and Heterotopias" (1984), Henri Lefebvre's The Production of Space (1991), and Michel de Certeau's The Practices of Everyday Life (1984). These theories and their respective approaches to space, as contradictory as they might seem, open up various ways to discuss the city as character.

In just a few short years, Horst Hamann has risen to the forefront of artists whose unique vision of New York is as monumental and impressive as the city itself. Critics everywhere applauded his wildly successful, New York Vertical, hailing it as "a standout," (New York Post) and "the perfect book for anyone who has ever stood spellbound on a Midtown street corner" (Forbes). Now Hamann once again pays homage to his adopted city in this collection of new photographs that capture not only New York`s towering magnificence, but also its breadth and promise. In beautifully composed panoramas, portraits and streetscapes that are at once astonishing and intimate, Hamann shows us New York through the eyes of a lover, visitor, friend and adversary. We see the city`s stark angles and gentle shadows; its majestic forests of pillars and skyscrapers; its graceful curves, arches, and lines; the welcoming embrace of its interior spaces and its alienating walls of steel and concrete.

Classic Books Library presents this brand new edition of "How the Other Half Lives" (1890) by Jacob Riis. This powerful collection of photographs depicts the slums of New York during the 1800s. As an émigré, Riis witnessed the poverty and crowded conditions of the city, and turned to photojournalism to document street life. Mastering the innovative use of flash, and being one of the first to use the technology in photographic practice in America, Riis produced starkly honest and evocative images of the tenements. Riis (1849-1914) was a journalist and social documentary photographer born in Denmark. He emigrated to New York as a young man and became part of a large wave of immigrants that settled there in the late 1800s. After initially training as a carpenter, his journalistic career began when he was appointed as a trainee at the New York News Association. Later, Riis developed an interest in photography as a way to further illustrate the conditions of city slums that featured in his reports, and his first collaborative photojournalism work was published in 1888.

Diploma Thesis from the year 2009 in the subject Tourism, grade: 1,5, Euro-Business-College Bonn, language: English, abstract: 1 New York - more than a city that never sleeps1.1 Problem situationIn spite of the financial crisis, the United States of America is one of the most popular countries to visit for Germans, in the past and present. Several reasons account for this positive effect. First of all, the consistently weak U.S. Dollar compared to the strong Euro is a tourist magnet. The new political image in the person of President Obama should not be underestimated, either. Another reason is the dropping of airline prices to popular destinations within the United States (Fischer, 2009). Clearly in the lead is the destination New York City (NYC), as number one visited destination in the country. This is especially true with the explosion of the phenomenon known as 'shopping tourism', which is captured in the growing amount of visitors' spending. After having surpassed Orlando and Las Vegas in 2007, in terms of visitors' spending, New York City set a new record in 2008 by recording $30 billion dollars spent only by visitors (Heywood & Spell, 2008a). The importance of this industry is emphasized by Michael R. Bloomberg, Mayor of New York City: "Despite the economic challenges all cities are facing, tourism remains a bright spot for New York City, with 47 million visitors spending $30 billion here in 2008, the highest totals we've ever achieved. " . . . provides a rare and well-documented view inside the world of under-housed men in New York City . . . [It] is an interesting and convincing book." · H-UrbanFor a decade, from 1983 to 1993, homelessness was a major concern in the United States. In 19994, this public concern suddenly disappeared, without any significant reduction in the number of people without proper housing. By examining the making and unmaking of a homeless crisis, this book explores how public understandings of what constitutes a social crisis are shaped.Drawing on five years of ethnographic research in New York City with African Americans and Latinos living in poverty, Where Have All the Homeless Gone? reveals that the homeless "crisis" was driven as much by political misrepresentations of poverty, race, and social difference, as the housing, unemployment, and healthcare problems that caused homelessness and continue to plague American cities.Anthony Marcus is an urban anthropologist from New York City, currently a senior lecturer in International Development at the University of Melbourne in Australia. He has done research in New York, Havana, Mexico City, and Nairobi and published extensively in anthropology and American history.

Sonia Song-Ha Lee Building a Latino Civil Rights Movement. Puerto Ricans, African Americans, and the Pursuit of Racial Justice in New York City

3502 руб.
In the first book-length history of Puerto Rican civil rights in New York City, Sonia Lee traces the rise and fall of an uneasy coalition between Puerto Rican and African American activists from the 1950s through the 1970s. Previous work has tended to see blacks and Latinos as either naturally unified as "people of color" or irreconcilably at odds as two competing minorities. Lee demonstrates instead that Puerto Ricans and African Americans in New York City shaped the complex and shifting meanings of "Puerto Rican-ness" and "blackness" through political activism. African American and Puerto Rican New Yorkers came to see themselves as minorities joined in the civil rights struggle, the War on Poverty, and the Black Power movement--until white backlash and internal class divisions helped break the coalition, remaking "Hispanicity" as an ethnic identity that was mutually exclusive from "blackness." Drawing on extensive archival research and oral history interviews, Lee vividly portrays this crucial chapter in postwar New York, revealing the permeability of boundaries between African American and Puerto Rican communities.

Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2010 in the subject American Studies - Comparative Literature, Free University of Berlin, course: Independent Study, language: English, abstract: A kaleidoscope of New York City in terms of gender is created through an elaborate scholarly investigation as contemporary popular forms are considered across various media. By analysis of spatial categories, it explores the post 9/11 imagination of the metropolis in light of an inherent logic of consumer culture with a focus on women's views. Shaping an awareness of female voices as arguably characteristic of the postmodern cityscape, the essay aims to serve as an impulse in support of new ideas in feminist urban art politics.

John Goodby's sequence of sixty-seven sonnets read as a tribute to Ted Berrigan (1934-1983), the author of the masterly The Sonnets(1964), updated and transplanted from New York City to South Wales. Irreverent and at times shamelessly erotic, Goodby adopts Berrigan's unique collage style in these poems, repeating and refiguring lines of the ongoing work so that unexpected shifts in meaning occur in each new context, generating a kind of Fast Show meets Jules Laforgue effect. In these poems 'the existence of long-lasting emotions is something of a puzzle' as we enjoy mysterious encounters with film nut Nigel and Harry H Corbett in Carmarthen's Latin Quarter and are exhorted repeatedly to accept that 'love is a babe'. If I ever write a poem this raw I'll be amazed.

Interborough Rapid Transit Company The New York Subway

This is a complete facsimile of the original edition published by the Interborough Rapid Transit Company to commemorate the opening of New York's first subway line. From the perspective of both urban history and the history of transportation, this book is an important primary source. Building the city's first subway in the early years of the twentieth century required delicate collaboration between public and private interests and called for the expenditure of considerable sums of both public and private money. The book introduces us to Abram S. Hewitt, a late nineteenth-century mayor of New York City. It was Hewitt who realized that, while private capital alone had been perfectly adequate for building elevated rapid transit lines in New York as early as the 1870s, the more costly construction of underground rapid transit lines was far beyond the ability of private corporations to finance. Hewitt set in motion a chain of events that sanctioned the use of public funds for subway construction, with the completed facility then to be leased to a private company for day-to-day operation. The private firm that emerged, both to build and to operate the first subway in New York, was called the Interborough Rapid Transit Company, a name that would later be rendered more crisply as the IRT. The City of New York and the Interborough Rapid transit Company inaugurated service over the city's first subway line on Thursday afternoon, October 27, 1904. Mayor George B. McClellan, ...
