Using examples and case studies from industry, academia and research literature, Randomized Clinical Trials provides a detailed overview of the key issues involved in designing, conducting, analysing and reporting randomized clinical trials. It examines the methodology for conducting Phase III clinical trials, developing the protocols, the practice for capturing, measuring, and analysing the resulting clinical data and their subsequent reporting. Randomized clinical trials are the principal method for determining the relative efficacy and safety of alternative treatments, interventions or medical devices. They are conducted by groups comprising one or more of pharmaceutical and allied health-care organisations, academic institutions, and charity supported research groups. In many cases such trials provide the key evidence necessary for the regulatory approval of a new product for future patient use. Randomized Clinical Trials provides comprehensive coverage of such trials, ranging from elementary to advanced level. Written by authors with considerable experience of clinical trials, Randomized Clinical Trials is an authoritative guide for clinicians, nurses, data managers and medical statisticians involved in clinical trials research and for health care professionals directly involved in patient care in a clinical trial context.

This volume addresses the relationship of adult education and health from different perspectives. One task of adulthood is caring for one's health and, for many, caring for the health of children, a partner or spouse, and/or aging parents. Changes in health or the desire for improved health often prompt the need for individuals to learn–and adult education can play a vital role in enabling this learning. Editor Lilian H. Hill, associate professor of adult education at the University of Southern Mississippi, and contributing authors assemble a comprehensive review of the critical issues involved including How adults learn while coping with chronic illness Health education within adult literacy, adult basic education, and English as a Second Language classes Approahces to help adults evaluate and learn from online information The influence of globalism on health and more. Concluding with Hill's own argument that health is a social justice issue, the volume illustrates how adult educators need to be involved in health education because they have valuable skills and knowledge to contribute, and because it is a meaningful arena in which to demonstrate the field's commitment to equity and social justice. This is the 130th volume of the Jossey-Bass quarterly report series New Directions for Adult and Continuing Education. Knobloch Julia, Yee Kwang Choon, Bushell Mary-Jessimine Peak Flow Meter Utilisation in Asthma Self-Management

Asthma is a common chronic disease in Australia with suboptimal self-care. The peak flow meter (PFM) is a simple device recommended as part of asthma self-management, but is largely underutilised in current practice. This project aims to explore the prospect of a pharmacist-instigated asthma self-management intervention, and whether the introduction of a PFM with appropriate education can improve asthma control and engagement in asthma self-management. The study was designed as a crossover before-and-after randomised controlled-intervention pilot study. Twelve participants completed the study, who were adults living in Darwin, previously diagnosed with asthma and did not use a PFM regularly. Participants in the intervention group were provided with a PFM and asthma education. The study then evaluated participants' awareness and asthma control using validated questionnaires and formative feedback. The effects of PFM utilisation on asthma knowledge and asthma control were not statistically significant in either groups, however, the majority of participants' feedback indicated an increased awareness and better quantification of asthma control.

As academic health centers receive greater pressure from the Institute of Medicine and accrediting agencies to reform health care education, the question of leadership arises. While there are studies of health sciences leaders in single disciplines, the literature does not contain leadership studies of interdisciplinary health sciences professionals. This study was designed to explore the leadership styles(s) of interdisciplinary health science education leaders at academic institutions who had Quentin Burdick Interdisciplinary Rural Health Training Grants. The present study determined whether a particular perceived leadership frame was predominate among interdisciplinary leaders and the relationship between leadership styles and continuation of interdisciplinary initiatives after grant funding ends. The results indicated a paired leadership approach of human resources and symbolism. This book provides valuable information to leadership of academic health centers and post secondary leaders of allied health professional schools interested in pursuing interdisciplinary education and collaboration in health sciences.

Franchelle P. Lubotzky The development, pilot and randomised controlled trial of a psychosexual rehabilitation information booklet for women undergoing pelvic radiation therapy for gynaecological or anorectal cancer

Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2015 in the subject Psychology - Clinic and Health Psychology, Abnormal Psychology, grade: Pass, The University of Sydney (The Centre for Medical Psychology and Evidence-based Decision Making, School of Psychology), course: PhD, language: English, abstract: Thias study entailed the development (Phase I), pilot (Phase II) and randomised controlled trial (RCT) (Phase III) of a psychosexual information booklet for women undergoing pelvic radiation therapy (PRT) for gynaecological or anorectal cancer. This was undertaken due to the high prevalence of psychosexual morbidity following PRT, and the lack of existing resources to facilitate recovery and reduce distress. The psychosexual information booklet was developed based on the literature, input from an expert multi-disciplinary advisory group, and published standards in developing information materials for cancer consumers. After the booklet development, a mainly qualitative retrospective pilot study was conducted which explored: a) women's experiences and rehabilitation informational needs following PRT; b) the feasibility and acceptability of providing women with an information booklet about radiation-induced side effects potentially affecting recovery, and especially sexual functioning/vaginal changes; and c) assessed the acceptability of a measurement protocol that would be used in a later RCT. The pilot highlighted many challenges to quality of life faced by women after PRT, ...

Nurse-led intervention research is a core component of the global initiative to improve quality of care. Though research in this area has already contributed much to the advancement of patient care, future strides depend on the dissemination of practical, how-to instruction on this important area of research. Design, Evaluation, and Translation of Nursing Interventions aids in this endeavour by presenting both general approaches and specific methods for developing nursing interventions. Logically organized to facilitate ease of use, the book is divided into four sections. The introduction provides a firm grounding in intervention science by situating it within the broader topics of evidence-based practice, client-centred care, and quality of care. Section Two describes each step of intervention design, including correct identification of the health issue or problem, clarification of the elements comprising an intervention, and application of theory. Section Three is centred on implementation, highlighting such topics as development of the intervention manual, training interventionists, and intervention fidelity. The book concludes with methods to evaluate interventions enacted and suggestions for their translation into practice. Design, Evaluation, and Translation of Nursing Interventions distills the authors’ years of expertise in intervention research into comprehensive, easy-to-follow chapters. The emergence of the discipline of encapsulation and controlled release has had a great impact on the food and dietary supplements sectors; principally around fortifying food systems with nutrients and health-promoting ingredients. The successful incorporation of these actives in food formulations depends on preserving their stability and bioavailability as well as masking undesirable flavors throughout processing, shelf life and consumption. This second edition of Encapsulation and Controlled Release Technologies in Food Systems serves as an improvement and a complement companion to the first. However, it differentiates itself in two main aspects. Firstly, it introduces the reader to novel encapsulation and controlled release technologies which have not yet been addressed by any existing book on this matter, and secondly, it offers an in-depth discussion on the impact of encapsulation and controlled release technologies on the bioavailability of health ingredients and other actives. In common with the first edition the book includes chapters written by distinguished authors and researchers in their respective areas of specialization. This book is designed as a reference for scientists and formulators in the food, nutraceuticals and consumer products industries who are looking to formulate new or existing products using microencapsulated ingredients. It is also a post-graduate text designed to provide students with an introduction to encapsulation and controlled release along with detailed coverage of various encapsulation technologies and their adaptability to specific applications.

Rosen Alan Early Intervention in Psychiatry. EI of Nearly Everything for Better Mental Health

Early intervention (EI) is the single most important advance in mental health care in recent decades, representing a key shift in both theoretical standpoint and service delivery. Early Intervention in Psychiatry clearly describes best practice for extending this approach to all psychiatric disorders. Beginning with the rationale for EI, it informs interventions in people from all age groups across the lifespan, from perinatal to old age. It addresses EI in specific settings, such as primary health care, community health, the general hospital, non-government agencies, and in social movements, and for specific disorders including depression and anxiety, alcohol and substance use, childhood disorders, psychoses, bipolar disorders, eating disorders and borderline personality disorders. Early Intervention in Psychiatry is an essential guide for all psychiatrists, general practitioners, family physicians and public health doctors. It is also a valuable resource for mental health professionals and primary care colleagues, including nurses, social workers, psychologists, occupational therapists, vocational rehabilitation specialists, peer and support workers and for mental health commissioners and policy-makers.

Sifat Ara Siddique Expanding Informal Sector Activities in Dhaka City. A Case Study of Education Coaching

The study of urban informal sector education has gained importance and expanded the scope and contents of the study in the last thirty years. One of the major challenges for geographers is finding the dynamics of this sector, as it is expanding gradually and a huge number of students are related to this activities. This research examines the role of education coaching as an urban informal activity. Dhaka city as a center of education has been experiencing the proliferation of coaching centers for the last twenty years. The mushrooming of coaching centers is symptomatic of the failure of Bangladesh's education system as a whole. Formal education institutions are failing to provide students with necessary instructions in the classrooms. This is why the guardians and their wards are making a beeline for education coaching. This research aims to describe the process of growth of coaching centers as an informal sector activity with a special emphasis on students' involvement in this process. As an empirical research, it follows a detailed questionnaire survey and direct interview method. This study discusses the size of economy controlled by the coaching centers, students' dependency on coaching and the impact of these phenomena.

Spirituality is an important part of diversity as determined by the National Association of Social Work Code of Ethics and the Education Policy and Education Standards. However, social work education is lacking in this area. Social workers report feeling unprepared and uncomfortable in addressing spirituality with clients. The purpose of this study was to compare hospice, mental health, and hospital social workers' perspectives, utilization and education on the use of spirituality in practice. A total of 41 social workers were surveyed and answers were analyzed with a Chi-Square and One-Way ANOVA. There was no difference in perspectives of spirituality between hospice, mental health and hospital social work respondents. There were some minor statistically significant differences in the utilization and training components, but overall, they were low in all three groups.

Public Health Law Research: Theory and Methods definitively explores the mechanisms, theories and models central to public health law research – a growing field dedicated to measuring and studying law as a central means for advancing public health. Editors Alexander C. Wagenaar and Scott Burris outline integrated theory drawn from numerous disciplines in the social and behavioral sciences; specific mechanisms of legal effect and guidelines for collecting and coding empirical datasets of statutory and case law; optimal research designs for randomized trials and natural experiments for public health law evaluation; and methods for qualitative and cost-benefit studies of law.. They also discuss the challenge of effectively translating the results of scientific evaluations into public health laws and highlight the impact of this growing field. “How exactly the law can best be used as a tool for protecting and enhancing the public’s health has long been the subject of solely opinion and anecdote. The three professions that are the basic foundations of the country--education, health care and law--have become market driven and bloated with excessive spending. Tens of billions of dollars could be saved annually and applied to other important government programs if education, health care and law were restructured to meet society's needs in the 21st century rather than the needs of profiteers. Higher education is the next housing crisis. Tens of thousands of students are unnecessarily borrowing money to attend on campus classes that will place them in lifelong debt. A world class education in fact can be had on the cheap. In the old days many people lived long lives, often 80 plus years, under the most primitive and unhealthy conditions. We should be able to do the same thing today an thus reduce the cost of health care that amounts to $2.7 trillion a year business.Very few people can afford an attorney. The chapter "A Rule That Is Ruining the Legal Profession" discusses how the unnecessary high cost of legal education is denying millions of Americans the justice they deserve.

Policy makers agree that public subsidies on education and health produce positive externalities and have spill over effect in the society. This research is designed to analyse the effects of public spending of education and health on income distribution which examine the pre-expenditure and post-expenditure income distribution in Thailand. It follows the benefit incidence analysis (BIA) that is a method of computing the distribution of public expenditure across different demographic groups, such as women and men. The procedure involves allocating per unit public subsidies (for example, expenditure per student for the education sector) according to individual utilization rates of public services. This paper aims at examine who are the real beneficiaries from the government expenditure. The study uses the quantitative method where data are used of 2010. Seminar paper from the year 1991 in the subject Sociology - Work, Profession, Education, Organisation, grade: A, University of the West Indies (School of Education), course: Sociology of Education, language: English, abstract: 'The Determinants of Academic Achievement' have been the subject of much discussion in the past and up to recent times. Extensive studies have been done and diverse conclusions have been reached. Earlier research was centered on developed countries, but recent times have seen an emphasis on developing countries and this has given rise to much controversy over the extent to which school and non-school factors influence academic achievement and the educational benefits of increasing expenditure on policy controlled schooling variables. The observation has been made by Simmons and Alexander (1980) that home background or parental socio-economic status generally has a stronger influence on student performance at primary and lower secondary grades than the policy-controlled schooling variables. Their conclusions were drawn, in part, from a review of a number of studies conducted by the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement (IEA) in developed countries. Using the education production function (EPF) approach, Simmons and Alexander sought to equate the relative cost of school inputs to the relative value of outputs. Their conclusions have been variously supported, challenged or contradicted by previous and subsequent res...

Join the dialogue on the future of qualitative inquiry for equity in higher education. Beginning with the premise that equity is of paramount concern in the study of higher education, this text explores the promise and pitfalls of qualitative inquiry with respect to addressing issues of in/equity and fostering social change at micro, meso, and macro levels. Building upon contemporary qualitative higher education scholarship, the authors advance a critique of the reductive and generic conceptions of qualitative research that dominate the field and call upon scholars to examine the transformative potential embedded within critical qualitative inquiry. In addition to exploring the opportunities and tensions associated with engaging in critical qualitative inquiry, this monograph issues a call to action through intervention, describing strategies for challenging and resisting oppressive research norms that undermine the equity aims of higher education research. This is Volume 37 Issue 6 of the Jossey-Bass publication ASHE Higher Education Report. Each monograph in the series is the definitive analysis of a tough higher education problem, based on thorough research of pertinent literature and institutional experiences. Topics are identified by a national survey. Noted practitioners and scholars are then commissioned to write the reports, with experts providing critical reviews of each manuscript before publication.

Scientific Essay from the year 2017 in the subject Medicine - Alternative Medicine, , language: English, abstract: Integrative health care encompasses measures and activities that aim to achieve an increase of human health resources and the potential of maintaining and improving human health. The term describes the process of empowering individuals to increase their control over determinants of health and thus to positively impact their health. The focus is hereby not only on an individual's behavior, knowledge, and abilities, but also on social, economic, and environmental circumstances. From a holistic perspective, health is defined as physical, psychological, and social wellbeing that is impacted by individual, social, and societal backgrounds. Hence, health is not so much a condition or a goal but rather a resource of daily life. Due to demographic developments, we experience an increase of the population segment with chronic conditions while at the same time less people are paying into the social security system. Chronically ill people not only suffer from their primary disease but also the associated side effects, as in the case of co- and multi-morbidities. A growing shortage of qualified personnel in the service sector and the obscurity of health care structures complicate the access to qualitatively optimized health care. A transformed social framework, reflected in the abolishment of the intergenerational contract and the rise of single households, signifies an ...

This book examines the National Education Board Conference reports as a means of exploring both change and continuity in the Turkish national system of education during mainly the 1940's and 1950's. The author has focused specifically within the context of the political transition between the single-party and multi-party periods. The book's aim is to delve into the details of how the roles, functions, and perceptions of the Conferences evolved within two very dynamic decades. The contextual portion of the book focuses on producing a framework in which to place the developments of the education system from the birth of the Republic until the military intervention of 1960 and focusing on the push for a nationalistic system of schooling. The analytical section examines more specific aspects of the Board Conferences themselves, aiming to scrutinize the weight of the Board's advisory role to the Ministry of Education on issues of religion, technical schooling, the Village Institutes, and democracy in education; all subjects that have emerged as some of the most basic controversies of modern Turkish education today.

Cluster randomised trials are trials in which groups (or clusters) of individuals are randomly allocated to different forms of treatment. In health care, these trials often compare different ways of managing a disease or promoting healthy living, in contrast to conventional randomised trials which randomise individuals to different treatments, classically comparing new drugs with a placebo. They are increasingly common in health services research. This book addresses the statistical, practical, and ethical issues arising from allocating groups of individuals, or clusters, to different interventions. Key features: Guides readers through the stages of conducting a trial, from recruitment to reporting. Presents a wide range of examples with particular emphasis on trials in health services research and primary care, with both principles and techniques explained. Topics are specifically presented in the order in which investigators think about issues when they are designing a trial. Combines information on the latest developments in the field together with a practical guide to the design and implementation of cluster randomised trials. Explains principles and techniques through numerous examples including many from the authors own experience. Includes a wide range of references for those who wish to read further. This book is intended as a practical guide, written for researchers from the health professions including doctors, psychologists, and allied health professionals, as well as statisticians involved in the design, execution, analysis and reporting of cluster randomised trials. Those with a more general interest will find the plentiful examples illuminating.

Projektarbeit aus dem Jahr 2017 im Fachbereich Politik - Internationale Politik - Thema: Völkerrecht und Menschenrechte, , Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Humanitarian intervention is an issue at the centre of international relations and is shrouded in uncertainty. The logic supporting humanitarian intervention is clear in that it aims to save lives and end conflict. Yet, many questions remain as to what is the correct approach to humanitarian intervention. This dissertation aims to clarify these questions through exploring a cosmopolitan approach to humanitarian intervention. Drawing on extensive research, a thin cosmopolitan approach is promoted as the most feasible within the current international order. This approach is developed through an exploration of ethical cosmopolitanism which addresses such questions as when to intervene, who may intervene and how to execute the intervention. A cosmopolitan approach also requires institutional change but the more radical and traditional ideas that cosmopolitanism is associated with such as the creation of a world government or a world army clash with the contemporary international order of states. For this reason, a regional humanitarian intervention force alongside a thin cosmopolitan ethical basis capable of functioning within the current international order will be proposed.Ultimately, having utilized the framework of the contemporary international order it is concluded that a cosmopolitan approach to humanitarian intervention is f...

Developing healthy sexual behaviors is critical to adolescents’ wellbeing. While more emphasis has been on negative outcomes, there are broad positive implications for physical health, mental health, intimate relationships, and identity development. The Intervention Mapping bible, updated with new theory, trends, and cases Planning Health Promotion Programs is the «bible» of the field, guiding students and practitioners through the planning process from a highly practical perspective. Using an original framework called Intervention Mapping, this book presents a series of steps, tasks, and processes that help you develop effective health promotion and education programs using a variety of approaches. As no single model can accurately predict all health behavior or environmental changes, this book shows you how to choose useful theories and integrate constructs from multiple theories to describe health problems and develop appropriate promotion and education solutions. This new fourth edition has been streamlined for efficiency, with information on the latest theories and trends in public health, including competency-based training and inter-professional education. New examples and case studies show you these concepts in action, and the companion website provides lecture slides, additional case studies, and a test bank to bring this book directly into the classroom. Health education and health promotion is a central function of many public health roles, and new models, theories, and planning approaches are always emerging. This book guides you through the planning process using the latest developments in the field, and a practical approach that serves across discipline boundaries. Merge multiple theories into a single health education solution Learn the methods and processes of intervention planning Gain a practical understanding of multiple planning approaches Get up to date on the latest theories, trends, and developments in the field Both academic and practice settings need a realistic planning handbook based on system, not prescription. Planning Health Promotion Programs is the essential guide to the process, equipping you with the knowledge and skills to develop solutions without a one-size-fits-all approach.
