After a historical overview of how graphic cards have evolved, the peculiarities of GPU and CPU hardware are discussed. Based on this knowledge, OpenCL is introduced as an API supporting all kinds of processing hardware. A deeper look into OpenCL's execution and memory model, which allows handling heterogeneous hardware, is rounded off by a simple, yet full example code.The thesis then continues with several implementations of standard algorithms for the GPU. The chosen problems start with matrix multiplication and go along with the all-prefix sum and sorting. As the first problem already offers parallelism naturally, performance analysis and optimization is focused during the first implementation chapter. The all-prefix sum and sorting are both problems being more dicult to split into independent pieces of work. Techniques will be discussed to tackle such kind of problems.Each GPU implementation is benchmarked and compared with one or more traditional CPU approaches. As GPUs and CPUs have different hardware architectures, appropriate algorithms and optimizations have been chosen to solve the problems by exploiting the underlying platform at best.

The modern FPGAs enable system designers to develop high-performance computing (HPC) applications with a large amount of parallelism. Real-time image processing is such a requirement that demands much more processing power than a conventional processor can deliver. In this research, we implemented software and hardware based architectures on FPGA to achieve real-time image processing. Furthermore, we benchmark and compare our implemented architectures with existing architectures. The operational structures of those systems consist of on-chip processors or custom vision coprocessors implemented in a parallel manner with efficient memory and bus architectures. The performance properties such as the accuracy, throughput and efficiency are measured and presented.According to results, FPGA implementations are faster than the DSP and GPP implementations for algorithms which can exploit a large amount of parallelism. Our image pre-processing architecture is nearly two times faster than the optimized software implementation on an Intel Core 2 Duo GPP. However, because of the higher clock frequency of DSPs/GPPs, the processing speed for sequential computations on on-chip processors in FPGAs is slower than on DSPs/GPPs. These on-chip processors are well suited for multi-processor systems for software level parallelism. A new modular design method for design of n x n multipliers using Vedic algorithm for multiplication has been proposed. The proposed design method uses more number of gates than array multiplier using Wallace tree but offers the advantages of simple and systematic interconnection scheme and maximum design reuse.

Particle filters are advanced for building robust object trackers capable of operation under difficult tracking conditions. An Excitation Particle Filter (EPF) is introduced in this book for object tracking. A new likelihood model is proposed. It depends on multiple likelihood functions: position likelihood; gray level intensity likelihood and similarity likelihood. Also, we modify the PF as a robust estimator to overcome the well-known sample impoverishment problem of the PF. The proposed enhanced PF (EPF) is implemented in software and evaluated. Simulation results demonstrated the superior performance of the proposed tracker in terms of accuracy, robustness and occlusion over classical tracking algorithms. Three efficient novel hardware architectures of the Sample Important Resample Filter (SIRF) and the EPF are introduced and implemented on FPGA platform. These architectures feature speed improvement, efficient memory utilization, and/or hardware resource saving.

This study describes the concepts, tools and selected algorithms being used for sequence analysis and recent works which have been done in the field of Sequence Analysis. Alignment of protein sequences is an elementary step in the analysis of biological data. It has traditionally been applied to analyzing protein families for conserved motifs, phylogeny, structural properties, and to improve sensitivity in homology searching. In this research work, a new method, coined as Global Alignment Tool (GLAT) is developed to improve both the accuracy and speed of sequence alignment. We compared the accuracy of this method to other popular methods.

Cluster or co-cluster analyses are important tools in a variety of scientific areas. The introduction of this book presents a state of the art of already well-established, as well as more recent methods of co-clustering. The authors mainly deal with the two-mode partitioning under different approaches, but pay particular attention to a probabilistic approach. Chapter 1 concerns clustering in general and the model-based clustering in particular. The authors briefly review the classical clustering methods and focus on the mixture model. They present and discuss the use of different mixtures adapted to different types of data. The algorithms used are described and related works with different classical methods are presented and commented upon. This chapter is useful in tackling the problem of co-clustering under the mixture approach. Chapter 2 is devoted to the latent block model proposed in the mixture approach context. The authors discuss this model in detail and present its interest regarding co-clustering. Various algorithms are presented in a general context. Chapter 3 focuses on binary and categorical data. It presents, in detail, the appropriated latent block mixture models. Variants of these models and algorithms are presented and illustrated using examples. Chapter 4 focuses on contingency data. Mutual information, phi-squared and model-based co-clustering are studied. Models, algorithms and connections among different approaches are described and illustrated. About the Authors Gérard Govaert is Professor at the University of Technology of Compiègne, France. He is also a member of the CNRS Laboratory Heudiasyc (Heuristic and diagnostic of complex systems). His research interests include latent structure modeling, model selection, model-based cluster analysis, block clustering and statistical pattern recognition. He is one of the authors of the MIXMOD (MIXtureMODelling) software. Mohamed Nadif is Professor at the University of Paris-Descartes, France, where he is a member of LIPADE (Paris Descartes computer science laboratory) in the Mathematics and Computer Science department. His research interests include machine learning, data mining, model-based cluster analysis, co-clustering, factorization and data analysis.
