James R. Scales, Danney Goble Oklahoma Politics. A History

"Oklahoma Politics might well be the best general history of a Western state."Western Historical Quarterly"Thoroughly researched and well written, this book is a solid study of the evolution of Oklahoma's political system."Southwestern Historical QuarterlyOklahoma Politics offers a thorough and accurate history of the state's government. Beginning with the elections of the territorial era, the authors progress through the early 1980s, covering every major election in the state's history and including biographical sketches of promintent political figures, discussion of controversies in the statehouse, and explanation of the state's role in national affairs.Although comprehensive in scope, Oklahoma Politics is more than a compendium of political data. The authors examine the history of the commonwealth as something of a model for understanding the evolution of state politics in general during the twentieth century. Born during the Progressive Era, the state has been host to nearly every major force in American state politics since: grassroots agrarian radicalism, a potent Ku Klux Klan, the turmoil of the Great Depression, the post-World War II revolution in the federal-state relationship, and the emergence of modern Republican conservatism, all making Oklahoma a laboratory of political change.Incorporating many findings of political scientists, the authors develop a new perspective from which to view Oklahoma's political history, but without ...

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2016 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Region: Near East, Near Orient, grade: A-, , course: Political Islam, language: English, abstract: 'Identity and a Modern State' was the official slogan adopted by the first Salafi Al-Nour party during the Egyptian revolution of 2011. This remarked only as the beginning to the politicization process of the Salafi orientation in Egypt. On July 3 2013, however, the military intervened and deposed the Muslim Brotherhood's Mohamed Morsi, the first elected Islamist president in a modern Egyptian discourse. This research study will focus on the reasons why Egyptian Salafis have integrated themselves into politics in the first place using the components of political opportunity theory as a conceptual framework of the study.

Mohamud Mohamed Salad National Security Dynamics in Somalia in the post-Siad Barre era

Master's Thesis from the year 2016 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Region: Africa, , course: master of science in strategic studies, language: English, abstract: Somalia was one of the first states to crumble in the post-cold war era. This study seeks to explain the destruction of the Somali state from a security perspective, arguing that a plethora of factors including the political economy of class and regional dynamics underscored the dissolution of the Somali nation-state and that the emergence of political Islam to fill the political vacuum configured the pattern of security challenges facing the country. In doing so, this study utilizes the qualitative research design premised on the interview technique as the main data collection method. What is clear from this study is that to explain the destruction of Somalia and its security abyss we must probe deeper to uncover the points of fracture of the Somali social order, as well as external factors obscured by an emphasis on clan tensions by media and scholarly reportage. Hence, explaining Somalia's dissolution and its attendant security challenges is a contribution to the ongoing project of theorizing the global disintegration of nation-states in the post-Cold War era. All things considered, it is hoped that this study will provide professionals and scholars insights on the challenges of African security in the Twenty-First century.

Aristotle's Ethics and Politics are the main sources of philosophy that he was known for. In Ethics he argued for the view that virtues are what make up the ethical behaviour of any person. In order to be a "good person" ethics must be present in the form of virtues. Meanwhile in Politics, he argues that the city or state must come before family which comes before the individual. The idea that the need s of the many outweighs the needs of the few had its roots in Aristotle's philosophy of politics.

Project Report from the year 2016 in the subject Politics - International Politics - General and Theories, Bielefeld University (bghs), language: English, abstract: This study explores how Bourdieusian structural constructivism contributes to our understanding of state identity in international relations. While there has been a significant concentration of constructivism on the description and understanding of state identity, constructivist approaches still have not comprehensively answered all the controversial questions of structural theories. The aim of the book, thus, is to improve understanding of state subjectivity and identity by means of Bourdieusian sociological approach, which provides a basis to form a middle-way between the structuralist and constructivist perspectives on the issues of identity and state. I test the applicability of Bourdieusian terminology in the fields of economic and social capital. In order to illustrate the theoretical dabates of the research in a more comprehensive way, the chapters in this stage utilize distinctive methodological concepts of neoliberalism, democratisation and the developing state. Ultimately, the book determines how Bourdieusian structural constructivism improves the theory of international relations beyond the existing borders of constructivism.

Singer argued in 2004. In international relations scholarship, numerous research is available on this topic since the PMI started its rise during the 1990s. After having identified a rather "new" phenomenon in world politics, the process of the politicization and analytical analysis follows, drawing a comparison to a policy-analysis approach. Doing research on private actors in world politics, offering services falling within the military domain, from a postinternational perspective is a rather new thing. Most researchers analyze the PMI as such, their institutional design, their organization and classify them according to the services they offer. This research is based on a different approach. It analyzes the implications of the PMI to the Westphalian state and state system by referring to postinternationalism as a worldview. What constitutes the postinternational worldview - and what indicators I will use based on this worldview - is explained in part II dealing with theory. Michaela Pelican Masks and Staffs. Identity Politics in the Cameroon Grassfields

The Cameroon Grassfields, home to three ethnic groups - Grassfields societies, Mbororo, and Hausa - provide a valuable case study for the anthropological examination of identity politics and interethnic relations. In the midst of the political liberalization of Cameroon in the late 1990s and 2000s, local responses to political and legal changes took the form of a series of performative and discursive expressions of ethnicity. Confrontational encounters stimulated by economic and political rivalry, as well as socially integrative processes, transformed collective self-understanding in Cameroon in conjunction with recent global discourses on human, minority, and indigenous rights. The book provides a vital contribution to the study of ethnicity, conflict, and social change in the anthropology of Africa.

The Politics of Global Supply Chains analyses the changing politics of power and distribution within contemporary global supply chains. Drawing on over 300 interviews with farmers, workers, activists, businesses and government officials in garment and coffee sector supply chains, the book shows how the increased involvement of non-state actors in supply chain governance is re-shaping established patterns of global political power, responsibility and accountability. These emerging supply chain governance systems are shown to be multi-layered and politically contested, as transnational governance schemes interact with traditional state governance arrangements in both complementary and conflicting ways. The book’s analysis of changes to the relationship between state and non-state actors within transnational governance processes will be of particular interest to scholars and students of globalisation, global governance and regulation. The Politics of Global Supply Chains also suggests some practical ways by which the effectiveness and accountability of supply chain governance could be strengthened, which will interest both scholars and practitioners in fields of global business regulation and corporate social responsibility. Conclusions are relevant to the business and civil society actors who participate directly in non-state governance schemes, and to state regulators whose distinctive governance capacities could play a much greater role than at present in supporting transnational, non-state governance processes.

The aim of the study, therefore, is to establish how, as a result of globalisation, the state is no longer able to fully provide security to its citizens. This study started off by outlining globalisation as a process of transformation. The ambivalent and contradictory nature of the process of globalisation was revealed. It was argued that the process of globalisation has an uneven effect on the people of the world. The second part of this study dealt with the concept of human security in the post-Cold War period. It was highlighted that the post-Cold War period necessitated a rethink of the traditional militaristic approach to security. It was shown that the military view of security was restricting and limiting the scope of study of security. Hence a need for a more inclusive approach was necessary. As a result, the security horizon was widened to include not only military, but also economic, political, social and environmental dimensions. The third section dealt with the complex relationship between globalisation and security. This important book analyzes the dubious role of the so-called Democratic Antifascist Youth Movement 'Nashi' in contemporary Russia. Part and parcel of the Putinist project of political stabilization, Nashi dominates state-sponsored youth politics in Russia, communicating demands from official discourse to a young audience. Idealizing the past, present, and future of Putin's Russia, Nashi mobilized young Russians through its emotional appeal, skillful use of symbolic politics and the promise for professional self-realization. However, the movement's impact remains limited - mostly due to its internal contradictions.Based on original and meticulous research, Ivo Mijnssen skillfully picks apart the dynamics underlying Nashi's influence and furthers a deeper understanding of state-sponsored youth politics in early 21st century Russia.

Master's Thesis from the year 2010 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Topic: Development Politics, University of Sussex (Institute of Development Studies), language: English, abstract: The purpose of this study is to move beyond conventional thinking on rural water (and sanitation) infrastructure and resource management. The study acknowledges the existence of other water management and sanitation tools but it engages its argument from a knowledge management perspective. In most rural areas, water and sanitation projects have been implemented and community members only enjoy these facilities for a short time. Why? The reason is simple. Most donors and governments are often concerned with the specificity of their projects/programmes, long-term sustainability is rarely guaranteed and those who are left to manage these water systems lack the necessary capacities (skills & knowledge). Consequently, after few years of implementation most water supply are been closed down while sanitation structures are fast deteriorating due to poor management and lack of post-project government/donor support. This study on water and sanitation knowledge management (WKM) highlights some of these pitfalls in rural Cameroon; it acknowledges the fact that knowledge is always incomplete and that rural water supply systems are in themselves a complex and dynamic system involving risks and uncertainties. The study takes a look at the recent literatures on water resource managemen...

Ken Ritchie The Reform Debates

This book looks at the state of British democracy and how it has been undermined by the power of money, changes in society and changes in the nature of politics. It argues that politics should belong to us all and that citizens should be sovereign. Ken Ritchie and guest contributors propose reforms, including changes to the electoral system, controlling the influence of corporate interests, regulating the media while protecting freedoms, replacing the monarchy with an elected head of state, defending human rights and giving the UK a written constitution.

Daniel Kemmis Community and the Politics of Place

Thomas Jefferson envisioned a nation of citizens deeply involved in public life. Today Americans are lamenting the erosion of his ideal. What happened in the intervening centuries? Daniel Kemmis argues that our loss of capacity for public life (which impedes our ability to resolve crucial issues) parallels our loss of a sense of place. A renewed sense of inhabitation, he maintains -of community rooted in place and of people dwelling in that place in a practiced way-can shape politics into a more cooperative and more humanly satisfying enterprise, producing better people, better communities, and better places. The author emphasizes the importance of place by analyzing problems and possibilities of public life in a particular place- those northern states whose settlement marked the end of the old frontier. National efforts to "keep citizens apart" by encouraging them to develop open country and rely upon impersonal, procedural methods for public problems have bred stalemate, frustration, and alienation. As alternatives he suggests how western patterns of inhabitation might engender a more cooperative, face-to-face practice of public life.Community and the Politics of Place also examines our ambivalence about the relationship between cities and rural areas and about the role of corporations in public life. The book offers new insight into the relationship between politics and economics and addresses the question of whether the nation-state is an appropriate entity for the...

Stef Monaco Human rights, fossil fuels and contemporary structures of power. A study of fracking in the UK

Master's Thesis from the year 2017 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Topic: Public International Law and Human Rights, grade: A, University of London (School of Advanced Studies, Institute of Commonwealth Studies), language: English, abstract: In the UK, successive governments since 2010 have positioned unconventional fossil fuels at the centre of their energy policy in spite of overwhelming scientific evidence that the planet cannot sustain the current level of fossil fuel consumption and that anthropogenic ecological degradation is driving us towards an extinction-level event. They have continued to push forwards with it despite fierce public opposition and mounting evidence of violations of human rights due to its negative ecological consequences and the way the police handle the continuous demonstrations against it.Through a qualitative study of the policing tactics used at anti-fracking protests; I explore how UK politics and policy-making have moved away from the foundational ideas of democracy (a representative government to protect and promote the wellbeing of the many) to an institutional system that exists to ensure the wealth and power of the few - a hegemonic elite, in Gramscian terms. I argue that the logic of neoliberal capitalism has given rise to structures of power and policy choices are resulting in human rights violations and making it almost impossible to adopt environmental policy options that will prevent ecological destruction.

Abigail Gacusana Community Based Adaptation to Climate Change. A Case Study of Bangladesh

Thesis (M.A.) from the year 2008 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Topic: Development Politics, grade: Merit, University of Birmingham, course: International Development, language: English, abstract: Climate change is a global concern with its impending threats to economies, human development and the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals. Climate change impacts are currently being observed and studies show that poor countries are the most vulnerable. Using Bangladesh as a case study, this research examines the impacts of climate change to poor, rural communities and further explores the measures that are carried out to combat its existing and future threats. This research also aims to look into the existing socio-economic vulnerabilities of Bangladesh in order to establish the linkage between climate change and development. Findings of this study show that poor communities are impacted by climate change through the loss of lives, assets and livelihoods. Adaptation to climate change is therefore necessary and should be integrated in development planning and objectives, to ensure that the most vulnerable groups are represented. Overall this research has observed that Bangladesh is still lacking this capacity, despite the spontaneous adaptation being practised by local communities. This study has further observed that the most common response in addressing climate change impacts to vulnerable communities in Bangladesh is community-based adaptation, whi...

Alexander Boni Thatcherism Revisited

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2011 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Region: Western Europe, University of Exeter (College of Social Sciences and International Studies), course: BA (Hons) Economics & Politics, language: English, abstract: Thatcherism continues to be one of the most contentious approaches in British politics today, just as its figurehead continues to be one of the most divisive figures in British political history. Despite its regard with both shame and pride within the Conservative party, it remains an influential approach to polity today, affecting every government that has followed Mrs Thatcher's.The philosophy that Thatcher and her closest allies embodied and brought to life between 1979 and 1990 is being exhumed for its values of a smaller state and a stronger, more independent economy following a ruinous financial crisis and critical public examination of national finances. The Keynesian renaissance that took hold at the height of the financial crisis has lost grip and ground to a resurgence in what is essentially a Thatcherite consensus. This dissertation will first explore the key philosophical points of Thatcherism, exemplified during her time in office as Prime Minister. Secondly, it will examine the legacy of Thatcher and how Thatcherism has been an undeniable influence on politics since 1990. Finally, it will examine whether a return to stronger Thatcherite influences on public policy are desirable in light of an on-going ec...

Philip Schleifer How to Make Better Factories

Master's Thesis from the year 2009 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Topic: Development Politics, grade: 1,0, Free University of Berlin (Otto-Suhr Institut für Politikwissenschaft), language: English, abstract: How can new governance arrangements such as public-private partnerships contribute to business regulation in developing economies? More specifically, which governance instruments are best suited to make domestic for-profit actors comply with social standards? Seeking to address these broader questions, this study opens with a puzzle of varying degrees of labour standard compliance across Asia's garment economies. Whereas problems with labour standards persist throughout the region, evidence points to improved compliance in Cambodia's garment sector. This improvement is supposed to be due to an innovative policy project called Better Factories Cambodia, which involves public and private actors from different levels to induce compliance in an extremely difficult environment. Drawing on compliance theory, the study advances the hypothesis that this success is due to a combination of management and enforcement instruments. A comparison of Cambodia's and Bangladesh's garment sectors and a process analysis of the causal mechanisms in operation verify this complementary-compliance-hypothesis. Thereby, the study lays a foundation for future theory-guided research on business regulation through new modes of governance.

The record shows that he had more votes on a major party line than any other senator. One of his more memorable elections was in 1983 when he won a surprising victory in the Republican dominated town of Bethlehem, which hadnt elected a local Democrat in its 188 year history.Howard was always pushing for positive change and challenging the status quo, which is why his relationship with Albany mayor Erastus Corning, backed by the powerful Democratic machine, was often tumultuous. He was called Albanys Man of La Mancha, because he dared to take on the unbeatable foe in Corning, which helped to bring Albany into the modern era.So, get ready to be impressed by an American original who built a lasting legacy around Politics and Ponies.

Frank J. Goodnow The Principles of the Administrative Law of the United States

THE DISTINCTION BETWEEN "POLITICS" AND "ADMINISTRATION"According to Goodnow, politics is concerned with policy and other expressions of state will. Administration is concerned with the faithful execution of enacted legislation. He observes that administration has a tendency to overstep this boundary and concedes that politics must therefore monitor administration to keep it in line with the state's will. Reprint of first edition."From both the legal and historical standpoint the book contains many things that are richly suggestive. There is very little in our legal or political literature so penetrating as for example the exposition of the effects of confinement of the principle of separation of powers to the central government. (...) It is not written for the legal profession directly, but to those lawyers who seek more than a working tool in their profession, a true appraisement of the administrative law, it will appeal. The writing of such a work moreover is a signal public service." --6 Columbia Law Review (1906) 133While a member of the Columbia faculty, FRANK J. GOODNOW [1859-1939] was the first individual in the United States to hold a professorship in administrative law. He became the first president of the American Political Science Association, which offers an annual award in his name, and was president of Johns Hopkins University from 1915-1929.

Findley Penn-Hughes A Fool.s Paradise. Ethnicity, Military and Prospects for Democratisation in Myanmar

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2013 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Region: Far East, grade: 68, Durham University (School of Government & International Affairs), course: Politics, language: English, abstract: State and military power have been formally fused in Myanmar since the military coup of 1962. Colonial and pre-colonial experiences prior to this had ensured the creation of a national narrative that emphasised unity and the survival of the regime above all else. This led to the slow infiltration of military rule in the years following independence in 1948 and ultimately to the decades of authoritarian rule and economic mismanagement, exacerbated by economic sanctions. As the rest of the region began its post-colonial transition towards democracy and prosperity, brutal military crackdowns and reprisals following populist uprisings in 1988 and 2007 seemed only to confirm Myanmar's resilience. Following the suppression of the 2007 uprising, it appeared that the hold of the military junta was absolute. The announcement in 2008 by the ruling State Peace and Development Council (SPDC) of wide-ranging reforms as part of the 'roadmap to democracy' thus represented the greatest hope of democratic reform for half a century. Following the enactment of constitutional reforms and trumpeted elections in 2010, the state now represents an ostensibly democratic, constitutional system. Throughout early 2011 the newly formed 'civilian' government ...

Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2015 in the subject Sociology - Political Sociology, Majorities, Minorities, grade: 1,8, University of Freiburg (Institute of Sociology), course: Sociology, language: English, abstract: This thesis argues that we can no longer ignore elite's enrolment of institutions in rendering what they do intelligible as political outcomes in our understanding of African politics. The complex interdependency between elites and institution inheres into politics in ways political practices and actions are fabricated as permissible in the state of affair. This interaction is best understood through Actor-Network Theory (ANT) which essentializes hybridization in its conceptualization of the world. In this network thinking, transitional elites align and advance their interests through translating and enrolling institutions in the process of democratization. The analysis draws from Nigeria's democratization experience to bring together the institutional components of the state and leadership, i.e. elites, which have been mostly analyzed as separate entities in the study of democratization. The actor-network theory is used both as a conceptual frame and as a method for analyzing democratization as an outcome of the content of the two main societal forces- elite and institution. The actor-network theory's, developed by Michel Callon and Bruno Latour, and their collaborators, flat ontology provides a way to bypass agency/structure dichotomy t...

Joffrey Doma Sino-African Relations of Oil. Win-win or Chinese Neo-imperialism.

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2017 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Region: Africa, grade: 24.0, Lancaster University, course: Politics and International Relations, language: English, abstract: This report differs from previous studies of Sino-African relations, for one the paper successfully theorizes the relations and demonstrates that studying the relationship must be carried out based on China and individual countries, rather than China and Africa as a continent. And secondly, the core purpose of this paper is understanding how China interacts with African countries, and understanding the basic elements inherent in their interactions. This research presents a holistic study of Sino-African relations with the case studies of Nigeria and Sudan, with a focus on the three factors of politics, economics, and socio-environmental implications. Framing the paper in this manner allows the researcher to develop a theory for the study, and allows for the critical development of literature that helps to explain if the relations contains elements of neo-imperialism, or if indeed, the economic interaction is one that can be described as a win-win. Basically, this paper seeks to use literature to establish Sino-African relations as neo-colonial or neo-imperial, or as a win-win South-South cooperation.

Babajide Ololajulo The Oil Producing Community Identity in Nigeria. A Politico-economic Resource

Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2009 in the subject African Studies, University of Nigeria (University of Ibadan, Nigeria), language: English, abstract: This paper focuses on the socio-political and economic issues involved in the production of oil producing and non-oil producing communities as categories of identification in Nigeria. Using Ilaje people of Ondo State as a case, this paper, through qualitative methods of study, examines the factors of history, elite politics, and the state in identity formulation and the effects which the construction of the "other" among a supposed homogeneous group has on the existing forms of social relationship. It is established from the study that though the advantage of the oil producing community identity is utilized to attain political and economic height, the identity remains subordinate to a much larger and inclusive Ilaje identity. Generally, this paper is a reflection on how identity is manipulated even in the local context to suit competition for resources. It discusses the cultural creation of space and its hegemonization in quest of making exclusive and optimum advantage of resource in the space. The paper concludes that even when the spatial differentiation is yet to generate any remarkable conflict, the feelings of "oneness" appears to have been sufficiently weakened.

Malika Rebai Maamri The Dimensions of Democratic Citizenship in Algeria

Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2014 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Region: Africa, , language: English, abstract: By mid-twentieth century, citizenship and democracy had become a grand narrative about cohesion within society as well as about representation and misrepresentation within the modern state. Building a national identity proceeds hand-in-hand with the tasks of building a legitimate state and democratic institutions. In Africa for instance, the issues of democracy and citizenship have come to the centre stage. Many post-independent African governments have attempted to construct and strengthen the national consciousness of their citizens. Such policy formed part of broader projects meant to develop and promote national identity and the ties that bind them to one another as well as emphasize the bonds between state and citizens. However the blurring of such issues as participation, civil society, nation-state, citizenship and democracy, robbed as it were, the public sphere of its 'ideal' status, particularly with regard to its potential as an integrative force in society. While pervasive poverty constitutes the main hindrance to democracy in some countries, in others, the democratic deficit rests on other considerations. Everyday experience of citizenship in post-colonial Algeria has revolved around a sense of what is lacking, the absence of entitlements, respect and dignity shattered by the French colonisers, a sense of longi...

The onset of this paper is a riddle. A number of scholars stress the positive impact of remittances on a society and its democratization. The Philippines has successfully sought to gain more remittances through a state driven labor export scheme and has been for many years among the top receiving countries in the world. Despite those conditions deemed propitious to democratization, the Philippines show many democracy deficits. Several scholars have claimed that remittances impact positively on democratization. However, a range of democratization indicators for the Philippines, belie this assertion. This paper delves into various aspects of the democratization, migration and remittance dynamics. Firstly, it examines the scholarly work on remittances (always understood in a wider sense, as comprising social and financial remittances) and the democratization history in the Philippines. Secondly, it argues the methodology used for this paper. Thirdly, it evaluates and describes a selected number of particularities of the Philippine democratic system and its labor export scheme. It interprets the impact of remittances on democratization in the Philippines before drawing conclusions.TABLE OF CONTENTSIntroduction 5Rese...

Questions abound about why Somaliland finds itself in this situation when there are territories which obtained recognition after fulfilling a fraction of what Somaliland has achieved. This study contributes to answering the aforementioned questions. This study has certain objectives. It delved into the examination of the criteria that is used for the recognition of states in the international system. It also analyses the role of intergovernmental organizations in the non-recognition of Somaliland. The objective of this study is also to make an assessment of the nature of interactions between Somaliland, and other actors in the international system.
