This book is based on a research study conducted in the district of Birbhum of West Bengal, India. The study was conducted in four villages from two CD Blocks of the district. The district Birbhum is one of the backward districts of West Bengal and the economy is totally dependent on agriculture and allied activities. The regional disparity in terms of occupation, literacy rate, communication, availability of market and other facilities, soil fertility, irrigation facilities make a huge difference in the changing pattern of consumption expenditure incurred by the sample households. In this book I have tried to explain how a village is changing with time. How villagers became accustomed with the modern amenities and facilities and how they have been changing their livelihood. In some of the cases it is the impact of globalisation and in some of the cases the modern amenities entered in to the villages with their necessity - to run their livelihood properly. These changes even helped to change the rural economy. On the other hand there are some unchanged legacy already exist in the rural areas - like illiteracy, health indicators, gender inequality.

Regional imbalance is a ubiquitous phenomenon in both developed and developing economies. But in the latter it is more acute and glaring. It is being increasingly recognized, both on theoretical and empirical grounds, and experiences of the developing countries shows that at least in the initial stages of economic development, considerable regional imbalances in development arises. Reservation have, however, been expressed about the need to take deliberate policy measures to remove these increasing regional disparities in the levels of living. Regional disparity exists in agricultural development in Assam, North East India. The present study measures the extent of regional disparities in agricultural development in Assam and examines the factors responsible for them. This book may help researcher in social sciences to have an idea about regional disparities and to use appropriate tools to quantify such disparities. This book may also help policy-makers to adopt area specific agricultural development strategy so as to secure regional balance in agricultural development and boost up the pace of agricultural and economic development.

Measurement of agricultural development is complex phenomena, which is dependent on various factors. These factors are co-related with each other. Hence, all factors may be influenced due to change in any one factor. Composite index based on all selected agricultural and non-agricultural indicators is a pure number which is free from measuring unit. It gives unique figure which represents all selected indicators like arithmetic mean, one single figure represents entire data. The methodology suggested by Narian in (2007) of construction of composite index was used in this book. This is superior methodology as compare to methodology suggested by Central Statistical Organization of India. Researcher can measure agricultural growth on the basis of "AREA(A)", "PRODUCTION(P)", "PRODUCTIVITY(Y)", independently as well as integrated growth base on Area+Production+Productivity, simultaneously. Development is next step of growth. Agricultural development was measured based on agricultural+ non-agricultural indicators as non-agricultural indicators is having significant contribution in agricultural development. Relationship between crop and non-crop indicators was measured.

This is a case study on the use of the participatory research approach (PRA) by a Catholic development agency amongst the peasants in Zimbabwe. Similar agricultural projects in literature from other parts of the world were critically reviewed using six common concerns on the impact of PRA on rural development. The researcher, guided by a case study design, collected data through observation, interviews and focus groups over a period of a year. The results of this study showed that agricultural production of the projects had improved. But, like in the reviewed cases, there was not enough evidence to conclude that the improvement was due to the use of PRA. Evidence showed that PRA was being compromised in terms of the quality of farmers' participation, groups remaining informal in nature, underrating the liberating force of PRA, local and national structures remaining intact and non-fulfillment of requisites for planning non-formal education projects. It was recommended that application of PRA should use existing community strengths as the basic foundation of rural development.

Tanzania economy depends on agriculture as its main stay, but still rural farmers suffer from poor road transport and high cost of transport of products to markets. Problems in transport sector affect agricultural production in two ways. Firstly, the time and energy spent on transport related activities reduce labour productivity because the transport charges have led the price of fertilizers to be very high, hence reduces the profits which labour could get. Secondly, increased market costs as a result of inadequate and poorly maintained roads that are passed on to farmers in terms of low farm -gate price. In many food-growing areas, crops are carried in many kilometers by head to the assembly markets or roadsides. Despite the efforts made by the government concerning road transport, still there is inadequate agricultural production in rural areas. Because of this structure of human settlement and production, road transport system assumes an extraordinarily important role in the economic development of an area. The study evaluates the impact of road transport on agricultural production. It was conducted at Mikese, Kiroka, Kinole and Mkambarani wards located in Morogoro District.

Gomoa West District, a sub-national government structure in the Central Region of Ghana, was used as the social laboratory. The book shows that some districts in Ghana are financially under resourced and overly depend on central government transfers which is often erratic and fraught with managerial problems.Opportunities exists in such districts for expanding tax coverage and generating revenue locally. However some of the districts are faced with problems of revenue administration including logistics, personnel, low motivation and revenue leagues. Concerted effort is needed in areas of tax administration, capacity building, law enforcement and review of indicators in the formula for allocating the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF)to the districts in Ghana.Such review should be pro-poor based and geared towards addressing development gaps among the districts in Ghana, particularly development needs of resource-poor districts including the Gomoa West District. The book is recommended for everybody interested in local governments financing.

Poverty and unemployment are the main problems faced by the rural people of India. Due to illiteracy, small-sized holdings, natural disasters, unemployment, uncertainties, lack of warehouses and communication, prices received by the sample members are not reasonable which has adverse impact on income level. Education and technology are also not up to the mark and these have led to backwardness of the area. Credit is necessary in time and in adequate amount to stimulate the tempo of agricultural production. Money-lenders have been the most important source of credit because it is easily available from then and no complicated procedure is involved. Money-lenders charge high rate of interest and sometimes they even exploit the farmers for his service. To restrict exploitation of farmers by money-lenders, Government took some initiatives and thus, Lead Banks, Regional Rural Banks (RRBs) and Co-operative Banks were established. But those institutions did not cause sufficient benefit to the poorest of the poor, so the concept of formation of SHGs came into reality. The role of SHGs in rural development in West Bengal context is inevitable.

The term tourism has become popular to the common men since the second half of the last century. Nowadays, it is not regarded as a luxury activity performed only by those at the top of the income pyramid. The rapid economic development, standard of living and increased leisure time has made tourism the word of mouth in all sections of the society. Viewing this rapid flow of tourists, every country is now employing tourism as an instrument in rural economic development. But there is continuous dearth of academic literature on the role of tourism in rural development. This book will definitely fill this gap in the academic and corporate arena with its strong methods and analysis. It is also supplemental to the tourism planners and destination developers as it provides rich analysis of different aspects of tourism planning and geographical outlook of destination development.

Since 1990s to date, there has been a growing global interest among researchers in impact assessment of research and development (R&D). Attention has specifically been placed on the impact of R&D interventions on target beneficiaries. In this regard, this work, besides reviewing studies on impact assessment of agricultural research in Tanzania it documents the experience of Tanzanian farmers in the use of innovations by focusing on rice research-based innovations. Adaptation rather than adoption of innovations is evident in smallholder rice farming. Moreover, it sheds light on the limitation of the production-based reductionist approach in assessing the impact of research on food security. The economic costs and benefits of rice research in rain-fed agriculture in Tanzania are also presented. In general, this book should be of great interest to students in agricultural extension, rural sociology, agricultural economics, development studies as well as managers of agricultural research.

This thesis questions such generalisation by arguing that the realities of rural people are local, complex, diverse and dynamic. The study argues that social, environmental, political and cultural factors significantly affect the implementation of top-down policies on rural livelihoods.

Man's desire to communicate with his fellow men led to the development of language. This very desire led to the development of modern newspapers. There was always news, but etymology of the word is not exactly known. Their derivations can be given to news, in general. Firstly, what of new? Which became new’s and when the apostrophe was dropped became "news". Secondly, what ever information came from north, east, west and south was 'news'. Thirdly 'news' is the plural of new. Newspapers contain information about what is happening in one's country and other nations of the world. They tell the reader what is happening in their city, district, state and the world.

However, this could not be translated into significantly decreasing poverty- or unemployment rates. Due to a high population growth and large amounts of jobseekers every year, the economy is not able to create a corresponding number of jobs. Especially amongst young the unemployment remains high. Moreover, there seems to be a crucial mismatch between the demand of the labour market and the knowledge provided by the education sector. This work is based on a qualitative field study carried out in Ribáuè, a district located in Nampula province, in the northern part of Mozambique. It wants to shed further light on employment possibilities young people have and aims on fostering a vast image of their situation by examining sectors such as education, agriculture and politics.

Scientific Study from the year 2014 in the subject Economics - Case Scenarios, Wollega University (Department of Economics), language: English, abstract: This study has examined the impact of foreign aid on government expenditure in Ethiopia over the period 1981 to 2012 using Multivariate Vector Auto Regression analysis. All the necessary time series tests such as stationary test, co-integration, weak exiguity, and other tests are conducted. The empirical result from the long run fungibility equation result indicates that sectoral aid has negative effect on its sector spending in developmental sectors except for agricultural sector government spending. The estimate of agricultural aid also support that a 1percent increase in agricultural aid leads to a 0.83percent increase in agricultural spending. Aid other than health aid also has positive impact on health spending. The positive coefficient of aid other than the health implies that there is an aid diversion towards health sector from the others. The negative coefficients of sectoral aid on the sector spending and the negative coefficients of aid other than sector-specific aid, indicate diversion of aid away from the specific sector. Negative coefficients of explanatory variables may arise when there is a diversion of categorical aid from developmental investment towards non developmental expenditure such as general service government expenditures. The result also shows education aid is fungible both in short and long run. H...

We investigated the factors that influence mothers' use of medically trained services for childbirth in a rural district in the Eastern Region of Ghana using a cross-sectional study. Structured questionnaires were administered to 350 women with children under one year. Key informants who were community opinion leaders and Senior Midwives at health care facilities in the study district were also interviewed qualitatively. Cross tabulation and Chi-square test were the main statistical processes used in analysing the relationships between the study variables. The result showed that the use of antenatal services by the mothers was important for the choice of where to deliver their babies. Mothers who attended antenatal services three times or more were more likely to deliver at the health facilities than those who used lesser antenatal care. Delivery at a health facility was highest among the women who had the autonomy to decide where to deliver. Access factors in terms of economic cost and distance to a health facility also played significant roles in influencing mothers' delivery behavior. We recommend additional social policies to address maternal health issues in the study district
