Music in Early Childhood Anyone who has been in an early childhood classroom knows that music is an important part of children's lives. Music is not only a part of our culture; it has a biological effect on our minds. While researchers are still studying the specific effects of music on cognitive learning and brain activity, studies have shown that music does have a positive impact. Teachers of young children have an awesome responsibility as they unearth the potential of their students. Many teachers feel inept in teaching music because they believe that they do not sing well enough or do not have enough musical knowledge. This leads them to rely on taped music and to use music as a tool for transitions rather than a cognitive area taught for its own value. Teachers can impart musical concepts to children in developmentally appropriate ways. This book will give early childhood teachers the means to accomplish this goal. This guide will assist teachers as they develop and present developmentally appropriate activities that teach musical concepts.

Before the nineteenth century, instrumental music was considered inferior to vocal music. Kant described wordless music as "more pleasure than culture," and Rousseau dismissed it for its inability to convey concepts. But by the early 1800s, a dramatic shift was under way. Purely instrumental music was now being hailed as a means to knowledge and embraced precisely because of its independence from the limits of language. What had once been perceived as entertainment was heard increasingly as a vehicle of thought. Listening had become a way of knowing. Music as Thought traces the roots of this fundamental shift in attitudes toward listening in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Focusing on responses to the symphony in the age of Beethoven, Mark Evan Bonds draws on contemporary accounts and a range of sources--philosophical, literary, political, and musical--to reveal how this music was experienced by those who heard it first. Music as Thought is a fascinating reinterpretation of the causes and effects of a revolution in listening.

Jean-Jacques Nattiez, Carolyn Abbate Music and Discourse. Toward a Semiology of Music

5777 руб.
In this book Jean-Jacques Nattiez, well-known for his pioneering work in musical semiology, examines both music, and discourse about music, as products of human activity that are perceived in varying ways by various cultures. Asking such questions as "what is a musical work" and "what constitutes music," Nattiez draws from philosophy, anthropology, music analysis, and history to propose a global theory for the interpretation of specific pieces, the phenomenon of music, and the human behaviors that music elicits. He reviews issues raised by the notion of the musical sign, and shows how Peircian semiotics, with its image of a chain or web of meanings, applies to a consideration of music's infinite and unstable potential for embodying meaning. In exploring the process of ascribing meaning to music, Nattiez reviews writings on the psychology of music, non-Western metaphorical descriptions, music-analytical prose, and writings in the history of musical aesthetics. A final analytical chapter on the Tristan chord suggests that interpretations of music are cast in terms of analytical plots shaped by transcendent principles, and that any semiological consideration of music must account for these interpretive narratives.

Diplomarbeit aus dem Jahr 2000 im Fachbereich Pädagogik - Pädagogische Soziologie, Note: 1,0, Universität Wien (Erziehungswissenschaften), 137 Quellen im Literaturverzeichnis, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: ABSTRACT - This paper deals with experiences with music and socialization. It shows the influence of music on human development, especially in childhood and adolescence. A leading thesis of this paper is that with music everything works better. This question is answered by the reflections of situations in which music helps to a positive result. The functions of music, music as a background, relaxation with music, the coping with conflict situations, music as a social contact, help for self-realization, music and its symbol function, fun and pleasure with music, the annoyance and disturbance because of music and mutual dependence of music and society are specifically explained in this paper. Special attention relating to this lies in adolescence. The "new type of socialization" is set in combination with these functions. This new type shows the strong self-admiration of youth. A very important aspect of this paper is the development of identity, which supports the development of self and individuality. That is the reason, why a special interest lies in these aspects. Therefore the process of "Separation and Individuation" by MAHLER and the "Development of Identity" by ERIKSON, which explain the essential stages of development in childhood, are shown in ...

This book is about links between music and health. It focuses on music and public health, and, in particular, the potentially positive and negative effects of listening to and making music on the health of the general population. The book starts out by discussing the protection music offers against adverse effects of stress. It then discusses social aspects of music production and listening and examines religious music within the framework of social functioning. It offers insight into the physiological and psychological effects of music listening, the biological effects of singing, and the use of music in therapeutic situations and the rearing of children. The book concludes by discussing the significance of music for musicians and their health. Although it may seem that music has only good health effects, and therefore all professional musicians should be healthy, not all music effects are positive. The book describes situations in which music has negative health effects and makes clear that there is a pronounced difference between living with music for joy and to earn one´s living from making music. In the latter situation, performance anxiety may become a factor that affects health adversely.

What does a music therapist do when a client chooses not to engage using music? What does a music therapist do when a client engages in the therapeutic relationship, but self-elects to use other arts? How does a music therapist respond when allocated a multi-purpose room in a school setting, where various arts and play materials are on offer, in addition to musical instruments, and what are the expectations of the child client when the child associates the allocated room with 'play'? What if an educational professional refers a child to music therapy, but the child may not necessarily consider music as part of their recreational activities? As a music therapist, I have asked myself these questions because these became the reality of my working practice. Doctoral research explored the experiences and responses of adolescent clients in school settings using intermodal arts in music therapy with a music therapist. Further research examined the considerations of music therapists working in educational settings. This book follows the theories, practices and research of a music therapist who experienced changes in his profession in the post-global recession evolution of the field.

John Lennon "...a monumental achievement that has influenced every music documentary since" New Classics For most of its history, popular music has rarely been that which most people like. Jazz, for instance, has always been a minority interest. But in the era which was dominated by swing, the music and its popularity were equally matched. White musicians became bored with the asinine popular music they were expected to play, music pumped out by Tin Pan Alley, and tried to emulate the style and freedom of their black counterparts. Most of them were too intelligent as musicians to indulge in mere imitation. What they created was the first white music based on black music which was not stolen from black music.

Transcription of music and classification of audio and speech data are two important tasks in audio signal processing. Transcription of polyphonic music involves identifying the fundamental frequencies (pitches) of several notes played at a time. Its difficulty stems from the fact that harmonics of different tones tend to overlap, especially in western music. In this thesis, we introduce transcription and classification methods which are based on representation of the data in a meaningful manner. For transcription of polyphonic music we present an algorithm based on sparse representations in a structured dictionary, suitable for the spectra of music signals. For classification of audio data we propose to integrate into traditional classification methods a non-linear manifold learning technique, namely "diffusion maps". Finally, we examine empirically the performances of the proposed solutions.

Thèse de Bachelor de l'année 2011 dans le domaine Politique - Politique internationale - Sujet: Union européenne, note: 1, , langue: Français, résumé: The utility of music tends to be undervalued by states. To examine this topic, I focused on the potential for shared musical experiences to reinforce national identities and bolster intercultural dialogue. In exploring music policy, I looked at the consequences and dynamics of music's potential to unify people under political communities in the collective setting of festivals, particularly La Fête de la Musique in France. This project also examines two other important music festivals: European Music Day in Greece and The Varna Music Festival in Bulgaria. These cases illustrate the utility of national music festivals in reaching individuals at a personal level, especially when they emphasize individual creativity and participation; these interactive musical experiences can then be connected to a single, macrocosmic source where they are institutionalized. Moreover, music's unique ability to communicate ideas and emotions across linguistic barriers creates linkages that transcend the nation. I then took these analyses of national music festivals to the European level. Along with the potential replication of the benefits of national music festivals, a European music festival would be able to strengthen the idea of unity of diversity of citizens under the European Union. My project suggests that public music festivals c...

"A mighty achievement. Thank you." John Lennon "There's no shortage of ambition in this 17-episode series directed in 1977 for British TV by music journalist and filmmaker Tony Palmer. Subtitled "The Story of Popular Music," this is the closest we will ever get to a definitive portrait of such a sprawling topic." Sean Axmaker Jazz is not a black music, nor a white music. Nor is it structureless improvisation. Nor did it originate in New Orleans. As created at the turn of the century throughout the American south, it had a quite specific and limited meaning. Its form was strict, as were the morals and musical principles which guided its early exponents. This film will seek to examine the origins of jazz, and show how these were exploited and eventually lost by greed. Jazz is a story of apartheid in music in which a unique blend of white musical discipline and black sensibility was compromised and laid waste.

Like the movie Star Wars, the battles rage from episode to episode, with Bible verses being used as the proverbial light sabres to attack and defend each other. This book answers the questions amongst Christians and churches today in regard to ‘worship music’ and appropriate styles and genres. Gary Hartman The History of Texas Music

2602 руб.
The richly diverse ethnic heritage of the Lone Star State has brought to the Southwest a remarkable array of rhythms, instruments, and musical styles that have blended here in unique ways and, in turn, have helped shape the music of the nation and the world. Historian Gary Hartman writes knowingly and lovingly of the Lone Star State’s musical traditions. In the first thorough survey of the vast and complex cultural mosaic that has produced what we know today as “Texas music,” he paints a broad, panoramic view, offers analysis of the origins of and influences on specific genres, profiles key musicians, and provides guidance to additional sources for further information. A musician himself, Hartman draws on both academic and non-academic sources to give a more complete understanding of the state’s remarkable musical history and ethnic community studies with his first-hand knowledge of how important music is as a cultural medium through which human beings communicate information, ideas, emotions, values, and beliefs, and bond together as friends, families, and communities. The History of Texas Music incorporates a selection of well-chosen photographs of both prominent and less-well-known artists and describes not only the ethnic origins of much of Texas music but also the cross-pollination among various genres. Today, the music of Texas—which includes Native American music, gospel, blues, ragtime, swing, jazz, rhythm and blues, conjunto, Tejano, Cajun, zydeco, western swing, hon...

The Reinvention of Religious Music: Olivier Messiaen's Breakthrough Toward the Beyond

Present-day music studies conspicuously evade the question of religion in contemporary music. Although many composers address the issue in their work, as yet there have been few attempts to think through the structure of religious music as we hear it. On the basis of a careful analysis of Olivier Messiaen's work, this book argues for a renewal of our thinking about religious music. Addressing his notion of a "hyper-religious" music of sounds and colors, it aims to show that Messiaen has broken new ground. His reinvention of religious music makes us again aware of the fact that religious music, if taken in its proper radical sense, belongs to the foremost of musical adventures. The work of Olivier Messiaen is well known for its inclusion of religious themes and gestures. These alone, however, do not seem enough to account for the religious status of the work. Arguing for a "breakthrough toward the beyond" on the basis of the synaesthetic experience of music, Messiaen invites a confrontation with contemporary theologians and post-secular thinkers. How to account for a religious breakthrough that is produced by a work of art? Starting from an analysis of his 1960s oratorio La Transfiguration de Notre-Seigneur Jеsus-Christ, this book arranges a moderated dialogue between Messiaen and the music theology of Hans Urs von Balthasar, the phenomenology of revelation of Jean-Luc Marion, the rethinking of religion and technics in Jacques Derrida and Bernard Stiegler, and the Augustinian ...

Brand image research aims to discover the human characteristics attached to a brand. In this regard, the author suggests that as music can tell much of the personality of a person, then it would be possible to know the personality of a brand through music. The rationale behind is that music elicits "extramusical" information, such as emotions, values, dress codes and stereotypes of people; in relation to musical-genres.Purpose.This research aims to explore how music can help to produce brand knowledge. In particular how the extramusical information conveyed by musical-genres can be used as language to talk about the personality of a brand.Methodology.The empirical research was developed within an Interpretive research paradigm to learn from the perspective of consumers of hip-hop music in Sweden, how brand knowledge can be obtained from music as cognitive schema (CS).The data was gathered using a mixed-method research design. Incidental and Dance Music in the American Theatre from 1786 to 1923 constitutes the first three volumes of a critical survey of incidental and dance music arrangers in the American theatre: what they did and how they did it from the early days of the American musical theatre through the musicals of the millennium. Since no book currently exists that chronicles the art of arranging incidental and dance music in the American theatre, it is the aim of this text to fill an important gap in musical theatre scholarship in language that is easily accessible yet rich in descriptive analysis. In addition, since many successful dance music arrangers were also film composers, it is the hope that this book might appeal to a readership that extends beyond libraries, musical theatre aficionados and students. The first series, from 1786 through 1923 treats incidental and dance music through the emergence of jazz on the Broadway stage. Future series include Incidental and Dance Music in the American Theatre from 1924 (No, No, Nanette) to 1966 (Cabaret) and Incidental and Dance Music in the American Theatre from 1967 (Hair) to 2015 (Hamilton). Each three-volume series includes introductory essays, chronologies, biographical and critical commentaries, and musical examples drawn from published and manuscript sources.

In Music, Postcolonialism, and Gender, Leith Davis studies the construction of Irish national identity from the early eighteenth until the mid-nineteenth centuries, focusing in particular on how texts concerning Irish music, as well as the social settings within which those texts emerged, contributed to the imagining of Ireland as "the Land of Song." Through her considerations of Irish music collections by the Neals, Edward Bunting, and George Petrie; antiquarian tracts and translations by Joseph Cooper Walker, Charlotte Brooke, and James Hardiman; and lyrics and literary works by Sidney Owenson, Thomas Moore, Samuel Lover, and Dion Boucicault, Davis suggests that music served as an ideal means through which to address the ambiguous and ever-changing terms of the colonial relationship between Ireland and England.Davis also explores the gender issues so closely related to the discourses on both music and national identity during the time, and the influence of print culture and consumer capitalism on the representation of Irish music at home and abroad. She argues that the emergence of a mass market for culture reconfigured the gendered ambiguities already inherent in the discourses on Irish music and identity.Davis's book will appeal to scholars within Irish studies, postcolonial studies, gender studies, print culture, new British history, eighteenth- and nineteenth-century studies, and ethnomusicology.

Michael P. Steinberg Listening to Reason. Culture, Subjectivity, and Nineteenth-Century Music

This pathbreaking work reveals the pivotal role of music--musical works and musical culture--in debates about society, self, and culture that forged European modernity through the "long nineteenth century." Michael Steinberg argues that, from the late 1700s to the early 1900s, music not only reflected but also embodied modern subjectivity as it increasingly engaged and criticized old regimes of power, belief, and representation. His purview ranges from Mozart to Mahler, and from the sacred to the secular, including opera as well as symphonic and solo instrumental music. Defining subjectivity as the experience rather than the position of the "I," Steinberg argues that music's embodiment of subjectivity involved its apparent capacity to "listen" to itself, its past, its desires. Nineteenth-century music, in particular music from a north German Protestant sphere, inspired introspection in a way that the music and art of previous periods, notably the Catholic baroque with its emphasis on the visual, did not. The book analyzes musical subjectivity initially from Mozart through Mendelssohn, then seeks it, in its central chapter, in those aspects of Wagner that contradict his own ideological imperialism, before finally uncovering its survival in the post-Wagnerian recovery from musical and other ideologies. Engagingly written yet theoretically sophisticated, Listening to Reason represents a startlingly original corrective to cultural history's long-st...

Samuel Akpabot’s life tells a unique story of an incredible and fascinating journey encompassing over six decades. The life, music, and scholarly effervescence of Samuel Akpabot are indeed an epitome of intercultural musicology. The odyssey reveals a motion through a tri-cultural enclave in Africa, England, and the United States. The fundamental seed sown into the young Akpabot at King’s College and the Cathedral Church of Christ Choir, Lagos, ultimately blossomed into full Professorship at the University of Uyo and international stardom. His creative experience attests to the squirm that the first and second generation of Nigerian composers had to contend with to create indigenous African art music. Akpabot was a “Jack of all trade, and Master of ALL.” He was a classical and dance band pianist, organist, xylophonist, vibraphonist, trumpeter, drummer, composer, ethnomusicologist, African musicologist, intercultural musicologist, poet, Professor of music, conductor, broadcaster, and sports writer. Akpabot was a genius in all these areas and he dazzled the Nigerian and American students, audiences, congregations, sports enthusiasts, and colleagues, with his God given talents. A feisty scholar, his contribution to African musicology is indeed extensive and priceless. He covered every pertinent area in the study of African music—traditional music, popular dance music, church music, modern art music, and poetry. He exerted himself and was well-respected as an authority on African ...
