A fascinating account of a remarkable life that took the author, through hard work and determination, from rural England to the highest ranks of the United Nations Dame Margaret Anstee was born in the 1920s to a poor family in rural Essex. With the support of her parents and through her own determination, she graduated from Cambridge with first class honours, and entered the Foreign Office where she worked with the spy Donald Maclean shortly before his defection with Guy Burgess. Her career here ended as was customary at the time, when she married a diplomat and was posted to Singapore. As the marriage began to fail Margaret accepted a job at the United Nations in order to earn her fare back to England. It was the start of a career that was to push the boundaries at every step. She became the first woman to be posted to her beloved South America, where she drove through the Andes in her VW Beetle, she headed up the first Government think tank during Harold Wilson’s Government and she was the first woman to break the glass ceiling at the United Nations. Dame Margaret Anstee served the United Nations for four decades, both at the New York Headquarters and in some of the poorest countries of the world attempting to help the victims of war, poverty and natural disasters. Throughout this time Dame Margaret has worked relentlessly to overcome the inequalities between the developed and developing world, a battle that she considers essential for the survival of both worlds. The first and only woman ever to reach this powerful position within the United Nations. Exciting, insightful and, on occasion humorous, travel writing as the author journeys through South America, Africa and the Far East. Charming account of village life and that of a young academic in Cambridge in the 1930s and 1940s. Gives an insight into the workings of the United Nations and the challenges faced both in conflict resolution and health and education programs. Features lively and amusing anecdotes with a cast of characters that includes many of the world’s leaders, from Che Guevara to Margaret Thatcher as well as special appearances by MI6 and the CIA, set against a global backdrop. Praise for Never Learn to Type: «Her achievements are truly inspirational.» —The Rt Hon. Jack Straw MP, Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs «The preamble of the UN Charter announces the commitment… to… reaffirm the faith in the fundamental dignity and worth of the human person.... No one has lived for these principles more selflessly or diligently than Margaret Anstee. This publication is launched on the occasion of the Courts golden jubilee. In 12 chapters, with a foreword by His Excellency Mohammed Bedjaoui, President of the International Court of Justice, and with a wealth of illustrations, photographed by Bert and Lilian Mellink, it reviews the idea of the pacific settlement of disputes through the ages, culminating in the Hague Peace Conferences. It then deals with the genesis of the Court, from the days of its predecessor in the inter-war period and with the law and procedure of the International Court of Justice and its various legal and cultural components. Statistics, biographies of all the Judges and a full bibliography conclude this monumental tribute to a worldwide and time-honoured ideal.

2011 Reprint of 1920 Edition. Full facsimile of the original edition, not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. According to Paul Volcker, The Economic Consequences of Peace marked the entrance into the world scene of the twentieth century's most influential economist. It should be in the library of every serious student of world affairs. Keynes attended the Versailles Conference as a delegate of the British Treasury and argued for a much more generous peace. The book was a best seller throughout the world and was critical in establishing a general opinion that the Versailles Treaty was a vindictive and counter-productive peace settlement. The book also helped to consolidate American public opinion against the treaty and against involvement in the League of Nations. The perception by much of the British public that Germany had been treated unfairly in turn was a crucial factor in public support for appeasement. The success of the book established Keynes' reputation as a leading economist especially on the left. When Keynes was a key player in establishing the Bretton Woods system in 1944, he remembered the lessons from Versailles as well as the Great Depression. The Marshall Plan after Second World War is a similar system to that proposed by Keynes in The Economic Consequences of the Peace.

Jacques L. Koko PhD Facing Existential Contradictions. Self-Examination as a Tool for Peace and Happiness Volume 1

This book carefully tries to unravel the puzzle of existential contradictions and happiness. It reflects and translates piece by piece Surus practice of self-examination in the midst of existential contradictions. Throughout the lines of Surus adventures or stories, the book unveils the transformative potential of self-examination for peace and happiness. In Surus experience, the human journey to peace or happiness is a long one. Surus certainly remains a long and challenging one. Every time Suru thinks or feels like he has conquered peace or happiness for good, he ends up being wrong. He ends up losing his peace; his happiness escapes and challenges him to keep on running after the goal. And when he succeeds in catching up with it anew, peace dwells within his mind and heart for some time and escapes again. Suru keeps on longing for peace and happiness. His road to happiness is filled with contradictions, and his search for peace seems endless; it is like a lifetime journey. Every time the roadblocks of contradictions show up, they force the train of Surus journey to stop for a moment. Fortunately, self-examination transforms that stop into the opportunity of a much-needed station for the train of his existence. At that station, Suru pauses and takes the time to evaluate the direction of his existential movement to find his lost peace. In the midst of existential contradictions, it could be difficult to find peace. The path to peace could become nebulous. But with the tool o...

Ingo Steffgen A Sport for Development and Peace framework that facilitates moral development through liberal education and sport

Master's Thesis from the year 2013 in the subject Sport - Miscellaneous, grade: GPA 3.7, International University of Monaco, course: Sport for Development, language: English, abstract: The Western world commonly champions the power of sport for social cohesion and com-munal pride (Schulenkorf, 2011) through sporting mega events and small-scale development projects. Empirical evidence, however, that proof those claims are scarce (Chalip, 2006; Coalter, 2007; Kidd, 2008). Sport for good has received critics based on statistical proof that neither economical nor other social benefits reach the ones in need (Briedenhann, 2011). Even further most projects claiming to assist the United Nations Millennium Development Goals ( are poorly implemented and lack coordination with mainstream development activities (Tiessen, 2011). The complexity of conflicts and difficulty to transform those to achieve sustainable peace makes it impossible for sport as a single phenomenon to be detached from broader initiatives. Consequently, the document hereafter aims to combine theory and anecdotal evidence to suggest a Sport for Development and Peace framework (SDP) that is believed to be universal and leaves positive legacies be-hind. The suggested methodology utilizes the ideas of liberal education and the perks of sport to facilitate moral development.

As peace operations become the primary mechanism of conflict management used by the UN and regional organizations, understanding their problems and potential is essential for a more secure world. In this revised and updated second edition, Paul Diehl and Alexandru Balas provide a cutting-edge analysis of the central issues surrounding the development, operation, and effectiveness of peace operations. Among many features, the book: Traces the historical development of peace operations from their origins in the early 20th century through the development of modern peacebuilding missions and multiple simultaneous peace operations. Tracks changes over time in the size, mission and organization of peace operations. Analyses different organizational, financial, and troop provisions for peace operations, as well as assessing alternatives. Lays out criteria for evaluating peace operations and details the conditions under which such operations are successful. Drawing on a wide range of examples from those between Israel and her neighbours to more recent operations in Bosnia, Somalia, Darfur, East Timor, and the Congo, this new edition brings together the body of scholarly research on peace operations to address those concerns. It will be an indispensable guide for students, practitioners and general readers wanting to broaden their knowledge of the possibilities and limits of peace operations today.

Yannis A. Stivachtis, Strategic Studies Institute, U.S. Army War College The State-Society/Citizen Relationship in Security Analysis. Implications for Planning and Implementation of U.S. Intervention and Peace/State-building Operations

The United States is a global power with global interests and global responsibilities. The U.S. Army constitutes one of the means available to the United States to pursue and achieve its foreign policy goals. The end of the Cold War, and especially the events of September 11, 2001, have led to a redefinition of the U.S. Army's role. In this new environment, the purpose of the U.S. Army is not only to "win the war" but also to "win the peace." In this monograph, Dr. Yannis A. Stivachtis, an international security analyst who currently serves as Associate Professor of International and Strategic Studies at Virginia Tech, argues that due to the presence of several "weak" states in the international system, the United States needs to devise and employ strategies aimed at preventing and managing the outbreak of domestic conflicts that have the potential of undermining regional and international peace and stability.

A Land Full of God

A Land Full of God gives American Christians an opportunity to promote peace and justice in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. It shows them how to understand the enmity with brief, digestible, and comprehensive essays about the historical, political, religious, and geographical tensions that have led to many of the dynamics we see today. All the while, A Land Full of God walks readers through a biblical perspective of God's heart for Israel and the historic suffering of the Jewish people, while also remaining sensitive to the experience and suffering of Palestinians. The prevailing wave of Christian voices are seeking a pro-Israeli, pro-Palestinian, pro-peace, pro-justice, pro-poor, and ultimately pro-Jesus approach to bring resolution to the conflict.""If you care about peace and justice in the land where Jesus lived and died, then read this excellent collection of thoughtful, probing essays from a wide range of viewpoints. The writers are scholars, pastors, activists, theologians, all struggling--from their vigorously different perspectives!--to be faithful to the Prince of Peace. A good read that will leave you much better equipped to understand all sides and therefore work more effectively for just reconciliation in the Holy Land.""--Ron Sider, President emeritus, Evangelicals for Social ActionRev. Fachbuch aus dem Jahr 2013 im Fachbereich Pädagogik - Der Lehrer / Pädagoge, , Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: The worldwide peace demonstrations with millions of participants around the turn of millennium show the desire of a large part of humanity for peace. The activity of hundreds of thousands of young people for peace in Germany is a new phenomenon that can be interpreted in part as a result of decades of peace education in parental homes , kindergartens , schools and colleges. There are voices that recognize Europe as a phalanx , as the spearhead of global peace. It seems to have been an increase in empathy, which also led to the abolition of slavery , to strengthen women 's and children's rights, democracy and the welfare state. The peoples of Europe , including Germany , France, Spain, England, Austria and Russia, which for centuries had war against each other have now met the peace for 65 years . For Steven PINKER war and violence in politics and society overall are on the decline. Never before in the history of mankind violence, murder and war have played such a small role as in our present. Reimering Stefan The United Nations Security Council and the Darfur Conflict

After at least 800.000 Tutsi and moderate Hutu had been killed in the Rwandan genocide, while the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) failed to fulfill its duty as primary body "for the maintenance of international peace and security", the international community reacted with the development of the concept of Responsibility to Protect (R2P). It challenges the traditionally strong position of state sovereignty in international affairs, by including an obligation for each state to fulfill its primary responsibility as sovereign state, which is to protect their citizens. Parallel to the theoretical discussions, the first test-case for the concept of R2P emerged in Sudan's western region Darfur. Civil war broke out in Darfur in April 2003, and has cost more than 300,000 lives, and almost three million people have been displaced. Once again the UNSC was not able to prevent mass atrocities against civilians. This book answers the question, why the UNSC failed in its task and what needs to be done for being able to fulfill its duty as international peace keeper in the future.

Wilfried Hein, Wilfried Hein A Witness in Times of War and Peace. The story of Gerhard Hein, a Mennonite Pastor who served in the Wehrmacht During World War II

A Witness in Times of War and Peace is a searing memoir that describes the struggles a Mennonite pastor experiences during the Second World War. Gerhard Hein is a practicing Mennonite when he is called up for duty, and he must reconcile his pacifist beliefs with the obligation to serve in Germany's Wehrmacht. He displays courage in a terrifying and uncertain time by voicing his concerns about the National Socialistic ideology in both words and deeds, standing up for his beliefs by pointing to the One who can bring real peace. His story shows that in the darkness of war, rays of genuine love, care, and compassion can shine through....

Joseph R. Na a. Ez, Strategic Studies Institute A 21st Century Security Architecture for the Americas. Multilateral Cooperation, Liberal Peace, and Soft Power

This monograph by Colonel Joseph R. Núñez is a constructive response to the question of "How can the United States best develop security cooperation within the Americas?" In it, he develops the necessary background to make the persuasive argument that it is time for the United States to employ strategic restraint and reassurance of allies to develop a new security architecture that is effective and efficient, not to mention reflecting of our values and interests. The current security architecture of the Western Hemisphere needs major change. To better address current and future threats, the United States must be able to demonstrate the type of leadership that reflects the "soft power" and liberal peace realities of our hemispheric neighborhood. Of course, this will require the recognition and assistance of other leading states that provide real legitimacy and better representation for this new security structure.

U.S. Army War College, Strategic Studies Institute, Gary J. Schmitt A Hard Look at Hard Power. Assessing The Defense Capabilities of Key U.S. Allies and Security Partners

Since the end of World War II, the United States has made maintaining a favorable balance of power in Eurasia a core element of its national security strategy. It did so in good measure by maintaining a large conventional military force that was based not only at home, but also in bases spread across Europe and Asia. That strategy was buttressed by developing security ties and alliances with key powers and front-line states. The implicit bargain was that the United States would help keep the peace on their door front if they would provide access from which American forces could operate and, in turn, maintain credible forces themselves to reinforce and support U.S. efforts at keeping the great power peace.

A volume in Peace EducationSeries Editors Jing Lin, University of Maryland, Edward Brantmeier, James Madison University, and Ian Harris, University of Wisconsin, MilwaukeePractice and research of peace education has grown in the recent years as shown by a steadily increasing number ofpublications, programs, events, and funding mechanisms. The oft-cited point of departure for the peace educationcommunity is the belief in education as a valuable tool for decreasing the use of violence in conflict and for buildingcultures of positive peace hallmarked by just and equitable structures. Educators and organizations implementing peaceeducation activities and programming, however, often lack the tools and capacities for evaluation and thus pay scantregard to this aspect in program management. Reasons for this inattention are related to the perceived urgency toprioritize new and more action in the context of scarce financial and human resources, notwithstanding violence orconflict; the lack of skills and time to indulge in a thorough evaluative strategy; and the absence of institutional incentivesand support. Evaluation is often demand-driven by donors who emphasize accounting given the current context ofinternational development assistance and budget cuts. Program evaluation is considered an added burden to already over-tasked programmers who are unaware of theincentives and assessment techniques. Peace education practitioners are typically faced with forcing evaluation frameworks, tec...
