Using qualitative research, this book investigates resiliency development in secondary school communities. The five participants in this research were all recently-graduated secondary school students who self-identified as “at-risk/resilient” and completed one-on-one interviews. The purpose of these interviews was to use graduate voices to identify how secondary schools are, or could be, promoting resiliency development. Emergent themes included the importance of a positive school culture, how one person can make a difference, and the importance of healthy social relationships. Educational stakeholders need to “understand” risk and resiliency, meaning showing compassion and empathy, having knowledge of at-risk backgrounds, recognizing the need for extrinsic resiliency supports, and acknowledging that resiliency is intrinsically individual. This research is one step towards creating an educational atmosphere that nurtures resiliency in all our “at-risk” youth.

This thesis examines the types of food within the National School Lunch Program that is provided to elementary school aged children in The United States of America and the link that these foods have to contributing to childhood obesity rates. Further explored are the physical education practices that these children participate in daily or weekly during the school day. An additional component to this thesis are the personal food consumption choices that these children make at home. The research participants were compared by ethnic groups which enabled the researcher to compile data that mirrored the obesity rates and trends provided in current data. There were many elements that lead to the conclusions of this research study. One factor that compromised the findings were the sample size as well as the lunch choices each individual made during the school week. Another element was that the research participants participated in physical activity on a daily basis at school and home.

Editors Alexander C. Wagenaar and Scott Burris outline integrated theory drawn from numerous disciplines in the social and behavioral sciences; specific mechanisms of legal effect and guidelines for collecting and coding empirical datasets of statutory and case law; optimal research designs for randomized trials and natural experiments for public health law evaluation; and methods for qualitative and cost-benefit studies of law.. They also discuss the challenge of effectively translating the results of scientific evaluations into public health laws and highlight the impact of this growing field. “How exactly the law can best be used as a tool for protecting and enhancing the public’s health has long been the subject of solely opinion and anecdote. Enter Public Health Law Research, a discipline designed to bring the bright light of science to the relationships between law and health. This book is a giant step forward in illuminating that subject.” – Stephen Teret, JD, MPH, Professor, Director, Center for Law and the Public's Health, Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health “Wagenaar and Burris bring a dose of much needed rigor to the empirical study of which public health law interventions really matter, and which don’t.” – Bernard S. The existence of regional inequalities in health care services is a common phenomenon at global level. Efforts are made to reduce the regional inequalities by promoting equitable access to primary health care (PHC) services and facilities. This study explores the inter-district variation in primary health care services and development in Balochistan. The study uses a set of twelve (12) PHC related indicators, out of them ten (10) are related to curative health care and two (2) indicators are selected covering the curative aspect of primary health care. By using 0-1 transformation value technique, the composite indexes are calculated for curative and preventive health care services. Districts are ranked as under developed, moderately developed, developed and less developed. There are found sharp inter-district variations in curative as well as preventive health care services in Balochistan. In order to promote the primary health care services in Balochistan the proposed recommendations include ensuring equitable provision of health professionals particularly in terms of female doctors, and decentralization of tertiary care services in order to promote primary health care services.

Seventy percent of the global burden of mental disorders is located in low and middle income countries (LMIC),including sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). However, in Africa, only 0.62% of the national health budget is allocated to mental health compared to a global median of 2.8% and 5% in Europe. The government is the source of funding in 62%of patients with severe mental disorder in the World Health Organisation (WHO), Africa Region, the lowest of all the WHO regions, and lower compared to a global median of 79%. This is compounded by poor resources, with mental health outpatient facilities in WHO Africa Region being less that 10% of the global median. To address these problems, the WHO launched its Mental Health Action Gap Programme (mhGAP) in 2008, to scale-up mental health services in low and middle income countries (LMIC). The book is directed to all policy makers in sub-Saharan Africa to aid decision making about the urgent need for sustainable and relevant mental health care strategies, and the important areas that need priority. The book should be helpful to local and international researchers in formulating research questions relevant to the African continent and it will be of interest to medical practitioners and students in the region as adjunct to standard text books.

Although previous research highlights the importance of both supportive relationships and depressive symptoms in predicting a variety of physical health outcomes in this population, less is understood about how these variables relate to one another. Therefore, the purpose of this book is to provide an examination of this question. Results of the current work suggest that depressive symptoms are a pathway through which supportive relationships may influence physical functioning. This study adds to the growing body of research that has started examining the mechanisms through which supportive relationships influence physical health and should be especially useful to individuals in the fields of cardiovascular behavioral medicine and social-health psychology.

Current research illustrates that some schools, often referred to as high-performing, high-poverty schools, have led their low-income populations to high levels of achievement (Ambrose, 2008). Hypothesizing that some schools were doing quite well with students from low-income families, the director for the Center for Urban Studies at Harvard University, Ronald Edmonds and other researchers looked at achievement data from schools in major cities around the country where student populations were from high-poverty areas. During the 1980s a list was developed that identified common characteristics that were present in effective schools. These traits became known as the Correlates of Effective Schools. These correlates appeared repeatedly in high-performing schools, despite the schools' socioeconomic levels (Lezotte, 1991). Research regarding high-poverty, high-performing elementary schools specifically located in South Carolina is limited. The purpose of this research was to learn how principals of high-poverty, high-performing elementary schools in South Carolina promote high levels of student achievement.
