This book undertakes a critical analysis of some central problems in Hegel scholarship. It is concerned with clarifying the theoretical underpinnings of paradox, the possible relationship of paradox to a dialectic logic, and the possibilities of systematization of dialectic and/or paradox. The author begins with a discussion of current attitudes toward paradox in mathematics, science, and logic, and then moves gradually toward a differentiation of philosophical paradox in the strict sense from literary, religious, and logic paradox. The relationship of dialect to paradox is elucidated by means of a phenomenological analysis of self-consciousness. Finally, possible approaches to the systematization of dialectic are considered. Analyzing and evaluating Hegel's dialectical-paradoxical system in particular, Dr. Kainz also addresses the question of viable alternatives to Hegel's approach. While paradox is generally considered by philosophers and logicians as something to be avoided, Kainz's study investigates the possibility that it is an important and even indispensable element of constructive thinking in philosophy as well as other disciplines. Paradox, Dialect, and System is this a contribution not only to Hegel scholarship but to philosophy itself. It will be of particular interest to this concerned with the differentiation of dialectical and nondialectical philosophical systems and with the prevalence of paradox in literature, religion, and contemporary physics.

Philosophy of Love is one of many courses offered at LaGuardia Community College (CUNY) in the Philosophy and Critical Thinking Program. The journal is a collection of student work inspired by the readings and discussions from HUP 215 during the Spring 2017 semester. Inside you will find each student's final paper, along with a critical review and a response from the author. The format reflects the dialectical process that we embarked on during class discussions "up and down" the ladder of love. The ascent is a challenging struggle. The dialectic continues motivated by a love for wisdom, self, and others chiseling away as we sculpt our characters in the pursuit of the good life.

Debates over postmodernism, analyses of knowledge and power, and the recurring issue of Heidegger's Nazism have all deepened questions about the relation between philosophy and the social roles of intellectuals. Against such postmodernist rejections of philosophical theory as mounted by Rorty and Lyotard, Richard Peterson argues that precisely reflection on rationality, in appropriate social terms, is needed to confront urgent political issues about intellectuals. After presenting a conception of intellectual mediation set within the modern division of labor, he offers an account of postmodern politics within which postmodern arguments against critical reflection are themselves treated socially and politically.Engaging thinkers as diverse as Kant, Hegel, Marx, Habermas, Foucault, and Bahktin, Peterson argues that a democratic conception and practice of philosophy is inseparable from democracy generally. His arguments about modern philosophy are tied to claims about the relation between liberalism and epistemology, and these in turn inform an account of impasses confronting contemporary politics. Historical arguments about the connections between postmodernist thought and practice are illustrated by discussions of the postmodernist dimensions of recent politics.

Theodor Adorno’s reputation as a cultural critic has been well-established for some time, but his status as a philosopher remains unclear. In Adorno and the Ends of Philosophy Andrew Bowie seeks to establish what Adorno can contribute to philosophy today. Adorno’s published texts are notably difficult and have tended to hinder his reception by a broad philosophical audience. His main influence as a philosopher when he was alive was, though, often based on his very lucid public lectures. Drawing on these lectures, both published and unpublished, Bowie argues that important recent interpretations of Hegel, and related developments in pragmatism, echo key ideas in Adorno’s thought. At the same time, Adorno’s insistence that philosophy should make the Holocaust central to the assessment of modern rationality suggests ways in which these approaches should be complemented by his preparedness to confront some of the most disturbing aspects of modern history. What emerges is a remarkably clear and engaging re-interpretation of Adorno’s thought, as well as an illuminating and original review of the state of contemporary philosophy. Adorno and the Ends of Philosophy will be indispensable to students of Adorno’s work at all levels. This compelling book is also set to ignite debate surrounding the reception of Adorno’s philosophy and bring him into the mainstream of philosophical debate at a time when the divisions between analytical and European philosophy are increasingly breaking down.

Life and Action: Elementary Structures of Practice and Practical Thought

Any sound practical philosophy must be clear on practical concepts - concepts, in particular, of life, action, and practice. This clarity is Michael Thompson's aim in his ambitious work. In Thompson's view, failure to comprehend the structures of thought and judgment expressed in these concepts has disfigured modern moral philosophy, rendering it incapable of addressing the larger questions that should be its focus. In three investigations, Thompson considers life, action, and practice successively, attempting to exhibit these interrelated concepts as pure categories of thought, and to show how a proper exposition of them must be Aristotelian in character. He contends that the pure character of these categories, and the Aristotelian forms of reflection necessary to grasp them, are systematically obscured by modern theoretical philosophy, which thus blocks the way to the renewal of practical philosophy. His work recovers the possibility, within the tradition of analytic philosophy, of hazarding powerful generalities, and of focusing on the larger issues - like "life" - that have the power to revive philosophy. As an attempt to relocate crucial concepts from moral philosophy and the theory of action into what might be called the metaphysics of life, this original work promises to reconfigure a whole sector of philosophy. It is a work that any student of contemporary philosophy must grapple with.

Adorno’s lectures on ontology and dialectics from 1960–61 comprise his most sustained and systematic analysis of Heidegger’s philosophy. They also represent a continuation of a project that he shared with Walter Benjamin – ‘to demolish Heidegger’. Following the publication of the latter’s magnum opus Being and Time, and long before his notorious endorsement of Nazism at Freiburg University, both Adorno and Benjamin had already rejected Heidegger’s fundamental ontology. After his return to Germany from his exile in the United States, Adorno became Heidegger’s principal intellectual adversary, engaging more intensively with his work than with that of any other contemporary philosopher. Adorno regarded Heidegger as an extremely limited thinker and for that reason all the more dangerous. In these lectures, he highlights Heidegger’s increasing fixation with the concept of ontology to show that the doctrine of being can only truly be understood through a process of dialectical thinking. Rather than exploiting overt political denunciation, Adorno deftly highlights the connections between Heidegger’s philosophy and his political views and, in doing so, offers an alternative plea for enlightenment and rationality. These seminal lectures, in which Adorno dissects the thought of one of the most influential twentieth-century philosophers, will appeal to students and scholars in philosophy and critical theory and throughout the humanities and social sciences.

In this, his first book, Matthew Giobbi takes the reader from the earliest days of the experimental psychology movement, continues through the media manufacturing of the social "need for psychology," and brings us to the current political and economic power structure of American psychology. ------As a critical theorist, Giobbi draws the reader's attention to the unconscious motivations of both the psychologist and the experimental psychology movement itself. He then introduces a way forward through Heidegger and presents a psychological ontology which asks the reader to reconsider what psychology and human Being really are. ------"From an upstart position to a restart opportunity, Giobbi argues for and provides a well-documented background check on the modern paradigm of cognitive psychology--with all of its scientistic and positivistic presumptions. Systematically, yet paralogically, Giobbi turns his readers toward seeing what still remains concealed and hidden in modernist thinking: namely, the "sadomasochistic event" of mind-body split, master-slave relations, and subject-object dualisms. Giobbi prescribes a post-cognitive psychology of unconcealedness by way of a Heideggerian philosophy of Dasein."-Victor J. Vitanza, Professor of Rhetoric and Philosophy, EGS

GWF Hegel has long been considered one of the most influential and controversial thinkers of the nineteenth century, and his work continues to provoke debate in contemporary philosophy. This new book provides readers with an accessible introduction to Hegel’s thought, offering a lucid and highly readable account of his Phenomenology of Spirit, Science of Logic, Philosophy of Nature, Philosophy of History, and Philosophy of Right. It provides a cogent and careful analysis of Hegel’s main arguments, considers critical responses, evaluates competing interpretations, and assesses the legacy of Hegel’s work for philosophy in the present day. In a comprehensive discussion of the major works, J.M Fritzman considers crucial questions of authorial intent raised by the Phenomenology of Spirit, and discusses Hegel’s conceptions of necessity and of philosophical method. In his presentation of Hegel’s Logic, Fritzman evaluates the claim that logic has no presuppositions and examines whether this endorses a foundationalist or coherentist epistemology. Fritzman goes on to scrutinize Hegel’s claims that history represents the progressive realization of human freedom, and details how Hegel believes that this is also expressed in art and religion. This book serves as both an excellent introduction to Hegel’s wide-ranging philosophy for students, as well as an innovative critique which will contribute to ongoing debates in the field.

It is difficult to approach a question on the negativity of Nietzsche's philosophy without a degree of prejudice. Nietzsche, considerably more than most philosophers, has permeated Western popular culture to the extent that his name entails specific, negative connotations even to the layman. Although, this is perhaps in part due to an unfair association with Hitler, claims that Nietzsche promotes an inherently negative philosophy are present even in academic treatments. It is among such academics that the most serious accusation against Nietzsche arises; namely that of Nietzsche being a nihilist. While accusations related to Nazism can relatively easily be refuted, other accusations are not quite as unfounded: Nietzsche encouraged strength and power; he called himself an "immoralist"; he rejected democracy and human equality; he promoted the notion of an "Übermensch"; and he did encourage nihilism. The author discusses these negative associations in terms of Nietzsche's philosophy. He exposes this common fallacy by interpreting the various elements of Nietzsche's ethics in the context of his philosophy as a whole.

Thesis (M.A.) from the year 2011 in the subject Philosophy - Philosophy of the 19th Century, grade: 1st Class (80%), Durham University, course: Philosophy and Psychology, language: English, abstract: Nietzsche, considerably more than most other philosophers, has permeated Western popular culture to the extent that most people will have heard his name and even harbour certain connotations with it. Given the manner in which Nietzsche is most often portrayed in popular culture, it is unsurprising that these connotations are predominantly negative. "Conan the Barbarian", for example, opens with Nietzsche's line, "What does not kill us, makes us stronger," indicating a certain encouragement of brutish barbarianism. Moreover however, Nietzsche's philosophy is associated with cruelty in Polanski's "Death and the Maiden", in which Dr.Miranda, who tortured and raped political prisoners, is recognised for his tendency to quote Nietzsche. Perhaps Nietzsche's most widespread association, is however with Hitler.I argue that these negative associations are not only inaccurate, but in fact quite ironically opposite to the philosophy that Nietzsche actually promoted. While accusations related to Nazism can relatively easily be refuted, accusations of brutishness, elitism and immorality are not entirely unfounded: Nietzsche encouraged strength and power; called himself an "immoralist"; rejected democracy and human equality, and promoted the noti...

What does the study of Plato’s dialogues tell us about the modern meaning of ‘sex’? How can recent developments in the philosophy of sex and gender help us read these ancient texts anew? Plato and Sex addresses these questions for the first time. Each chapter demonstrates how the modern reception of Plato’s works Ð in both mainstream and feminist philosophy and psychoanalytical theory Ð has presupposed a ‘natural-biological’ conception of what sex might mean. Through a critical comparison between our current understanding of sex and Plato’s notion of genos, Plato and Sex puts this presupposition into question. With its groundbreaking interpretations of the Republic, the Symposium and the Timaeus, this book opens up a new approach to sex as a philosophical concept. Including critical readings of the theories of sex and sexuation in Freud and Lacan, and relating such theories to Plato’s writings, Plato and Sex both questions our assumptions about sex and explains how those assumptions have coloured our understanding of Plato. What results is not only an original reading of some of the most prominent aspects of Plato’s philosophy, but a new attempt to think through the meaning of sex today.

Alain Badiou is one of the leading philosophers in the world today. His ground-breaking philosophy is based on a creative reading of set theory, offering a new understanding of what it means to be human by promoting an 'intelligence of change'. Badiou's philosophical system makes our capacity for revolution and novelty central to who we are, and develops an ethical position that aims to make us less anxious about this very capacity. This book presents a comprehensive and engaging account of Badiou's philosophy, including an in-depth discussion of The Theory of the Subject, Being and Event and Logics of Worlds. In a clear and careful analysis, Ed Pluth considers exactly how Badiou's theoretical 'anti-humanism' is linked up to what is, for all intents and purposes, a practical humanism. Central to this is an account of Badiou’s theory of the subject, and his attempt to develop an 'ethic of truths'. The role of set theory, Marxism, and Lacanian psychoanalysis in Badiou's philosophy is also given close attention. This book will be of interest to students and scholars of philosophy, as well as to all those keen to develop a critical understanding of one of the most controversial and important thinkers of the twentieth century.

Diplomarbeit aus dem Jahr 2005 im Fachbereich Kulturwissenschaften - Allgemeines und Begriffe, Note: 2.0999999, Europa-Universität Viadrina Frankfurt (Oder), Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: (Diese Diplomarbeit ist auf deutsch)AbstractThree terms: freedom, democracy and constitutional state have a great meaning in modern political discussions and the ideas represented by them form an interrelated complex. Nowadays there is no possibility to lead political discussion without referring, at least nearly, to the intrinsic meaning of such terms. The subject and the relationships between freedom, democracy and constitutional state will be critical examined in this paper, which has three chapters corresponding to these main terms. Diverse topics that stand in manifold relations are discussed in every chapter. The arrangement of this paper should be seen first of all as a structural help, because of the fact that the terms imply and determinate each other. This complexity of freedom, democracy and constitutional state means also that a separate consideration of one of these terms can not be sufficient, because many aspects are context-related. The analysis focuses on critical scrutiny. This paper takes into consideration possible negative consequences if the freedom, democracy and constitutional state are not implemented simultaneously into a policy. Generally it is attempted to show that the development of a state can take unintended and questionable course if the importance and compleme...

Donald Phillip Verene The Philosophy of Literature

The Philosophy of Literature: Four Studies puts forth the question of the extent to which philosophers must go to school with the poets. It begins with a new interpretation of the famous Platonic quarrel with the poetic wisdom of Homer. It brings this question forward through the humanism of thinkers of the Italian Renaissance and the German Idealism of Hegel. It then treats the relation of philosophy and literature in four ways by considering philosophy as literature, philosophy of literature, philosophy in literature, and philosophy and literature. In regard to the first of these, it discusses Jorge Luis Borges's The Immortal, to the second James Joyce's Finnegans Wake, to the third Carl Sandburg's epic prose poem The People, Yes, and to the fourth, Sebastian Brant's Ship of Fools. This work demonstrates that in an area of thought often dominated by fashionable doctrines of literary interpretation, the great works of literature and philosophy remain as permanent residents of our thought and imagination.""This little book conveys fresh, major insights about the possible relations between literature and philosophy--between real things and ideas--and the common medium we use to express and explore them both, language. Verene beautifully exemplifies these multiple relations by examining four specific literary works (Borges, Joyce, Sandburg, Brant) through a sophisticated but accessible philosophical lens. A lucid, foundational treatment that will enlight...

Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2003 in the subject Philosophy - General Essays, Eras, Obafemi Awolowo University (Faculty of Arts), course: Philosophy, language: English, abstract: This thesis is a critical study of the traditional mind-body problem from the perspective of the Yoruba (African) concept of a person. The thesis attempted to see a plausible Yoruba response to the mind-body problem vis-à-vis the problem of defining a person. The methods of inquiry are those of critical exposition, conceptual clarification and analytical evaluation. The research involved consultation and analysis of existing inter-disciplinary literature on the Philosophy of Mind; a critical study of relevant published Ifa Literary Corpus; and discussion sessions with practitioners of Ifá and other genres of Yoruba folktales, as well as Yoruba-speaking individuals on their ideas of the Yoruba concept of a person. The specific objectives are to critically outline the nature of the mind-body problem, analytically present what may be regarded as a plausible account of the Yoruba concept of a person, see whether the mind-body problem arises for the Yoruba concept of a person, do a comparative study of contemporary scientific concepts of a person and the Yoruba concept of a person and finally, to do a philosophical appraisal of the Yoruba concept of a person vis-à-vis its response to the mind-body problem, and the implication of that concept of a person for social existence. This book analyses the impact of learning behaviour in different economic environments. All cases are motivated by real world puzzles which cannot be explained by models with rational expectations: The size and persistence of exchange rate volatility, the possibility of financial market crashes without news, and progress in disinflation in transition countries despite limited credibility and conflicting monetary and fiscal policies. In particular, the author shows that adaptive learning behaviour adds additional dynamics to economic models, which are not present under the assumption of full rationality. Certain types of hysteresis in financial markets can be explained by relaxing the rational expectations assumption; credibility and transparency of economic policies matter even more when agents learn about their economic environment; and markets with incomplete and asymmetric information are inherently unstable and prone for market crashes.

Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2009 in the subject Psychology - Cognition, grade: magna cum laude, University of Göttingen (Institute for Nonlinear Dynamics), language: English, abstract: Selective attention enables goal-directed behavior despite the permanent, immense input to the sensory system. Contradicting early speculations of an active attending and passive ignoring, the active nature of ignoring was revealed by the negative priming paradigm. The present thesis will describe our multi-level approach to reveal the temporal structure of negative priming. Accompanied by computational modeling, we run sophisticated psychological experiments and record and analyze EEG data. The common denominator of all negative priming paradigms is the simultaneous presentation of targets that have to be attended to, and distractors that are to be ignored. A slowdown in the response to a formerly ignored stimulus is labeled negative priming. Because of negative priming being robust and sensitive at the same time, a variety of different theoretical accounts have been developed. But until now none of the theoretical accounts is able to explain all aspects of the negative priming effect. In order to clarify the situation, the time course of negative priming is crucial. In order to advance the debate on theoretical accounts, we build a computational model comprising most of the mechanisms suspected to play a role in negative priming tasks. The outcome is not only a meta-model for ...

Jean-Luc Nancy stands as one of the great French theorists of «deconstruction.» His writings on philosophy, politics, aesthetics, and religion have significantly contributed to the development of contemporary French thought and helped shape and transform the field of continental philosophy. Through Nancy's immense oeuvre, which covers a wide range of topics such as community, freedom, existence, sense/ touch, democracy, Christianity, the visual arts and music, and writing itself, we have learned to take stock of the world in a more nuanced fashion. In this collection, contemporaries of Nancy and eminent scholars of continental philosophy, including Giorgio Agamben, Étienne Balibar, Ginette Michaud, Georges Van Den Abbeele, Gregg Lambert and Ian James, have been invited to reflect on the force of Nancy's «deconstruction» and how it has affected, or will affect, the ways we approach many of the most pertinent topics in contemporary philosophy. The collection also includes Jean-Luc Nancy's previously unpublished 'Dialogue Beneath the Ribs', where he reflects, twenty years after, on his heart transplant. Nancy Now will be of critical interest not only to scholars working on or with Nancy's philosophy, but also to those interested in the development and future of French thought.

Ecological Metapolitics, for the first time, attempts to realize a synthesis between the problem of ecology and some fundamental concepts of Alain Badiou's proper philosophy. Ecology cannot be the first problem. Drawing from Badiou's work in Ethics, Metapolitics, Manifesto for Philosophy, Being and Event and others, Ecological Metapolitics attempts to consider the possibility of a new, modern tradition emanating from the Event, in light of the ecological question today. The book considers death, mourning, democratic materialism, the passion for the real, resistance and technological fixes such as geo-engineering. Ecological Metapolitics ultimately serves as a critique of environmental ethics, argued through Badiou's philosophical work.

Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche (1844-1900) has exerted a decisive and radical influence on the central themes of twentieth-century philosophy, art and literature. This volume collects together for the very first time a record of the key readings which comprise the three principal traditions or methodologies of Nietzsche interpretation: the Anglo-American, German and French traditions. In so doing, the volume provides a vital record of and guide to the central elements of Nietzsche scholarship, and encourages an appreciation of the divergences and similarities which both separate and unify these interpretations of Nietzsche's work.
