The 9/11 terror attacks sparked a war where the United States of America began to occupy Afghanistan. Ten years later, the U.S. is still in the Middle East, and I pose the question: Why is the U.S. still there- according to Americans- and how is the public influenced from the media it consumes? This thesis covers relative topics of an anthropological nature like the global influence of American mass media as well as current media anthropology discussions. Interviews have been conducted strictly with Hoosiers from the state of Indiana. I underline how mass media influences the American public’s opinion of the war. The methodology is based on media theory from George Marcus and his notion of multi-sited research. The theory is primarily centered upon Edward Said’s Orientalism, where such concepts as “Othering” and hegemony are often mentioned to describe the behavior of U.S. citizens. The research is analyzed utilizing Philipp Mayring’s method of qualitative content analysis. Lastly, I propose a new concept of how the United States reacts to a crisis and offer people a way to gain a better understanding of the conflict outside the realm of prominent American media outlets.

The agriculture sector in many developing countries in Asia, especially in Pakistan, is very important because agriculture is the most effective and only viable sector to generate economic growth and to feed 170 million populations. However, the agricultural extension services in Pakistan have not been very effective due to unavailability of agricultural information at proper time. This study was judged among socio-economic characteristics of the respondents and the different mass media utilized by the respondents. To accomplish this study simple random sampling technique was used in selecting 120 farmers. Questionnaires/interview schedules were administered to respondents for obtaining the required information. Percentages, frequencies, chi square and regression analysis were used to analyze the data. The results exposed that a simple majority 54.1 percent of the respondents gave 1st preference to TV, 25.0 percent gave 2nd preference to radio and 16.7 percent gave 3rd preference to print media in obtaining the agricultural. As effectiveness of mass media in dissemination of agricultural information, the respondents ranked TV as 1st, radio as 2nd, and print media as 3rd.

However, if their operations are not properly and efficiently regulated, it can lead to underdevelopment. Hence, this study focused on the prospects of regulating electronic media activities in Ghana by using the National Media Commission (NMC) as a case study. The mixed research method was used as well as primary and secondary data. The primary data was collected through questionnaires and interview guides. Purposive and simple random sampling techniques was used to select 100 respondents for the study. The findings of the study revealed that there are various existing regulations governing the electronic media in Ghana. It was also found that there are problems and challenges facing the NMC in the discharge of its duties. With the fall of the regimes in Tunisia and Egypt the term 'Facebook Revolution' was coined depicting the world's most popular social media platform as a condition sine qua non for the Arab revolutions. Moving on from the extreme positions of cyber-utopians and pessimists, this study identifies and analyses mechanisms of use and potential intermediary effects of social media in connection with other driving factors of mass demonstrations that led to the fall of the Mubarak regime in early 2011. Semi-structured focus interviews were carried out with social media activists in Cairo between November 20th and 24th, 2011. The qualitative content analysis of eight interviews allowed for the identification of relevant categories and sub-categories as well as possible connections between them. Additionally, a thorough analysis of the Egyptian socio-economic, political and media system in the years leading up to the revolution provides the basis for valuable and contextual conclusions. Among the key findings is the accelerating effect of social media in mobilizing the Egyptian population to take part in mass demonstrations. Whereas the organizational function is limited to online network effects rather than facilitating the coordination of protesters on the ground, a significant impact of social media on the perception of a collective identity and threshold levels relevant for individual protest behavior was identified through this research.
