This book presents an algorithm for the detection of an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) signal in a cognitive radio context by means of a joint and iterative channel and noise estimation technique. Based on the minimum mean square criterion, it performs an accurate detection of a user in a frequency band, by achieving a quasi-optimal channel and noise variance estimation if the signal is present, and by estimating the noise level in the band if the signal is absent. Organized into three chapters, the first chapter provides the background against which the system model is presented, as well as some basics concerning the channel statistics and the transmission of an OFDM signal over a multipath channel. In Chapter 2, the proposed iterative algorithm for the noise variance and the channel estimation is detailed, and in Chapter 3, an application of the algorithm for the free-band detection is proposed. In both Chapters 2 and 3, the principle of the algorithm is presented in a simple way, and more elaborate developments are also provided. The different assumptions and assertions in the developments and the performance of the proposed method are validated through simulations, and compared to methods of the scientific literature

Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) is a very potential technique for transmitting high bit rate data over indoor and outdoor wireless communication channels with high bandwidth efficiency and robustness to multipath delay. OFDM is a multichannel modulation that divides a given channel into many parallel sub-channels or subcarriers, so that multiple symbols are sent in parallel. The first multichannel modulation systems appeared in the 1950's as military radio links, best characterized as frequency-division multiplexed systems. The first OFDM schemes were presented by Chang and Saltsburg, in which actual use/ practicability of OFDM was limited. However, later on the OFDM was made more practical through work describe in the article uses Discrete Fourier transform (DFT) with a cyclic prefix. The DFT implemented with a Fast Fourier Transform (FFT)) and the cyclic prefix have made OFDM both practical and attractive to the radio link designer. A similar multichannel modulation scheme, Discrete Multi-Tone (DMT) modulation, has been developed for static channels such as the digital subscriber loop.

Orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) systems provide efficient spectral usage by allowing overlapping in the frequency domain. Additionally, they are highly immune to multipath delay spread. In these systems, modulation and demodulation can be done using Inverse Fast Fourier Transform (IFFT) and Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) operations, which are computationally efficient. OFDM allows suppression of inter-symbol interference (ISI), provides flexible bandwidth allocation and may increase the capacity in terms of number of users. In this work, we have investigated the performance of different error correcting techniques for OFDM systems. These techniques are based on Convolutional codes, Linear Block codes and Reed-Solomon codes. Simulations are performed to evaluate the considered techniques for different channel conditions. By comparing the three techniques, the results show that Reed-Solomon codes performs the best for all error rates due to its consistency in performance at both low and high code rates which we verified by results.

Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) is a popular multicarrier modulation technique with the ability to provide high data rates over echo-ladened channels. It has excellent robustness to impairments caused by multipath, which includes frequency selective fading. Unfortunately, OFDM is very sensitive to the carrier frequency offset (CFO) that is introduced by the down conversion process. The objective of this book is to develop and analyze an algorithm for blind CFO recovery suitable for use with a practical zero-Intermediate Frequency (zero-IF) OFDM telecommunications system. A blind CFO recovery algorithm based upon characteristics of the received signal power spectrum is proposed. The algorithm's error performance is mathematically analyzed and the theoretical results are verified with simulations. The simulation shows that the performance of the proposed algorithm agrees with the mathematical analysis. The proposed algorithm performs well in comparison and does not suffer from many of the disadvantages of existing blind CFO recovery techniques. Most notably, its performance is not significantly degraded by noisy, frequency selective channels.

High spectral efficiency and high transmission data rate are the challenging requirements of wireless broadband communications. The MIMO technology has rapidly gained in popularity due to its powerful performance-enhancing capabilities. Spatial diversity can be obtained by using multiple antennas and space-time codes. For future wireless broadband systems, OFDM is discussed as access scheme. OFDM provides an essentially flat fading channel for each subcarrier by insertion of a cyclic guard interval at each antenna. Therefore, space-time block codes are well suited to be applied in OFDM. We investigate SFBC for OFDM systems with multiple transmit antennas, where coding is applied in the frequency domain rather than in the time domain. In this thesis, performance of two coding techniques STBC and SFBC is analyzed in OFDM. In order to appreciate the performances offered by coding through space and frequency, different simulation scenarios have been proposed where variation of the modulation order , channel fading, antenna selection technique, receiver diversity and effect of power conditions have been considered.

The HJB equation is formulated using a suitable cost functional to tackle system uncertainties and constraints on the input. Utilizing the Lyapunov direct method, the controller is shown to be optimal with respect to a cost, which include penalty on the control effort and system states, and upper bound on the system uncertainties. The controller requires the knowledge of the maximum bound of system uncertainties. In the proposed algorithm, Neural Network (NN) is used to find approximate solution of HJB equation using least squares method. Proposed algorithm has been applied on bilinear systems with matched and unmatched uncertainties. Necessary theoretical and simulation results are presented to validate the proposed algorithm.

In addition, a new frequency allocation technique and power allocation methods are illustrated. This provides an efficient spectrum allocation at the edge and center of the cell to co-ordinate with Femtocells and Macrocells for better network performance. It has been observed from the results that this novel technique with the Femtocells guarantees significantly increased data-rate, increased network power efficiency, frequency reuse factor of one through-out the cell, reduced inter-cell interference and increased network capacity with simple design to meet the QoS need of users. This frequency reuse scheme provides a solution for current challenges in wireless industries by offering a simple and efficient inter-cell interference coordination (ICIC) technique for the next-generation wireless network.

Master's Thesis from the year 2008 in the subject Engineering - Communication Technology, grade: erfolgreich bestanden, Keio University (Graduate school of Science and Technology - School of Science for Open and Environmental Systems), language: English, abstract: Non-orthogonality among adjacent OFDM channels creates OFDM adjacent channel interference and it heavily affects the entire system's performance. Conventional methods to avoid OFDM adjacent channel interference are not only insufficient but also are wasting a lot of frequency resources. In this research, a method using combinations of modulationschemes is proposed to avoid effects of OFDM adjacent channel interference. It can be obtained by modulating the sub-carriers at the outer sides of an OFDM channel with lower order modulation schemes (such as BPSK or QPSK), while modulating the sub-carriers at the inner side of the OFDM channel with higher order modulation schemes (such as 16QAM or 64QAM). Intensive simulations have been carried out to evaluate the performance of theproposed method. The simulation results have shown an increase in the OFDM system's resistance against adjacent channel interference while still maintain the bandwidth efficiency.

However, as the OFDM signals are the sum of signals with random amplitude and phase, they are likely to have large PAPR that requires a linear high-power- amplifier (HPA) with an extremely high dynamic range, which is expensive and inefficient. Furthermore, any amplifier nonlinearity causes intermodulation products resulting in unwanted out-of-band power. With the growing complexity of personal mobile communication systems demanding higher data-rates and high levels of integration using low-cost CMOS technology, overall system performance has become more sensitive to RF analog front-end impairments. Designing integrated transceivers requires a thorough understanding of the whole transceiver chain including RF analog front-end and digital baseband. Communication system engineers have to include RF analog imperfections in their simulation benches in order to study and quantify their impact on the system performance. Here the author explores key RF analog impairments in a transceiver and demonstrates how to model their impact from a communication system design view-point. He discusses the design aspects of the front end of transceivers (both receivers and transmitters) and provides the reader with a way to optimize a complex mixed-signal platform by taking into account the characteristics of the RF/analog front-end. Key features of this book include: Practical examples illustrated by system simulation results based on WiFi and mobile WiMAX OFDM transceivers An overview of the digital estimation and compensation of the RF analog impairments such as power amplifier distortion, quadrature imbalance, and carrier and sampling frequency offsets An exposition of the challenges involved in the design of both RF analog circuits and DSP communication circuits in deep submicron CMOS technology MATLAB® codes for RF analog impairments models hosted on the companion website Uniquely the book bridges the gap between RFIC design specification needs and communication systems simulation, offering readers RF analog impairments modeling knowledge and a comprehensive approach to unifying theory and practice in system modelling. It is of great value to communication systems and DSP engineers and graduate students who design communication processing engines, RF/analog systems and IC design engineers involved in the design of communication platforms.

Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2009 in the subject Electrotechnology, grade: 1.0, University of Duisburg-Essen (Institute of Electrical Power Systems), course: Electrical Engineering, language: English, abstract: The primary objective of this dissertation is to develop a black box optimization tool. The algorithm should be able to solve complex nonlinear, multimodal, discontinuous and mixed-integer power system optimization problems without any model reduction. Although there are many computational intelligence (CI) basedalgorithms which can handle these problems, they require intense human intervention in the form of parameter tuning, selection of a suitable algorithm for a given problem etc. The idea here is to develop an algorithm that works relatively well on a variety of problems with minimum human effort. The most significant optimization task in the power system operation is the scheduling of various generation resources (Unit Commitment, UC). The current practice used in UC modelling is the binary approach. This modelling results in a high dimension problem. This in turn leads to increased computational effort anddecreased efficiency of the algorithm. A duty cycle based modelling proposed in this thesis results in 80 percent reduction in the problem dimension. The stern uptime and downtime requirements are also included in the modelling. Therefore, the search process mostly starts in a feasible solution space. From the investigations on a benchmark problem...

As a promising technique, OFDM has been widely used in emerging broadband communication systems, such as digital audio broadcasting (DAB), high-definition television (HDTV), and wireless local area network (IEEE 802.11a and HIPERLAN/2).However, as the OFDM signals are the sum of signals with random amplitude and phase, they are likely to have large PAPR that require a linear high-power- amplifier (HPA) with an extremely high dynamic range which is expensive and inefficient. Furthermore, any amplifier nonlinearity causes intermodulation products resulting in unwanted out-of-band power. A number of approaches have been proposed to deal with the PAPR problem, including amongst others, clipping, clipping-and-filtering (CF), coding, companding transform, active constellation extension (ACE), selected mapping (SLM), and partial transmit sequence (PTS).This book proposes an improvement in the selected mapping technique. The resulting scheme can also be applied to the multiple transmitting antenna cases.Further, it compares the simulation results to the existing techniques namely exponential companding transform, repeated clipping and filtering, and adaptive active constellation extension.

Recently, sparse signal approximation has become an increasingly important research area in signal processing. It attracts a lot of interest due to its wide range of practical applications. In this work, a novel adaptive filtering algorithm with relative low computational complexity that is capable of exploiting the sparsity of systems is proposed. The basic idea here is, we adopt a p-norm constraint in the cost function of the variable step-size least mean square (VSSLMS) algorithm. This constrain imposes a zero attraction at each filter coefficient based on their respective relative value. Also, the convergence analysis of the proposed algorithm is presented and the stability condition is derived. The performance of the proposed algorithm has been compared to those of the Zero Attraction Least Mean Square(ZA-LMS), windowing ZA-LMS(wZA-LMS), Non-uniform Norm Constraint LMS(NNCLMS) in a system identification setting for different additive Gaussian noise(AGN), additive correlated noise(ACN)and additive impulsive noise(AIN) environments. The proposed algorithm has always shown superior performance to the others with less or comparable number of computations.

This bachelor thesis describes the development of a template generation algorithm based on structured product data that are modeled in the organic product catalog Goliath. Goliath was developed during several projects at Otto-von-Guericke University, Magdeburg. The suggested algorithm is an extension for the existing catalog implementation. It will introduce several analysis steps which explore structural as well as semantic aspects and create possibilities to group products based on their semantic similarity. After this, the work defines a format for product description templates and also shows how to extract those by using Greedy algorithms. The templates can be used to simplify product creation for the product creator. Finally, the thesis combines all steps to an overall template generation process and states recommendations for the use of this process in a distributed environment.

Semantic web represents a technique for getting semantic information from the particular domain ontology. It involves retrieving of the data semantically through domain ontology's based on user queries. Semantic web based Searching mechanisms which will perform search on the reformed query and display the list of matched documents. In past, various ontology merging algorithms had been anticipated based on the concept of removing overlaps. Here, a new approach of ontology merging is proposed based on the semantic analysis that deals with same domain specific ontology's. Proposed algorithm is fully automated merging algorithm that uses the class semantics, property semantics using Wordnet. The need of ontology merging that will help to maintain ontology's and the interaction with these ontology's will increase.

OFDM has been an attractive choice for digital modulation in the recent years due to its robustness to channel fading and invulnerability to intersymbol interference. However, to achieve an optimal performance the corresponding channel estimation scheme need to be accurate. This book focuses on the use of guard intervals between successive OFDM symbols for channel estimation. A hybrid of blind and semi-blind estimation techniques is proposed to create an energy efficient scheme that can maintain accurate channel estimation as well as a low transmission BER. Multipath fading channel are considered for performance evaluation. The proposed hybrid scheme is tested in static as well as time varying channel environments using computer simulations. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme outperforms the existing schemes on the basis of BER performance for the same SNR.

A treatise on investigating tracking control and synchronization control of fractional-order nonlinear systems with system uncertainties, external disturbance, and input saturation Robust Adaptive Control for Fractional-Order Systems, with Disturbance and Saturation provides the reader with a good understanding on how to achieve tracking control and synchronization control of fractional-order nonlinear systems with system uncertainties, external disturbance, and input saturation. Although some texts have touched upon control of fractional-order systems, the issues of input saturation and disturbances have rarely been considered together. This book offers chapter coverage of fractional calculus and fractional-order systems; fractional-order PID controller and fractional-order disturbance observer; design of fractional-order controllers for nonlinear chaotic systems and some applications; sliding mode control for fractional-order nonlinear systems based on disturbance observer; disturbance observer based neural control for an uncertain fractional-order rotational mechanical system; adaptive neural tracking control for uncertain fractional-order chaotic systems subject to input saturation and disturbance; stabilization control of continuous-time fractional positive systems based on disturbance observer; sliding mode synchronization control for fractional-order chaotic systems with disturbance; and more. Based on the approximation ability of the neural network (NN), the adaptive neural control schemes are reported for uncertain fractional-order nonlinear systems Covers the disturbance estimation techniques that have been developed to alleviate the restriction faced by traditional feedforward control and reject the effect of external disturbances for uncertain fractional-order nonlinear systems By combining the NN with the disturbance observer, the disturbance observer based adaptive neural control schemes have been studied for uncertain fractional-order nonlinear systems with unknown disturbances Considers, together, the issue of input saturation and the disturbance for the control of fractional-order nonlinear systems in the present of system uncertainty, external disturbance, and input saturation Robust Adaptive Control for Fractional-Order Systems, with Disturbance and Saturation can be used as a reference for the academic research on fractional-order nonlinear systems or used in Ph.D. study of control theory and engineering.

Master's Thesis from the year 2017 in the subject Business economics - Supply, Production, Logistics, grade: 1,7, University of Groningen (Economics and Business), language: English, abstract: Pull systems can be simple but effective production control systems. However, most pull systems do not perform well with random processing times and have a limited applicability for the MTO sector. The systems do not achieve a decent reduction of total throughput times (TTT) or only under special conditions. The unsolved problem is how to design a load-based system that is able to perform well with random processing times. To overcome this problem a load-based pull system with an adapted release mechanism is proposed. Pull systems need to balance the workload effectively over the different routes and stations in order to reduce TTT. By prioritizing orders regarding their size, the adapted release mechanism balances the workload within the routes and between the different routes. A discrete event simulation with several sets of experiments was conducted to test this release mechanism in a load-based system and compare it to various other pull systems. The results show an improved performance of the proposed system compared to the other systems. The magnitude of this performance improvement strongly depends on the used ratio of large to small orders.

Uniquely reflects an engineering view to social systems in a wide variety of contexts of application Social Systems Engineering: The Design of Complexity brings together a wide variety of application approaches to social systems from an engineering viewpoint. The book defines a social system as any complex system formed by human beings. Focus is given to the importance of systems intervention design for specific and singular settings, the possibilities of engineering thinking and methods, the use of computational models in particular contexts, and the development of portfolios of solutions. Furthermore, this book considers both technical, human and social perspectives, which are crucial to solving complex problems. Social Systems Engineering: The Design of Complexity provides modelling examples to explore the design aspect of social systems. Various applications are explored in a variety of areas, such as urban systems, health care systems, socio-economic systems, and environmental systems. It covers important topics such as organizational design, modelling and intervention in socio-economic systems, participatory and/or community-based modelling, application of systems engineering tools to social problems, applications of computational behavioral modeling, computational modelling and management of complexity, and more. Highlights an engineering view to social systems (as opposed to a “scientific” view) that stresses the importance of systems intervention design for specific and singular settings Divulges works where the design, re-design, and transformation of social systems constitute the main aim, and where joint considerations of both technical and social perspectives are deemed important in solving social problems Features an array of applied cases that illustrate the application of social systems engineering in different domains Social Systems Engineering: The Design of Complexity is an excellent text for academics and graduate students in engineering and social science—specifically, economists, political scientists, anthropologists, and management scientists with an interest in finding systematic ways to intervene and improve social systems.
