Mili Samir, Martinez Carolina Sourcing Agricultural Produce from Mediterranean Countries to the EU

Successive Association Agreements between the EU and its Mediterranean Partner Countries (MPCs) aimed mostly at fostering trade liberalization. The analysis of agricultural trade flows between both areas has been traditionally approached according to geographical proximity and political relations via quantitative trade models. Available evidence reveals serious difficulties to conduct thorough analysis with the mentioned models. An alternative analytical avenue would be the use of qualitative approaches linked to Global Value Chain analysis. This book focuses on analyzing the buyer side of the value chains for the main agricultural products sourced from MPCs to the EU, taking Spain as a representative case. The analysis provides primary information for better profiling the opportunities and constraints of these flows, and deriving implications to improve the efficiency of the target value chains. No previous references about the topic investigated were found in the specialized literature, which makes this research probably the first attempt to analyze Euro-Mediterranean agricultural trade dynamics using the value chain approach from the buyer market perspective.

Master's Thesis from the year 2012 in the subject Economics - Foreign Trade Theory, Trade Policy, grade: A, University of Hohenheim, course: International Food- And Agricultural Trade, language: English, abstract: This thesis reviews the border effect approach as an application of gravity models of trade and different methods of including multilateral resistance terms (MRTs) in it. Some focus is laid on the endogeneity problem of the approach. In an empirical application of the approach, agricultural trade between Turkey and the EU is analysed; the effect of data pooling and aggregation is studied; the conversion of estimated border effects into ad-valorem tariff equivalents (AVEs) reveals the crucial importance of a reliable measure of the elasticity of substitution when trying to separate the effects of NTBs of the total effect of a border.Keywords: Non-tariff barriers to trade; gravity model; border effect approach; agricultural trade; EU; Turkey; ad-valorem tariff equivalents;

This dissertation deals with the question of the EU's external influence on transforming societies. Is the external influence coherent with internal claims? Trade is the EU's most important external policy area. The EU is an economic giant based on the largest single market in the world. Thus the EU has power in and through trade. The EU makes increasingly the adaptation of normative standards acondition to access its market. Does the EU integrate also standards on gender equality? And does the EU transform gender regimes globally through trade? What impacts does the EU have on gender regimes? This dissertation examines gender impacts in the Sustainability Impact Assessments that show possible impacts of trade agreements between the EU and its partners. The analysis shows that gender is secondary to economic growth and not directed towards gender equality. As aconsequence the EU does not use its power through trade and the coherence of internal and external efforts is questionable.

In 2010, the global Fair Trade turnover reached €3.4 billion showing an upward trend with double-digit growing rates per year. One of the biggest selling markets for certified Fair Trade products is the European Union (EU) which is thus a crucial actor when it comes to promote and market Fair Trade goods (see attached table 1). Yet, besides the EU's effort of achieving a fairer international trading system, it can be argued that the EU might be even partially responsible for the misery in those countries. In this context the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) of the EU is controversially discussed. About €60 billion which account for 42% of the total EU budget are currently spent on agricultural subsidies. They are provided to European farmers to support and protect the internal agricultural market. Consequences for other agrarian countries are immense. In our research paper we want to investigate the paradox on Europe spending money on Fair Trade on the one hand, while dishing out harming subsidies on the other hand. We question whether it would be more beneficial for developing countries if Europe stepwise reduces its agricultu...

Susanne Voigt The customs union between Turkey and the EU

This paper shall investigate the trade integration between Turkey and the EU. The plan of the book is as follows. At first the historical background of the development concerning the trade relations between the two parties is conveyed. This includes the period from first association to implementing a customs union (CU) between Turkey and the European Union (EU) and to deeper integration abolishing barriers of trade until today.Subsequently an evaluation of the influence of the customs union follows in chapter 3 which constitutes the main part of the paper. Hereby the analysis is divided into the short-term static and long-term dynamic effects of the CU with the EU that Turkey entered on 1st January 1996. To analyze the static effects this paper adopts Viner's traditional approach, by comparing the trade creation effects with the trade diversion effects resulting from the removal of trade restrictions for Turkey and the EU as a whole. Thus, the predominant economical theory applied in this paper is the neoclassical customs union theory. This theory was chosen because it still is the predominant and widely recognized theory in analyzing trade data providing a variety of tools. Within the neoclassical theory Ricardo as well as Heckscher-Ohlin play an important role as a tool of analysis. In the relevant passages in the text the most important theoretical principles will be explained with the help of the Turkish example. At the limits of the neoclassical theories the new trad...

Seminar paper from the year 2011 in the subject Economics - International Economic Relations, grade: 1,3, Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg, language: English, abstract: Today we live in a globalized world and anybody can buy any product from any country in the world. But that is not completely true. Trade is not as free as many of us always think it is. There are still so many trade barriers which make international trade sometimes such an adventure. The World Trade Organization (WTO) was established to liberalize trade by reducing or eliminating tariffs and any other trade barriers. Therefore, all members have to contribute to that undertaking and make concessions. In the current round, named the Doha Development Agenda this does not work as it was meant to. A crucial issue in that conflict is agriculture. Developing countries and least developed countries complain about large amounts of subsidies paid by high-income countries such as the EU. In contrast, developed countries want developing countries to make concessions in terms of trade related intellectual property rights and trade related investment measures. So each country blames the other one instead of taking action and making the first step. This essay is structured into two main parts. The first part informs about some basics of protectionism and what happened so far in terms of agricultural liberalization. Chapter two gives a short overview of the existing types of protectionist measures to get a f...

Marie Kreipe Genetically Modified Food. Trade Regulation in view of Environmental Policy Objectives

The controversial issue of genetically modified (GM) food is discussed in this book. While the United States (US) is a strong supporter of GM technology having adopted a rather lax regulation of trade with GM products, the European Union (EU) is representing a sceptical position towards this new technology and has even imposed a de facto moratorium on further approval of GM products from 1998 to 2004. The purpose of this book is an extensive analysis of the current status on risks and benefits of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and a suggestion on how an appropriate regulation of GM products could be derived. Potential guidelines are provided for policy formulation both in a qualitative and in a quantitative dimension. The US is applying the principle of substantial equivalence, which means that GM products are in their substance identical to products produced by conventional methods. Therefore, no new regulations are necessary for the trade with GM products. In contrast, the European Union (EU) disagrees that GM products are equivalent to their conventional counterparts due to the different production process. Instead, the EU refers to the precautionary principle in its GMO policy, meaning that trade with GM products should be restricted until it will be proven that no additional risks are implied by the use of these products. The divergence of opinions about the right policy to regulate GM products has significant impacts on trade flows and welfare effects. The US and...

Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2011 in the subject Business economics - Trade and Distribution, , language: English, abstract: When World Trade Organisation (WTO) brought agricultural trade in its domain there was great expectation that trade of agricultural items will improve and masses will gain from it through greater market access and better prices particularly to the developing nations. But at the same time there was fear among the developing nations that foul play of some developed nations may have negative impact on market access and better prices for their produce. The present paper analyses the Indian concerns in this respect. It is found that the negative impact of WTO on agricultural commodities exports as it was thought is not a valid case for India. India's agricultural items have got a due respect in international market. Not only the quantity of export has increased but also there is improvement in the prices of agricultural items. Non traditional agricultural items have got greater market access and better prices followed by traditional items and items of future potential.

Yet, the ability of the agreements to embody ACP states development concerns is put into question as manny authors in the field start to question their sustainability. This paper examines through a legal analysis of some articles of the Cote d'Ivoire Stepping Stone Agreement, how ECOWAS can strengthen its approach in negotiating a comprehensive EPA for the West Africa region. This study, though intended primarily for the ECOWAS negotiators and the civil society in ACP countries will be useful to scholars and anyone interested in recent developments in North South Trade.

This book gives insights in the understanding of the impact of Agricultural subsidies on the benefiting small scale farmers. Most developing countries who are promoting and implementing pro-poor policies use Agricultural subsidies with a view to increasing Agricultural production and reduce poverty among the small scale farmers. Such economic policies may, however, not achieve the intended objectives. Therefore, using this book, the Economic Analysis Student or Agricultural Economics and/or Economics Student will find it very useful to understand the dynamics of Agricultural subsidies and how they impact or benefit the small scale farmers. In addition, the book is very helpful to both under graduate and Post graduate Economic Policy analysis, Agricultural Economics and Economics students who wish to understand the impact of Agricultural subsidies.

Networks of International Trade and Investment. Understanding globalisation through the lens of network analysis

In recent decades, the international economy has witnessed fundamental changes in the way manufacturing is organised: products are no longer manufactured in their entirety in a single location. Instead, the production process is often split across a number of stages located in countries that are frequently far apart from each other. By spreading out their manufacturing and supply chain activities globally through international investment and intra-firm trade, Multinational enterprises (MNEs) play a focal role in this reorganisation of production. Our ability to understand the global economy, therefore, requires an understanding of the interdependencies between the entities involved in such fragmented production. Traditional methods and statistical approaches are insufficient to address this challenge. Instead, an approach is required that allows us to account for these interdependencies. The most promising approach so far is network analysis. ‘Networks of International Trade and Investment’ makes a case for the use of network analysis alongside existing techniques in order to investigate pressing issues in international business and economics. The authors put forward a range of well-informed studies that examine compelling topics such as the role of emerging economies in global trade and the evolution of world trade patterns. They look at how network analysis, as both an approach and a methodology, can explain international business and economics phenomena, in particular, in ...

Winfred Kabatabaazi The EU-East African Community Economic Partnership Agreement

The EU under the auspice of the Cotonou Agreement is negotiating new trade agreements known as Economic Partnership Agreements (EPAs) with its African, Caribbean and Pacific partners (ACP). There is however a growing concern whether these free trade agreements are actually in conformity with the relevant World Trade Organisation law provisions. An analysis on the WTO compatibility of these Economic Partnership Agreements is included in this work. Further still is the controversial issue of trade and human rights; the discussion being whether human rights are relevant under trade law. This work addresses issues such as; the legal imperativeness of the right to food (as defined in the ICESCR) under the EPA and to what extent it has been incorporated in the current EU-EAC EPA framework negotiations. Most importantly also is the resultant impact such a trade agreement would have on the right to food in the East African society. With the possible violation of this right, legal redress is needed, thus a discussion on the justiciability of the human right to food is included herein.

Several agreements have been signed between the EU and India in the past few years, resulting in even more imports and exports, both of goods and services. This book analyses the trade relations between India and the European Union during 1990 to 2005. Chronology of Indo-EU trade since 1990 and different agreements to boost bilateral trade have been analysed in detail in this book, the comparison between India and EU, concerned to economy, currency, foreign trade etc. In conclusion there is no need for India to feel intimidated by the magnitude of the single market or its importance in world trade. Outside the developed world, India will remain one of the world's two or three largest and still expanding imports markets. India's principal needs are advanced technology and range of India's requirements will command the competing attention of rival suppliers. This would give India sufficient bargaining strength. Finally some suggestions are noted for improvement of India's trade relations with EU.

Akhil Gupta Solar Photovoltaics Engineering. A Power Quality Analysis Using Matlab Simulation Case Studies

The solar Photovoltaic (PV) technology is gaining significant levels and is going to contribute a major share of total generated electricity in the coming years. PV technology is becoming a promising alternative source for fossil fuels. However, Power Quality (PQ) is the major concern that occurs between the grid and an end user. Any typical electrical distribution system exhibits a passive characteristic with respect to power flows when power flows from a substation to load. However, with inclusion of solar PV generators, this behaviour tends to be changed. The main characteristics related to PQ, such as voltage level, frequency, power factor and Total Harmonic Distortion (THD), may be affected. This book presents the analysis of PQ with the integration of grid-connected PV systems as distributed generation. The role of Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) technique is investigated through implementing few basic MPPT techniques. Using the Matlab-simulation platform, the analysis of PQ is demonstrated. This analysis is based on real measurements of THD, Voltage levels, Current levels, DC voltage levels, real power and reactive power flows.

Open microfluidics or open-surface is becoming fundamental in scientific domains such as biotechnology, biology and space. First, such systems and devices based on open microfluidics make use of capillary forces to move fluids, without any need for external energy. Second, the “openness” of the flow facilitates the accessibility to the liquid in biotechnology and biology, and reduces the weight in space applications. This book has been conceived to give the reader the fundamental basis of open microfluidics. It covers successively The theory of spontaneous capillary flow, with the general conditions for spontaneous capillary flow, and the dynamic aspects of such flows. The formation of capillary filaments which are associated to small contact angles and sharp grooves. The study of capillary flow in open rectangular, pseudo-rectangular and trapezoidal open microchannels. The dynamics of open capillary flows in grooves with a focus on capillary resistors. The case of very viscous liquids is analyzed. An analysis of suspended capillary flows: such flows move in suspended channels devoid of top cover and bottom plate. Their accessibility is reinforced, and such systems are becoming fundamental in biology. An analysis of “rails” microfluidics, which are flows that move in channels devoid of side walls. This geometry has the advantage to be compatible with capillary networks, which are now of great interest in biotechnology, for molecular detection for example. Paper-based microfluidics where liquids wick flat paper matrix. Applications concern bioassays such as point of care devices (POC). Thread-based microfluidics is a new domain of investigation. It is seeing presently many new developments in the domain of separation and filtration, and opens the way to smart bandages and tissue engineering. The book is intended to cover the theoretical aspects of open microfluidics, experimental approaches, and examples of application.

Song L. Kaya Merdan, Songul Kaya Merdan Numerical Analysis of a Variational Multiscale Method for Turbulence

Despite efforts of more than centuries, turbulence phenomena is categorized as an unsolved problem. Turbulence is part of everyday's life. The majority of flows of industrial and technological applications are turbulent; natural flows are invariably so. There are many important and interesting physical phenomena which are connected with turbulent flows. Turbulence is observed in natural and engineering applications such as in weather prediction, air pollution, water pollution, aerodynamics and heat exchangers. This work considers an accurate and reliable solutions of turbulent flows. It is concerned with one of the most promising approaches to the numerical simulation of turbulent flows, the subgrid eddy viscosity models. We analyze both continuous and discontinuous finite element approximation of the new subgrid eddy viscosity model. This approach has the advantage that the diffusivity is introduced only on the small scales of the flow. Numerical test shows the new stabilization technique is robust and efficient in solving Navier-Stokes equations for a wide range of Reynolds numbers.

Objective of the negotiations is the generation of a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between the United States (U.S.) and the European Union (EU) to promote trade by reducing trade barriers, including tariff and non-tariff ones. In order to achieve this goal, several issue barriers have to be addressed, inter alia concerning non-tariff barriers including regulatory differences in the sectors of agriculture and food production. While the U.S. and the EU both have high standards concerning the consumer protection and food safety assessment, differences in the basic principle and implementation persist. Both countries pursue an agreement that follows the respective principles and still provides effective trade stimulation. However, based on the rooted differences in the particular food safety systems, challenges are inevitable. The objective of this study is the presentation of the U.S. and EU food safety system as well as special cases highlighting the differences between both systems in terms of risk assessment, prevention, responses and risk communication. The different factors are analyzed both theoretically and on the basis of practical examples. Additionally, the different matter...

Elise Verdonck The Role of The European Union in the Fight against Global Illegal Wildlife Trade

Seminar paper from the year 2014 in the subject Politics - Basics and General, grade: A, University of Auckland, course: European Environmental Law & Governance, language: English, abstract: The European Union (EU) ranks at the top of the list of global importers of wild animal and plant products. The estimated declared import value of the legal trade in wildlife products is worth billions of euros a year, and the extent of the EU market for wildlife products increases annually. The demand for wildlife animals and products is escalating worldwide. The majority of the wildlife trade into and within the EU is being exercised within the boundaries of the law, however illegal wildlife trade still occurs. Every year the enforcement authorities in the EU make over 5000 seizures. This illegal trafficking does not take into account sustainability concerns and may therefore result in the extinction of a species. Factors such as very high prices for wildlife products on the black market, low political awareness and low penalties aggravate the unsustainable and illegal trade. At the level of the EU many significant achievements in combating illegal wildlife trafficking have been accomplished. The biggest example of that are the EU Wildlife Trade Regulations, which implement the obligations for its member states under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). More in-depth national, regional and international cooperation could even e...

An expert review of recent progress in the study of turbulent flows with a focus on recently identified organized structures. This book reviews the recent progress in the study of the turbulent flows that sculpt the Earth’s surface, focusing in particular on the organized structures that have been identified in recent years within turbulent flows. These coherent flow structures can include eddies or vortices at the scale of individual grains, through structures that scale with the flow depth in rivers or estuaries, to the large-scale structure of flows at the morphological or landform scale. These flow structures are of wide interest to the scientific community because they play an important role in fluid dynamics and influence the transport, erosion and deposition of sediment and pollutants in a wide variety of fluid flow environments. Scientific knowledge of these structures has improved greatly over the past 20 years as computational fluid dynamics has come to play an increasing important part in building our understanding of coherent flow structures across a broad range of scales. Chapters comprise a series of major, invited papers and a selection of the most novel, innovative papers presented at the second Coherent Flow Structures Conference held August 3-5, 2011 at Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, British Columbia. Chapters focus on six major themes: Dynamics of coherent flow structures (CFS) in geophysical flows Interaction of turbulent flows, vegetation and ecological habitats Coherent structure of atmospheric flows Numerical modeling of coherent flow structures Turbulence in open channel flows Coherent flow structures, sediment transport and morphological feedbacks.

Flows with chemical reactions can occur in various fields such as combustion, process engineering, aeronautics, the atmospheric environment and aquatics. The examples of application chosen in this book mainly concern homogeneous reactive mixtures that can occur in propellers within the fields of process engineering and combustion: – propagation of sound and monodimensional flows in nozzles, which may include disequilibria of the internal modes of the energy of molecules; – ideal chemical reactors, stabilization of their steady operation points in the homogeneous case of a perfect mixture and classical instruments of experimental and theoretical analysis such as population balances, and the distribution of residence and passage times; – laminar and turbulent flames, separating those which are premixed from those which are not and which do not exhibit the same mechanisms, but which also occur in the case of triple flames. Flows and Chemical Reactions in Homogeneous Mixtures provides information on dimensional analysis, statistical thermodynamics with coupling between internal modes and chemical reactions, the apparition and damping of fluid turbulence as well as its statistical processing, bifurcations, flames in a confined medium and diffusion. Contents 1. Flows in Nozzles. 2. Chemical Reactors. 3. Laminar and Turbulent Flames. Appendix 1. Dimensionless Numbers, Similarity. Appendix 2. Thermodynamic Functions. Appendix 3. Julia Neumann The Revocation of registered Trade Marks in terms of Non-Use

Masterarbeit aus dem Jahr 2010 im Fachbereich Jura - Andere Rechtssysteme, Rechtsvergleichung, Note: B, University of Auckland, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: This paper deals with the non-use of registered trade marks. It mainly focuses on the trade mark system of New Zealand; however it compares this with selected issues of foreign trade mark systems. Unexpectedly, the non-use of registered trade marks is a topic which closely relates to the vivid field of promotion, competition, and globalization, although it is embedded in the rather static system of registration and administration. The non-use of a registered trade mark enables the opposition to initiate a procedure of revocation from the trade mark register against the respective trade mark. With removal from the trade mark register the trade mark rights of the owner hereby granted cease. Therefore, the application of revocation from the trade mark register in terms of non-use is, beside other grounds for removal, a common tactic of competitors to shed blocking trade marks. This paper shall give an overview of the formal procedure of application, including the legal aspects of the requisite standing, the competent forum and the burden of proof. However, the main focus of this analysis encompasses the legal term and definition of the use ("genuine use") of a trade mark. Unfortunately, New Zealand legislation as well as other Common Law and Civil Law jurisdictions gives minimal guidance on the interpretation of the te...

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2010 in the subject Economics - Foreign Trade Theory, Trade Policy, grade: 1,0, Vienna University of Economics and Business (Institut für Außenwirtschaft und Entwicklung), language: English, abstract: The following paper relates two of the most important economic phenomena, namely economic growth and international trade. Before analysing the relationship between two economic phenomena in detail, an overview of some of the most prominent empirical empirical studies concerning the relationship between openness to international trade and economic growth in general is provided. As most of them seem to have reached the conclusion that trade influences growth in a positive way, the question for the reasons of this presumably positive relationship arises. Factors which cause or influence economic growth in general as well as various channels through which trade might have an influence on growth are presented in the third and forth section. The importance of various sources of economic and the Solow-Model and the AK-Model are introduced in order to distinguish between long-run and short-run effects of capital accumulation, learning by doing and R&D on economic growth. The remaining analysis concentrates on one channel in particular, namely on howtrade determines a country's import and export structure. The importance of therange of products a country produces is enormous and affects economic growth and welfare. The fifth section introduces the st...

Master's Thesis from the year 2010 in the subject Business economics - Investment and Finance, grade: 1.0, Oxford Brookes University, course: MSc in International Management, language: English, abstract: Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) was a key factors in shaping worlds economy over the last couple of decades. During this period it grew faster than trade and was considered vehicle of increasing integration of the world economy. Despite being one of the poorest countries in Europe, Albania has managed to attract solid interest from foreign investors. Albania offers access to a growing market, to a competitive business environment, abundant availability of well-educated workforce and in possibility of the first mover advantage in some growing new markets. The government has made several economic reforms to deliver an enhanced investment climate. The aim of this dissertation is to assess and evaluate Albania's attractiveness to FDI in order to identify the policy implications required to increase inflows. Throughout the critical analysis conducted during the literature review, the author distils the 'host country determinants' framework based on the location variable to assess and evaluate Albania's attractiveness for FDI flows. Results provided a number of incentives and disincentives features of Albania's host country determinants, leading the author to provide policy implications, which aim at increasing inflows. FDI play an irreplaceable role for the...

The main concern of our study has been to do research on the topic, before deepening our curiosity on two core articles of the literature. By comparing Persson and Wilhelmsson analysis with Aiello and Demaria's, and examining them in contrast with other writings, we could determine the primary interests we need to take into account in order to assess, as accurately as possible, the impact of these trade agreements. In this manner, we explained why we retained the gravity model as the most reliable statistical model in our efforts of settling the most precise method of measurement, which has been besides a very commonly used one in the literature. We also considered taking into consideration the keydifficult points encountered when trying to reach our objectives, such as, on the one hand, avoiding omitting major factors of trade enhancement (i.e. distance or language) or on the other hand, excluding countries that would distort our conclusions due to their own composition (i.e. former USSR satellites). Our paper is innovative insofar as it offers a thorough investig...

Developing Countries in the World Trading System: The Uruguay Round and Beyond

Experience suggests that trade liberalization has contributed substantially to the remarkable growth of industrialised countries. However, for various reasons many developing countries have not yet been able to integrate successfully into global markets and reap the growth-inducing and poverty-reducing benefits of trade. This book argues that while developing countries are heavily represented in the WTO - accounting for about four fifths of its membership -there is still plenty of scope for the world trading system to work more effectively in their interests. The book examines the achievements of the Uruguay Round of trade negotiations in reforming the world trading system and the challenges to future reforms. It begins with an overview of the genesis of the world trading system and moves on to examine the key issues as they relate to developing countries. These include further liberalization of agricultural trade; abolition of the Multifibre Arrangement; environmental and labour standards; competition policy; regional integration in South East Asia; and the implications for developing Asian countries of the liberalization of the Chinese economy and its WTO membership. Furthermore, the book discusses the links between trade liberalization and poverty reduction -drawing on the experience of Asian countries - and puts forward arguments on how trade liberalization could effect a greater reduction in poverty. This is a timely and succinct presentation of the critical issues relat...

Legal Aspects of the EU Association Agreements with Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine in the Context of the EU Eastern Partnership Initiative

The present publication is probably the first comparative analysis of the new Association Agreements between the European Union, its Member States and Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine from a legal perspective. It mainly includes contributions by young scholars from Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine, which were prepared in a research project at the University of Kiel in 2014/2015.The three Association Agreements share many similarities, e. g. in the DCFTA parts of the agreements, but there are also significant differences, e. g. in the size of the agreements and in many details. Some provisions are also related to WTO rules, others to EU law. Parallels may also be seen with other EU trade agreements, such as CETA and TTIP. For a correct interpretation and application of the three Association Agreements a comparative view is helpful in order to avoid divergences in interpretation, but also in order to understand the existing specifics of each Agreement.Although the book is written from a legal perspective it is hoped to be useful for any reader interested in international trade and in political cooperation between the EU and its Eastern neighbours.

Roy Della Savia Migration and Emigration in Canada until 2003

This research discusses the relationship between the migration of skilled professional and managerial workers from Canada to the United States, the so-called "brain drain", and seeks to determine if and how the Canada-U.S. Free Trade Agreement (FTA) and the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) may have affected bilateral flows of permanent and non-permanent immigrants between the two countries.Classical economic theory suggests that trade and factor movements are substitutes, so that freer trade between Canada and the United States could be expected to reduce incentives for bilateral migration. On the other hand, the labor demands of multinational corporations in the emerging global marketplace require a greater degree of worker mobility than has heretofore existed. The research reviews available historic and longitudinal evidence related to political, social and economic effects of the FTA and the NAFTA.

Applications of mathematical heat transfer and fluid flow models in engineering and medicine Abram S. Dorfman, University of Michigan, USA Engineering and medical applications of cutting-edge heat and flow models This book presents innovative efficient methods in fluid flow and heat transfer developed and widely used over the last fifty years. The analysis is focused on mathematical models which are an essential part of any research effort as they demonstrate the validity of the results obtained. The universality of mathematics allows consideration of engineering and biological problems from one point of view using similar models. In this book, the current situation of applications of modern mathematical models is outlined in three parts. Part I offers in depth coverage of the applications of contemporary conjugate heat transfer models in various industrial and technological processes, from aerospace and nuclear reactors to drying and food processing. In Part II the theory and application of two recently developed models in fluid flow are considered: the similar conjugate model for simulation of biological systems, including flows in human organs, and applications of the latest developments in turbulence simulation by direct solution of Navier-Stokes equations, including flows around aircraft. Part III proposes fundamentals of laminar and turbulent flows and applied mathematics methods. The discussion is complimented by 365 examples selected from a list of 448 cited papers, 239 exercises and 136 commentaries. Key features: Peristaltic flows in normal and pathologic human organs. Modeling flows around aircraft at high Reynolds numbers. Special mathematical exercises allow the reader to complete expressions derivation following directions from the text. Procedure for preliminary choice between conjugate and common simple methods for particular problem solutions. Criterions of conjugation, definition of semi-conjugate solutions. This book is an ideal reference for graduate and post-graduate students and engineers.

Marek Čech The Impact of Renewable Energy on the EU Electricity Prices and CO2 Emissions

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2015 in the subject Energy Sciences, grade: 2.0, Charles University in Prague (Faculty of Social Sciences), course: Institute of Economic Studies, language: English, abstract: This work is focused on the topic of electricity pricing in the EU connected with the increasing use of renewable energy sources in electricity production and consumption. It provides background information related to the types of energy sources along with a summary of their benefits and drawbacks regarding both the environmental impact and financial costs. Furthermore, it involves both world and European electricity production statistics followed by an overview of the EU approach concerning the support of environment-friendly energy production methods. The core of the thesis is then an econometric panel data analysis based on the data collected from 13 member states of the EU over the period between 2010 and 2013 analysing two relationships. First, the impact of the share of renewable energy sources in the final electricity production on the European consumer electricity prices. Second, whether the replacement of fossil fuels by renewable energy sources causes a significant decrease in the CO2 emissions. In conclusion, this paper provides suggestions for further research based on the undertaken analyses. The results of the panel data analysis presented suggest that household electricity prices in the studied EU member states increase with the deployment of electricity produ...

Pierre Reiner The Role of Free Trade Agreements in a Globalizing World

Referat / Aufsatz (Schule) aus dem Jahr 2016 im Fachbereich Politik - Internationale Politik - Thema: Globalisierung, pol. Ökonomie, Note: 1,4, , Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: The document analyzes the impact of Free Trade Agreements, as part of globalization, on societies, economies, and the environment. It offers answers to the question whether the global gap between industrial and developing states will increase in the process of globalization while summarizing many factual connections of global governance precisely. "The Role of Free Trade Agreements in a Globalizing World" is written in English. The base of the thesis expressed in this document consists of the conclusion that free trade, as part of globalization, is inevitable and being implemented at increasing speed. Thus, the analysis of the impact of free trade on societies, economies, and the environment is crucial to the understanding of future developments. This document covers all of the above aspects and aims at providing an outline of global trends. This document will solely discuss the role of FTAs and pay less attention to the other methods of free trade expansion. Nonetheless, most arguments, correlations and findings concerning FTAs can also be mentioned when discussing these other measures. They do not only apply to FTAs. The importance of the issue presented in this introduction becomesclear as one takes a closer look at the phenomenon of globalization.Das Dokument analysiert den Einfluss von Freihand...

Appendix 3. Concepts of Turbulence. Appendix 4. Thermodynamic functions for a mixture in disequilibrium. Appendix 5. Notion of bifurcation. Appendix 6. Confined flame. Appendix 7. Limits of Validity of the First-order Expansions for Diffusion Flames. About the Authors Roger Prud’homme has been Emeritus Research Director at CNRS, in France, since 2004. His most recent research topics have included flames (premixed flame modeling and their behavior in microgravity), two phase flows (droplet combustion with condensation of the products, sound propagation in suspensions, vortex, chock wave structure) and the modeling of fluid interfaces. He has published 5 books, 7 contributions to volumes and 50 publications in international journals.
