Malanding S. Jaiteh Land Cover Dynamics in Miombo Ecosystems

Characterizing the dynamics of landscape spatial patterns in the Miombo is fundamental to understanding the impacts of changes in landscape structure on ecological processes and functions. Land Cover Dynamics in Miombo Ecosystems examines methodologies for computer-aided classification of Landsat TM data for mapping land use and land cover in Miombo ecosystems in Southern Africa. The work compares supervised and unsupervised methods for classifying Landsat TM and developed a hybrid supervised-unsupervised classification method, Stepwise Thematic Classification (STC). STC substantially improved both the accuracy and reliability of the classification process. Spatial pattern analysis was used to quantify changes in landscape metrics as a result of land cover transitions under different land tenure systems at locations in Malawi and Zimbabwe.

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2015 in the subject Geography / Earth Science - Cartography, Geographic Information Science and Geodesy, grade: A, , course: Land Resource Planning and Management, language: English, abstract: Kenya is endowed with an array of internal wetlands dispersed around the main water basins, as it is in many developing countries in the world, its rural population is characterized by rapid growth rate over the past years. As such, watersheds are continually facing environmental degradation due to the limited supply of the resource and over exploitation to cater for this increasing population. This has resulted to immense land use conversion in the watershed that has a ripple effect on several elements of the watershed. Per se, the research aimed at assessing the land use change and its influence on stream discharge in Nanyuki River Watershed. The main objective of the study is to assess the land use changes and its effect on stream discharge in Nanyuki River watershed. This is done by identifying and mapping the land uses; assessing the trend and periodicity in stream discharge and precipitation; and the correlation between forest cover and stream discharge between 1985 and 2008. Based on the satellite imagery the land use change was assessed, where the forest cover areas were calculated and correlated to stream discharge data. This correlation established the direction and significance of association. The results showed an increased land use change where...

Master's Thesis from the year 2013 in the subject Geography / Earth Science - Cartography, Geographic Information Science and Geodesy, Sheffield Hallam University, language: English, abstract: This research examines the changes in land use/land cover in the city of Sulaymaniyah north of Iraq and identifies land surface temperature variations among the land cover types. The primary aim of this study is to use Landsat-5 TM imagery with GIS techniques to study and investigate the impact of urban expansion on land surface temperature (LST) for three year periods. Three Landsat 5 TM images were obtained in July 1984, August 2000 and October 2010. Land use categories were derived through the use of supervised classification techniques and the land surface temperature was obtained by computing the brightness temperature from the satellite sensor. The result showed that between 1984 and 2010, there was a mild decrease in open and barren lands from 69.3% in 1984 to 57.2% in 2010 while the built-up areas increased from 11.5% in 1984 to 15.5% in 2000 and reached 25.5% by 2010.The political and economic changes in the study area are the main factors behind the recent urban expansion. The lowest LST readings were taken from the vegetation lands with values of 28oC in 1984, 29oC in 2000 and 34oC in 2010. The barren lands recorded the highest temperature of 38oC, 38oC and 34oC for the years 1984, 2000 and 2010 respectively. An interesting observation in this study is the fact that the u...

Salinity and relevant land use change related problem has been triggered in the south-western coastal region of Bangladesh. Salinity problem received very little attention in the past and Land uses in coastal Bangladesh have gone through major changes over the last half century. The southwestern region of Bangladesh is a food deficit area where net food production and diversity of food production have declined significantly over recent decades. Very recent two devastating cyclonic storm surges (SIDR and Aila) hit in the south-western region and it changing the level of salinity and due to its effect normal crop production became very risky. This study is investigating the salinity level condition and its impact on land use changes using multi temporal satellite data from 1975-2014 in the three (3) unions of Shyamnagar Upazila under Satkhira District. Remote Sensing and GIS techniques both used to know the salinity effects on land use changes at present context with comparison to previous land use status. Due to saline water intrusion, Shyamnagar Upazila have faced land use conversion related problem throughout the year.

Landuse and landcover change is taken as a serious problem in changing the environment, which in turn, could lead to global climatic change and food security. This change could be the result of intricate interactions of socio economic and biophysical situation like economic, technological advancement, demography, and etc. This paper examines the changes in land use-cover types in the degraded environment of eastern Ethiopia over the last 20 years, and how such changes have influenced agricultural, local lakes and livelihoods sustainability, especially in the Alemaya district. Changes of land use-cover were measured through satellite image interpretations, while local perceptions and description of change were addressed through household interviews and field observations. The paternal analysis of the study using GIS and remote sensing technique, will be important indicator and guideline for sustainable resource utilization and management, which provides a basis for conservation and planning. Moreover, the methodology and approcahes used in the study will give a guide line for other researchers, who have similar interests.

Eskindir Ayele Land Use Land Cover Change Detection Using Remote sensing data and GIS

Monitoring land use land cover change at all levels has become central element in sustainable development, natural resources management and environmental protection. Such daily issues of the FAO and others inspired me to conduct this work using RS data and GIS over the remnant forest area in south western part of Ethiopia, Bonga town and its environs, applying PCC change detection technique and Cellular Automata Markov LULCC model. The change detection involved processing of three Landsat images and PCC. Accordingly, a chained transition was observed between the land covers all at the expense of forest cover between the study years. The projection of change has also showed that if appropriate measures are not taken the study area will suffer from environmental degradation in the near future. Thereby, in this era of global environmental crisis, monitoring and management of land is unquestionable for all on the surface of the sphere. Thus, the empirical findings of this book can be used for detailed explanatory, impact assessment, prescription and evaluative studies on the subject. Furthermore, it will provide inputs for policy formulation and decision making at different levels.

Girmay Daniel, Kebede Fassil, Zenebe Amanuel Land Use Change Effect on Soil Health

Estimates indicate that a majority of the earth's land has been seriously degraded. One of the key degradation problems is poor soil health, which has been identified as a key constraint in agricultural productivity and reducing rural poverty in many parts of the tropics, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa. Ethiopia's economy is primarily based on agriculture. However, this sector is increasingly being confronted with a rapidly growing population, and this has resulted in land use/cover changes. The changes in land use disturbs ecosystem balance and lead to a significant change in the physical, chemical, and biological soil health thereby yield declines. Half of the Ethiopian highland arable lands are moderately to severely degrade. Tigray, the Northern region of Ethiopia, suffers from extreme land degradation and soil health deterioration. Agulae catchment, the study area which is found in Eastern Tigray also has similar problems. Since previous studies on factors affecting soil health depletion has not been made at a catchment level, this study was conducted to fill the existing knowledge gap on the effects of and use change on soil health and its implication on soil management.

This book provides a comprehensive yet accessible overview of land systems vulnerability assessment in Asia – fundamental to the understanding of the link between global change, environmental sustainability and human wellbeing. The extent and intensity of human interactions with the environment have increased spectacularly since the Industrial Revolution. Thus, the global change research community and development practitioners increasingly recognize the need to address the adverse consequences of changes taking place in the structure and function of the biosphere and the implications for society. With a focus on Asia, this book provides an overview of the vulnerability of land systems and the subsequent multiple stressors in this region. The book offers a discussion surrounding the potential causal processes that affect land systems vulnerability and our capacity to cope with different perturbations. It also identifies factors that help to integrate vulnerability assessment into policy and decision-making. • Addresses the complex issues arising from human–environment interactions that cannot be satisfactorily dealt with by core disciplinary methods alone. • Key coverage of a variety of topics from the vulnerability of smallholder agriculture and urban systems to the impact of socioeconomic processes at the sub-regional level. • Coverage of the causal processes that affect land systems vulnerability and capacity to cope with different perturbations are documented. • Focus on integrating vulnerability assessment into policies and decision-making • Includes contributions from leading academics in the field.

Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2017 in the subject Environmental Sciences, Fiji National University (College of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry Fiji National University), language: English, abstract: Fiji Islands are among the most dynamic economies in the South Pacific, with rapid changes on infrastructure and industrial developments, tourism and commercial agriculture; even though they often come alongside environmental impacts on endemic biota and ecosystems that are not well understood, not much is invested on research to plan a sustainable use of land. Parallel unsolved concerns are land tenure issues in which ancestral community ownership coexists with modern markets; tensions over land leases between ethnical groups and high population growth trigger land use intensification, and rise of emigrations, of landlessness, of unemployment and finally of poverty. Therefore, it is of a national interest to asses these trends for long term sustainable land use planning; even nearly 3500 years ago a record of regulations aimed to achieve sustainability and equality: "3 ...for six years you may plant crops inyour fields, prune your vineyards, and gather what they produce. 4 But during the seventh year, you must let the land rest. 8 Count seven of these years seven times for a total of 49 years... during that time there will be seven ·years of rest 9 and proclaim liberty to everyone living in the land... everyone is to return to their own property" (Leviti...

Stefan Hasenauer Remote Sensing and the Kyoto Protocol

The Kyoto Protocol to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (Kyoto Protocol) is one of the most outstanding and ambitious environmental programmes so far, established for reducing greenhouse gases to prevent anthropogenic climate change. Changes in land-use and forestry have a great impact on the greenhouse gas balance, and participating countries are obliged to monitor and report the status of their inventories. Remote sensing is, amongst others, a valuable technique for reporting in the sector 'Land Use, Land-Use Change and Forestry' (LULUCF). The author introduces the subject by explaining basic terms and definitions of the Kyoto Protocol, and examines the usage of remote sensing in forest inventories, with a special emphasis on the situation in Austria. After an in-depth review of official documentation of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), like 'The Good Practice Guidance for Land Use, Land-Use Change and Forestry', the author presents recent and future trends in remote sensing. This book will be of interest to researchers and practitioners in the field of remote sensing, geography, forestry, and environmental sciences.

Bulto Teshome Daba Soil Chemical Fertility in Relation to Land Use and Landscape Position

Now a day the soil fertility of high land areas, where most of the agricultural activities have been done at the escarpments of the landscape, has been decreased. These in turn decrease the productivity of land because of the removal of soil and nutrient by erosion. Therefore the use of fertilizer has increased to compensate the removed nutrients through erosion. The change in land use is also another factor to increase or decrease the fertility of the land. The application of the same fertilizer rate at each landscape position lead us wastage or inefficient. This book, therefore, provides the variability of soil chemical fertility among different land use and landscape position, as well as soil deterioration indices. The analysis help some light on this variability, and especially useful to professionals like researchers, agriculture experts and instructors etc working in areas of soil fertility and decision makers who may use fertilizer in the high land areas or any else.

In North America, concepts of Historical Range of Variability are being employed in land-management planning for properties of private organizations and multiple government agencies. The National Park Service, U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, Bureau of Land Management, U.S. Forest Service, and The Nature Conservancy all include elements of historical ecology in their planning processes. Similar approaches are part of land management and conservation in Europe and Australia. Each of these user groups must struggle with the added complication of rapid climate change, rapid land-use change, and technical issues in order to employ historical ecology effectively. Historical Environmental Variation in Conservation and Natural Resource Management explores the utility of historical ecology in a management and conservation context and the development of concepts related to understanding future ranges of variability. It provides guidance and insights to all those entrusted with managing and conserving natural resources: land-use planners, ecologists, fire scientists, natural resource policy makers, conservation biologists, refuge and preserve managers, and field practitioners. The book will be particularly timely as science-based management is once again emphasized in United States federal land management and as an understanding of the potential effects of climate change becomes more widespread among resource managers. Master's Thesis from the year 2009 in the subject Sociology - Culture, Technology, Peoples / Nations, grade: 85.0%, Erasmus University Rotterdam, course: Rural Livelihoods and Global Change, language: English, abstract: This paper explores the question of how the land tenure system in the North West Region of Cameroon affects rural farmers‟ access to the National Support Program to the Maize Sub-Sector (NSPMS) in Cameroon. It does this by confronting NSPMS‟s assumptions about farmers‟ access to land with, the land tenure question existing in the Region. The paper uses an analytical framework which links land tenure institutions, processes of groupformation and social exclusion to challenge these assumptions. The paper argues that, following the nature of the African land question, traditional chiefs do not mainly administer land for the benefit of their subjects in an era of increased land commoditization. Traditional land administration in this era is highly knitted into economic and social relations of power and status which thus suggest high risks of discrimination and exclusion. As such, the paper seeks to add to the knowledge of how mechanisms of social exclusion could be rooted in land tenure institutions but go unnoticed and, continue to further nurture other forms of disadvantage, inequality, exclusion and great vulnerability to acute poverty. The findings of this research suggest disparities between; expectations of NSPMS in their grant making assumptions and, fie...

Disaster management requires spatial information as a backbone of preparedness and mitigation process. In that context, an assessment of landslide susceptibility becomes essential in an area that is prone to landslide due to its geographical condition. In this study, three different methods were applied to examine landslide susceptibility in that area: heuristic, statistical logistic regression and Artificial Neural Network (ANN). Heuristic method is a knowledge-based approach whereas the latter two are categorized as data-driven methods due to the involvement of landslide inventory in their analysis. Eight site-specific available and commonly used landslide influencing factors (slope, aspect, topographical shape, curvature, lithology, land use, distance to road and distance to river) were preprocessed in a GIS environment and then analyzed using statistical and GIS tools to understand the relationship and significance of each to landslide occurrence, and to generate landslide susceptibility maps.

Article 27 of the Mexican Agrarian Law (1992) modified property rights in land with the goal of modernizing and developing the agrarian sector. In order to determine changes in property rights, formal and informal property rights institutions were compared prior to and following the granting of legal rights in land to women in 1971 and the alienation of ejido land in 1992 subsequent to Article 27. Productive spaces and forests (k'ax) supply food and products needed for survival in the region, as well as natural resources with market potential. Productive spaces, their users, and their purposes are multiple. The relationships between productive spaces, the family and the ejido are dynamic, and are constantly constructed, maintained and negotiated. Property rights in the ejido of Xmaben changed little following the Agrarian Land Reform provisions contained in Article 27. Women and men continue working in a complementary manner while assuring the sustainable use of their forests. The ejido resisted parcelization, ownership continues under a communal regime, and natural resource management exhibits an orientation to conservation and sustainability.

American higher education needs a major reframing of student learning outcomes assessment Dynamic changes are underway in American higher education. New providers, emerging technologies, cost concerns, student debt, and nagging doubts about quality all call out the need for institutions to show evidence of student learning. From scholars at the National Institute for Learning Outcomes Assessment (NILOA), Using Evidence of Student Learning to Improve Higher Education presents a reframed conception and approach to student learning outcomes assessment. The authors explain why it is counterproductive to view collecting and using evidence of student accomplishment as primarily a compliance activity. Today's circumstances demand a fresh and more strategic approach to the processes by which evidence about student learning is obtained and used to inform efforts to improve teaching, learning, and decision-making. Whether you're in the classroom, an administrative office, or on an assessment committee, data about what students know and are able to do are critical for guiding changes that are needed in institutional policies and practices to improve student learning and success. Use this book to: Understand how and why student learning outcomes assessment can enhance student accomplishment and increase institutional effectiveness Shift the view of assessment from being externally driven to internally motivated Learn how assessment results can help inform decision-making Use assessment data to manage change and improve student success Gauging student learning is necessary if institutions are to prepare students to meet the 21st century needs of employers and live an economically independent, civically responsible life. For assessment professionals and educational leaders, Using Evidence of Student Learning to Improve Higher Education offers both a compelling rationale and practical advice for making student learning outcomes assessment more effective and efficient.

Milla Budiarto Your Land Is My Land

Indonesia is the world's largest archipelagic country comprised of over 17,000 islands with more than 300 ethnic groups and more than 250 different ethnic languages spoken. Due to its land mass size and multifaceted culture, land policy in this country has been ineffective and inadequate in addressing some of the land affairs. One of the indicators of effective land policy is land tenure security, where land dispute incidence is a function of it. Given that the government has very minimal guarantee for land tenure security in this nation, land disputes are inevitable and very common. By the end of 2008, there are roughly 7,491 land dispute cases flooding the nation. Using Kingdon's Multiple Stream Model as its main conceptual model, this research identified the primary factors that have influenced the effectiveness of land policy, defined in terms of land disputes. The study examined the above factors on the example of Tangerang Municipality, a large municipality that is home of hundreds of industrial and manufacturing complexes.

There is nothing else.'Naomi, the enigmatic fiddler, arrives in Clachanpluck, bringing her music and the ominous potential of an incomer. The impending sense of catastrophe - global and personal - which haunts this world, finally erupts in violence: trust and love are the casualties. Martina Schöb The Global Biofuel Production and its impact on the Land Tenure of the Rural Poor

Seminar paper from the year 2012 in the subject Ethnology / Cultural Anthropology, grade: 1, University of Luzern (ethnologisches Seminar), course: Land Grabbing, language: English, abstract: The global biofuel production has been rapidly increasing since 2007-08 and with it the new demand for land, which has a strong focus on Africa as it has weak land rights protection. Most foreign investors, who intend to buy land for the biofuel production take advantage of the lack of proper property rights in several African countries. Therefore, many of the rural poor, who depend on land for their living, suffer from expulsion or dispossession. In summary, it can be said that the formalization of land titles only serves the poor, when secondary rights as for example for women, herders or migrants, are respected by the state or the foreign investors when allocating, buying or leasing land. In addition, during the processes of allocating, buying or leasing land, the state as well as the foreign investor should give whole local communities (not only local elites) the possibility to negotiate over the future use of the land they tilled for years. From the four land tenure reforms outlined, where land based wealth and power transfers occurs, the two best possible solutions, which serve the poor, would be the redistribution and the distribution of land. In my opinion, the preferable one of this two solutions is distribution as this solution is less conflict-prone. In the present paper two c...

Meshesha Derege Soil Erosion and Sediment Yield Modelling

Environmental degradation has been recognized as high impact physical and social problem that could lead to worldwide environmental catastrophe. Evaluation of environmental degradation and natural resource depletion is therefore essential for the long-term management of natural resources and the nourishment of livelihoods that are dependent on them. The general focus of this book is to provide scientific based information and understanding about the interaction between Land use and Cover Change (LUCC), soil erosion, and sediment yield. Thereby, to propose options or scenarios for sustainable use of land and water resources. To this end, the Central Rift Valley of Ethiopia (CRV), which is located in the southern part of the country and has faced a serious land use and cover change and erosion damage, was taken as a model. This scientific result could generally be used as a tool in the environment rehabilitation program, given that, if they can be properly implemented they can significantly reduce the existing soil loss amount from the region and could create sustainable ecosystem in the future.

This paper argues that the dispute over land in Acholi is a result of the incongruity based on principles between the modern state and traditional Acholi land institution, which work parallel to each other hence producing confusions that trigger conflict.

Waithera Mwangi Naomi Land Adjudication and Consolidation Processess in Kenya

The question of absolute ownership of land in Kenya has remained a thorny issue, revolving around complex laws and lengthy procedures of adjudication, consolidation and registration of land. Land ownership has remained an elusive dream for many Kenyans owing to unjust acquisition of land by British colonial settlers in the early 19th century. In spite of Kenya attaining independence in 1963, landlessness has continued to persist on a large scale with recurrent land disputes among individuals and between communities being reported. This project examined the adjudication and consolidation processes undertaken in Kenya since independence with the enactment of individual tenure of indigenous land as well as the redistribution of the former 'white highlands' to Africans of Kenyan descent. Koibatek District within Rift Valley Province was identified as the case study for review, where completed and ongoing adjudication exercises were studied in Chebaran and Aram Kindonin areas respectively. The report also highlights problems and concerns raised by Officers involved in the exercise and residents within the concerned adjudication sections & suggests various recommendations.

Land is one of the most important natural resources that has to be managed properly. Like most developing countries, in Ethiopia, land degradation was a chronic problem for centuries. Though there are several factors that cause land degradation in the country, tenure insecurity among farmers has a lion share. For addressing this problem, the government has emphasized it's plan on land registration and certification program. However, there are several arguments regarding whether land titling ensures tenure security and assures land management or not. This book is therefore helpful to know about the role of land registration and certification program for sustainable land management.

Explores methods for the representation and treatment of uncertainty in risk assessment In providing guidance for practical decision-making situations concerning high-consequence technologies (e.g., nuclear, oil and gas, transport, etc.), the theories and methods studied in Uncertainty in Risk Assessment have wide-ranging applications from engineering and medicine to environmental impacts and natural disasters, security, and financial risk management. The main focus, however, is on engineering applications. While requiring some fundamental background in risk assessment, as well as a basic knowledge of probability theory and statistics, Uncertainty in Risk Assessment can be read profitably by a broad audience of professionals in the field, including researchers and graduate students on courses within risk analysis, statistics, engineering, and the physical sciences. Uncertainty in Risk Assessment: Illustrates the need for seeing beyond probability to represent uncertainties in risk assessment contexts. Provides simple explanations (supported by straightforward numerical examples) of the meaning of different types of probabilities, including interval probabilities, and the fundamentals of possibility theory and evidence theory. Offers guidance on when to use probability and when to use an alternative representation of uncertainty. Presents and discusses methods for the representation and characterization of uncertainty in risk assessment. Uses examples to clearly illustrate ideas and concepts.

The only modern guide to interpreting and writing real property descriptions for surveyors Technical land information is no longer the exclusive domain of professional surveyors. The Internet now houses a multitude of resources that nontechnical professionals—such as attorneys and realtors—access and implement on a daily basis. However, these professionals are trained in aspects of law and commerce that do not provide the proper education and experience to interpret and evaluate their land boundary information discoveries correctly. As a result, their analysis is often erroneous and the data misapplied—ultimately leading to confusion and costly litigation. Professional Surveyors and Real Property Descriptions attempts to bridge the ever-widening gap between the users of land boundary information and the land surveyors who produce it. An expert team of authors integrates the historic and legal background of real property interests with fundamental concepts of the surveying profession in a manner accessible for average readers. These provide the basics for both properly comprehending older descriptions and competently constructing complete and modern real property descriptions that foster better communication. Highlights in this book include: An in-depth exploration of historic descriptions and how to read them Coverage of the widely accepted ALTA/ACSM Land Boundary Survey standards and associated property descriptions A diverse collection of examples and practice scenarios An overview of the latest issues related to the use of GPS and GIS Written in easy-to-understand language, this practical resource assists nontechnical professionals in understanding exactly what a surveyor does and does not do, and serves as a valuable tool for obtaining the most satisfactory, accurate, and complete real property descriptions.

Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 1991 in the subject Geography / Earth Science - Demographics, Urban Management, Planning, University of London (Bartlett School of Architecture and Planning), course: Development Planning Unit, language: English, abstract: For many people in most of the developing countries which are experiencing rapid urbanisation, the habitat conditions are totally unsatisfactory. It is now widely accepted that one of the major reasons for such a situation 1s the poor management of land. The focus of this paper will be on this issue of urban land in the production of housing in developing countries. In this context the role of land, as the most central human settlement issue, will be analysed by looking at different land tenure concepts and the potential solutions they contain for equitable land allocation strategies. The role of tenure can probably best be illustrated by the importance of political and social problems connected with urban landownership. To mention just a few: urban unrest is often based on landlord-tenant conflicts; urban planning is frequently obstructed by powerful landowners and/or politicians; and there is often rampant corruption in relation to urban land questions and urban planning. The public, as well as the private sector each have an important role to play in the provision of affordable serviced and well-located plots for housing the majority of low-income urban inhabitants. Abstracts from the Land Records of Dorchester County Maryland often reveal names of wives, sons, daughters, and other relationships. Included with the deeds are abstracts of land commissions that re-established the boundaries of land tracts at the request of a new owner. These hearings consisted of depositions of persons knowledgeable of the original markers. The individuals gave not only their knowledge of the history of the boundary markers of the tract of land in question but their own ages, and other bits of information. For research of families in Dorchester County, which has such a dearth of early material, the land records are a must. Fortunately, the abstracts were done with care and a keen knowledge of the records. Each volume is indexed.

Noescher Regina Impacts of the anthropogenic use of floodplains on the flood runoff

Worldwide, floodplains of rivers are under strong pressure due to ongoing development of settlement, commercial, industrial and traffic areas. In the context of integrated flood risk management this trend implicates various adverse consequences, since firstly natural flood storage volume is reduced (thus leading to accelerated and increased flood peaks further downstream) and secondly since flood risk is magnified in these newly developed areas due to the accumulation of high-valuable goods. Therefore, in this work, the change of land use along the Tyrolean Inn was examined. The last 60 years, from 1950 to 2010 were investigated quantitatively with the help of ortho pictures, aerial photographs and the area zoning plan. For investigating historical changes, a qualitative analysis of morphological changes and settlement development was performed. Therefore, the three Landesaufnahmen from 1800, 1820 and 1880 were used. The aim was to detect if there is a change in flood discharge behavior due to the change of land use.

Metivier Kathryn Modeling Open Space Acquisition in Boulder, Colorado

Purchasing land for open space use is crucial for municipalities that are concerned with conserving land and mitigating urban sprawl. Land-use modeling measures the ecological vs. economic trade-off. This book develops a land-use modeling system termed Modeling Open Space Acquisition (MOSA) that quantifies the ecological value of land targeted for open space acquisition. MOSA is designed as a decision support tool for local policymakers to identify ecologically rich parcels that can be targeted by using a multi-criteria model. Each parcel in the study area (Boulder, Colorado) is ranked by weighted criteria generated from a variety of public data sources. The weighted criteria include wildlife habitat, agricultural lands, historical sites, recreation corridors, vegetative biodiversity, riparian wetlands, parcel proximity, and parcel size. MOSA provides supplemental evidence to quantifying, targeting, and prioritizing parcel acquisition for preservation. Governing agencies can benefit from land-use modeling where parcel acquisition is evaluated from a scientific classification of natural resource capital over a parcel's economic value alone.

MANSEL G. BLACKFORD Columbus, Ohio. Two Centuries of Business and Environmental Change

Columbus, Ohio: Two Centuries of Business and Environmental Change examines how a major midwestern city developed economically, spatially, and socially, and what the environmental consequences have been, from its founding in 1812 to near the present day. The book analyzes Columbus's evolution from an isolated frontier village to a modern metropolis, one of the few thriving cities in the Midwest. No single factor explains the history of Columbus, but the implementation of certain water-use and land-use policies, and interactions among those policies, reveal much about the success of the city. Precisely because they lived in a midsize, midwestern city, Columbus residents could learn from the earlier experiences of their counterparts in older, larger coastal metropolises, and then go beyond them. Not having large sunk costs in pre-existing water systems, Columbus residents could, for instance, develop new, world-class, state-of-the-art methods for treating water and sewage, steps essential for urban expansion. Columbus, Ohio explores how city residents approached urban challenges-especially economic and environmental ones-and how they solved them. Columbus, Ohio: Two Centuries of Business and Environmental Change concludes that scholars and policy makers need to pay much more attention to environmental issues in the shaping of cities, and that they need to look more closely at what midwestern metropolises accomplished, as opposed to simply examining coastal cities.

Two men, Judge Roy Bean and a Texas Ranger named Mason Crenshaw, set out trying to tame this lawless land. Will their efforts succeed, or will this stretch of land always remain lawless? A woman named Casey McRae leaves St. Louis with her father and his new bride to search for treasure rumored to be hidden in an old Spanish mission located in the untamed land west of the Pecos River.
