Master's Thesis from the year 2014 in the subject Computer Science - Software, , course: Image Processing, language: English, abstract: In this thesis various methods for lossless compression of source image data are analyzed and discussed. The main focus in this work is lossless compression algorithms based on context modeling using tree structure.We are going to compare CALIC, GCT-I algorithms to theJPEG2000 standard algorithm which will be considered the reference of comparison.This work includes research on how to modify CALIC algorithm in continuous-tone mode by truncating tails of the error histogram which may lead to improve CALIC compression performance.Also, we are going to propose a modification to CALIC in binarymode by eliminating error feedback mechanism. As when any pixel to be encoded has a different grey level than any of the neighboring pixels, CALIC triggers an escape sequence that switches the algorithm from binary mode to continuous-tone mode. Which means in this case the pixel will be treated as if it was in continuous-tone region. This minor modification should improve CALIC performance in binary images.Finally, we are going to discuss the GCT-I on medical images and compare results to the JPEG2000 standard.

A new embedded, block-based, wavelet transform coding algorithm of low complexity is developed for hyperspectral image compression: Three-Dimensional Set Partitioned Embedded bloCK (3D-SPECK). 3D-SPECK efficiently encodes 3D volumetric hyperspectral image data by exploiting the dependencies in all dimensions. It can generate either SNR scalable or resolution scalable embedded bitstreams. It can also generate ROI retrievable bitstreams.This book introduces 3D-SPECK and describes its technical details. It is demonstrated that 3D-SPECK has excellent performance on hyperspectral image compression.

Data compression is one of the important topics in computer science that is concerned in reducing the size of data. There are many techniques for data compression used for specific type(s) of data and some other used for general purpose. In this research, the RGB image has been transformed into YIQ color transform, then the I&Q band have been sampled down in order to get effective compression. To break the long encoding time of FIC, many enhanced methods are applied to traditional FIC based on using zero-mean method, in which a mean of range block is used instead of offset parameter which simplify and speed up the encoding time; Also reduce a domain pool by filtration a domain pool from those block with high entropy value, in addition to discard domain blocks which have some distance ratio from matching process. Another speeding up technique is proposed in this research based on suggesting symmetry predictor to reduce isometric trails from 8 to 1 trail. The work proves to have a good result in compression ratio and quality of reconstructed image.

We explore various optimization problems which appear in computer vision and image processing. By exploiting the geometric structure of the underlying search spaces, we develop more efficient and robust ways to find optimal solutions. We present the Nelder-Mead algorithms on Lie groups and describe its application to medical image registration. A widely used approach to image registration involves finding the transformation that maximizes the mutual information between two images, with the transformation restricted to be either rigid-body (i.e., belonging to SE(3)) or volume-preserving (i.e., belonging to SL(3)). We present coordinate-invariant, geometric versions of the Nelder-Mead optimization algorithm on the transformation groups SL(3), SE(3), and its various subgroups, that are applicable to a wide class of image registration problems. Because the algorithms respect the geometric structure of the underlying transformation groups, they are numerically more stable, and exhibit better convergence properties than existing local coordinate-based algorithms. Experimental results demonstrate the improved convergence properties of our geometrics algorithm.

Multiview autostereoscopic displays (MADs) make it possible to view video content in 3D without wearing special glasses, and such displays have recently become available. The main problem of MADs is that they require several (typically 8 or 9) views, while most of the 3D video content is in stereoscopic 3D today. To bridge this content-display gap, the research community started to devise automatic multiview synthesis (MVS) methods. Common MVS methods are based on depth-image-based rendering, where a dense depth map of the scene is used to reproject the image to new viewpoints. Although physically correct, this approach requires accurate depth maps and additional inpainting steps. Our work uses an alternative conversion concept based on image domain warping (IDW) which has been successfully applied to related problems such as aspect ratio retargeting for streaming video, and dispa- rity remapping for depth adjustments in stereoscopic 3D content. IDW shows promising performance in this context as it only requires robust, sparse point- correspondences and no inpainting steps. However, MVS, using IDW as well as alternative approaches, is computationally demanding and requires realtime processing - yet such methods should be portable to end-user and even mobile devices to develop their full potential. To this end, this thesis investigates efficient algorithms and hardware architectures for a variety of subproblems arising in the MVS pipeline.

With the growth in multimedia technology, demand for high speed real time image compression system has also increased. JPEG 2000 still image compression standard is developed to cater such application requirements. It offers numerous advantages over traditional JPEG standard. The key algorithms adopted in this standard are discrete wavelet transform (DWT) and embedded block coding with optimized truncation (EBCOT). Both the algorithms are computation intensive and when implemented on general purpose processor, they are unsuitable for real time applications. Therefore, to meet the timing constraints imposed by the real time systems dedicated VLSI implementation of these algorithms is imperative. EBCOT is a two-tier coder. Tier-1 is a context based adaptive arithmetic coder and Tier-2 performs layered bit stream formation. Tier-1 is further partitioned into block coder and MQ coder. To a novice, it is difficult to grasp the operating principle of the block coder and hence it is difficult to realize high speed JPEG 2000 architecture. The author has made an attempt to demystify these concepts and presented a simplified VLSI architecture of the block coder in this book.
