Despite efforts of more than centuries, turbulence phenomena is categorized as an unsolved problem. Turbulence is part of everyday's life. The majority of flows of industrial and technological applications are turbulent; natural flows are invariably so. There are many important and interesting physical phenomena which are connected with turbulent flows. Turbulence is observed in natural and engineering applications such as in weather prediction, air pollution, water pollution, aerodynamics and heat exchangers. This work considers an accurate and reliable solutions of turbulent flows. It is concerned with one of the most promising approaches to the numerical simulation of turbulent flows, the subgrid eddy viscosity models. We analyze both continuous and discontinuous finite element approximation of the new subgrid eddy viscosity model. This approach has the advantage that the diffusivity is introduced only on the small scales of the flow. Numerical test shows the new stabilization technique is robust and efficient in solving Navier-Stokes equations for a wide range of Reynolds numbers.

The enclosure is heated steadily from below and cooled at the top while the rest of the side-walls are treated to be adiabatic. The fluid is constantly passed through a fixed inlet and an outlet on the opposite side. The standard k-e model is applied to cater for the turbulent kinetic energy and its rate of dissipation. Finite difference method was applied to the equations and they were iteratively solved to analyze the effects of magnetic field on velocity, temperature distribution and heat transfer within the enclosure.

When simulating turbulent flows using Large-Eddy Simulations (LES) or Direct Numerical Simulations (DNS), imposing correct instantaneous flow quantities at the inflow boundary is a challenge. Acceleration is of primal relevance in Fluid Mechanics (it shows the effect of the combination of the forces on a fluid) but only few Lagrangian measures of it can be found in literature. Turbulence has applications in almost every fields of environmental, industrial and civil engineering but, so far, is the last field of classical Mechanics not completely understood. This work describes Particle Tracking Velocimetry and Accelerometry (PTVA), a self-adaptive method able to extract accurate Lagrangian measures of velocity and acceleration, and its applications to electromagnetically forced quasi-two- dimensional turbulent-like flows (whose main targets are to study turbulence and to control the flow to achieve efficient mixing). Turbulent-like properties of these flows are shown, as well as measures of the fields of velocity, acceleration and Navier-Stokes equations' terms. Zero acceleration points and efficient mixing are described and characterized. This work should be useful to students, engineers and scientists working in the field of environmental, industrial and engineering Fluid Mechanics, especially in the field of turbulence.

Successive Association Agreements between the EU and its Mediterranean Partner Countries (MPCs) aimed mostly at fostering trade liberalization. The analysis of agricultural trade flows between both areas has been traditionally approached according to geographical proximity and political relations via quantitative trade models. Available evidence reveals serious difficulties to conduct thorough analysis with the mentioned models. An alternative analytical avenue would be the use of qualitative approaches linked to Global Value Chain analysis. This book focuses on analyzing the buyer side of the value chains for the main agricultural products sourced from MPCs to the EU, taking Spain as a representative case. The analysis provides primary information for better profiling the opportunities and constraints of these flows, and deriving implications to improve the efficiency of the target value chains. No previous references about the topic investigated were found in the specialized literature, which makes this research probably the first attempt to analyze Euro-Mediterranean agricultural trade dynamics using the value chain approach from the buyer market perspective.

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2017 in the subject Business economics - Investment and Finance, grade: 1.3, University of Frankfurt (Main), language: English, abstract: This bachelor thesis investigates different determinants for absolute and relative fund flows in socially responsible investment (SRI) funds and conventional funds on the German Market. My multivariate analyses study the flow performance relationship, but also incorporate persistence in flows, expenses and typical fund characteristics such as age, total net assets and number of share classes. I find a high dependency of flows on prior returns from funds known as a return chasing behaviour. My model shows different flow-performance relations depending on the kind of sustainability fund and how the perception of investors changed over time towards being more sensitive regarding SRI criteria. Most importantly there exists a strong momentum effect for funds shown with persistent flows in Germany over different periods of time.

The presence of oriented features in images often conveys important information about the scene or the objects contained; the analysis of oriented patterns is an important task in the general framework of image understanding. As in many other applications of computer vision, the general framework for the understanding of oriented features in images can be divided into low- and high-level analysis. In the context of the study of oriented features, low-level analysis includes the detection of oriented features in images; a measure of the local magnitude and orientation of oriented features over the entire region of analysis in the image is called the orientation field. High-level analysis relates to the discovery of patterns in the orientation field, usually by associating the structure perceived in the orientation field with a geometrical model. This book presents an analysis of several important methods for the detection of oriented features in images, and a discussion of the phase portrait method for high-level analysis of orientation fields.
