In hot and humid areas, the liquid desiccant air-conditioning systems based on evaporative cooling was proposed as a promising invention.This system overcomes the difficulty of evaporative cooler increased humidity with cooling, which makes it unsuitable for hot and humid climates, by dehumidifying the air first and then cooling it inside an evaporative cooler with water. The heating effect of dehumidification process is compensated by cooling water circulation. The use of dehumidifier in conjunction with an evaporative cooler increases the efficiency of the system. Beside the several well-known thermal driven cooling processes like Absorption, Adsorption Chillers and Desiccant Cooling Systems, this study introduces a new cooling process.This novel process uses the endothermal enthalpy of solution while dissolving the respective salt in water. Using the example of ammonium nitrate dissolved in water, algebraic functions for the vapor pressure and the enthalpy of this solution are formulated. Several equipment variations are proposed, stationary balanced and calculated. Starting with a Coefficient of Performance (COP) of 0.04 heat recovery installations and the use of a ten stage flash evaporator improve the COP up to 0.24.

The authors have reviewed the present status of solar powered absorption systems. The book presents two cases studies considered: Netcare Moot Hospital system and the Vodacom World system. TRNSYS simulations are carried out for both systems and their results presented. A complete system performance analysis will be carried for each system and the main performance indicators calculated. The book presents the system performance results obtained during the operation of the systems is presented and analyzed. The Moot system was commissioned in October 2009 and was in operation up until November 2011 when it was decommissioned where as the Vodafone Ste Solutions Innovation Center system was commissioned in November 2011 and is still operational. An economic analysis has been carried out for the Vodafone system and the annuity calculated and the cost per unit of cold produced found. Comparison of simulation results and the recorded system performance data compared and the discrepancies are explained. The main discrepancies are due to the weather data and the differences between the data sets used are explained in depth. The main conclusions of this study are summarized.

Increasing urbanization throughout the world, the depletion of fossil fuels and concerns about global warming have transformed the city into a physical problem of prime importance.
