Bachelor Thesis from the year 2014 in the subject Psychology - Clinic and Health Psychology, Abnormal Psychology, grade: B, University of Derby, language: English, abstract: Psycho-education and familiarity with severe mental illness arbitrate change in public stigma of severe mental illness. A survey study exploring the attributions of dangerousness and avoidance from people with severe mental illness was carried out. The study employed opportunity sampling and sixty students (m=30; f=30) half of which were students of Psychology and the other half were students of MBA. The students' familiarity with severe mental illness, the perception of dangerousness and the desire to avoid from persons with severe mental illness were gathered via a self-administered electronic survey. More females than males showed a heightened level of fear and avoidance from persons with severe mental illness. However, students with a psychology background showed more desire for social inclusion and lower perception of dangerousness than the MBA. Similarly, students with the high level of familiarity showed less fear and more tolerance towards persons with severe mental illness than students with low level of familiarity, which supported the earlier findings.

Although mental illness has not been eradicated, the move to equate mental illness with a physical legitimate illness has resulted in greater understanding on many aspects as to the particular course of the disease. In spite of the difficulties that remain, mental health treatment has come a long way.Faith in the Field provides a historic, sociological, theological, and research-based perspective on the treatment and study on mental health. It points out the challenges within the field and confronts the political, socioeconomic, theological, scientific, and cultural adversities facing advances in mental health treatment. It also attempts to help eliminate the stigma associated with mental illness and those who suffer from it. Combining approaches from psychiatry, psychology, sociology, theology, and nursing, this study aims for a middle ground upon which to build a levee that might ameliorate existing barriers to treatment. Author Sabas Hernan Flores Whittaker, building on his thirty-year career in health care, offers a unique outlook on this timely topic. This multidisciplinary study considers numerous aspects of mental health treatment from various perspectives, seeking a unified approach that could benefit all.

People with mental illness have been negatively treated, stereotyped and rejected due to the societal notions and misconceptions about mental illness. Recent studies claim that the dangerousness criterion of the involuntary commitment statute accounts for psychiatric stereotyping and discrimination despite improved treatments and better prognosis for mental illness. The purpose of this study was to investigate the cultural conceptions of mental illness within an African culture residing in Botswana versus the same conceptions within an American culture residing in Miami, Florida. This was achieved by examining the current cultural conceptions of mental illness within each culture. We explored the cultural differences of individuals’ perceptions of involuntary hospitalization of people with mental disorders as specified by the mandatory commitment statutes from each culture.

Peter Tyrer Models for Mental Disorder

4148.8 руб.
Models for Mental Disorder, first published in 1987, anticipated the move towards integration of psychiatric services into multidisciplinary teams (doctor, psychologist, nurse, social worker, etc) and the need to bring together the different philosophies of mental illness. Peter Tyrer has identified four different models of mental disorder that are relevant to clinical practice: the disease, psychodynamic, cognitive-behavioural and social models. Each model is described and reviewed, with reference to case studies and illustrations, to show how it relates to mental health disorders and can be used to interpret and manage these disorders. The book has been widely read and is often used for training purposes so that each professional can understand and appreciate that differences in viewpoint are often a consequence of one or more models being used in a different way rather than a fundamental schism in approach. Since the fourth edition was published in 2005, the disciplines of mental health have moved even closer together with the growth of assertive outreach and more integrated community teams. This, combined with the greater awareness of mental health among users of services, which leads to more penetrating and informed questions at interviews with professionals, has emphasized the need for a wider understanding of these models. • The only book to describe the models framing mental health diagnosis and management • A great review for those wanting a better grasp of psychiatric disorders and for integration of concepts for treatment planning • New information on formal classifi cations of mental disorder • New information on mindfulness and mentalization regarding the dynamic model • Clearly written in a style which includes some humour and a conversational presentation – a joy to read for the beginner and more experienced practitioner alike • Features a teaching exercise for use when training students in the various models

Human rights of people with mental disabilities have become a subject of interest of international law only very recently. Despite intensive development in the last years, the implementation of these rights often remains unsatisfactory due to the characteristic vulnerability of persons with mental disabilities, especially when they are deprived of liberty. This book examines the development and contemporary approach of international human rights law towards persons with disabilities in the light of theoretical models of disability. It continues with evaluating the compatibility of Czech law and practice concerning the right to liberty of mentally ill persons with the principles established by the European Court of Human Rights. Conclusions drawn from these two parts suggest how the above mentioned principles as well as relevant Czech law and practice may be improved in order to advance the human rights of persons with mental disabilities. This analysis is a useful resource for professionals and policy makers in the fields of law, social work and psychiatry, as well as for persons with mental disabilities themselves.

Mental Illness in Dogs: A Guide for Trainers is directed to both new and experienced dog trainers and behavior consultants. The idea that dogs can be afflicted with mental illness is fairly new but growing. Author, Linda Scroggins had years of experience working with dogs with behavior issues when a little yellow dog named Tom entered her life and home. Living with a dog who had been diagnosed with mental illness was her wakeup call to the challenges families sharing their lives with these dogs face each day. The author's journey and eventual loss was the catalyst to developing a plan for all dog trainers who may come into contact with these special dogs. This book reviews the current methods for approaching treatment for these dogs by examining the humane hierarchies currently provided by professional organizations. The book highlights those dogs whose needs may cause them to fall outside the hierarchy and how proceeding with current behavior modification methods may harm dogs or worsen their illness. Mental Illness in Dogs: A Guide for Trainers suggests a new approach that focuses on a collaborative process between the dog trainer and other professionals caring for the dog. Author_Bio: Linda Scroggins, RN, MSN, CBCC-KA, CPDT-KA, is a certified, professional, canine behavior consultant and dog trainer with over 10 years of experience. This book details the development of a theory to explain the decisions and actions taken by people with mental illness with regard to employment. In-depth interviews were conducted with users of psychiatric services. Some participants were employed, others were seeking employment, while others were not engaged in employment-related activities. The study found that all participants were engaged in a process of negotiating an appropriate vocational place. This process is cyclical, ongoing and dynamic, as individuals' views and circumstances change. The findings present a challenge to policy and practice in which a successful outcome is defined as obtaining and maintaining a paid position in the workforce. They provide a framework for practitioners, policy makers and researchers to understand the decisions made by people with mental illness and their actions in relation to employment. Findings support the notion that substantially increasing employment rates for people with mental illness will require change at a number of levels of society and will not be achieved by merely putting greater pressure on people with mental illness to work.

The issue of mental health remains surrounded by stigma and misunderstanding. The problem of mental illness requires greater attention as a major twenty-first-century public health challenge. Among millions of affected Americans, fewer than half get help even though 80 to 90 percent of mental disorders are treatable using medication and other therapies. These disorders take an enormous toll on individuals and families, as well as the society. The Quick Survival Guide for Mood Diso...

Mental Illness in Popular Media. Essays on the Representation of Disorders

Whether in movies, cartoons, commercials, or even fast food marketing, psychology and mental illness remain pervasive in popular culture. In this collection of new essays, scholars from a range of fields explore representations of mental illness and disabilities across various media of popular culture. Contributors address how forms of psychiatric disorder have been addressed in film, on stage, and in literature, how popular culture genres are utilized to communicate often confusing and conflicted relationships with the mentally ill, and how popular cultures around the world reflect mental illness and disability. Analyses of sources as disparate as the Batman films, Broadway musicals and Nigerian home movies reveal how definitions of mental illness, mental health, and of psychology itself intersect with discourses on race, gender, law, capitalism, and globalization. Instructors considering this book for use in a course may request an examination copy here.

This book mainly focuses on issues of diagnosis, identification of factors associated with mental illness, and approaches to promote mental health in incarcerated people. Due to many factors in prisons that have negative effects on mental health, including: overcrowding, various forms of violence, lack of privacy, lack of meaningful activity, isolation from social networks, and insecurity about future prospects, mental health problems are expected to be more prevalent in prison population than those found in comparable community samples. The empirical research findings reported in this book can contribute some valuable data to the scarcely available study findings on the magnitude of mental disorders in prisons thereby creating awareness concerning the extent to which mental health problems are threatening in prisons. Prevalence data on specific mental disorders have practical importance for two important purposes: First they are required for scientific understanding of a disorder which will enable us to describe association, etiology, natural history and identification of new syndromes. Secondly they are also of vital importance for planning and evaluation of mental health.

Methods: Samples (N=43) were recruited from community base independent service agencies providing case management services for mentally ill people in the western Berlin, Germany catchment area. Separate interviews were conducted with the case managers and their clients diagnosed with schizophrenia (ICD-10). Quantitative measurements were used to establish if there is a relationship between illness insight and the various psychosocial variables assessed in this study. Results: Low illness insight correlated with low levels of social adaptation. Low social adaptation correlated inversely with the case managers' assessment of more social support needs for their client. The clients' low subjective life satisfaction correlated with higher client rated social support needs. The client and case manager rated social support needs correlated strongly. Conclusions: Low illness insight...

Recent events surrounding community mental health care and residential service delivery has resurfaced public concerns and misperceptions regarding the mentally ill individual living in our communities. In January a story entitled ‘Horror city killing: Mental patient centre of probe’, whilst the reporting of this event was both necessary and justified it did nothing to curve the stigma of violent behaviour that has been strongly associated with mental illness. Equally the article did little to improve the public’s perception of community-based mental health and disability support services. It did however raise the question of how well risk assessment and management are carried out by community mental health service providers. In a follow-up article a Councillor called for neighbours to be notified if they are living next door to individuals with mental health concerns. A suggestion which raises considerable ethical concern. This book discusses the ethical considerations required to disclose service user information to neighbours through the use of a case study example.

A radical reappraisal of mental illnessMadness, melancholy, insanity, lunacy, craziness, loco: a dizzying litany of words are used to describe a condition we don’t truly understand.Despite centuries of scientific study, many mental disorders remain untreatable and their causes not understood. The consequences are terrible, both in human suffering and the economic impact of millions of unproductive or destructive people. In assuming that mental illness is a mathematical problem, The Logic of Madness analyses how a human action can be deviant even when rational. It reveals that a person without a genetic or brain abnormality can have an apparent mental disorder that is entirely logical in its structure.Applying this mathematical rigour, creates a theoretical map of the symptoms and causes of mental illness and demonstrates how their origins are in human misunderstanding of emotion. The thesis of The Logic of Madness is that madness is rational and, with the surprising conclusion that it is a logic problem rather than a medical problem, shows that even human actions that are usually deemed mad are logically derived from a particular combination of manipulations of emotional behaviour.A new understanding of the structures behind symptoms of mental illness will hopefully give rise to more targeted therapies that will enable us permanently to escape entrenched patterns of destructiveness.

Partnering for Recovery in Mental Health is a practical guide for conducting person and family-centered recovery planning with individuals with serious mental illnesses and their families. It is derived from the authors’ extensive experience in articulating and implementing recovery-oriented practice and has been tested with roughly 3,000 providers who work in the field as well as with numerous post-graduate trainees in psychology, social work, nursing, and psychiatric rehabilitation. It has consistently received highly favorable evaluations from health care professionals as well as people in recovery from mental illness. This guide represents a new clinical approach to the planning and delivery of mental health care. It emerges from the mental health recovery movement, and has been developed in the process of the efforts to transform systems of care at the local, regional, and national levels to a recovery orientation. It will be an extremely useful tool for planning care within the context of current health care reform efforts and increasingly useful in the future, as systems of care become more person-centered. Consistent with other patient-centered care planning approaches, this book adapts this process specifically to meet the needs of persons with serious mental illnesses and their families. Partnering for Recovery in Mental Health is an invaluable guide for any person involved directly or indirectly in the provision, monitoring, evaluation, or use of community-based mental health care.

In my experiences of being mentally ill over the last thirty-six years, I have found that the perspective of mental health ""clients"" has not been respected. I believe we qualify as a minority group, even while it remains socially acceptable to dislike us, discriminate against us, and exclude us. This book that I've written rightly criticizes maltreatment. It points out practices of mental health practitioners that could be improved upon. At the same time, it acknowledges the existence of mental illness, and the need for treatment. This book focuses on those with schizophrenia. It offers commiseration, and it suggests that we've been underestimated, which is a harmful practice. It outlines the needs of people with mental illness, especially schizophrenia, such as a decent housing situation, caring and respectful treatment of our conditions, and having a purpose in life.

Dulmus and Nisbet have provided the field with an overdue practical resource. Making the recovery planner's best practice individual recovery plan format available on CD-ROM is brilliant, and every agency will want to incorporate it into its EMR. —Linda Rosenberg, President/CEO National Council for Community Behavioral Healthcare, Washington, D.C. «This is a practical and useful tool for case managers and community support workers who are assisting people with serious mental illness toward recovery. Working in a person-centered fashion is what our consumers want and expect, but to date, there have been few published tools with practical value for frontline staff. This resource is timely and relevant.» —Michael F.
