Solid waste management, in addition to technical management, is prioritized in community management where urban population densities have grown to levels that induce solid waste management pressures. A reasonable fraction of municipal solid wastes can be recycled at the source or temporary disposal facilities. Bahir Dar is one of the cities in the country for which solid waste management is a problem. The main objective of the study is to investigate the challenges and prospects of public participation in solid waste management. The study area has nine sub cities. Simple random sampling was used to select two subcities and one zone from each selected subcity. Finally, systematic random sampling was used to select 271 respondents. The survey data was collected by using structured interview. Qualitative data were collected through semi-structured interviews, focus group discussion and observation. Descriptive statistics, ttest and chi-square test were used to determine an association between the dependent variable and the explanatory variables. The ordered logistic regression model was used to identify major factors that affect public participation in solid waste management. The survey result showed that the community can play a great role for better management of solid wastes by putting wastes in containers (38%), participate in waste management activities (34%), pay money for waste collectors (21%) and sorting wastes (7%). This study was conducted in Ambo town at kebele 03. Its objective is to assess the practices and challenges of solid waste management system in the kebele. The study used both primary and secondary data sources. 150 sample households were randomly selected for the household survey. Both qualitative and quantitative methods of data analysis were used. A chi-square statistics was used to assess the relationships of some variables. The result of the study shows that 74% of households burn solid waste in kebele. 52.7% dispose in an open space, 41.3% dump into a river, 33.3% reuse and only 11.3% of households’ compost waste they generate. It can be concluded that the solid waste management system of kebele 03 is very weak. There is no door-to-door solid waste collection service, no solid waste container or dustbin in the kebele and the sorting, reusing and composting practice of households is very weak. As a result, the environment of the kebele is found in bad condition and the majority of households are not satisfied with the existing solid waste management system. In other way , the findings of the research show that most households (84.7%) are willing to pay for service charges.

Solid Waste Management is severely deficient in rural Alaska. The majority of rural communities have unpermitted Class III landfills for waste disposal. These unpermitted landfills are commonly known as open dumps. Open dumps increase human health risks by exposure to solid and hazardous materials, including pathogens from human excreta disposed at dump sites due to lack of adequate solid waste, water and sewer facilities. It explicitly investigates fermentable (organic) waste. Drawing on qualitative research, it argues that households' waste management could be a driver in the achievement of the SDGs. It briefly examines the international context of waste policy establishment and the framework of internationally supported waste project in the Republic of Benin (RB or Benin) in order to demonstrate the importance of socio-cultural factors in the waste sector. Through the lenses of urban political ecology and political ecology of waste theories, it explains how the perception and the treatment of waste in pre-colonial Benin might have changed over time, compared to postcolonial Benin. Inspired by one of the main challenges of the 21st century, achieving a worldwide sustainable development, the paper suggests a different approach of perceiving and treating waste in general and organic waste in particular. It argues that a community-based approach based on cooperatives could be the answer to the waste issue, but could also provide a canvas for the successful and inclusive achievement of the SDGs in Benin.

The general objective of the study is to assess the sustainability of waste management in Glendale. The researcher used case study research design in conjunction with mixed methods research in the study. Both qualitative and quantitative methodologies were used to collect data. The target population for the study consisted of residents of Valley, Westville Park and Sisk, council authorities, Environmental Management Agency (EMA) officer, waste collectors, members of community based organizations (CBOs) and the environmental health officer. The total population was 569 and the sample size was 235. Stratified systematic sampling was employed to select 220 households and the rest except CBO members were picked using purposive sampling. CBO members were selected using convenience sampling. Data were collected using self-administered questionnaire, interviews, focus group discussions (FGDs), observations as well as secondary data. Qualitative data was analysed thematically while quantitative data was analysed using statistical package for social sciences (SPSS) version 16.0 as well as Pearson Chi square test. Hospitals have been existing in one form or the other since time immemorial but there never had been so much concern about the waste generated by them. The implications of hospital wastes are manifold. Now hospital waste management is one of the thrust areas which are drawing attention of health authorities and also the government. Hospital waste management requires commitment from persons at all the levels of the health care facility.The present interventional study was conducted to assess the knowledge, attitude and practice about hospital waste management and to provide training programme on hospital waste management for the staff and to assess the effect of training among the staff of dental teaching hospitals in Bangalore city. For the purpose of conducting this study cluster sampling procedure was adopted, and eight dental teaching hospitals were randomly selected.A specially prepared, and pre-tested structured questionnaire, was given to assess the knowledge, attitude and practices among the staff of dental teaching hospitals and collected personally. In each institution the following elements were studied using checklist i.e segregation, disinfection, disfigurement, containment, colour coding, personal protective equipment, in house transport and disposal. One day training programme on the hospital waste management was organized at each dental college. Yet demand for public services has been growing, service quality has deteriorated or become erratic while in some cases services have completely ceased, particularly in rapidly urbanizing countries. This book offers an evidence based policy menu to municipal planners and environmental protection agencies designing waste management services in less developed countries. Using a household survey of city residents, the book calibrates a multinomial logit model of choice among three alternative waste management services, assuming a random utility technology. While income distribution and other socioeconomic characteristics of residents are important for the choice of waste management service, the finding that low income households do not benefit from publicly funded waste management services cannot be ignored.

Waste management is a big challenge in a developing country like India. Although management processes have been devised for MSW but wastes from chemical industries, including their sludge still have dumping as the only option. I had the opportunity to work for my Master’s thesis at Vapi Waste & Effluent Management Co. Ltd in Gujarat. The work is on the waste to energy aspect of the industrial waste. Main focus of the study was to see if re-activated sludge (RAS) obtained as a waste from the effluent treatment plant can be used to generate methane using an anaerobic digester and further analyse the purity level of methane obtained from it. During the course of the experiment various parameters were studied namely, MLSS, VSS, COD, Alkalinity and VFA. The results were recorded on a daily basis and for better understanding graphs have been plotted corresponding to various results. These results helped in the vivid understanding of the working of an anaerobic system, throwing light on the operational and managerial aspect of an anaerobic sludge digester. The study also showed that this process considerably reduces the volume of solid waste being disposed to the landfill.

The amount of waste generated is rapidly increasing with the increasing population. Moreover, urban life trends boost consumption, thus amount of waste increases. As a result, waste management became an important issue for people and environmental health. In this study firstly, the criteria that used in the literature for solid waste landfill site selection are determined and evaluated. Then additional criteria are proposed and evaluation methods of the criteria are examined. After that, a view of solid waste management over an extended supply chain structure is demonstrated and the extended supply chain is examined in terms of additional flows and responsibilities. Geographical Information System (GIS) based approach is used to process the criteria and identify candidate facility locations. Besides, Mathematical Modelling is used for examining the logistics related criteria. Then Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) and analytical methods used to decide on the most suitable location for the landfill site.

This Book discusses the effects of solid waste on urban warming in Warri, Nigeria. Data were generated through stratified sampling technique, where twenty five (25) neighbourhoods reflecting the size of the land use types used for the collection of volume of waste, greenhouse gases and temperature. While the thermometer was used to measure the temperature, a Testo 350 flue gas analyzer was used to measure the Hydrocarbons/volatile organic compounds (CxHy/VOC), Nitrogen Oxides (NOx), Sulphur Oxides (SOx) and Carbon Monoxide (CO) etc. The waste data were collected through a quadrant measurement of 1m by 1m from the five major dump sites in Warri and environs. The data generated were analyzed with most probable statistical techniques. The results showed an urban warming of 4.18oC and mean temperature of 32.5OC in Warri. It established a strong correlation between volume of waste and temperature in the area.It also revealed that an increase in greenhouse gases emission from waste dump sites leads to corresponding increase in temperature. Based on this, the local, state and federal government should sensitize the people on proper waste management measures and urban planning policies.

The rapid growth in Information and Communications Technology has led to an increased demand for electrical and electronic equipments which has resulted in electronic waste (E-waste). E-waste is defined as the various forms of electrical and electronic equipments that have ceased to be of use to owners. E-waste has been shown from research to potentially induce cancer development in human beings in the long term. The objective of this study was to establish the types, quantities and management including policies and institutional mechanisms that were in place to address the E-waste problem. The study was done through structured questionnaires; thereafter the results were analyzed using descriptive statistics, contingency tables and multinomial regression. It was found that most institutions owned both computers and mobile phones and malfunctioning was the major reason for their obsoleteness. Therefore the age of imported electronic equipments should be regulated by enactment of policies. Subsequently there should be public education and training on E-waste, and encouragement of private firms to be involved in E-waste management.

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2011 in the subject Chemistry - Analytical Chemistry, grade: Publication, Michael Okpara University of Agriculture (College of Natural and Applied Sciences), course: Chemistry, language: English, abstract: Biosorption has been widely used as a more efficient alternative for the current expensive approach to heavy metal remediation from water and waste water. The effectiveness of ripe Musa sapientum (MSR) and ripe Musa cardaba (MCR) peels in the removal of Cd2+, Fe2+, Pb2+, Zn2+ ions was investigated. The amount of metal ions sorbed depended on the metal ion - adsorbent contact time, ion concentration and adsorbent weight. Weight of adsorbent was varied between 0.1 - 0.4g; contact time, 5 - 25 minutes; and ion concentration, 0.01 - 0.04M. The results indicated that Musa sapientum (Ripe) showed higher percentage sorption in removing metal ions from waste water than Musa cardaba (Ripe) peels. The peak percentage sorption of metal ions by MSR peel waste are; Cd2+ (99.95%), Fe2+ (100%), Pb2+ (100%), Zn2+ (99.92%) while metal ions by MCR peel waste was; Cd2+ (99.74%), Fe2+ (99.83%), Pb2+ (100%), Zn2+ (99.60%). The results obtained above showed that both adsorbent species are favourable for sorption and removal of the test heavy metals from their aqueous environment. Nevertheless, ripe Musa sapientum (MSR) is highly recommended for both Fe2+ and Pb2+ uptake due to its sorption capacity and efficiency.
