The first one-volume guide to sources of contamination in pharmaceuticals and medical devices Most books dealing with contaminants in medicinal products often focus on analytical methods for detecting nonspecific impurities. Key to the work of the pharmaceutical chemist, this unique reference helps identify the sources of contamination in medicinal and pharmaceutical products and medical devices. Divided into three parts, Sources of Contamination in Medicinal Products and Medical Devices covers chemical, microbiological, and physical (particulate matter) contamination, including those originating from sterilization procedures. As compelling as a medical documentary, the book sheds light on how impurities and contaminants can enter the human body transported via a specific product or treatment. Focusing on only those medicinal products and medical devices that may lead to exposure to contaminants harmful to human health, the book offers a comprehensive, systematic look at the entire universe of medical contamination: Chemical contaminants including residual solvents, catalyst residuals, and genotoxic impurities in active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) Diagnostic imaging agents (i.e., radiopharmaceuticals and contrast agents) Microbiological and endotoxin contamination involving single and multiple dose products, medical devices, and biofilms Contamination from sterilization procedures, residuals from radiation sterilization, ionizing radiation on packaging materials and medical devices Medicinal gases and volatile anesthetics Biopharmaceuticals including recombinant DNA technology products Extractables and leachables from containers made of glass, plastics, and metal Each section of the book contains information on what contaminants could be expected in a particular product, and how they were generated and reached that product. With up-to-date regulatory guidelines for determining contamination, as well as methods for assessing, quantifying, avoiding and removing contaminants, Sources of Contamination in Medicinal Products and Medical Devices is essential to fully understanding the specific threats that undermine the safety of medicines and medical devices.

The Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) disaster that occurred in Ukraine on April 26, 1986, was one of the most devastating in human history. Using this as a case study, the AGU monograph Groundwater Vulnerability: Chernobyl Nuclear Disaster is devoted to the problem of groundwater vulnerability, where the results of long-term field and modeling investigations of radionuclide transport in soil and groundwater, within the Ukrainian part of the Dnieper River basin (Kyiv region of Ukraine), are discussed. The authors provide a comprehensive review of existing literature on the assessment of groundwater vulnerability and then describe an improved methodology, which is developed based on integration of the methods of hydrogeological zonation and modeling of anomalously fast migration of radioactive contaminants from the land surface toward groundwater. This volume also includes the evaluation of the effect of preferential and episodic flow on transport of radionuclides toward the aquifers and risk assessment of groundwater vulnerability, which can further assist future researchers in developing remediation technologies for improving drinking water quality. Further, this volume sheds light on the consequences of groundwater contamination from nuclear disasters and assists with assessing the risks associated with contamination and developing effective remediation technologies. Volume highlights include discussions of the following: – Assessment of groundwater vulnerability to contamination from the Chernobyl nuclear disaster – Novel analytical results of the 25-year investigations of groundwater contamination caused by Chernobyl-born radionuclides – The wealth of data on different modes of radioactive transport in the atmosphere, water, and soils, and along the food chains – The hydrogeological and physico-chemical processes and factors in groundwater contaminated zones – The applicability of commonly used methods of the evaluation of groundwater vulnerability – A unique method of fluid dynamics that involves an anomalously fast migration of contaminants through zones of preferential flow from the land surface toward groundwater – Building confidence in the assessment of migration pathways of radionuclides in the biosphere – Assessment and prediction of the consequences of the nuclear accident, which can shed light on protection from global nuclear accidents – Analogue information for different nuclear waste disposal and environmental projects around the world

These two institutions carry two different and diametrically opposed worldview. Radioactivity is related to energy that is released from radionuclides in the form of radiation. Ionizing radiation is produced as electromagnetic rays. These radiations are the cause of genetic, reproductive and cancerous effects in the living organisms.Because of the potential for radiation contamination in the food web to badly influence human and ecological well-being, and also the interest to understand the comparative influences of local and worldwide sources to present and upcoming radionuclide concentrations, many scientific efforts have been started to characterize radionuclides in the marine environment that includes biota, seawater and sediments. Radiological risk assessment is an estimation of the possibility of a lethal cancer over the lifetime of an exposed individual. The present study estimates the radiation dose rate of marine biota using point source distribution and Erica Tool with the measured seawater and sediment activity concentrations at Karachi Coast-Pakistan. The estimated dose rates are compared with the benchmark values for environmental protection from ionizing radiation.

Dr. Nitin Prasad Contemporary Pakistan. Political System, Military and Changing Scenario

Pakistan has exercised different forms of Political systems like Presidential, Parliamentary, Federation and One Unit. Local Bodies system has also been influenced by these experiences. It has been facing Political, non-political, dictators and bureaucratic influence. Pakistan has poor facts of democracy. It has been ruled by the military, while the Military governments always generated mistakes with the politicians. Pakistan's capacity to protract the low cost conflict in Kashmir is beyond any doubt. Although the likely spillover effects of this on Pakistan's polity are obvious, they will be, to a great degree, manageable. The Islamist organisations, in spite of their opposition to elements of the state and its armed forces, are in favour of maintaining the unity of the country that is, for them, "the fortress of Islam" and "the only Islamic nuclear power". And though the US wants to tame the Pakistan army, and especially ISI its intelligence agency, it knows it will not benefit from the disintegration of the country. Nevertheless the pressures that imperialism and neoliberalism are putting on the country are creating a complex mesh of ethnic and nationalist tensions that could lead to a spiralling war. Only by fighting for a unified working class response to the pressures of globalisation and war can we hope to be able to offer an alternative.

Pakistan, Of Pakistan Government of Pakistan Hamoodur Rahman Commission of Inquiry Into the 1971 India-Pakistan War, Supplementary Report

The Hamoodur Rahman Commission was officially reconstituted in 1974 to interview returning prisoners, particularly senior officers, and issue a supplementary report to their original landmark document. The supplementary report makes fascinating reading, based on the Commissions in-depth interviews with these senior officials and officers who were directly responsible for the conduct of Pakistani forces in East Pakistan. This supplementary report is also easier to read than the original document, being less technical and much shorter. However, it still manages to paint a vivid picture of the circumstances that led to the surrender of Pakistani forces in East Pakistan. The report, just like the original, is also extremely candid in discussing the culpability and responsibility of senior officers in the events that led up to Pakistan's humiliating surrender.

Contamination is currently made use of in different types of discourse - advertisements, periodicals, terminology. The aim of the selective course is multiple: first, to prove that contamination is losing its marginal status and is moving centripetally towards the centre; second, to compare contamination with other, contiguous and not, word-forming models; third, to propose a number of exercises that would increase students' awareness of such words. The ultimate aim is to dispel the skeptical attitude towards such words by dint of showing that not all of them are facetious, superfluous or fancy. The course also aims to discuss the application of contamination in advertising and information technology. The intention of the author is to raise students' awareness of the genesis of an utterance. The book is meant for foreign language students, post-graduate students, who mean to link their research to word-formation, teachers of English, as well as for a broader audience of philologists and li...

Laura Smith A Look into Methods for Assessing and Monitoring Pupil Progress in Secondary Schools

Essay from the year 2017 in the subject Romance Languages - General, University of Birmingham, course: PGDipEd Secondary (QTS) French, language: English, abstract: In this discussion, I evaluate my practice with regards to assessment and monitoring progress. I first consider the relevant literature and explore assessment of learning and assessment for learning, as well as suggestions for monitoring pupil progress. Assessment for learning (AfL) is defined by Driscoll, Macaro and Swarbrick as: 'formative assessment and the practical implementation of this by teachers in classrooms'. Assessment of learning (AoL), often referred to as summative assessment, 'identifies the standard of attainment achieved at a particular moment in time'. I then discuss my approach in my research design, followed by a critical evaluation of my progress so far, supported by my documentary evidence. As a key part of the teaching and learning process, assessment is a frequent focus in educational research, both generally and specifically in modern languages (ML). The Office for Standards in Education state that best practice includes 'regular assessment of all four language skills', while the Department for Education (DfE) make no specific mention of assessment in the National Curriculum. This shows that there are multiple viewpoints on the importance of assessment and monitoring.

Ahmed Nawaz Hakro Twin Deficit Dynamics Case Study of Pakistan

Pakistan constitutes a valuable case study for investigating the dynamics of persistently high rates of deficits. The budget and trade deficits occurred concurrently with acute macro economic imbalances and indebtedness, which is a major cause of concern. In Pakistan, little is known with authenticity, about the channels through which changes in these deficits percolate the macroeconomic system. Most of the studies conducted outside Pakistan, assert, some support for the maintained proposition that budget deficit, in so for lead to increase in money supply do cause inflation affects interest rates and trade deficit. But identification of the model, measurement and estimation, forecasting ability, applications of impulsive response functions and variance decompositions along with causality tests are still the matter of investigation. This book filled the gap by establishing the linkages of deficits with the macroeconomic variables of Pakistan economy in vector Autoregressive Model. The book therefore, provides extensive applications of VARMA and cointegration techniques. The book is highly recommendable for economists and graduate students.

Industrial wastewater pollution is one of the most controversial problems especially in countries like Pakistan. Human activities and the release of industrial wastes have resulted in the accumulation of metals in the environment. Noxious chemicals like heavy metals include cadmium, lead, chromium, copper, nickel, etc., pollute the soils, ground water, sediments and surface waters are present in soluble form. Bioremediation technology uses microorganisms to reduce, eliminate, and transform contaminants present in soils, sediments, water, and air. One of the processes of bioremediation is "biosorption", by which metal ions are adsorbed from polluted site by microorganisms.Analysis is done by the technique of atomic absorption spectrophotometery.

A gradual realization has emerged that the education of a disable child is as important as the education of an able bodied main stream child. The special school system evolved in Pakistan as early as first decade of twentieth century; however the schools are not in sufficient numbers to cater all the special children. Explores methods for the representation and treatment of uncertainty in risk assessment In providing guidance for practical decision-making situations concerning high-consequence technologies (e.g., nuclear, oil and gas, transport, etc.), the theories and methods studied in Uncertainty in Risk Assessment have wide-ranging applications from engineering and medicine to environmental impacts and natural disasters, security, and financial risk management. The main focus, however, is on engineering applications. While requiring some fundamental background in risk assessment, as well as a basic knowledge of probability theory and statistics, Uncertainty in Risk Assessment can be read profitably by a broad audience of professionals in the field, including researchers and graduate students on courses within risk analysis, statistics, engineering, and the physical sciences. Uncertainty in Risk Assessment: Illustrates the need for seeing beyond probability to represent uncertainties in risk assessment contexts. Provides simple explanations (supported by straightforward numerical examples) of the meaning of different types of probabilities, including interval probabilities, and the fundamentals of possibility theory and evidence theory. Offers guidance on when to use probability and when to use an alternative representation of uncertainty. Presents and discusses methods for the representation and characterization of uncertainty in risk assessment. Uses examples to clearly illustrate ideas and concepts.

This research explores observed, simulated, and projected extreme climate indices from a selection of different GCMs from CMIP5 ensemble for Pakistan at province level. The extreme indices for observed, simulated and projected climate are found and analysed on provincial basis over the country. Pakistan has been facing shortages in both the power and water sector which are the lifelines of the country. Significant increases in the maximum and minimum temperatures over the country may affect such sectors drastically. Considerable increase in the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events, coupled with erratic monsoon rains may cause frequent and intense floods and droughts in the region. Rising temperatures resulting in enhanced heat and water-stressed conditions, particularly in arid and semi-arid regions, may lead to reduced agricultural productivity. This report shall bring added value to all stakeholders and policy makers in determining the hazards that extreme climate has brought in the past and may bring in the near future.

Soil can be defined as the space time continuum forming the upper part of the earth's crust. It is a natural body comprised of solid, liquid and gases that occur on the land surface. Joffe (1949) defined soil as a natural body differentiated into horizons of mineral and organic constituents usually unconsolidated of variable depth, which differs from the parent material below in morphology, physical properties and constitution, chemical properties and composition, and biological characteristics. Soil is one of the most fundamental resources for sustainability and survival. It is one of the most important assets to protect and pass on to future generations.Soil contamination due to anthropogenic and natural sources is increasing day by day because of increasing population, industrialization, and urbanization. Soil is the receptor of many contaminants from various sources. Contamination decreases the quality of the soil and adversely affects soil organisms. For this study, soil samples from thirteen locations contaminated from agricultural, industrial, and organic sources spread over the districts of Alappuzha and Kottayam in Kerala in the south west coast area of India were analyzed to study the changes in soil characteristics and its influence on soil microbial communities and their activities.

It attempts to highlight the various processes and geopolitical landmarks during the nine-thousand-years-long evolutionary processes of physical planning and development in the Indian subcontinent in general and those in Pakistan in particular. It traverses a long temporal and evolutionary progression of town planning processes in Pakistan. This book is a very m...
