Offers solutions and best practices to respond to recurrent problems and contemporary challenges in the field Since the publication of the first edition of Environmental Impact Assessment in 2003, both the practice and theory of impact assessment have changed substantially. Not only has the field been subject to a great deal of new regulations and guidelines, it has also evolved tremendously, with a greater emphasis on strategic environmental, sustainability, and human health impact assessments. Moreover, there is a greater call for impact assessments from a global perspective. This Second Edition, now titled Impact Assessment to reflect its broader scope and the breadth of these many changes, offers students and practitioners a current guide to today's impact assessment practice. Impact Assessment begins with an introduction and then a chapter reviewing conventional approaches to the field. Next, the book is organized around recurrent problems and contemporary challenges in impact assessment process design and management, enabling readers to quickly find the material they need to solve tough problems, including: How to make impact assessments more influential, rigorous, rational, substantive, practical, democratic, collaborative, ethical, and adaptive How each problem and challenge-reducing process would operate at the regulatory and applied levels How each problem can be approached for different impact assessment types—sustainability assessment, strategic environmental assessment, project-level EIA, social impact assessment, ecological impact assessment, and health impact assessment How to link and combine impact assessment processes to operate in situations with multiple overlapping problems, challenges, and impact assessment types How to connect and combine impact assessment processes Each chapter first addresses the topic with current theory and then demonstrates how that theory is applied, presenting requirements, guidelines, and best practices. Summaries at the end of each chapter provide a handy tool for structuring the design and evaluation of impact assessment processes and documents. Readers will find analyses and new case studies that address such issues as multi-jurisdictional impact assessment, climate change, cumulative effects assessment, follow-up, capacity building, interpreting significance, and the siting of major industrial and waste facilities. Reflecting current theory and standards of practice, Impact Assessment is appropriate for both students and practitioners in the field, enabling them to confidently respond to a myriad of new challenges in the field.

Several scholars across the globe identified the present lack of high quality damage data as the main constraint to efficient risk mitigation. The need for a systematic collection of damage data in the aftermath of flood events come into light, thus the aim being the creation of complete and reliable databases. Flood damage data collected in the aftermath of a disastrous event can support a variety of actions, which include: (i) the identification of priorities for intervention during emergencies, (ii) the creation of complete event scenarios on the basis of which understanding the fragilities of the flooded areas and tailoring risk mitigation strategies, (iii) the definition of victims compensation schemes, and (iv) the validation/definition of damage models to feed cost-benefit analysis of structural and non-structural mitigation actions (including insurance schemes). Volume highlights include: A good compilation of real world case studies elaborating on the survey experiences and best practices associated with flood damage data collection, storage and analysis, that can help strategize flood risk mitigation in an efficient manner Valuable contributions covering different flooding phenomena such as riverine and mountain floods, different spatial level of analysis from local to global scales, and different stakeholders perspectives, e.g. public decision makers, researchers, private companies Contributions from leading experts in the field, researchers and practitioners, including civil protection actors working at different spatial and administrative level, insurers and professionals working in the field of natural hazards mitigation Flood Damage Survey and Assessment: New Insights from Research and Practice will be a valuable resource to all earth scientists, hydrologists, meteorologists, geologists, geographers, civil engineers, insurers and policy decision makers.

Southwest Area Integrated Water Resources Management Project (SWAIWRMP) aims to rehabilitate and upgrade the existing flood control and. drainage/irrigation (FCD/I) schemes located in the Southwest region of Bangladesh, thereby achieving their maximum development potentials in terms of agriculture production, fishery production and incomes of the beneficiaries in a sustainable manner. Traditional environmental impact assessment (EIA) usually focuses on single-project development undertaken by single proponents in a narrowly defined physical area and defined time frame. The EIA carried out by SWAIWRMP eventually didn't address the cumulative environmental impact. That is why cumulative impact assessment especially for water sector project is very important and essential. There are a number of existing and proposed infrastructures in the Sub-Project area, which might have cumulative impact. This study has assessed cumulative impact for the compartment one of SWAIWRMP.

Essay from the year 2017 in the subject Romance Languages - General, University of Birmingham, course: PGDipEd Secondary (QTS) French, language: English, abstract: In this discussion, I evaluate my practice with regards to assessment and monitoring progress. I first consider the relevant literature and explore assessment of learning and assessment for learning, as well as suggestions for monitoring pupil progress. Assessment for learning (AfL) is defined by Driscoll, Macaro and Swarbrick as: 'formative assessment and the practical implementation of this by teachers in classrooms'. Assessment of learning (AoL), often referred to as summative assessment, 'identifies the standard of attainment achieved at a particular moment in time'. I then discuss my approach in my research design, followed by a critical evaluation of my progress so far, supported by my documentary evidence. As a key part of the teaching and learning process, assessment is a frequent focus in educational research, both generally and specifically in modern languages (ML). The Office for Standards in Education state that best practice includes 'regular assessment of all four language skills', while the Department for Education (DfE) make no specific mention of assessment in the National Curriculum. This shows that there are multiple viewpoints on the importance of assessment and monitoring.

Risk involves exposure to a chance of injury or loss. The fact that risk inherently involves chance leads directly to a need to describe and to deal with uncertainty. Corps policy has long been (1) to acknowledge risk and the uncertainty in predicting floods and flood impacts, and (2) to plan accordingly. Historically, that planning relied on analysis of the expected long-term performance of flood-damage-reduction measures, on application of safety factors and freeboard, on designing for worst-case scenarios, and on other indirect solutions to compensate for uncertainty. These indirect approaches were necessary because of the lack of technical knowledge of the complex interaction of uncertainties in predicting hydrologic, hydraulic, and economic functions and because of the complexities of the mathematics required to do otherwise.

Susetyo Cahyono Urban flood simulation for anticipating changes in upstream river

External changes around urbanized areas can created new hazard problems, which some times completely unpredicted before. An example of an external change of a city that may create a new hazard is disturbances in the upstream river network that carry water stream into the city. The newly established river flow configuration can change the characteristics of water that entering the city, including volume, velocity, viscosity, etc. This book explores how to analyze possible impacts due to changes in the upstream river network to flood problems in an urbanized area using 1D2D flood modelling in SOBEK software, which was developed by Delft Hydraulics. Different flood scenarios were developed by adjusting the flood modelling parameters, and then, Flood Hazard Analysis and Flood Risk Analysis were performed to determine the extent of flood problems caused by changes in the upstream river network. Results of the flood modelling show that indeed, urban areas are facing an increasing flood hazard due to changes in upstream river network.

Miller, Kashani-Sabet, Sagebiel Patient-Centered Cure Assessment. A Methodology to Assess Whether Medical Interventions Succeed in Curing Individual Patients

This book is the third in our series describing patient-centered methodologies (PCM). It focuses on both the curative potential and the successful curative impact of medical interventions. It introduces an assessment procedure through which the curative impact of some particular medical intervention against a progressive and potentially fatal disease such as cancer may be ascertained. The assessment procedure’s conclusions are probabilistic in nature. They are generated on an individually tailored, patient-by-patient basis. The curative efficacy of a medical intervention is calculated as a time-phased probability for each separate patient. The intervention’s overall curative efficacy is also calculated, probabilistically, for a given patient population.Suppose that a patient is diagnosed with some form of cancer. Suppose, further, that the patient undergoes a medical intervention known to possess some curative potential, but not guaranteed to cure everybody. For how long after the intervention must that patient wait with no evidence of further disease progression before concluding that the intervention was successful? How much time must elapse with no evidence of disease before concluding that the cancer has been beaten and, therefore, that the patient was cured? The assessment procedure introduced in this book attempts to answer precisely this question.Patient-centered diagnosis, prognosis, and cure assessment all rely on a methodology that generates individually tailored pro...

Basin Analysis is an advanced undergraduate and postgraduate text aimed at understanding sedimentary basins as geodynamic entities. The rationale of the book is that knowledge of the basic principles of the thermo-mechanical behaviour of the lithosphere, the dynamics of the mantle, and the functioning of sediment routing systems provides a sound background for studying sedimentary basins, and is a pre-requisite for the exploitation of resources contained in their sedimentary rocks. The third edition incorporates new developments in the burgeoning field of basin analysis while retaining the successful structure and overall philosophy of the first two editions. The text is divided into 4 parts that establish the geodynamical environment for sedimentary basins and the physical state of the lithosphere, followed by a coverage of the mechanics of basin formation, an integrated analysis of the controls on the basin-fill and its burial and thermal history, and concludes with an application of basin analysis principles in petroleum play assessment, including a discussion of unconventional hydrocarbon plays. The text is richly supplemented by Appendices providing mathematical derivations of a wide range of processes affecting the formation of basins and their sedimentary fills. Many of these Appendices include practical exercises that give the reader hands-on experience of quantitative solutions to important basin analysis processes. Now in full colour and a larger format, this third edition is a comprehensive update and expansion of the previous editions, and represents a rigorous yet accessible guide to problem solving in this most integrative of geoscientific disciplines. For decades, scholars have bemoaned the low relevancy and impact of most research in the leading journals in business, management, and marketing. The majority of the research that gets published, perhaps 70% of it, hardly has any measurable scholarly impact in terms of citations. Rather than low relevancy, 'Bad to Good' posits that the deeper issue is the pervasive use of bad research practices appearing in most articles in almost all ranked journals in the sub-disciplines of business. With the objective of reducing the high volume of bad practices in research in finance, management and marketing, the book offers tools for improving theory construction and empirical testing of theory especially by early-to-mid scholars. 'Bad to Good' covers 24 common bad practices, explaining why they are bad and how to replace them with good practices.Arch Woodside is a leading voice on how to improve business research. He served as the Editor-in-Chief of the 'Journal of Business Research' (JBR) for forty years. In 2016 the JBR ranked first among the top-twenty journals in marketing in the Google.com/scholar h-5 index (an impact metric) and seventh among the strategic management sub-discipline.

Essay from the year 2014 in the subject Education - Educational Tests & Measurements, grade: 72, University of Cumbria, course: Secondary Maths Teaching, language: English, abstract: The analogy of whether weighing a pig makes it fatter seems to refer to the debate over whether assessment is an effective way of raising standards. This introduces the dichotomy of whether summative or formative assessment is the most useful tool for raising standards. There may also be variables which impact on the success of assessment procedures: one of the central factors may be the role of the subject leader in assessment policies, although the ethos of the school and socio-demographic factors of the area it is situated in may also be influential. 'Weighing the pig' seems to be polysemous in that there are multiple ways of raising standards, some of which do not use any kind of assessment. This essay will examine the above factors and attempt to come to a tentative conclusion about the best way to raise standards. This paper is supported by a wealth of contemporary educational literature and theories, as well as considering a psychological perspective. It is also informed by a number of appendices collected through the author's personal teaching practice and research.

Since 1990s to date, there has been a growing global interest among researchers in impact assessment of research and development (R&D). Attention has specifically been placed on the impact of R&D interventions on target beneficiaries. In this regard, this work, besides reviewing studies on impact assessment of agricultural research in Tanzania it documents the experience of Tanzanian farmers in the use of innovations by focusing on rice research-based innovations. Adaptation rather than adoption of innovations is evident in smallholder rice farming. Moreover, it sheds light on the limitation of the production-based reductionist approach in assessing the impact of research on food security. The economic costs and benefits of rice research in rain-fed agriculture in Tanzania are also presented. In general, this book should be of great interest to students in agricultural extension, rural sociology, agricultural economics, development studies as well as managers of agricultural research.

Mikołaj Piniewski Scenario-based impact assessment of global and regional change on the semi-natural flow regime

Globally, freshwater ecosystems are considered to be under severe threat from human pressure and climate change (Vörösmarty et al., 2010). Malmqvist and Rundle (2002) suggest that running water is the most impacted upon ecosystem on Earth due to being surrounded by dense human settlements and exploited for domestic and industrial water supply, irrigation, electricity generation and waste disposal. For example, the progressive over-exploitation of surface water resources for irrigation and urban uses in the Colorado River Basin has resulted most years in no runoff reaching the river's delta (Gleick, 2003). [...] Hereafter, natural and anthropogenic driving forces will be referred to as global and regional driving forces, respectively. The future effects of these forces up to the 2050s will be assessed in quantitative scenarios implemented in a hydrological model. It is believed that using this nomenclature (i.e. global and regional instead of natural and anthropogenic) better reflects considered environmental stressors, since global-scale driving forces will include not only climatic change but also changes in CO2, atmospheric carbon dioxide and plant physiological parameters, whereas regional-scale driving forces will include changes in land use, agriculture development and agricultural water management. Hence, the difference is that the first group of driving forces acts globally and independently on the study area, whereas the second group includes factors that are spec...

Pesticide Risk Assessment for Pollinators focuses on the role pesticides play in impacting bee populations and looks to develop a risk assessment process, along with the data to inform that process, to better assess the potential risks that can accompany the use of pesticide products. Pesticide Risk Assessment for Pollinators opens with two chapters that provide a biological background of both Apis and non-Apis species of pollinators. Chapters then present an overview of the general regulatory risk assessment process and decision-making processes. The book then discusses the core elements of a risk assessment, including exposure estimation, laboratory testing, and field testing. The book concludes with chapters on statistical and modeling tools, and proposed additional research that may be useful in developing the ability to assess the impacts of pesticide use on pollinator populations. Summarizing the current state of the science surrounding risk assessment for Apis and non-Apis species, Pesticide Risk Assessment for Pollinators is a timely work that will be of great use to the environmental science and agricultural research communities. Assesses pesticide risk to native and managed pollinators Summarizes the state of the science in toxicity testing and risk assessment Provides valuable biological overviews of both Apis and non-Apis pollinators Develops a plausible overall risk assessment framework for regulatory decision making Looks towards a globally harmonized approach for pollinator toxicity and risk assessment

Sebastian Dreier The Impact of Films on the Long-Term Behavior of Stationary Electrical Connections and Contacts in Electric Power Systems

Stationary electrical connections and contacts, such as power connections, are commonly applied in electric power systems used for generation, transmission and distribution of electric energy. Several different degradation mechanisms can increase the contact resistance and might therefore reduce the power connection's lifetime. The degradation by film development is often considered as a reason for contact failure. In this research work, the impact of film development produced by chemical reactions, such as oxidation, on the long-term behavior of stationary electrical connections and contacts was studied with crossed rods. Typical material systems for electric power systems were considered in this study: Cu-ETP bare, silver-, nickel- or tin-coated, Al99.5 and AlMgSi0.5. The initial contact resistance and the plastic deformed area of the considered material systems was measured in experimental tests. The film's impact was further determined through comparative experimental studies in air and inert gas.During the experimental tests on perpendicularly crossed rods, other degradation mechanisms were suppressed. The film's impact within the formation phase was studied in more detail. Moreover, the dependency on different environments was tested. Supplementary studies were performed at low forces as well as analytical assessment of the impact of radial and axial film growth on circular contact points. As result, a general description of the interactions between film deve...

Petri Nets were defined for the study of discrete events systems and later extended for many purposes including dependability assessment. In our knowledge, no book deals specifically with the use of different type of PN to dependability. We propose in addition to bring a focus on the adequacy of Petri net types to the study of various problems related to dependability such as risk analysis and probabilistic assessment. In the first part, the basic models of PN and some useful extensions are briefly recalled. In the second part, the PN are used as a formal model to describe the evolution process of critical system in the frame of an ontological approach. The third part focuses on the stochastic Petri Nets (SPN) and their use in dependability assessment. Different formal models of SPN are formally presented (semantics, evolution rules…) and their equivalence with the corresponding class of Markov processes to get an analytical assessment of dependability. Simplification methods are proposed in order to reduce the size of analytical model and to make it more calculable. The introduction of some concepts specific to high level PN allows too the consideration of complex systems. Few applications in the field of the instrumentation and control (l&C) systems, safety integrated systems (SIS) emphasize the benefits of SPN for dependability assessment.

The quantitative assessment of the impact of climate change on water availability and water resources management requires knowledge of climate, hydro(geo)logical and water resources models, and particularly the relationships between each of them. This book brings together world experts on each of these aspects, distilling each complex topic into concise and easy to understand chapters, in which both the uses and limitations of modelling are explored. The book concludes with a set of case studies using real-life examples to illustrate the steps required and the problems that can be faced in assessing the potential impacts of climate change on water resource systems. For students, scientists, engineers and decision-makers alike, this book provides an invaluable and critical look at the information that is provided by climate models, and the ways it is used in modelling water systems. A key focus is the exploration of how uncertainties may accrue at each stage of an impacts assessment, and the reliability of the resulting information. The book is a practical guide to understanding the opportunities and pitfalls in the quantitative assessment of climate change impacts and adaptation in the water resource sector.

Master's Thesis from the year 2017 in the subject Economics - Finance, , language: English, abstract: Fiscal policy is one of the macroeconomic policies which play a decisive role on economic growth; especially in developing economies which have many economic and social bottlenecks. This study examines the impacts of fiscal policy shock on Ethiopian economy; through applying static compatible general equilibrium (Stage CGE) model which allows quantifying the impacts of fiscal instrument shock on the economy and welfare of households. Fiscal problems like small tax revenue and consistent fiscal deficit put its own major influences on developing economies performance. The study uses 2009/10 Ethiopian SAM as an input for the model and applies three simulation scenarios. In the first simulation, tariff cut affects GDP and household welfare negatively. In the second simulation increasing direct tax has negative impact on total GDP. The other alternative simulation scenario is reducing direct tax and which give a positive change on the total GDP. In general, the government should reduce direct tax to improve economic performance. In addition, liberalizing tariff is not advisable for Ethiopian economy.

This book addresses the steps needed to monitor health assessment systems and the anticipation of their failures: choice and location of sensors, data acquisition and processing, health assessment and prediction of the duration of residual useful life. The digital revolution and mechatronics foreshadowed the advent of the 4.0 industry where equipment has the ability to communicate. The ubiquity of sensors (300,000 sensors in the new generations of aircraft) produces a flood of data requiring us to give meaning to information and leads to the need for efficient processing and a relevant interpretation. The process of traceability and capitalization of data is a key element in the context of the evolution of the maintenance towards predictive strategies.
