The Australian aged care industry workers have the highest rates of manual handling injuries of all industries in Australia. As well, they have the greatest proportion of injuries sustained by being hit by a person. However, historically very little recognition have been paid on the occupational health and safety risks of workers in this industry. Effective design and implementation of OHS management systems has come to be recognised as an important process to address workplace injuries. This book describes the process of designing a new survey instrument, specifically designed for residential aged care services to assess and benchmark OHS management systems. The OHS Benchmarking Tool has application more broadly in aged care services in other countries as well as has been identified to have application in other industries.

Scientific Essay from the year 2010 in the subject Cultural Studies - Miscellaneous, San Diego State University, language: English, abstract: Creating a twenty-first-century city is not so much a question of technology as it is of jobs, dollars and quality of life. A community's plan to reinvent itself for the new, knowledge-based economy and society therefore requires educating all its citizens about this new global revolution in the nature of work. To succeed, cities must prepare their citizens to take ownership of their communities and educate the next generation of leaders and workers to meet the new global challenges of what is now being termed the "Creative Economy." At the heart of such efforts must be recognition of the vital roles that art and technology play in enhancing economic development and, ultimately, defining a "creative community" -- a community that exploits the vital linkages among art, technology and commerce. A community with a sense of place. A community that nurtures attracts and holds the most creative and innovation workers. Those communities placing a premium on cultural, ethnic, and artistic diversity, reinventing their knowledge factories for the creative age, and building the new information infrastructures for our age, will likely burst with creativity and entrepreneurial fervor. These are the ingredients so essential to developing and attracting the bright and creative people to generate new patents and inventions, innovati...

Most analysts of corporations and industries adopt the focal perspective of a single prototypical organization. Many analysts also study corporations primarily in terms of their internal organizational structures or as complex systems of financial contracts. Glenn Carroll and Michael Hannan bring fresh insight to our understanding of corporations and the industries they comprise by looking beyond prototypical structures to focus on the range and diversity of organizations in their social and economic setting. The result is a rich rendering of analysis that portrays whole populations and communities of corporations. The Demography of Corporations and Industries is the first book to present the demographic approach to organizational studies in its entirety. It examines the theory, models, methods, and data used in corporate demographic research. Carroll and Hannan explore the processes by which corporate populations change over time, including organizational founding, growth, decline, structural transformation, and mortality. They review and synthesize the major theoretical mechanisms of corporate demography, ranging from aging and size dependence to population segregation and density dependence. The book also explores some selected implications of corporate demography for public policy, including employment and regulation. In this path-breaking book, Carroll and Hannan demonstrate why demographic research on corporations is important; describe how to conduct demographic resear...

In Lebanon, a small country in the Middle East, migrant domestic workers are often hired to sustain industries and domestic households which have become cheap and often unprotected labor. Mainly recruited from Asia and Africa, female migrant domestic workers come to Lebanon expecting to work in qualified positions for fair salaries and under satisfactory working conditions. Tragically, human rights abuses against MDWs abound, including forced labor, neo-slavery working conditions, violence, and exploitation. Few studies exist which examine MDWs’ plight from a social science perspective. There are currently no existing studies that analyze MDWs in Lebanon through a theological lens. This study examines the realities of migrant domestic workers by demanding that the clergy play its God-give role in this situation. This study attempts to call attention to the fact of the plight of the workers is largely being ignored. After employing several research methods this study analyzes the perceptions and attitudes towards migrant domestic workers and reveals how the clergy are complicit in propping up structural injustices against vulnerable African and Asian migrant workers in Lebanon.

During its heyday in the 1950s and 1960s, the Bethlehem Steel mill at Sparrows Point near Baltimore was one of the world's largest steel plants, employing as many as 30,000 workers. But these glory years were short-lived, as the American steel industry soon collapsed, taking with it the high-income industrial jobs that many Sparrows Point workers had come to enjoy. This familiar tale of decline in America's industrial heartland is only part of the story, however. In response to downsizing and job loss at Sparrows Point, many women entered the workforce to fulfill the needs of their families living in the adjacent communities of Turners Station and Dundalk. Wives of Steel tells the story of these women who broke traditional gender roles and, in the process, contributed to the economic survival of their communities.Wives of Steel is based on more than eighty formal interviews conducted over a fifteen-year period with women and some men, both white and black, all of whom were part of Sparrows Point as workers, spouses, or longtime residents of the local communities. Through the stories they tell, we see how a male-dominated industry has influenced personal, family, and social experiences over several generations. We also see the distinct differences and surprising similarities between the lives of black and white women, which often reflect the complicated relationships among black and white steelworkers in the plant.Deindustrialization has transformed many of America'...

This book studies some important issues in China's labor market, such as rural labor migration, employment and wage discrimination, the new dual labor market, and economic returns on schooling, using the newer and representative data and advanced estimation models. This approach has yielded many interesting results, including a solution to the dilemma of two ongoing crises since 2004: the rural labor surplus and severe shortage of migrant labor. While male workers generally received less favorable treatment and consequently enjoyed a lower average employment probability than female workers in 1996, they also received preferential treatment over female workers, who otherwise had identical worker characteristics in 2005. We provide new estimates for male-female hourly wage differentials in urban China, and our results indicate that the hourly wage differentials and the unexplained part of the hourly wage differentials are smaller than the differentials obtained by ignoring the sample selection bias. We study China's new dual labor market, which is shifting from a rural migration versus urban workers setup to informal workers versus formal workers setup, and present some interesting results. Our study is the first to adopt the IV methodology and the Heckman (1979) two-step procedure simultaneously for the estimation of economic returns on schooling in China.

In order to evaluate smoking status in Macedonian workers’ population, we performed a cross sectional, questionnaire-based study including 753 randomly selected workers. The prevalence of current smokers among all workers was 35.4%, ranging from 30.2% in office workers to 43.5% in construction workers. It did not significantly differ from the prevalence recorded in 2005 (36.8%). The prevalence of ex-smokers among all workers was 10.5%, ranging from 8.4% in construction workers to 12.1% in office workers, and showing minor increase with respect to 2005. The prevalence of passive smokers among all workers was 29.1%, ranging from 26.2% in food processing workers to 32.9% in agricultural workers, remaining similar to their prevalence established in the 2005 study. Our findings indicated high prevalence of current and passive smokers, as well as low prevalence of ex-smokers among examined workers. There were minor changes in their prevalence with respect to the findings from the 2005 study. The results obtained also indicated a need of stricter implementation of anti-smoking activities which will be targeted to all workers.

All across America, in every state, across industries and occupations, workers are being injured, or killed on the job, or exposed to toxic chemicals from which they are dying. What has happened to our nation that has allowed corporations and insurers to throw away the lives, the health of so many without caring, without fear of exposure, without being held accountable? It's called Workers' Compensation: the system we thought was there to protect us if we were injured on the job.The title refers to a workers' compensation system in which worker deaths often cost an employer far less than correcting a safety/health hazard in the workplace; and a system in which the employer is virtually immune from prosecution for the depraved indifference that results in severe injury, toxic exposure, or death.Depraved Indifference represents over five years of research and interviews. The last chapter explores where we can go from here to create a system of fairness and justice, a system that works; that puts the responsibility and accountability on the employer to make the workplace safe for workers.

My interest in local communities in the East End was developed during the MA London Studies course at Queen Mary University of London studying at the Geography Department 2008-2010 as a part time student while working in the heritage sector. I wanted to examine the use of oral history in documenting and recording of people lives in recent times in the East End of London. I have chosen to look at how a museum in East London uses oral history to represent individuals and local communities in the East End of London. The communities in the Southern Philippines are wounded and scarred by the never-ending atrocities between the Philippine Government and Muslim rebel groups who are fighting for their land, their identity and their autonomy. The neighborhood communities between Muslims and Christians are the most affected in the atrocities. It affects the way they live, move and act as neighbors to one another. The neighborliness in the region changes as the landscape of the political and social arena changes. Thus, it is but proper that the healing and reconciliation begins in the same scarred and wounded neighborhoods. This study identifies three narratives of neighborliness in the region; (1) the intentional communities established during the American regime, (2) the neighborliness introduced by the Bishops and the Ulama in response to the document Nostra Aetate, and (3) the proposed neighborliness anchored in the document A Common Word Between Us and You. The Basic Ecclesial Communities and the Ummah are the communities at the frontier of this new neighborliness. These are the communities who are challenged to live the spirituality of reconciliation as they live this new neighborliness.

Throughout human history people have moved across national borders. With the advent of globalization, they are now moving in record numbers in search of greater security or better livelihoods. Diasporas have become an ever important and visible presence in the modern world. Their existence has sometimes resulted in violence and ethnic conflict, and on other occasions they have been peacefully assimilated into the culture and citizenship of their chosen country. This comprehensive new book seeks to explain why Diaspora communities are increasing as never before. In an accessible and engaging introduction to the field, Milton Esman looks closely at the difference in the reception of Diaspora communities throughout the world, and the responses of those communities to their new nations. By focusing on ten examples of contemporary Diasporas from Asia, the Middle East, Europe and the Americas, the book describes and illustrates the problems confronting immigrant communities as they attempt to protect their inherited culture, while coping with the demands and the opportunities they encounter in their adopted country. The book pays particular attention to the types of conflicts that arise from the development of Diaspora communities, and the consequences that these conflicts can have on the international community. This book will be essential reading for students and scholars taking courses in international relations, political sociology, ethnic politics and conflict studies.

All of us know that users of the Web do not read advertisements on the websites we visit, yet the online communities are emerging as the next great media rely solely on this method to produce revenue. In The Social Network Business Plan, social network expert, David Silver presents and explains 18 cutting-edge methods to create revenue for social network websites–none of which are advertising. He also predicts the demise of seemingly successful online communities such as MySpace and Facebook that rely on advertising as non-sustainable modalities. Silver describes and explains that in the future new products and services will be introduced, talked about, rated, reviewed and recommended – or killed – by online communities. One example of the 18 new revenue channels that online communities are adopting is the sale to vendors of anonymized conversations of the community members concerning those vendors' products or services. Another example is online communities who partner with the internet providers to receive payment when a particular online community's information is downloaded usinf that providers service. The other sixteen revenue channels are equally head-turning! Silver is the only angel investor, operating down where the rubber meets the road, who is investing in online communities in their infancy, and writing about which ones will win and which ones will fail.

Drastic changes in the career aspirations of women in the developed world have resulted in a new, globalised market for off-the-peg designer clothes created by independent artisans. This book reports on a phenomenon that seems to exemplify the twin imperatives of globalisation and female emancipation. A major conceptual contribution to the literatures on globalisation, fashion and gender, analysing the ways in which women’s entry into the labour force over the past thirty years in the developed world has underpinned new forms of aestheticised production and consumption as well as the growth of ‘work-style’ businesses A vital contribution to the burgeoning literature on culture and creative industries which often ignores the significant roles taken by women as entrepreneurs and designers rather than mere consumers Introduces fashion scholars and economic geographers to a paradigmatic example of the new designer fashion industries emerging in a range of countries not traditionally associated with fashion Takes a fresh perspective on an industry in which Third World garment workers have been the subject of exhaustive analysis but first world women have been largely ignored

Focusing on the cultural conflicts between social reformers and southern communities, William Link presents an important reinterpretation of the origins and impact of progressivism in the South. He shows that a fundamental clash of values divided reformers and rural southerners, ultimately blocking the reforms. His book, based on extensive archival research, adds a new dimension to the study of American reform movements. The new group of social reformers that emerged near the end of the nineteenth century believed that the South, an underdeveloped and politically fragile region, was in the midst of a social crisis. They recognized the environmental causes of social problems and pushed for interventionist solutions. As a consensus grew about southern social problems in the early 1900s, reformers adopted new methods to win the support of reluctant or indifferent southerners. By the beginning of World War I, their public crusades on prohibition, health, schools, woman suffrage, and child labor had led to some new social policies and the beginnings of a bureaucratic structure. By the late 1920s, however, social reform and southern progressivism remained largely frustrated.Link's analysis of the response of rural southern communities to reform efforts establishes a new social context for southern progressivism. He argues that the movement failed because a cultural chasm divided the reformers and the communities they sought to transform. Reformers were paternalistic. They believ...

Master's Thesis from the year 2013 in the subject Business economics - Miscellaneous, grade: 16,2 (French Grading), , course: European Master in Business Studies, language: English, abstract: Changes in consumption patterns have always taken place. Never in the history, however, was the impact of humans on their surrounding environment that significant. The base of this impact is industrialization and the post World War II economic boom in the triad. The attitude towards buying changed dramatically with the start of hyper-consumption and the introduction of the credit system. Idealizing haves and admiring ownership impacted people and nations around the globe. The invention of the Internet gives rise to a completely new form of media. It allows the current and new generations to thrive on the developments. The Internet offers new marketplaces and acts as a medium to create new communities. The most recent developments indicate a revival of old virtues and arts of trading. Collaborative consumption is a developing and increasingly observable trend which includes many forms of sharing and trading and defines access as superior to ownership. This trend appears to be manifold and covers numerous traditional and new industries (Botsman, 2010).The purpose of the thesis is to investigate if this trend can be considered as a phase, a niche, or if it can become a movement that will potentially redefine the way we do business. Will collaborative consumption develop into the new sta...

This text, which was awarded with a Student Award of Excellency from the English Department of the University of Vienna, analyzes the way in which urban Jewish immigrant communities are represented in Anzia Yezierska's short story collection "Hungry Hearts" and Adele Wieseman's novel "The Sacrifice". Both authors set their stories focusing on immigrant protagonists in existing Jewish communities: in New York City (Yezierska) and in Winnipeg (Wiseman). Aspects, such as religion, tradition, family ties and structures, education, work, language acquisition and use, stereotypes, community structures, the role of women within these structures, processes of acculturation etc., are taken into account in order to present a well-rounded and detailed analysis of the two authors' fictional Jewish communities, which, to some extent, reflect the authors' own experiences.

‘Social security communities’ is a hypothetical term used in the book to refer to communities that rely mainly on social grants payouts to meet their day to day basic needs. The claim is that households in ‘social security communities’ access food mainly through the market. The demographics of such communities have high dependancy ratios. These communities are predominant in former homeland areas characterised of poverty and underdevelopement. On the contrary households in ‘agrarian communities’ are actively influencing their food production and food access systems with direct practice of crop and animal husbandry. The ‘social security communities’ are welfare dependent such that in a situation where the state fails to deliver of the social welfare packages these communities are left with no means to cope. What is social security? Social security is informed of the human rights logic. It includes two formations which are social insurance (contributory oriented) and social assistance (welfare oriented). Social assistance in form of social grants (welfare oriented) is a critical feature of social policy aimed at poverty alleviation.

Ethiopian migrant workers, a great majority of whom being women, travel through regular and irregular channels to get to some of their major destination countries in the Middle East and the Gulf. These migrant workers primarily engage in low skilled areas of domestic and care services which are often left out of a right based discourse. Domestic and care works, often occupied by migrant domestic workers, are not regarded as work proper and therefore they are not regulated by the domestic labor laws of destination countries. However, the major problems faced by migrant domestic workers are violations of those basic rights, which are suppose to be protected under International Human Rights instruments and the international law on migration. This book analyzes the body of international human rights instruments and international law on migration and their applicability to migrant workers in general and migrant domestic workers in particular including those in irregular situation. Furthermore, it expounds on the history, trajectory, push and pull factors of Ethiopians' labor migration as well as the abuses and violations that this group suffers in all stages of the migration process.

AbstractThis dissertation examines how online brand communities create value through social practices. Building on the work of Schau et al. (2009) this study utilizes a netnographic approach and qualitatively investigates how Facebook brand Fan Pages are employed as brand community resources, to alleviate ties between members in the community and to establish consumer-brand-relationships. Through hermeneutic data analysis the following four value creating practices are discovered: 'exchanging brand narratives', 'celebrating brand love', 'support and information resource', and 'pressure valve for discontent'. The findings are drawn from qualitative interviews and netnographic observations of three Facebook brand Fan Pages. It is found that interaction among community members and engagement with the brand itself develop practices creating value on Fan Pages. Postmodern consumers want to be able to influence brands and also long for connections with other consumers; besides relationships are shaped by dialogue and interaction. Facebook Fan Pages offer means to achieve this and allow brands to become part of consumers´ lives. This study extends research on brand communities to the field of Social Networking and discovers insights helpful for marketing practitioners. The four detected practices create value and reconfirm findings of earlier studies on brand communities, but also add new insights by explaining how value is developed. The findings enh...

This book provides a clear and authoritative introduction to the emerging Arab media industries in the context of globalization and its impacts, with a focus on publishing, press, broadcasting, cinema and new media. Through detailed discussions of the regulation and economics of these industries, the authors argue that the political, technological and cultural changes on the global media scene have resulted in the reorganization of the Arab media field. They provide striking examples of this through the particular effects on media policies, media technology and the content and genres developed for the new generation of media consumers. As part of the book's overview of the contemporary characteristics of Arab media, the authors outline the development of the role of modern Arab media from a tool of mobilizing the public to a tool of commercial and symbolic profit. Overall, the volume illustrates how the Arab region represents a unique case where the commercialization and liberalization of selected media industries has gone hand in hand with continuous state intervention and an increasing self censorship. Written for students without prior knowledge of the topic, Arab Media will be essential reading for all interested in the contemporary global media industries.
