Natural user interface, or NUI, is the common parlance used by designers and developers of computer interfaces to refer to a user interface that is effectively invisible, or becomes invisible with successive learned interactions, to its users. The word natural is used because most computer interfaces use artificial control devices whose operation has to be learned. A NUI relies on a user being able to carry out relatively natural motions, movements or gestures that they quickly discover control the computer application or manipulate the onscreen content. The most descriptive identifier of a NUI is the lack of a physical keyboard and/or mouse.

With the ubiquity of powerful, mobile computers and rapid advances in sensing and robot technologies, there exists a great potential for creating advanced, perceptual computing environments. In this work, we investigate techniques for integrating passive, vision-based sensing into such environments, which include both conventional interfaces and large-scale environments. We discuss a methodology for vision-based human-computer interaction called the Visual Interaction Cues (VICs) paradigm. In the VICs paradigm, users interact with the computer system through natural hand gestures. We capture a "language of interaction" in which individual gestures are the words and sequences of gestures are the sentences. We give examples of both individual gestures and the gesture language, and present them on our next-generation interaction platform, the 4D Touchpad. Ultimately, our work takes a concrete step toward perceptual user interfaces.

Inhaltsangabe:Abstract: More and more companies apply electronic information systems in all their business areas. In the past, many of these systems pertained to one specific user group. However, due to high efforts and investments for maintaining these information flows, companies tend to increase the amount of attracted user groups. Thereby, the users must deal with more and more information every day. In addition, they must select the relevant information, which serves as a basis for their decisions, on their own. This procedure and the included irrelevant information generate high efforts due to re-work requirements. Therefore, users reject more and more information. All these conditions combined with a two-user group-oriented customer information system require output adjustments to the user-specific needs. Consequently, it is necessary to identify the users, their needs, and the potential effectiveness of specific information provided by a specific system. This thesis refers to theoretical analysis models for generating an optimal concept. Thereby, it considers methods analyzing the original information system aim, user groups, their needs and the way the provided information flow can meet all these requests. These considerations represent actual conditions of Varta Gerätebatterie GmbH. Afterwards, this research compares the optimal with the actual situation in order to deduct appropriate improvement steps. Finally, this thesis suggests possible integrations and constit...

The semantic approach to data storage, management and extraction is a promising concept that has constantly been gaining importance during the past years. However, the visualization of semantic data systems as well as the functionalities of their interfaces still contain some obstacles for both, the interaction designer and the interacting user. In order to accommodate to those obstacles, the interaction designer has to come up with an intuitive and efficient user interface design, introducing inexperienced users to data representation and extraction in a semantic environment. The intention of this work is to provide an overview over the disciplines of Human Computer Interaction and Interaction Design, with the intention to mediate the essential human-based and technical processes influencing the design of interaction, with a focus on the organisation and representation of unstructured, semantically rich data.

Today's offered services in the World Wide Web increasingly rely on the disclosure of private user information. Service providers' appetite for personal user data, however, is accompanied by growing privacy implications for Internet users. Targeting the rising privacy concerns of users, privacy-enhancing technologies (PETs) emerged. One goal of these technologies is the provision of tools that facilitate more informed decisions about personal data disclosures. Unfortunately, available PET solutions are used by only a small fraction of Internet users. A major reason for the low acceptance of PETs is their lack of usability. Most PET approaches rely on the cooperation of service providers that do not voluntarily adopt privacy components in their service infrastructures.Addressing the weaknesses of existing PETs, this book introduces a user-centric privacy architecture that facilitates a provider-independent exchange of privacy-related information about service providers. This capability is achieved by a privacy community, an open information source within the proposed privacy architecture. A Wikipedia-like Web front-end enables collaborative maintenance of service provider information including multiple ratings, experiences and data handling practices. In addition to the collaborative privacy community, the introduced privacy architecture contains three usable PET components on the user side that support users before, during and after the disclosure of personal data. Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2012 in the subject Sociology - Work, Profession, Education, Organisation, grade: None, International School of New Media at the University of Lübeck, language: English, abstract: The advent of online social networking has created opportunities for brands to attract large numbers of followers, while individuals can 'add' thousands of other members as personal friends. However, how users and brands share with, manage, and control communication to and from these large 'personal' networks has become a challenge. The challenge is exacerbated further by having separate massaging interfaces for communication channels like chat, inbox messaging, status update, etc, as it currently obtains in leading social networking services. In this paper, we present Mobbo1, a service that ranks and organizes people who share similar interests (eg fans of a brand, or a user's network of friends) into concise and manageable communities called mobbos, to enable targeted messaging and intuitive control of communication to and from other network members. Every activity in the network is thus associated with a community of interest, such that all messaging in the network takes place within these mobbos, and is targeted to only members of the mobbo. The mobbo approach unifies messaging interfaces into one, to improve interaction experience and centralize control and access. An algorithm to compute and rank a brand's or user's 'pe...

In recent years the average users tend to replace their traditional mobile phones, PDAs and Palms with smartphones. These devices have become a pervasive part of everyday life. Dealing with huge amounts of data, the mobile device's and application's demand for certain security standards cannot be underestimated. In recent studies the individual user's needs in terms of technical features, applications etc. have not been addressed and analyzed properly. To capture the problem in its full extent it is vital to understand the user's expectations. Besides, the usage patterns have to be described especially against the background of security aspects. As mentioned before, recent analyzes did not specifically ask what the user expects from a smartphone. Hence, the main objective of this work is to get a broad picture on how smartphones are used today and what users expect, taking into consideration security aspects..An international web-based online survey was designed and performed to measure and analyze users' behaviour when using smartphones, with the aim of finding out what they want and expect from a smartphone. Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2011 in the subject Computer Science - Internet, New Technologies, grade: 1,0, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), language: English, abstract: Social Web applications have emerged as powerful applications for Internet users allowing them to freely contribute to the Web content, organize and share information, and utilize the collective knowledge of others for discovering new topics, resources and newfriends. While social Web applications such as social tagging systems have many benefits, they also present several challenges due to their open and adaptive nature. The amount of user generated data can be extremely large and since there is not any controlled vocabulary or hierarchy, it can be very difficult for users to find the information that is of their interest. In addition, attackers may attempt to distort the system's adaptive behavior by inserting erroneous or misleading annotations, thus altering the way in which information is presented to legitimate users. This thesis utilizes data mining and machine learning techniques to address these problems. In particular, we design and develop recommender systems to aid the user in contributing to the Social Semantic Web. In addition, we study intelligent techniques tocombat attacks against social tagging systems. In our work, we first propose a framework that maps domain properties to recommendation technologies. This framework provides a systematic approach to find the appr...

This type of internet application enjoys great popularity which results in new challenges for identity and relation management. On one side the user has to manage different identities and on the other side a friendslist per social network service. From this effort arose to make data portable and reusable for example in order to avoid re-declaring friends to every site. To accomplish this goal numerous projects and technologies have been developed, which already provide partial solutions for this problem. The basic conceptual question however how to deal with the problem generally is still open. Moreover some of the techniques are only suitable for special use cases or else not ready für a professional use. In this thesis some of the existing standards shall be used to tie them together to one total system. This system consists out of a central identity provider, which functions as a central storage for the users contact data. By utilising interfaces this contact data can be exchanged with the social network service and by that improves the relation management for the users.

Nowadays the largest E-commerce or E-service websites offer millions of products for sale. A Recommender system is defined as software used by such websites for recommending product items to users according to the users' tastes. In this project, we develop a recommender system for a private multimedia web service company. In particular, we devise three recommendation engines using different data filtering methods - named weighted-average, K-nearest neighbors, and item-based - which are based on collaborative filtering techniques, which work by recording user preferences on items and by anticipating the future likes and dislikes of users by comparing the records, for prediction of user preference. To acquire proper input data for the three engines, we retrieve data from database using three data collection techniques: active filtering, passive filtering, and item-based filtering. For experimental purpose we compare prediction accuracy of those recommendation engines with the results from each engine and additionally we evaluate the performance of weighted-average method using an empirical analysis approach - a methodology which was devised for verification of predictive accuracy.

Master's Thesis from the year 2012 in the subject Computer Science - Software, grade: 2,3, Free University of Berlin (Institut für Informatik), language: English, abstract: This thesis proposes a way to contribute to the data generation process for the Semantic Web. It picks up the idea of Extreme Tagging Systems (ETS), which are an extension to well-known Collaborative Tagging Systems (CTS) like Delicious and Flickr, where users can associate keywords (or "tags") with resources like websites or pictures. ETS allow for more flexibility because they let the users not only tag resources but also tags themselves and even let the users specify the relation between two tags.A concept for an ETS implementation as a game is developed. This game is primarily meant to be fun for the users, by this trying to motivate them to continue to use the system. But at the same time through the game the users do work and help to solve problems that cannot yet be automated - in this case problems of Extreme Tagging. Such games that are both fun and useful are called Games With a Purpose (GWAPs).The concept for an ETS as a GWAP is implemented as well as an ETSas a website. The work then compares both implementations in respect to user motivation (fun), efficiency and productivity. It shows that the implementation as game outperforms the website in all examined aspects. For example the evaluation reveals that a user of the website is expected to generate 33 tags during her lifetime use ...

Scientific Essay from the year 2016 in the subject Communications - Multimedia, Internet, New Technologies, grade: 7.0, Bannari Amman Institute of Technology, course: Ph.D, language: English, abstract: Biometric methods for authenticating and identifying people are increasingly used in both the commercial and private sector. Today's commercially available biometric systems show good reliability. However, they generally lack user acceptance. Users showed an antipathy towards touching a possibly dirty fingerprint scanner, or looking into an iris scanner that might malfunction and eventually impair their vision. Whether those fears are well founded or not is less important. The fact is, they have considerable influence on user acceptance. And user consent is important for a good and successful application of a biometric system, as well as for good recognition rates. In response to the increasing demand for reliable as well as user friendly biometric systems, this work investigates the applicability of palmprint and FKP were the biometric features for authentication. Using palmprint or FKP as a biometric system avoids such problems as shown before, since it requires no subject interaction. The main objectives of the thesis are: to propose the transform based techniques that is used to achieve higher recognition accuracy and lower equal error rate; and to examine the performance of the proposed techniques with the existing methodologies.

Literature Review from the year 2015 in the subject Engineering - Computer Engineering, grade: 8.0, Marwadi Education Foundation (GTU), course: Computer Engineering (M.E.), language: English, abstract: In today's insecure world we are surrounded by public channels which are insecure for data transfer to each other. So it requires some type of remote user authentication mechanism to verify the legitimate user. In remote user authentication schemes, the server checks the credentials of the user and decides that the user is legitimate and genuine or not. Remote user also validates the server for mutual authentication purposes. In today's web-enabled world, two parameters are most important which are security and privacy. For that many researchers work on this field and proposed a schemes which is based on different aspects likes password table, biometric and smart card for authenticating the remote user. But these are not enough for perfect remote authentication, so a scheme is required which has stronger and accurate then old existing schemes. To make most reliable scheme, it is important to calculate computational and communication cost. Also it requires resistance against many other threats. For these mutual authentication and communication privacy are most essential requirements for remote user authentication scheme. In this survey, we analyze some papers and make survey on different aspects like types of attacks, computational cost and communication cost.

Interfaces are back, or perhaps they never left. The familiar Socratic conceit from the Phaedrus, of communication as the process of writing directly on the soul of the other, has returned to center stage in today's discussions of culture and media. Indeed Western thought has long construed media as a grand choice between two kinds of interfaces. Following the optimistic path, media seamlessly interface self and other in a transparent and immediate connection. But, following the pessimistic path, media are the obstacles to direct communion, disintegrating self and other into misunderstanding and contradiction. In other words, media interfaces are either clear or complicated, either beautiful or deceptive, either already known or endlessly interpretable. Recognizing the limits of either path, Galloway charts an alternative course by considering the interface as an autonomous zone of aesthetic activity, guided by its own logic and its own ends: the interface effect. Rather than praising user-friendly interfaces that work well, or castigating those that work poorly, this book considers the unworkable nature of all interfaces, from windows and doors to screens and keyboards. Considered allegorically, such thresholds do not so much tell the story of their own operations but beckon outward into the realm of social and political life, and in so doing ask a question to which the political interpretation of interfaces is the only coherent answer. Grounded in philosophy and cultural theory and driven by close readings of video games, software, television, painting, and other images, Galloway seeks to explain the logic of digital culture through an analysis of its most emblematic and ubiquitous manifestation – the interface.

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2015 in the subject Computer Science - Applied, Arizona State University, language: English, abstract: Along with the number of technologies that have been introduced over a few years ago, gesture-based human-computer interactions are becoming the new phase in encompassing the creativity and abilities for users to communicate and interact with devices. Current gesture recognition systems lack sufficient consideration for the impact they have on user's health and preference during usage. Thus, determining and defining low-stress and intuitive gestures for user interaction is necessary for improving human-computer communication and increasing the usability of gesture-driven devices. To find the relationship, if any, between stress and intuitive gestures, a Galvanic Skin Response instrument was used and worn by fifteen participants (10 females, 5 males) as a primary measurement of stress. The participants also engaged in creating and performing their own gestures for specified tasks, which include "activation of the display," "scroll," "page," "selection," "undo," and "return to main menu." They were then asked to repeat their gestures for around ten seconds each, giving them time and further insight into how their gestures would be appropriate or not for them and any given task. Dialogue management technology has developed rapidly over the years resulting in real-time applications like telephony directories, timetable enquiries, and in-car applications. However, the current technology is still largely based on models that use rigid command language type interactions, and the users need to adapt their human communication strategies to the needs of the technology. As an increasing number of interactive ubiquitous applications will appear, challenges for interaction technology concern especially natural, more human-friendly communication. Recent research has focused on developing speech-based interactive systems that aim to increase the system’s communicative competence. By including aspects of interaction beyond simple speech recognition and question-answer based interaction, applications with more conversational interfaces have become possible. New dialogue management technology needs to address the challenges in human-technology interaction, so that smart environments should not only enable user-controlled command interfaces but equip applications with a capability that affords easy and friendly interactions with the user. Dialogue Modelling: Speech Interaction and Rational Agents provides an overview of the current dialogue technology and research trends in spoken dialogue systems, presenting a coherent perspective of AI-based cooperative interaction management. The book complements existing research regarding human-computer interfaces, speech and language technology, and communication studies in general, bringing different view-points together and integrating them into a single point of reference. Constructive Dialogue Modelling: Presents a guide to spoken dialogue technology and current research trends. Provides an overview of human factors in dialogue systems and delivers a new metaphor for human-computer interaction and computer as agent. Explains the architecture of dialogue systems using examples from systems such as Interact and DUMAS Offers a comprehensive overview of original research into the new trends in speech dialogue technology in light of innovations such as ubiquitous computing. This book will provide essential reading for industrial designers and interface engineers, university researchers and teachers, computer scientists, human communication researchers, speech and language technologists, cognitive engineers/cognitive scientists, as well as social and media researchers, and psychologists. Advanced students and researchers in computer science, speech and language technologies, psychology and communication research will find this text of interest.

Today, audiovisual archives and libraries have become very popular especially in the field of collecting, preserving and transmitting cultural heritage. However, the data in these archives or libraries – videos, images, soundtracks, etc. – constitute as such only potential cognitive resources for a given public (or “target community”). One of the most crucial issues of digital audiovisual libraries is indeed to enable users to actively appropriate audiovisual resources for their own concern (in research, education or any other professional or non-professional context). This means, an adaptation of the audiovisual data to the specific needs of a user or user group can be represented by small and closed «communities» as well as by networks of open communities around the globe. «Active appropriation» is, basically speaking, the use of existing digital audiovisual resources by users or user communities according to their expectations, needs, interests or desires. This process presupposes: 1) the definition and development of models or «scenarios» of cognitive processing of videos by the user; 2) the availability of tools necessary for defining, developing, reusing and sharing meta-linguistic resources such as thesauruses, ontologies or description models by users or user communities. Both aspects are central to the so-called semiotic turn in dealing with digital (audiovisual) texts, corpora of texts or again entire (audiovisual) archives and libraries. They demonstrate practically and theoretically the well-known “from data to metadata” or “from (simple) information to (relevant) knowledge” problem, which obviously directly influences the effective use, social impact and relevancy, and therefore also the future, of digital knowledge archives. This book offers a systematic, comprehensive approach to these questions from a theoretical as well as practical point of view. Contents Part 1. The Practical, Technical and Theoretical Context 1. Analysis of an Audiovisual Resource. 2. The Audiovisual Semiotic Workshop (ASW) Studio – A Brief Presentation. 3. A Concrete Example of a Model for Describing Audiovisual Content. 4. Based on a critical literature review, results of previous research studies, and expert interviews with social media practitioners, the author develops a conceptual framework consisting of seven factors that are theorised to impact on how users perceive personalised ads in a social network environment. This framework is partially verified on an empirical basis by means of an online survey among 97 Facebook users. The results provide novel and useful insights into user perception of targeted ads on Facebook that could be used as guidelines for practitioners and as a starting point for further studies.

Its English-like syntax makes it a great language for teaching and learning computer programming. Python's powerful data structures/types such as lists, tuples, dictionaries, sets, and arrays make coding simple. It also comes with an extensive collection of built-in/library functions that allows users to develop software applications with relative ease. Besides, users can freely import external modules to help them develop all sorts of applications. Python's interactive and interpreted mode makes coding and testing software easy. Python also doubles us as a powerful and sophisticated calculator. You can use Python to develop all sorts of applications ranging from simple Mathematical and Text processing to Database, Web, Graphical User Interface, Network, Games, Data Mining, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning and Deep Learning. This book is intended for beginners who have little or no knowledge of programming. It is also suitable for intermediate programmers who already have some knowledge of programming. Recommender systems aim to suggest relevant items that are likely to be of interest to the users using a variety of information resources such as user profiles, trust information and users past predictions. However, typical recommender systems suffer from poor scalability, generating incomprehensible and not useful recommendations and data sparsity problem. In this work, we have proposed a probabilistic matrix factorization based local trust boosted recommendation system which handles data sparsity, scalability and understandability problems. The method utilizes the implicit trust in the review ratings of users. The experiments conducted on Epinions.com dataset showed that our method compares favorably with the methods in the literature. In the scope of this work, we have analyzed the effect of latent vector initialization in matrix factorization models; different techniques are compared with the selected evaluation criteria.

Intrusion detection system is a detection mechanism that detects unauthorized, malicious presents in the computer systems. The purpose of this book is to design, implement and evaluate an anomaly based network intrusion detection system. The System learns about the normal users' behavior and finds the anomalies by matching with this normal behavior. A special type of neural network called backpropagation neural network is used for learning normal users' behavior. The network traffic that only contains information of normal users is presented with the neural network for learning about the normal users' behavior. The system performance has been tested by using a simulated computer network. The neural network is trained with huge, not so huge and small amount of data. The detection capability of the system has been tested with huge and small amount of data. It is seen from the performance analysis that the system performs well when trained with small amount of data. An overall detection rate of 98% has been achieved for both known and unknown attacks. Moreover, the system can detect 100% normal user.

4. Model of Description and Task of Analysis. Part 2. Tasks in Analyzing an Audiovisual Corpus 5. The Analytical Task of “Describing the Knowledge Object”. 6. The Analytical Task of “Contextualizing the Domain of Knowledge”. 7. The Analytical Task of “Analyzing the Discourse Production around a Subject”. Part 3. Procedures of Description 8. Definition of the Domain of Knowledge and Configuration of the Topical Structure. 9. The Procedure of Free Description of an Audiovisual Corpus. 10. The Procedure of Controlled Description of an Audiovisual Corpus. Part 4. The ASW System of Metalinguistic Resources 11. An Overview of the ASW Metalinguistic Resources. 12. The Meta-lexicon Representing the ASW Universe of Discourse.
