Avi Blau Why What Works, Doesn.t

Many environmental problems have to do with energy use, it is therefore very surprising that profitable opportunities to reduce energy consumption, awarding both economical and environmental benefits, are not more widely implemented. This work lists examples of such technological opportunities, discusses the barriers to their adoption, and suggests policy solutions to overcome these barriers. The focus group for this research are municipalities as energy users, mainly in Israel and Sweden. The author concludes that increase use of environmental technologies is possible, many times with economic gains even in the short range. Municipalities alone cannot be expected to take upon themselves the risks and costs of adoption of these new technologies, and therefore central government has a crucial role in creating a supportive environment for such a process. The main barrier to such a development is conservatism of public officials and decision makers.

Luis Zegarra Institutions, Economic Development and Early Banking in Latin America

This book analyzes the factors that affected the development of the banking sector in Latin America from 1850 to 1930. One of the most striking features of Latin America during this period was the very limited extent of banking development. Perhaps the most common explanation for some Latin American countries is that restrictive bank laws established high barriers to entry and discouraged the formation of banks and the provision of banking services. In this book, however, I show that liberal bank laws did not necessarily lead to highly developed banking systems, and that a low demand for banking services was a significant cause for the stunted development of the banking sector in most of Latin America during this era. Using annual data for seven Latin American countries for this period, I find that the long-run supply of banking services largely responded to changes in the demand for banking services. Country-case studies for Argentina and Peru strongly support these findings. In these two countries, the banking sector responded to the demand for banking sector by opening bank offices and providing banking services in response to positive demand shocks.

Panezai Sanaullah Inter-district Variation in Health Care Services in Balochistan

The existence of regional inequalities in health care services is a common phenomenon at global level. Efforts are made to reduce the regional inequalities by promoting equitable access to primary health care (PHC) services and facilities. This study explores the inter-district variation in primary health care services and development in Balochistan. The study uses a set of twelve (12) PHC related indicators, out of them ten (10) are related to curative health care and two (2) indicators are selected covering the curative aspect of primary health care. By using 0-1 transformation value technique, the composite indexes are calculated for curative and preventive health care services. Districts are ranked as under developed, moderately developed, developed and less developed. There are found sharp inter-district variations in curative as well as preventive health care services in Balochistan. In order to promote the primary health care services in Balochistan the proposed recommendations include ensuring equitable provision of health professionals particularly in terms of female doctors, and decentralization of tertiary care services in order to promote primary health care services.

The issue of age old practice of open defecation and the provision of safe sanitary facilities to the people at the same time, has been one of the most difficult challenges before the Indian policy makers. The author investigates the rural sanitation campaign in Uttar Pradesh, a state in India, drawing on possible policy lessons from Bangladesh to use the techniques of Information,Education and Communication as a tool for mass mobilization for ensuring active community participation in the Clean India Campaign(Nirmal Bharat Abhiyan)to go for a sustained demand generation for toilets, its community ownership and finally bringing about lasting sanitary behavioral changes through inter-personal and inter-community communication. The author after deep investigations in the backward areas of Uttar Pradesh, having largely socio-economically vulnerable population, suggests certain grass root level policy interventions in order to meet out the ambitious sanitation targets under the Millennium Development Goals as set by the United Nations. The findings hold immense relevance in the wake of the resolve taken by the new Government in India to go for a clean India by the year 2019.

Of course buyers have always been concerned about quality, but increasing competition in the current markets of many services has made consumers more selective in the service they choose. The study focuses on banking services, their quality and customer satisfaction in the banking system: as a case study, services provided by banks in Shkodra have been taken. For the realization of the study a complete analysis was used based on the data collected from the questionnaire with the clients of the commercial banks operating in Shkodra. The data provided by the questionnaire analyzed the real level of banking services in Shkodra. These services are seen in terms of their diversity as well as the level of quality of services they offer to attract the customer. The study also highlights the gaps that these banks have in their services under contemporary conditions. The purpose of this study is to confirm the theory that banks should do more to perceive the customer about the quality of services. Communication services are evolving at an unprecedented rate. No longer limited to interpersonal vocal communication, they now integrate functions such as address books, content sharing and messaging. The emergence of social networks – which may also include these features – is an important element of this transformation. Content services are becoming flagship services themselves, and are sometimes paired up with conversation services. The boundaries between different services are becoming less and less distinct. This book meets the need for a better understanding of communication services, and for a general framework of their description. A detailed overview on service architecture in the Telco, Web and IT worlds is presented, offering a roadmap with explanations on how to improve the architecture and governance of communication service architectures by exploiting the syntax and semantics that are common to different services is clearly outlined. This book also responds to recurring questions about service design, such as the functional scope of enablers or SOA (Service Oriented Architecture) services, the relevance of service composition to the user and collaboration between different services in a converged environment. Many concrete examples from telecoms service providers’ operations illustrate these concepts. Contents 1. Describing Service Architectures. 2. Convergence of Service. 3. Comprehensive coverage explaining the correlation and synergy between Next Generation Networks and the existing standardized technologies This book focuses on Next Generation Networks (NGN); in particular, on NGN architectures, protocols and services, including technologies, regulation and business aspects. NGN provides convergence between the traditional telecommunications and the Internet, and it is globally standardized by the ITU (International Telecommunication Union), where ITU is the United Nations specialized agency for Information and Communication Technologies – ICTs. The convergence towards the NGN is based on the Internet technologies, and the introductory chapters cover the Internet fundamentals of today, including architectures, protocols (IPv4, IPv6, TCP, DNS, etc.), Internet services (WWW, e-mail, BitTorrent, Skype, and more), as well as Internet governance. Further, the prerequisite for convergence of all ICT services over single network architectures is broadband access to the Internet. Hence, the book includes architectures of fixed broadband Internet access networks, such as DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) networks, cable networks, FTTH (Fiber To The Home), next generation passive and active optical networks, and metro Ethernet. It also covers network architectures for next generation (4G) mobile and wireless networks (LTE/LTE-Advanced, and Mobile WiMAX 2.0), then Fixed Mobile Convergence – FMC, next generation mobile services, as well as business and regulatory aspects for next generation mobile networks and services. Diana Bednarek Entering successfull the Indian market. Recommendations and challenges for German small and medium-sized companeies

The objective of this study is to identify, to analyse, and to evaluate the market entry barriers for German small and medium-sized companies in India. Moreover, this study provides recommendations in order to minimize or overcome those barriers. Existing studies are discussing the market entry of big companies such as of Siemens AG and Robert Bosch GmbH in India, but issues of small and medium-sized companies are neglected. This academic void is closed by this study with the help of the implementation of questionnaires and interviews. Based on these primary sources, market entry barriers for German small and medium-sized companies in India are identified as well as analysed, and recommendations to reduce or even overcome them are presented.

Koper Alison Janet The Development of an Effective Wind Energy Regime in Nova Scotia

Three major goals of renewable energy policy include security of supply, environmental protection and economic development and stability. One way in which our society can work towards achieving these goals is through the addition of wind and other renewable energy sources to the electrical grid. While Nova Scotia has set forth many goals and targets to encourage renewable energy development in the province, many barriers exist. This qualitative study aims to identify these barriers and propose recommendations for overcoming or mitigating them in light of realizing an effective wind energy regime. The barriers were identified and recommendations developed following an extensive literature review and consultation with 17 stakeholders within the electrical power generation sector between September 2008 and April 2009.

Solving the world's water problems is proving to be one of the greatest investment opportunities of our time. Already, world water supplies are inadequate to meet demand, and the problem is going to get much worse in the years ahead. The World Bank estimates that 1.1 billion people lack access to safe drinking water and about 50 percent of the world's hospital beds are populated by people who have contracted water-borne diseases. If present consumption rates continue, in 25 years the world will be using 90 percent of all available freshwater. To address the problem, trillions of dollars will need to be invested in water infrastructure projects. And while the problems are most acute in developing and rapidly growing economies, there are huge water infrastructure needs in industrialized countries, as well. In the U.S. alone, it's estimated that more than $1 trillion will be needed for water and wastewater infrastructure projects. In Planet Water, water investment expert Steven Hoffmann explains the dynamics driving the water crisis and identifies investment opportunities in various sectors of the water industry. Hoffman provides investors with the knowledge and insights they need to make informed investments in water utilities, as well as companies providing water treatment services; infrastructure services; water monitoring and analytics; and desalination services. He also discusses mutual funds and ETFs that specialize in water stocks. Investing in the water industry is certainly no pie-in-the-sky idea. Over the past five years, many water stocks have exploded in value and water stocks as a whole have outperformed the S&P 500 by a substantial amount. In Planet Water, Hoffmann provides investors with everything they need to profit from this fast-growing industry in the years ahead.
