Basin Analysis is an advanced undergraduate and postgraduate text aimed at understanding sedimentary basins as geodynamic entities. The rationale of the book is that knowledge of the basic principles of the thermo-mechanical behaviour of the lithosphere, the dynamics of the mantle, and the functioning of sediment routing systems provides a sound background for studying sedimentary basins, and is a pre-requisite for the exploitation of resources contained in their sedimentary rocks. The third edition incorporates new developments in the burgeoning field of basin analysis while retaining the successful structure and overall philosophy of the first two editions. The text is divided into 4 parts that establish the geodynamical environment for sedimentary basins and the physical state of the lithosphere, followed by a coverage of the mechanics of basin formation, an integrated analysis of the controls on the basin-fill and its burial and thermal history, and concludes with an application of basin analysis principles in petroleum play assessment, including a discussion of unconventional hydrocarbon plays. The text is richly supplemented by Appendices providing mathematical derivations of a wide range of processes affecting the formation of basins and their sedimentary fills. Many of these Appendices include practical exercises that give the reader hands-on experience of quantitative solutions to important basin analysis processes. Now in full colour and a larger format, this third edition is a comprehensive update and expansion of the previous editions, and represents a rigorous yet accessible guide to problem solving in this most integrative of geoscientific disciplines. Zakia Afrin Transitional Authority in Iraq. Legitimacy, Governance and Potential Contribution to the Progressive Development of International Law

What happens when a government is overthrown? How is a new governing body developed? Finally, which rights of the people need to be preserved in the process of state building? Dr. Zakia Afrin's book Transitional Authority in Iraq: Legitimacy, Governance and Potential Contribution to the Progressive Development of International Law, addresses these issues in the case of post conflict Iraq's developing governing body. The analysis focuses on the composition, legal authority, and effectiveness of the transitional powers in Iraq. A key point of focus is the development of the people's rights during the new government's formation. However, this book balances its analysis by pointing out the degradation of many human rights in Iraq, especially women's rights. Dr. Afrin's analysis and conclusions are practically applicable to future instances of new governance development as well as meriting study by comparative legal scholars. The book includes a reprint of the Law of the Administration for the State of Iraq for theTransitional Period, 2004. About the author: Zakia Afrin is an adjunct professor of Law at Golden Gate University in San Francisco. An alumnus of the Hague Academy of International law, Dr. Afrin has an LL.B from Dhaka University in Bangladesh, LL.M and an SJD specializing in public international law from Golden Gate University. Traditional well logging methods, such as resistivity, acoustic, nuclear and NMR, provide indirect information related to fluid and formation properties. The “formation tester,” offered in wireline and MWD/LWD operations, is different. It collects actual downhole fluid samples for surface analysis, and through pressure transient analysis, provides direct measurements for pore pressure, mobility, permeability and anisotropy. These are vital to real-time drilling safety, geosteering, hydraulic fracturing and economic analysis. Methods for formation testing analysis, while commercially important and accounting for a substantial part of service company profits, however, are shrouded in secrecy. Unfortunately, many are poorly constructed, and because details are not available, industry researchers are not able to improve upon them. This new book explains conventional models and develops new, more powerful algorithms for early-time analysis, and importantly, addresses a critical area in sampling related to “time required to pump clean samples” using rigorous multiphase flow techniques. All of the methods are explained in complete detail. Equations are offered for users to incorporate in their own models, but convenient, easy-to-use software is available for those needing immediate answers. The leading author is a well known petrophysicist, with hands-on experience at Schlumberger, Halliburton, BP Exploration and other companies. His work is used commercially at major oil service companies, and important extensions to his formation testing models have been supported by prestigious grants from the United States Department of Energy. His new collaboration with China National Offshore Oil Corporation marks an important turning point, where advanced simulation models and hardware are evolving side-by-side to define a new generation of formation testing logging instruments. The present book provides more than formulations and solutions: it offers a close look at formation tester development “behind the scenes,” as the China National Offshore Oil Corporation opens up its research, engineering and manufacturing facilities through a collection of interesting photographs to show how formation testing tools are developed from start to finish.

The Carboniferous Shannon Basin of Western Ireland has become one of the most visited field areas in the world. It provides an ideal opportunity for examining a wide range of ancient sedimentary environments, including carbonate shelf, reefs and mud mounds, black shales and phosphates, and a spectrum of deep sea, shallow marine, fluvio-deltaic and alluvial siliciclastic sediments. The area boasts extensive outcrops and some of the most renowned sections through turbidites, large-scale soft sediment deformation features and sediments that display a response to tectonic and sea-level controls. This field guide provides the first synthesis of the principal localities in this area of Western Ireland, and presents an easily accessible handbook that will guide the reader to, and within, a wide range of sedimentary facies, allowing an understanding of the evolving nature of the fill of this Carboniferous basin and the context of its sedimentary and tectonic evolution. The guide summarizes recent and new work in the area by a range of authors and outlines issues of current debate concerning the Shannon Basin and its palaeoenvironmental interpretation. The field guide will find extensive use in teaching and research by academic researchers, professional and amateur geologists, as well as by applied geologists, geophysicists and reservoir engineers who use these outcrops as analogues for subsurface reservoirs in many areas of the world.

Sam Beer The United States. Program for Agriculture in Post-Invasion Iraq

In the wake of the invasion of Iraq in 2003, the United States embarked on the massive project of rebuilding and transforming the agricultural sector in that country. This program was as controversial as the invasion itself, being variously portrayed as the hands-on altruism of Farm Belt army reservists or the neocolonial subjugation of Iraqi farmers to American corporations. Agricultural "development" in Iraq (and simultaneously, in Afghanistan) was conducted differently than previous such projects-largely by contractors rather than USAID employees, and in close coordination with the occupying military forces. While a popular opinion has emerged against the invasion itself, there has been little retrospective discussion about the goals or methods of agricultural aid in Iraq. With close examination of the changes enacted, this book sets out to foster that discussion.

Knaf Alice Carolin Susanne The Mongol-Okhotsk Ocean in Mongolia (Hangai-Hentei Basin)

The Mongol-Okhotsk Belt extends from the present Sea of Okhotsk in the northeast to Central Mongolia in the southwest and represents a part of the widespread Central Asian Orogenic Belt. The Mongol-Okhotsk suture zone was generated during the Late Paleozoic to Mid Mesozoic by the subduction of the Mongol-Okhotsk Ocean. The remnant permits to study the enigmatic tectonic evolution of the paleo-ocean. A suitable place for analyzing the geodynamic development of the Mongol-Okhotsk Ocean is given by the Hangai-Hentei basin in Mongolia that is regarded as an accretionary wedge terrane located northwest of the suture zone. This research yielded new data from lithostratigaphic and sedimentological investigations as well as provenance analyses on the Silurian to Carboniferous northern active continental margin of the Mongol-Okhotsk Ocean. The work is focused on the Carboniferous trench basin turbidite series of the Gorkhi Formation within the Hangai-Hentei basin. Field work and sample collection in the Hangai-Hentei basin provided new data for defining the type and timing of ocean formation, the subduction and the opposing margins.

Uncontrolled rapid urban growth due to built-up area expansion over the last few decades has created critical problems to urban planners. Therefore, it is worth to identify spatial distribution pattern of built-up area in a town. Remote Sensing (RS) and Geographical Information System (GIS) provide a great potential for urban data collection & spatial analysis and not much academic literature exists on how to best utilize these technologies for urban studies. Traditional approaches to data collection and analysis no longer adequate to provide updated information for urban planners. This book, therefore, introduces alternative techniques for data collection, updating, detection of built-up area change and unauthorised constructions, identifying urban spatial distribution pattern considering built-up area density. New GIS spatial analysis techniques such as weighted mean centre and spatial autocorrelation tools introduced. These analysis techniques should help to shed light on the field of urban planning, and should be especially useful to students and professionals in urban planning or anyone else who may be considering utilizing RS and GIS for urban spatial structure analysis.

The phenomenon of Iraq's Shia warlords and the militias they lead has significant implications for the conduct of the war against Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS), including for U.S. policy interests and for U.S. Landpower forces deployed in-country. In this monograph, Dr. Norman Cigar analyzes the rapid resurgence of the Shia militias and the warlords thanks to a mass popular mobilization in response to the severe ISIS threat to the country in 2014. The militias have played a key role in helping to stabilize the situation on the ground, while the Iraqi Army has been rebuilding with the help of the international Coalition. At the same time, the warlords have become significant political players who have an impact on issues of interest to the United States, such as sectarian reconciliation and the formation of a National Guard in Sunni areas, which have implications for the future of Iraq's security and stability.

The other Kimmeridge Clay sample kimsrf 1 indicates kerogen type I. The Wealdenoil sand shows intense biodegradation and plots in the area of a type II kerogen. The Osmington Millsoil sand plots in type I kerogen area, and also shows intense biodegradation. The Libya oil iscomprised of a type II/III kerogen, similar to the R828 oil sample which additionally shows oxidizingmarine conditions. Iraq oil plots in the area of a type II kerogen and was deposited under marinehypersaline conditions. The last sample, the Schwedeneck oil, was deposited under rather oxidizingconditions and sterane analysis suggests an early oil window stage.

Emba Tampang Allo Rainfall Thresholds and Slope Stability Assessments in Indonesia

Landsliding is one of the most damaging natural disasters in tropical countries, such as Indonesia, especially on the mountainous and hilly terrain area. The study area, Wadas Lintang Watershed in Wonosobo District, Central Java Province, experiences landslide in yearly basis. Due to landslide, the area has been facing the loss of human lives and damages to properties. The landslide events commonly occur in rainy season, thus the rainfall can be regarded as the main trigger in the area. The condition has been being problematic due to lack of availability of information pertaining correlation between rainfall and persistent landslide events in this area. As respond to the problem, this book provides rainfall thresholds for landslide initiation in the area, combined with assessment of terrain hydrological properties, and modelling of slope stability in the area.

Muhammed Abed Mazeel Iraq Oil and Gas Papers 2010

This book contains my articles from 2010. I have tried to examine some of the technical problems in the current oil and gas industry in Iraq. In the geology/geophysics and reservoir engineering section, I used the available information and in some cases, I estimate to fill the gap in the existing data.International contracts usually differ from case to case or from field to field; in Iraq, TSC and PSC still have unclear contract conditions and public information is not enough for the detailed calculation needed for exact NPV and IRR. Additional concerns are the cost estimation down structure and geopolitical strategies of Iraq. The management of the existing oil and gas institutions in Iraq is one of the most urgent problems the country is facing. The restructuring of companies and the Ministry of Oil is generally addressed in my articles. I have also illustrated many possibilities for the restructuring and reorganization of the development of managerial and marketing systems. In the rebuilding of the country, and specially, the oil and gas industry in Iraq, there needs to be more investigation into how to optimize the exploitation of natural resources for better economic benefits for all parties (the owner of the resources as well as International oil companies). The close cooperation between the Ministry of Oil in Iraq and the IOC´s and state oil should be open for reorganization and restructuring in order to benefit the entire country and to develop the process of integratio...

Formation Control of Multi-Agent Systems: A Graph Rigidity Approach Marcio de Queiroz, Louisiana State University, USA Xiaoyu Cai, FARO Technologies, USA Matthew Feemster, U.S. Naval Academy, USA A comprehensive guide to formation control of multi-agent systems using rigid graph theory This book is the first to provide a comprehensive and unified treatment of the subject of graph rigidity-based formation control of multi-agent systems. Such systems are relevant to a variety of emerging engineering applications, including unmanned robotic vehicles and mobile sensor networks. Graph theory, and rigid graphs in particular, provides a natural tool for describing the multi-agent formation shape as well as the inter-agent sensing, communication, and control topology. Beginning with an introduction to rigid graph theory, the contents of the book are organized by the agent dynamic model (single integrator, double integrator, and mechanical dynamics) and by the type of formation problem (formation acquisition, formation manoeuvring, and target interception). The book presents the material in ascending level of difficulty and in a self-contained manner; thus, facilitating reader understanding. Key features: Uses the concept of graph rigidity as the basis for describing the multi-agent formation geometry and solving formation control problems. Considers different agent models and formation control problems. Control designs throughout the book progressively build upon each other. Provides a primer on rigid graph theory. Combines theory, computer simulations, and experimental results. Formation Control of Multi-Agent Systems: A Graph Rigidity Approach is targeted at researchers and graduate students in the areas of control systems and robotics. Prerequisite knowledge includes linear algebra, matrix theory, control systems, and nonlinear systems.

Seminar paper from the year 2011 in the subject Economy - Environment economics, grade: A, Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, course: Cost-Benefit Analysis , language: English, abstract: This cost-benefit analysis estimates the net benefit of desealing through the promotion of permeable pavement. The area of study is the city of Munich. The city of Munich subsidizes through a program surface desealing by consumer subsidies for permeable pavement that should replace currently impermeable paved areas. The consumer subsidies should result in a decline of the impermeable paved area of 15 percent from 1996 to 2020. The major cost component is the marginal excess tax burden that occurs from the taxes that have to be raised to finance the subsidies. The major benefit is the reduction of the flooding risk due to the higher infiltration of water into the soil. The payback of the project is estimated for 2077. The net benefits per m² permeable pavement are positive in comparison with impermeable pavement. The main reason for the late payback of the project are the high subsidies paid. A scenario analysis shows that the lowering of the consumer subsidies per m² of permeable pavement will result in a payback of the project in 2036.

This book covers policy proposals and interim contracts, assesses the positions of various Iraqi political actors and examines the potential significance for international foreign policy goals in Iraq. Despite a lack of progress in reaching agreements on the hydro-carbon sector and revenue sharing legislation to set new conditions for the management of the country's significant oil and gas resources, development in Iraq's oil and gas sector is moving forward. The passage of the oil and gas sector framework and revenue sharing legislation will be seen as significant milestones by International governments and International Oil Companies (IOC´s). This would provide evidence of the Iraqi government's dedication to promoting political reconciliation and providing a solid foundation for long term economic development in Iraq. Interim revenue sharing mechanisms have been introduced due to the lack of new legislation. Additionally, both the Federal Government (the Federal Oil Ministry-MoO) and the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) (the Regional Ministry of Natural Resources and Energy) have made oil and gas development deals with foreign firms. The MoO is working with existing regulation from the previous political and administrational regime, while the Regional Ministry of Resource and Energy Kurdistan-Iraq has designed its own laws and regulations, which the Federal Government has not yet recognized. There is wide recognition among Iraqis of the importance of oil and...

Fabio Ayres, Rangaraj Rangayyan, J.E. Leo Desautels Analysis of Oriented Texture with Applications to the Detection of Architectural Distortion in Mammograms

The presence of oriented features in images often conveys important information about the scene or the objects contained; the analysis of oriented patterns is an important task in the general framework of image understanding. As in many other applications of computer vision, the general framework for the understanding of oriented features in images can be divided into low- and high-level analysis. In the context of the study of oriented features, low-level analysis includes the detection of oriented features in images; a measure of the local magnitude and orientation of oriented features over the entire region of analysis in the image is called the orientation field. High-level analysis relates to the discovery of patterns in the orientation field, usually by associating the structure perceived in the orientation field with a geometrical model. This book presents an analysis of several important methods for the detection of oriented features in images, and a discussion of the phase portrait method for high-level analysis of orientation fields. In order to illustrate the concepts developed throughout the book, an application is presented of the phase portrait method to computer-aided detection of architectural distortion in mammograms.Table of Contents: Detection of Oriented Features in Images / Analysis of Oriented Patterns Using Phase Portraits / Optimization Techniques / Detection of Sites of Architectural Distortion in Mammograms

Seminar paper from the year 2014 in the subject History - America, grade: 1,3, University of Tubingen (Seminar für Zeitgeschichte), course: Readings in Recent American Military History, SS 2012, language: English, abstract: This thesis analyzes 50 central texts from the five neoconservative writers Charles Krauthammer, William Kristol, Robert Kagan, Richard Perle and Norman Podhoretz to portrait their contributions to the public debate about foreign policy after the Cold War. At the heart of the analysis lies the preemptive strike launched on Iraq in March 2003 and its aftermath. All of the authors under research have openly advocated this decision prior to the invasion, one main question for this thesis is therefore how they assessed the actual implementation of the strategy and its consequences. The central Chapter 2 on the assessment of Iraq seeks to answer what they have learned from Iraq. Before I can answer this adequately, it is necessary to analyze their writings prior to 9/11 and then between 9/11 and the invasion of Iraq. I will do this in Chapter 1 and thereby answer the question, what broader lessons the authors have learned from history. Knowing the answer is necessary to understand why they proposed a preemptive strike on Iraq and what their intentions were. Chapter 3 then seeks to connect these insights from Chapter 1 and 2 to shed light on the overall lessons that the authors have learned from their experiences since the end of the Cold War and 8 years of fore...

National Defense University, Jr. William A. Knowlton The Surge. General Petraeus and the Turnaround in Iraq

When General David H. Petraeus, USA, took command of Multi-National Force-Iraq (MNF-I) on February 10, 2007, beginning his 3d tour and 28th month in Iraq, the situation was grim. Increasing sectarian violence had led to an escalation of killings of civilians in Iraq, with up to 150 corpses being found daily in Baghdad.1 The government of Prime Minister Nouri al- Maliki was viewed by almost everyone as ineffective at best, and the U.S. military strategy was not well defined and clearly not working. Iraq appeared to be sliding out of control toward civil war or disintegration, and the United States appeared to be headed inexorably toward defeat- another Vietnam. Popular sentiment held that the best course of action was to cut our losses and disengage from a fight we were losing. General George Casey, USA, the outgoing commander of MNF-I, had supported a gradual drawdown of U.S. forces and a handoff of security tasks to Iraqi forces even as the situation got worse.

Sujeeta Sharma Production Economics and Marketing Performance of Coffee in Parbat, Nepal

Coffee is one of the most important cash generative crops in the mid hill regions of Nepal. This study examines the production economics along with marketing performance of coffee in Pakuwa VDC of Parbat district, Nepal. The Survey was done in June 2014. Data collection was conducted through semi-structured pre-tested questionnaire administered on 40 farmer respondents selected randomly. Gross margin analysis, profitability index and the benefit-cost ratio (B-C ratio) were used to analyze the production economics of coffee in the study area.

Ahmed Isah Haruna Review of Geology, Geochemistry and Origin of Gypsum Mineralization in Chad Basin (North Eastern Nigeria)

Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 1998 in the subject Geography / Earth Science - Geology, Mineralogy, Soil Science, grade: Research, Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (Geology Programme), course: Economic Gelogy/ Mineral Exploration, language: English, abstract: A field trip was conducted in order to evaluate the geology, geochemistry and origin of gypsum mineralization in the Nigerian sector of Chad Basin, part of which is the research area. The gypsum mineralization underlain the whole area of about 2247.75km2 within the Chad Basin and comprises of five different forms; Detrital, Balatino - Laminated, Selenite, SatinSpar, and Alabaster. The thickness of the gypsum forms increases with depth, and they are emplaced at various depths. All the gypsum forms retained traces of former lamination except detrital gypsum therefore lamination is a primary structure. The chemical composition of the gypsum forms showed that they are all high grade (over 70% CaSO4 . 2H2O). The moisture content could be used to show fractured areas where circulation of water is easier. Alabaster gypsum is the heaviest as such more suitable for cement works. The chemical composition of all the gypsum forms revealed high trace elements content which could be the product of the brine mixing phenomenon. The petrographic studies of the Balatino, Selenite, SatinSpar and Alabaster gypsum forms revealed that they all recrystallized from the primary laminations during the early diagenesis. The recrystall...

Harith Al Qarawee Imagining the Nation. Nationalism, Sectarianism and Socio-Political Conflict in Iraq

When the statue of Saddam Hussein was pulled down in Baghdad’s Firdous square, Iraq was entering a new phase of uncertainty. This is a country whose history has been shaped by foreign occupations, authoritarianism, wars and violence. Its identity was always a matter of controversy. The incompatibility between Iraq as a territorial entity and the various cultural identities of its population made it more difficult for Iraqis to imagine their ‘Nation’. This Identity Problem has been made worse by a political power which has always based itself on the hegemony politics of exclusion. Through a long journey in the historical processes and socio-political conflicts, the author tells the story of a country devastated by its legacy, seeking to reconcile with itself and re-imagine its nationhood.

This new book explains conventional models and develops new powerful algorithms for “double-drawdown” and “advanced phase delay” early-time analysis – importantly, it is now possible to predict both horizontal and vertical permeabilities, plus pore pressure, within seconds of well logging in very low mobility reservoirs. Other subjects including inertial Forchheimer effects in contamination modeling and time-dependent flowline volumes are also developed.
