Charcoal rot of mungbean caused by Macrophomina phaseolina is a destructive disease of mungbean. Nowadays, scientists are in search of alternative environmental friendly disease management strategies to reduce the negative effects of synthetic agrochemicals on environment. The present study was designed to control the pathogen and the disease by using different species of a biological control agent Trichoderma, and extracts and dry biomass of Sisymbrium irio, a weed of family Brassicaceae. Root and leaf extracts of the weed showed the best inhibitory effect on growth of M. phaseolina in laboratory bioassays. among the seven species of Trichoderma, T. harzianum showed the best antagonistic activity against the pathogen. In pot trials, T. harzianum in combination with 1% dry leaf biomass of S. irio as soil amendment enhanced plant resistance against the fungal pathogen and significantly increased grain yield of mungbean by 62% and 805% over negative and positive control treatments, respectively. Pesticides-free bananas are grown by small-scale farmers in the Philippines without agricultural pesticides during production and postharvest phases. Fruit are marketed abroad and demand in domestic market is increasing, as well. This book showcased the non-chemical approaches of managing crown rot disease and maintaining the overall quality of pesticides-free banana fruit. These are the application of biocontrol agents using native epiphytic Trichoderma harzianum DGA02 and Bacillus amyloliquefaciens DGA14 isolated from the banana fruit surfaces, application of generally regarded as safe (GRAS) compounds such as salts and organic acids, and hot water treatments. The detailed protocol, mechanisms of action, efficacy, and limitations of use of the technologies in managing crown rot disease are elucidated. Future directions of non-chemical approaches in managing postharvest diseases of banana are likewise discussed.

Banana crown rot is one of most important postharvest diseases of banana that reduces the quality and postharvest life of the fruit. It affects export of fruits in all banana producing countries including Ethiopia. There is no adequate information in Ethiopia about the importance of banana crown rot, pathogens that cause the disease and suitable methods for its management. The objectives of this study were to assess intensity of banana crown rot, to isolate and identify fungal complex associated with banana crown rot, and to evaluate the integrated effect of inorganic salt, hot water and fungicide treatments as management options of this disease. Inorganic salt at two levels integrated with three levels of water temperature and fungicide at four levels were evaluated towards the management of crown rot. The experiment was laid out in CRD with factorial combination. There was a highly significant (P<0.0001) effect on pH, TSS, TA, firmness and color of banana fruits due to combined application of treatments. In conclusion, the study revealed high occurrence and distribution of diverse fungi associated with postharvest banana crown rot.

Contract farming is defined as a system for the production and supply of agricultural or horticultural produce under forward contracts between producers/suppliers and buyers. Contract farming offers the advantage of reduced capital investment, reduced risk of price fluctuation, guaranteed returns and provision of technical assistance to the farmers. The study was purposively conducted in Burdwan district of West Bengal, India, as the state is the second highest producer of potato in the country. Contract farming helped the farmers to diversify their farm, increased the employment opportunity and area under potato. It also helped the farmers to get more net benefit from potato. After engaging in contract farming the farmers used various inputs for potato cultivation more judiciously but not in higher quantity than the non contract farmers. There was not any major environmental disadvantage of potato contract farming except the emergence of new pest and diseases of potato. The knowledge level of the contract farmers about potato production technology and the disease management practices of potato were significantly higher than the non contract farmers..........

Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA (RAPD) is a low cost and simple genetic characterization tool that can be used to genetically characterize the different strains of Phytophthora infestans and lead towards a better management of the late blight disease. However, the RAPD fingerprinting is one which requires an extensive optimization in terms of the conditions and the adherence to a stringent protocol.The aim of this study was to design and apply a series of experiments to optimize the RAPD protocol through the use of a set of DNA template concentrations. In this study, genomic DNA was extracted from 2 P.infestans isolates originating from potato and 1 P.infestans isolate emanating from tomato. The genomic DNA obtained from each isolates was diluted to obtain a set of DNA concentrations which were used for the screening of 30 RAPD primers and for further testing to identify the best DNA template concentration. The Choanephora cucurbitarum causes a stem and leaf rot of Withania somnifera A treehopper, feeds on the apical portions of the stem, making them rough and woody in appearance and brown in colour. The main chemical constituents are alkaloids and steroidal lactones. These include tropine and cuscohygrine. Healthy seeds and propagules are the basic requirement for producing good grains, fruits and vegetables needed for human survival and perpetuation. Dispersal of microbial plant pathogens via seeds and propagules has assumed more importance than other modes of dispersal, as infected seeds and propagules have the potential to become the primary sources of carrying pathogen inoculum for subsequent crops. Several diseases transmitted through seeds and propagules have been shown to have the potential to damage economies as a result of huge quantitative and qualitative losses in numerous crops. Hence, it is essential to rapidly detect, identify and differentiate the microbial plant pathogens present in seeds and propagules precisely and reliably, using sensitive techniques. Microbial Plant Pathogens: Detection and Management in Seeds and Propagules provides a comprehensive resource on seed-borne and propagule-borne pathogens. Information on the biology of microbial pathogens, including genetic diversity, infection process and survival mechanisms of pathogens and epidemiology of diseases caused by them, are discussed critically and in detail to highlight weak links in the life cycles of the pathogens. Development of effective disease management systems, based on the principles of exclusion and eradication of pathogens and immunization of crop plants to enhance the levels of resistance of cultivars to diseases, has been effective to keep the pathogens at bay. Although application of different chemicals may reduce the disease incidence effectively, biological management of crop diseases, employing potential biological control agents have to be preferred to preserve the agroecosystems. Greater efforts have to be made to integrate compatible strategies to enhance the effectiveness of diseases management systems.
