Nitrogen is arguably the most important nutrient required by plants. However, the availability of nitrogen is limited in many soils and although the earth's atmosphere consists of 78.1% nitrogen gas (N2) plants are unable to use this form of nitrogen. To compensate , modern agriculture has been highly reliant on industrial nitrogen fertilizers to achieve maximum crop productivity. However, a great deal of fossil fuel is required for the production and delivery of nitrogen fertilizer. Moreover carbon dioxide (CO2) which is released during fossil fuel combustion contributes to the greenhouse effect and run off of nitrate leads to eutrophication of the waterways. Biological nitrogen fixation is an alternative to nitrogen fertilizer. It is carried out by prokaryotes using an enzyme complex called nitrogenase and results in atmospheric N2 being reduced into a form of nitrogen diazotrophic organisms and plants are able to use (ammonia). It is this process and its major players which will be discussed in this book. In developing countries, adoption of new agricultural technologies is often hampered by a lake of chemical fertilizers. The high cost of chemical fertilizers, nitrogen ones, is often prohibitive to small and marginal farmers. In developed countries, where very high rates of nitrogen fertilizers are used, pollution is often a concern. It is, therefore, important to explore alternative sources of nitrogen to partially meet the nitrogen requirement. Biological nitrogen fixation offers this alternative, and also offers an economically attractive and ecologically sound means of reducing external inputs and improving internal resources. Establishment of new artificial associations, as mentioned before, the nitrogen fixing capacity of symbiotic systems is very significant, but the host and organism specificity of different plant-bacterium association for atmospheric nitrogen fixation is much wider. This feature of the association systems turned attention to creating new artificial system between diazotrophic bacteria and different higher plants. In this context, the aim of the present book was to evaluate whether nitrogen fixing cyanobacteria, specially Nostoc as biofertilizers.

Early biological treatment studies with the raw leachate did not yield high COD and nitrogen removals. In order to improve biological treatability, the landfill leachate was subjected to pretreatment by chemical coagulation-flocculation followed by air stripping of ammonia. The pretreated leachate was subjected to aerobic biological treatment in an aeration tank by fed-batch operation. In order to improve the extent of COD and ammonium nitrogen removals, pretreated leachate was subjected to adsorbent supplemented biological treatment in an aeration tank operated in fed-batch mode by using powdered zeolite (PZ) and powdered activated carbon (PAC) as adsorbents. Chemical oxidation was used to further reduce COD content of landfill leachate after PAC added biological treatment. Three oxidizing agents (H2O2, Fenton’s reagent, NaOCl) were used in different concentrations for chemical oxidation.

Nitrogen (N) is a nutrient essential to all forms of life. N in the biosphere is highly reactive and is rapidly cycled. Although N is the most abundant element in the atmosphere, it's a precious commodity -- a limiting nutrient -- in most undisturbed natural systems. This study was carried out for a preliminary understanding of terrestrial N cycle with Indian agroecosystem in particular.The major N pools and fluxes of agroecosystem with its allied consumer sectors of human, livestock including poultry, their products and by-products were estimated for the recent period. The temporal changes to these estimated pools and fluxes resulting from various anthropogenic influences were also studied. In agroecosystem, the major inputs to N cycle include wet deposition as nitrate nitrogen through rainfall, biological nitrogen fixation by nitrogen fixing leguminous and other crops, and dry N deposition by use of inorganic nitrogenous Fertilizers.The total crop N pool, being the largest(including economic and residual)was estimated.The major estimated consumer pools and fluxes include human (& their related fluxes such as food consumption, nitrogenous wastes,livestock & poultry,its waste etc.

Present study was aimed at isolation and biochemical characterization of Rhizobium and Azospirillum strains from roots and rhizospheric soil of wheat and maize (at tillering and anthesis stage) growing under different moisture regimes in the field and under induced water stress in pots. The survival efficiency as measured by log cfu/g, carbon/nitrogen utilization pattern determined by QTS, random amplification of polymorphic DNA analyses, phytohormone production and 16sRNA sequence analysis were done for isolated strains. The efficiency of isolated strains to promote plant growth and development was tested under induced water stress conditions in reinoculation studies. Rhizobium and Azospirillum isolated from arid field and induced water stress in pots showed the potential to serve as inocula to promote growth and yield of plants grown in moisture deficit soil.

Application of mathematical models in design and operation of biological nutrient removal systems is becoming more important with the legislations getting stricter. Recent developments in computer technology enabled development of computer programs that are able to solve complex models required to describe the processes taking place in activated sludge plants. In this study, methods for determining COD and nitrogen fractions and kinetic and stoichiometric parameters for domestic and industrial wastewaters are evaluated, and wastewater is fractionated using actual plant measurements and results of previous studies in literature. In addition, IWAQ Activated Sludge Model Number 1 (ASM1) is applied to Comodepur Wastewater Treatment Plant Italy using ASM 1 run-time simulation environment. Due to limitations of the software for simulating the behavior of the WWTP, benchmark configuration of the model had been used and Post Denitrification has not been included in the study. Mostly default kinetic and stoichiometric parameters offered by IWAQ Task Group are used in simulations some of them had been calibrated to get closer values to the measured ones.

Field testing of these transgenic cottons proved that Bt cotton hybrids are not only more productive but also profitable over traditional non-Bt cottons. Nitrogen is a major macro nutrient, It is an essential part of amino acids and nucleic acids which are building blocks of protein and thus are essential to all life on Earth. Two Bt hybrids studied (RCH 134 and RCH 317) were physiologically superior to non-Bt hybrid ‘LHH 144’ and the inbuilt bollworm resistance of Bt hybrids was the cause for this superiority. Performance of cotton was markedly improved by N fertilization up to 180 kg N/ha in terms of growth and yield attributes, yield and nutrient uptake. Bt hybrids can prove more productive under low or no N fertilization and thus are suitable for cultivation in soils with low available Nitrogen.

Invasive species have a critical and growing effect upon natural areas. They can modify, degrade, or destroy wildland ecosystem structure and function, and reduce native biodiversity. Landscape-level solutions are needed to address these problems. Conservation biologists seek to limit such damage and restore ecosystems using a variety of approaches. One such approach is biological control: the deliberate importation and establishment of specialized natural enemies, which can address invasive species problems and which should be considered as a possible component of restoration. Biological control can be an effective tool against many invasive insects and plants but it has rarely been successfully employed against other groups. Safety is of paramount concern and requires that the natural enemies used be specialized and that targeted pests be drivers of ecological degradation. While modern approaches allow species to be selected with a high level of security, some risks do remain. However, as in all species introductions, these should be viewed in the context of the risk of failing to reduce the impact of the invasive species. This unique book identifies the balance among these factors to show how biological control can be integrated into ecosystem restoration as practiced by conservation biologists. Alike all other hill dwellers of the world, shifting cultivation, commonly known as 'Jhum', is the traditional agronomic practice among the indigenous people of hilly tracts of Bangladesh. This age old cultivation system affects, mainly negatively, on soil environment and worsens the upland watershed health. For investigating this hypothesis, a study was conducted at three pair sites viz: Simina Para, Kark Mohajon Para and At- mile area of Sadar upazila under Khagarachari district to determine the effects of shifting cultivation on soil environment. Both soil physico-chemical properties and the biochemical and biological properties of soil microbes were studied. The differences in microbial population count and population composition may not be universal for all shifting cultivation sites; however, it explains the unavoidability in the variations of the biological and biochemical characteristics of soil microflora in shifting cultivated areas and emphasizes the necessity of taking this factor into consideration in management of soils in fellow lands after shifting cultivation.

Lack of adequate information on the culture of cucumber has been a major drawback in its production. Since available research, mainly from temperate areas and other production systems may not apply to greenhouse production in tropical highlands, this research was designed to evaluate the influence of four nitrogen sources and three mulching materials on growth, yield and quality of greenhouse grown cucumber ‘Ashley’. It is recommended that potassium nitrate or urea be used as a source of nitrogen while transparent polyethylene or straw mulch be used as mulching material

Nitrogen is arguably the most important nutrient required by plants. However, the availability of nitrogen is limited in many soils and although the earth's atmosphere consists of 78.1% nitrogen gas (N2) plants are unable to use this form of nitrogen. To compensate , modern agriculture has been highly reliant on industrial nitrogen fertilizers to achieve maximum crop productivity. However, a great deal of fossil fuel is required for the production and delivery of nitrogen fertilizer. It is carried out by prokaryotes using an enzyme complex called nitrogenase and results in atmospheric N2 being reduced into a form of nitrogen diazotrophic organisms and plants are able to use (ammonia).
