Offers data, examples, and applications supporting the use of the mechanical threshold stress (MTS) model Written by Paul S. Follansbee, an international authority in the field, this book explores the underlying theory, mechanistic basis, and implementation of the mechanical threshold stress (MTS) model. Readers are introduced to such key topics as mechanical testing, crystal structure, thermodynamics, dislocation motion, dislocation–obstacle interactions, hardening through dislocation accumulation, and deformation kinetics. The models described in this book support the emerging theme of Integrated Computational Materials Engineering (ICME) by offering a foundation for the bridge between length scales characterizing the mesoscale (mechanistic) and the macroscopic. Fundamentals of Strength begins with a chapter that introduces various approaches to measuring the strength of metals. Next, it covers: Structure and bonding Contributions to strength Dislocation–obstacle interactions Constitutive law for metal deformation Further MTS model developments Data analysis: deriving MTS model parameters The next group of chapters examines the application of the MTS model to copper and nickel, BCC metals and alloys, HCP metals and alloys, austenitic stainless steels, and heavily deformed metals. The final chapter offers suggestions for the continued development and application of the MTS model. To help readers fully understand the application of the MTS model, the author presents two fictional materials along with extensive data sets. In addition, end-of-chapter exercises give readers the opportunity to apply the models themselves using a variety of data sets. Appropriate for both students and materials researchers, Fundamentals of Strength goes beyond theory, offering readers a model that is fully supported with examples and applications.

Alloys are materials having metallic properties and are composed of two or more elements, at least one of which is a metal. In the case of aluminum alloys, most of them contain 90 to 96% aluminum. Aluminum alloys are divided into two categories, wrought alloys and cast alloys. Aluminum casting alloys are used in a large number of applications including automobiles, trucks, transmission of electricity, development of transportation infrastructures, and in the aerospace and other industries.Over the years, aluminum-copper (Al-Cu) cast alloys have been increasingly investigated, the reason being that copper has a significant impact on the strength and hardness of aluminum castings at both ambient and elevated service temperatures. Due to the presence of copper, the mechanical properties of these alloys may be improved via age hardening through the formation of Al2Cu precipitates following aging treatment. This book will first introduce and summarize all about the Al-Cu, LPDC and types of casting, for the objectives, results and conclusions of this study, you need to follow the author's coming publications.

Fady Elsayed Microstructure and Properties of Mg-Sn-Ca alloys with 3. Al additions

Technical demands for magnesium alloys are sufficient room, and elevated temperature mechanical properties, as well as corrosion resistance according to desired application. A new class of magnesium alloys based on the Mg-Sn system has been studied with many ternary alloying elements with emphasis on the Mg-Sn-Ca system due to their attractive property profile especially concerning creep resistance. This research work investigates the effect of 3 wt.% Al additions on two selected Mg- Sn-Ca alloys namely the Mg-3Sn-2Ca (TX32) alloy, and the Mg-9Sn-1Ca (TX91)alloy at different temper conditions, with the aim of improving room temperature mechanical properties, and corrosion resistance. A comparison of experimental results for the new Mg-Sn-Al-Ca (TAX) alloys, with their base Mg-Sn-Ca (TX) alloys, is performed, and explicitly discussed. The results showed enhanced hardening response in some of the alloys while the corrosion resistance deteriorated significantly. Al additions were found to have a favorable effect on strength of Mg-Sn-Ca(TX) alloys while they caused rapid decrease in their corrosion resistance.

Transition metals open up new opportunities for synthesis, because their means of bonding and their reaction mechanisms differ from those of the elements of the s and p blocks. In the last two decades the subject has mushroomed – established reactions are seeing both technical improvements and increasing numbers of applications, and new reactions are being developed. The practicality of the subject is demonstrated by the large number of publications coming from the process development laboratories of pharmaceutical companies, and its importance is underlined by the fact that three Nobel prizes have been awarded for discoveries in this field in the 21st Century already. Organic Synthesis Using Transition Metals, 2nd Edition considers the ways in which transition metals, as catalysts and reagents, can be used in organic synthesis, both for pharmaceutical compounds and for natural products. It concentrates on the bond-forming reactions that set transition metal chemistry apart from «classical» organic chemistry. Each chapter is extensively referenced and provides a convenient point of entry to the research literature. Topics covered include: introduction to transition metals in organic synthesis coupling reactions C-H activation carbonylative coupling reactions alkene and alkyne insertion reactions electrophilic alkene and alkyne complexes reactions of alkyne complexes carbene complexes h3- or p-allyl -allyl complexes diene, dienyl and arene complexes cycloaddition and cycloisomerisation reactions For this second edition the text has been extensively revised and expanded to reflect the significant improvements and advances in the field since the first edition, as well as the large number of new transition metal-catalysed processes that have come to prominence in the last 10 years – for example the extraordinary progress in coupling reactions using “designer” ligands, catalysis using gold complexes, new opportunities arising from metathesis chemistry, and C-H activation – without neglecting the well established chemistry of metals such as palladium. Organic Synthesis Using Transition Metals, 2nd Edition will find a place on the bookshelves of advanced undergraduates and postgraduates working in organic synthesis, catalysis, medicinal chemistry and drug discovery. It is also useful for practising researchers who want to refresh and enhance their knowledge of the field.

Extractive metallurgy is the art and science of extracting metals from their ores and refining them. The production of metals and alloys from these source materials is still one of the most important and fundamental industries in both developed and developing economies around the world. The outputs and products are essential resources for the metallic, mechanical, electromagnetic, electrical and electronics industries (silicon is treated as a metal for these purposes). This series is devoted to the extraction of metals from ores, concentrates (enriched ores), scraps, and other sources and their refining to the state of either liquid metal before casting or to solid metals. The extraction and refining operations that are required may be carried out by various metallurgical reaction processes. Extractive Metallurgy 1 deals with the fundamentals of thermodynamics and kinetics of the reaction processes. Extractive Metallurgy 2 focuses on pyrometallurgical, hydrometallurgical, halide and electro-metallurgical (conversion) processes. Extractive Metallurgy 3 deals with the industrial processing operations, technologies, and process routes, in other words the sequence of steps or operations used to convert the ore to metal. Processes and operations are studied using the methodology of “chemical reaction engineering”. As the fundamentals of the art and science of Extractive Metallurgy are infrequently taught as dedicated university or engineering schools courses, this series is intended both for students in the fields of Metallurgy and Mechanical Engineering who want to acquire this knowledge, and also for engineers put in charge of the operation of an industrial production unit or the development of a new process, who will need the basic knowledge of the corresponding technology.

The connection between the quantum behavior of the structure elements of a substance and the parameters that determine the macroscopic behavior of materials has a major influence on the properties exhibited by different solids. Although quantum engineering and theory should complement each other, this is not always the case. This book aims to demonstrate how the properties of materials can be derived and predicted from the features of their structural elements, generally electrons. In a sense, electronic structure forms the glue holding solids together and it is central to determining structural, mechanical, chemical, electrical, magnetic, and vibrational properties. The main part of the book is devoted to an overview of the fundamentals of density functional theory and its applications to computational solid-state physics and chemistry. The author shows the technique for construction of models and the computer simulation methods in detail. He considers fundamentals of physical and chemical interatomic bonding in solids and analyzes the predicted theoretical outcome in comparison with experimental data. He applies first-principle simulation methods to predict the properties of transition metals, semiconductors, oxides, solid solutions, and molecular and ionic crystals. Uniquely, he presents novel theories of creep and fatigue that help to anticipate, and prevent, possibly fatal material failures. As a result, readers gain the knowledge and tools to simulate material properties and design materials with desired characteristics. Due to the interdisciplinary nature of the book, it is suitable for a variety of markets from students to engineers and researchers.

Syed Kamil Nickel Free Titanium Based Shape Memory Alloys

Biomedical shape memory alloys are required to have a superior corrosion resistance, biocompatibility and stable shape memory properties. Among many shape memory alloys, only NiTi alloys have been widely applied for biomedical applications, because they satisfy the above requirements. However, it has been pointed out that pure nickel is a toxic element and cause nickel hypersensitivity. It is preferable to develop absolutely safe nickel free titanium based shape memory alloys composed of non-toxic elements such as niobium for biomedical applications. In this book, the effect of molybdenum addition in Ti-Nb binary alloy was investigated. Two alloys with varying compositions namely alloy 1 (Ti-26at%Nb) and alloy 2 (Ti-26at%Nb-0.1at%Mo) were developed. After homogenization and cold rolling, samples of dimensions 30×3×0.86 mm were prepared using diamond cutting machine. The prepared samples were solution treated and then subjected to different tests to evaluate their properties. There is slight increase in micro-hardness (Hv) with increase in molybdenum. XRD spectra revealed the presence of two phases in the solution treated samples, α-martensite (Ti4Nb) and retained austenite (β).

Thermal analysis is a useful technique for the study of solid phase transformations and has been widely applied to study precipitation in aluminium alloys, but the results are generally interpreted qualitatively. Quantitative interpretation of Differential Scanning Calorimetry(DSC) experiments on ternary aluminium-based alloys has been attempted, and can improve understanding of their thermodynamics and kinetics of precipitation. Three separate, distinctly kinetic models were used in the studying of the precipitation reactions. The analysis should help shed some light on solid state reactions in aluminium alloy, and should be especially useful to professionals in Engineering and Science fields, or anyone else who may be considering usage of aluminium alloys

Inhaltsangabe:Abstract: Changing market conditions have made it tougher on companies to stay competitive. Long-term customer bonding can provide a competitive advantage. Today's customers' wishes have put forth the need for experience marketing though. This trend has to be taken into account when planning on bonding with customers. One way to create a platform for experience is event marketing. This final thesis focuses specifically on the use of events with regard to customer relationship bonding. In this study, an answer will be provided to the following problem statement. Event marketing supports bonding by providing an opportunity for direct and personal contact between a company and its customers. Furthermore, customers are offered the possibility to experience a company and its products in a pleasurable surrounding. Events can either be business- or leisure-oriented, depending on the overall character of the event. Events provide a variety of advantages to both the company and its customer, ranging from cross-selling and exchange of information to risk and cost reductions. Event marketing integrates in the modern concept of customer relationship marketing by opening a constructive dialogue between the customer and the company. Customer relationships are built on trust which can be established by creating a special bond between a company and its customers. These bonds can exist on various levels and not all customers are suited for long-term bonding. To insure th...

Scientific Study from the year 2016 in the subject Biology - Botany, Bansthali University, language: English, abstract: Out of 90 naturally occurring elements, 53 are considered as heavy metals, however, not all of them have biological significance. Heavy metals cannot be smashed, but can only be altered from one state to another. On the basis of their solubility in physiological conditions, 17 heavy metals are obtainable for living cells and of significance for the organism and ecosystem. Among these metals, Fe, Mn and Mo are important as micronutrients; Cu, Co, Cr, Ni, V, W and Zn are noxious elements with high or low importance as trace elements. Most common heavy metals, namely, Cu, Cd and Zn create the major problem in contaminated soils that is completely different from organic pollutants. Unlike organic pollutants, these heavy metals cannot be biodegraded and therefore exist in the environment for extended periods of time. Hence, environmental pollution caused by these heavy metals becomes more frightening and tricky with ever increasing unplanned mining and unconstrained industrial activities. In present scenario of increasing industrialization, soil and water contamination is exceptionally alarming and widespread all over the developing world, including highly populated countries like China and India. Thus the toxicity of heavy metals in our environment is a worldwide problem and a growing hazard to the sustainable ecosystem. The present book is written on the basis ...

Our earth's crust is the ultimate source of all metallic elements present in the ecosystem. Globally there are 35 metals that concern us because of residential or occupational exposure; 23 of these are the heavy metals. In this study, the level of heavy metals pollution in poultry chicken (Gallus domesticus) at Karachi, Hyderabad and Thatta were investigated during the year 2007-9. A total 200 random poultry organs (liver, brain and heart) of same aged groups of chickens were collected from poultry shops of 6 selected locations, and 4 heavy metals Cd, Ni, Cu and Pb were analyzed. Based on results that all chickens samples were contaminated with Cadmium (Cd), Nickel (Ni), Copper (Cu) and Lead (Pb). Copper has been recorded as highest level contamination as compared to three other metals Cd, Ni, and Pb. During the study on the basis of feeds samples analyzing, metals may be have been transferred via poultry feeds to poultry chickens. The research techniques and results are helpful for graduate and research students of Biological Sciences, Environmental Science and Poultry Science students.
