We provided an analysis framework for analyzing and understanding electricity spot prices in deregulated European energy markets. We developed some econometric models to be suitable for use in such markets. First, we presented an overview of the electricity market. It enables us to identify the specific features of electricity spot prices and thus give us enough ground to propose the adequate model for modeling these prices. Next, we addressed the issue of modeling electricity spot prices in the oldest and the most promising power markets in the world, namely, the EEX and NordPool markets. To handle the dual the dual long memory phenomena encountered in both markets, price processes are modeled through an ARFIMA-FIGARCH model. Finally, we concentrated on the issues of building empirical models that consider the coexistence of long memory and non-linearity. We followed Zhang's hybrid methodology and introduced the new ARFIMA-LS-SVM model to describe both long memory and non-linearity simultaneously.

Master's Thesis from the year 2008 in the subject Business economics - Banking, Stock Exchanges, Insurance, Accounting, grade: 6.0 , University of Lausanne, 156 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: The Swiss electricity market has been facing structural changes in recent years due to market deregulation activities. This development has been accompanied by the emergence of spot markets where electricity is traded between producer and purchaser. Since the price charged to the end-customer turns out to be more exposed to market prices of electricity, the need forderivatives with a risk management purpose arises. A more recent asset class such as structured products may be used as a risk management tool. This paper focuses on the pricing of various structured products with the Swiss energy price indices as an underlying.Since electricity has particular features that result in a peculiar stochastic process, the pricing of electricity derivatives cannot rely on traditional pricing formulas that have been developed for equity or commodity underlyings. Rather, there is a need for a dynamic model that captures the unique characteristics of electricity. In this paper, a new jump diffusion process isproposed and estimated that is able to incorporate the Swiss electricity price properties.Building on this model, a Monte Carlo simulation is applied that allows one to price differing electricity derivatives that are embedded in structured products. Bachelor Thesis from the year 2004 in the subject Economics - Case Scenarios, grade: 1 (A), Vienna University of Economics and Business (New Media Lab), course: Baccalaureut Work, language: English, abstract: The liberalization of the European electricity market is supposed to reduce electricity prices by opening up to competition and by promoting integration of the common European market. Deregulation allows energy consumers to choose their electric energy supplier and therefore dissolves electric utility monopolies. The resulting re-regulation and restructuring of the electricity industry has created oppor-tunities and challenges that need to be addressed to ensure long-term capacity sustainability. The promise and benefit expectations of electricity market liberalization may need to be tempered by the reality of the process. Market liberalization of the electricity supply sector depends on many different factors and boundary conditions in the EU. In order to analyze these issues, we will use Austria as an example showing the development in liberalization, deregulation, and even re-regulation processes and the impact on the industry structure and final consumer pricing. Given the industry structure, incentives to invest in the Austrian transmission and distribution networks remain to be established. We will show that high inflexible taxes and monopoly protected transmission costs, both together account for 80% of the price of electricity. Moreover, only 20% of the electrici...

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2009 in the subject Economics - Other, grade: 5.0, University of Zurich (Sozialökonomisches Institut (SOI)), language: English, abstract: Matching is the part of economics that deals with the question of who gets what, e.g. who gets which jobs, who goes to which university, who receives which organ or who marries whom. During the second part of the last century, many markets have been discovered to have failed in providing the necessary conditions for efficient matches. These market failures have partly evolved on ethical or institutional grounds, but are more generally attributed to congestion or coordination problems caused by the inability of the market to make it safe for participants to act on their private information. For this reason, a variety of allocation mechanisms have been developed and subsequently tested in field and laboratory experiments for possible implementation in real-world applications. This work attempts at giving a condensed review of different matching mechanisms and the performance of algorithms that have been implemented for solving the problems in their respective environments. The theoretical properties of these mechanisms as described in the increasingly vast literature on matching design will be used as a benchmark to compare their relative performance in terms of overall efficiency. The results yield some basic insights in the varying success of the competing algorithms in practice, indicating that both the quality...

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2015 in the subject Energy Sciences, grade: 2.0, Charles University in Prague (Faculty of Social Sciences), course: Institute of Economic Studies, language: English, abstract: This work is focused on the topic of electricity pricing in the EU connected with the increasing use of renewable energy sources in electricity production and consumption. It provides background information related to the types of energy sources along with a summary of their benefits and drawbacks regarding both the environmental impact and financial costs. Furthermore, it involves both world and European electricity production statistics followed by an overview of the EU approach concerning the support of environment-friendly energy production methods. The core of the thesis is then an econometric panel data analysis based on the data collected from 13 member states of the EU over the period between 2010 and 2013 analysing two relationships. First, the impact of the share of renewable energy sources in the final electricity production on the European consumer electricity prices. Second, whether the replacement of fossil fuels by renewable energy sources causes a significant decrease in the CO2 emissions. In conclusion, this paper provides suggestions for further research based on the undertaken analyses. The results of the panel data analysis presented suggest that household electricity prices in the studied EU member states increase with the deployment of electricity produ...

Ladawn Haglund Limiting Resources. Market-Led Reform and the Transformation of Public Goods

The provision of public goods such as education, electricity, health, sanitation, and water used to be regarded as primarily the responsibility of governments, but in the 1980s privatization of such services spread and reliance on market mechanisms instead of governments became common in many parts of the world, including developing countries. The record of the past twenty-five years of market-led development, however, has not been encouraging. Not only has it failed to improve public services significantly, but it has also undermined democratic institutions and processes, reproduced authoritarian relations of power, and suppressed alternatives made possible by an increasing global acceptance of the importance of economic and social rights. In Limiting Resources, LaDawn Haglund seeks an understanding of public goods that can better serve the needs of people in developing countries today.Haglund critiques the narrow conception of public goods used in economics, which tends to limit the range of resources considered "public," and proposes an expanded conception drawing from multiple disciplines that incorporates issues of justice, inclusion, and sustainability. She then uses case studies of electricity and water provision in Central America to illuminate the conditions for success and the causes of failure in constructing adequate mechanisms for the supply of public goods. She follows with an analysis of political conflicts over privatization that reveals how neoliberal...

A behind-the-scenes exposure why our electricity system is headed for a state of emergency-and what can be done to head it off Most people don't realize that skyrocketing global energy demand and economic growth severely affect the supply of electricity. Between production (power plants) and delivery is an antiquated, «third-world» transmission grid that is in desperate need of hardening against breakdowns, terrorist attacks, inadequate carrying capacity, and operational obsolescence. And while electricity doesn't hold the headlines or dramatic power of oil, the ability to ensure its uninterrupted supply at a reasonable price is even more essential to global survival and prosperity. Lights Out is today's most detailed, in-depth examination of this largely unreported looming energy crisis. Written by one of the world's top electricity industry experts, this powerful book covers numerous hot button economic and political issues-free markets versus regulation; energy independence versus foreign imports; nuclear power, global warming, and other environmental issues; and much more. Beyond just uncovering and illuminating the problems, however, it proposes a comprehensive road map of technical solutions and regulatory reform from both the production and demand sides of the equation-a framework for rethinking, rebuilding, and enhancing the entire electricity production and delivery infrastructure. Prescriptive and provocative, Lights Out will redefine the simmering debate on how the world can-and must-act now to head off a global catastrophe, one that could eventually wreak even more havoc than the ongoing oil crisis. Jason Makansi is the President of Pearl Street, Inc., a consulting firm; Principal of PS Liquidity Advisors, an advisory service for energy technology companies raising capital; and Executive Director of the Energy Storage Council, a public-policy advocacy organization. A prolific author, respected industry thought leader, and seasoned communicator, Mr. Makansi has been analyzing the technological, business, and regulatory issues in electricity production and delivery for over twenty-five years. He earned a BS in chemical engineering from Columbia University. His earlier books include An Investor’s Guide to the Electricity Economy, also published by John Wiley & Sons, and Managing Steam: An Engineering Guide to Commercial, Industrial, and Utility Systems.

(PMI). PMI was in its infancy in terms of „going international”. In other words, PMI had neither an organized and international marketing conception nor a regular business to foreign customers and markets so far. Aim and object of this project was analyzing marketing opportunities for their product portfolio within different international markets and to approach adequate marketing strategies. Therefore data of international markets must be collected, evaluated and analyzed to put these results in a strategic order. This thesis deals with the development of foreign markets and how market entry could be realized. It focuses on explaining ways how to get there. The aim of this thesis is to prove which strategies are possible and to explain them in a general approach. The market research and defining the appropriate strategies where focused on the company’s product portfolio. The products are digital imaging software and equipment and are placed in the segment for professional photographers, photographic entrepreneurs and retail outlets. The scope of duties in this thesis consisted in gathering data and compiling reports for international sales opportunities in so far unknown international markets. Future distribution networks are expected to host high concentrations of distributed energy resources (DER) which include distributed generation, renewable energy sources, local storage systems and flexible loads. This book introduces a DER aggregation system (DERAS) that incorporates DER in the power system in an efficient and cost-effective manner. DERAS is developed based on the concept of the virtual power plant to facilitate the collective participation of the DER owners in the wholesale electricity market. The commercial interests of its stakeholders are incorporated in a trade subsystem that employs artificial neural networks to forecast the contribution of the aggregated DER population. Moreover, through the balancing and network support subsystems DERAS helps system and network operators to postpone or prevent excessive expenditures needed for network expansions or reinforcements. This book involves Systems Engineering to develop a scalable DERAS that fits in either competitively unbundled or traditionally consolidated electricity markets. Moreover, it presents an active network planning method that facilitates the development of Smart Grids.

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2016 in the subject Economics - International Economic Relations, grade: 1,0, University of Bayreuth (RW Fakultät), course: Entwicklungsökonomik, language: English, abstract: This bachelor thesis examines whether foreign aid to the energy sector has a significant impact on the development of a country's electricity sector by analysing the impact of aid disbursements to the energy sector on three different sector-specific outcome indicators in a fixed effects model. Besides, as heterogeneity of aid recipients might influence the effect, different regressions are run for low income, lower middle income and upper middle income countries. Results indicate that foreign aid to the energy sector affects electricity output positively and significantly, while not having an impact on generation capacity. The impact on electricity consumption per capita remains unclear. Furthermore, it seems to work more effectively in richer countries. This is robust to a set of sensitivity tests. Thus, the results emphasize the importance of disaggregating aid flows and the use of sector specific outcome variables in order to measure the impact of foreign aid.

BeschreibungThe work at hand participates with the energy transition toward decarbonized electricity production by providing a method to analyze the incentives for the dispatchable fleet to provide flexibility. It analyzes the signals set by the energy markets to investors and power plant operators regarding flexible power plant operation and the future requirement of thermal plant flexibilisation, with improvement suggestions. A method for the quantitative, long-term, high-resolution techno-economic assessment of an individual power plant's operational flexibility is proposed. It includes the single unit self-scheduling problem of a merchant power plant solved from a price-taker perspective in the day-ahead, intraday and frequency control markets, as well as a parametric power plant model suited for operational flexibility assessments. The retroactive observation of the merchant power plants' operation strategies in these markets is used to identify best practices in terms of market design for flexibility incentives. The value of operational flexibility improvements is quantified using various metrics, for different technologies and market environments. Despite their sensitivity to market design, technologies and cost structures, these results indicate that if investors further expect a three to five-year return on investment, the existing European conventional fleet is unlikely to experience a significant flexibilization.

A groundbreaking look at complexity theory and its implications in the world of finance Complexity theory tells us that processes with a large number of seemingly independent agents-such as free markets-can spontaneously organize themselves into a coherent system. In this fascinating book, Edgar Peters brings together scientific theory, the artistic process, and economics to show how the randomness and uncertainty of complexity theory can be applied to financial markets. Written in an engaging and accessible style, this is a thoughtful, conceptual look at the way free markets are, by their nature, continually evolving complex systems. Expanding on previous explorations of chaos theory, Peters draws on real-life examples ranging from the Asian crisis to America's love of conspiracy to show that complexity and randomness are necessary for the free markets to operate in a competitive manner.

The lack of resources has turned into a vexed problem in recent years, while people's desires keep increasing. In order to deal with such a conflict, these three basic questions should be answered by economic systems: What services and goods should be produced and in what quantities? How should these services and goods be produced? Who would be the end customers of such services und goods and how should these should be distributed? Master's Thesis from the year 2008 in the subject Environmental Sciences, grade: Passed, Assumption University of Thailand (College of Internet Distance Education (CIDE), School of Business Administration), course: Master Thesis Project, 100 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: This thesis presents a research project entitled 'A Hypothetical Enhanced Renewable Energy Utilization (EREU) Model for Electricity Generation in Thailand'. This research is motivated by Thailand's rapidly increasing electricity consumption caused by the country's long-standing above-average economic growth. Consequently, the rising electricity demand can only be satisfied by continuously growing electricity imports and thus creating a significant burden to Thailand's national budget. Further-more, Thailand is heavily dependent on natural gas reserves for electricity generation, however, these are expected to be depleted within only three decades and global price levels for conventional fuels are increasingly volatile with an ascending tendency as well. Therefore, Thailand faces an urgent need to strategically plan for the broad utili-zation of domestic renewable energy resources, which is essential for a more diversi-fied and thus sustainable electricity generation, as well as for the nation's endeavor to become an energy hub within the South East Asian region. Under these circumstances this research conducts a comprehensive literature re-view regarding...

This book seeks to discuss the inevitability of the process of capital markets integration. The question as to whether the integration of capital markets in East Africa is a worthwhile venture thus begging interrogation. In light of the varying growth levels, as well as striking contrasts in institutional development, legal and currency regimes of the individual East African countries, the author discusses whether the intended integration will present more opportunities rather than challenges and impediments to the free flow of capital in the region. The author further investigates how, if at all, the integration of capital markets can be achieved in the East African Community within the existing legal framework or what adjustments may be necessary in this respect. It is such discussions that lie at the crux of this book.
