Over the past few years the principalship has been under much scrutiny because of the increasing demand on school principals to raise the academic achievements of their students. The role of the secondary school principal has become very critical, thus in her book Factors that Contribute to the Success of Principals, Dinah Larbi synthesizes research to identify different types of behaviors which make secondary school principals successful. Guided by a qualitative research design, data were collected through individual interview with several principals. Conclusions from the resulting emerging themes suggest that successful principals are visionary instructional leaders who promote student learning and support teachers through collaboration. This book is a great asset to secondary school principals because it clearly delineates upon the necessary qualities which make them successful. A balanced view is also presented by examining issues which impinge on principals’ effectiveness. Teachers are called nation builders in every country and in every society. The role of teachers is of great importance. It is left to the teachers to inculcate personality characteristics, right values - the values of good citizenship producing law abiding and nation loving citizens. India has made considerable progress in school education since independence with reference to overall literacy, infrastructure and universal access and enrolment in schools. Two major developments in the recent years form the background to the present reform in teacher education - the political recognition of Universalization of Elementary Education (UEE) as a legitimate demand and the state commitment towards UEE in the form of the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009. The country has to address the need of supplying well qualified and professionally trained teachers in larger numbers in the coming years. At the same time, the demand for quality secondary education is steadily increasing. It is recommended that the aim should be to reach universal secondary education within a maximum of ten years. Given the problems of inadequate quality in most secondary schools due to poor infrastructure and insufficient and poorly equipped teachers, the need for addressing the professional education of secondary teachers acquires great importance. The education of teachers should be such that teachers should set an example and provide for their pupils the ideal of the citizens who is co...

She observes that Guidance and Counselling facilities, in secondary schools, are not adequate and effective. Therefore, the author recommends that the government trains and deploys teacher counsellors to schools for effective co-ordination of Guidance and Counselling programs. She posits that there should also be a continuous professional development for the present teacher counsellors to equip them with knowledge and skills on effective Guidance and Counselling. This book aimed at examining school community members' perceptions towards School Boards as management organs at school level and the extent to which such Boards have contributed to the prevailing trend of secondary education system. School Board is legally responsible for all school operations. Contrary to this, School Boards' contribution to secondary school improvement is minimal because Board members are not involved fully in every issue that occurs at schools. This is because of lack of professional background in education, poor representativeness, lack of commitment and managerial skills among Board members. This book has been designed to help those professionally engaged in secondary education management because of its practical orientation. This book provides direction and guidance to educational leaders, University and Teachers' Colleges' lecturers, tutors and students as well as serving as a valuable reference material for their courses and implementations. The book recommends that School Boards should be well informed about their school responsibilities to be effective in enhancing schools' performance socially and academically for school community members' benefits.

Master's Thesis from the year 2015 in the subject Pedagogy - Common Didactics, Educational Objectives, Methods, grade: A, Moi University (Main campus), course: Education curriculum, language: English, abstract: Cooperating teachers provide the guidance sought by teacher trainees when they are away from college in the practicing schools and in the absence of the college tutors. This study sought to establish the extent to which this mentorship role is played by analyzing the mentoring relationship between cooperating primary school teachers and teacher trainees during teaching practice. The objectives of the study were to find out how the cooperating primary school teachers mentored the teacher trainees on: schemes of work and lesson plans; selection and application of instructional methods; lesson presentation and on professional ethics. The theoretical frame work used was based on developmental supervision theory by Glickman (2003). The study adopted a descriptive survey research design. It targeted cooperating teachers from 26 public primary schools from Kakamega and Vihiga Counties in Western Kenya and the student teacher trainees of Eregi and Kaimosi Teachers College who had undertaken teaching practice in the targeted primary schools. Two cooperating teachers who had handled teacher trainees during teaching practice for at least one year were selected from the schools through simple random sampling. For teacher trainees, focus was on approximately 1000 second year st...

Under the present educational centralization Japanese secondary school teachers are severely handicapped in carrying out the goals of cultivating a spontaneous spirit and creating a culture rich in individuality. Although Japanese nursery, kindergarten, and elementary teachers could provide many hints to improve the methodology of their American counterparts, the reverse is true at the secondary and college levels. American teachers try to encourage students to be creative in approaching a problem, writing an essay, and sketching an object, and they will suggest appropriate courses, recommend books, and encourage intellectual challenge, while Japanese secondary school teachers' goal is narrowly focused on presenting designated textual material in as efficient a manner as possible. In the United States, farmers constitute less than ten percent of the population, but American schools still operate as if students had to return home each day for chores, or as if the summer vacation and fall schedule had to be used to help parents with planting, cultivating, and harvesting crops. Today, most American mothers work full time and children have much more free time and live in less secure urban environments. The amount of time spent attending school in Japan and the United States is just one of the cultural attitudes that is examined in this book.

Teaching Mathematics is nothing less than a mathematical manifesto. Arising in response to a limited National Curriculum, and engaged with secondary schooling for those aged 11 ̶ 14 (Key Stage 3) in particular, this handbook for teachers will help them broaden and enrich their students' mathematical education. It avoids specifying how to teach, and focuses instead on the central principles and concepts that need to be borne in mind by all teachers and textbook authors-but which are little appreciated in the UK at present. This study is aimed at anyone who would like to think more deeply about the discipline of 'elementary mathematics', in England and Wales and anywhere else. By analysing and supplementing the current curriculum, Teaching Mathematics provides food for thought for all those involved in school mathematics, whether as aspiring teachers or as experienced professionals. It challenges us all to reflect upon what it is that makes secondary school mathematics educationally, culturally, and socially important.

This book addresses one of the most persistent issues confronting governments, educations systems and schools today: the attraction, preparation, and retention of early career teachers. It draws on the stories of sixty graduate teachers from Australia to identify the key barriers, interferences and obstacles to teacher resilience and what might be done about it. Based on these stories, five interrelated themes - policies and practices, school culture, teacher identity, teachers' work, and relationships - provide a framework for dialogue around what kinds of conditions need to be created and sustained in order to promote early career teacher resilience. The book provides a set of resources - stories, discussion, comments, reflective questions and insights from the literature - to promote conversations among stakeholders rather than providing yet another 'how to do' list for improving the daily lives of early career teachers. Teaching is a complex, fragile and uncertain profession. It operates in an environment of unprecedented educational reforms designed to control, manage and manipulate pedagogical judgements. Teacher resilience must take account of both the context and circumstances of individual schools (especially those in economically disadvantaged communities) and the diversity of backgrounds and talents of early career teachers themselves. The book acknowledges that the substantial level of change required- cultural, structural, pedagogical and relational -...

Thus the findings indicated that most respondents have positive perceptions for teaching statistics topics. Other main finding was teachers statistical knowledge, the results indicated that minority of teachers haven't necessary statistical knowledge for teaching statistical topics. Because in my country Ethiopia mathematics teachers' were trained to teach mathematics rather than statistics and they were took sometimes one introductory statistic course. But in secondary schools mathematics book, there are some statistical topics to be taught. It was also found that teachers didn't use modeling when they teach those topics because of different challenges like; teacher's knowledge, time, motivation, facilities, and students' background knowledge.

Explore the complexity of teacher-student relationships in secondary school settings and learn how these largely unscripted relationships function for students and teachers in their learning and socioemotional development. For teachers, the relationships provide a foundation for pedagogical and curricular endeavors and lead to their increased investment in students’ growth, development, and academic success. Students who have such relationships feel more comfortable in their learning environments, interested in the material, and motivated to perform well. We discuss what these relationships look like from the perspectives of teacher and student. Topics include: Drawing appropriate boundaries School-provided guidelines and guidance Formats for supporting teachers A whole school approach to working on students’ emotional challenges Relationships in after-school programs. The voices of teachers and students in this volume show how much young people want to feel known and engage with teachers and how much teachers feel rewarded and invigorated by taking the step to connect with students on this level. This is the 137th volume of New Directions for Youth Development, the Jossey-Bass quarterly report series dedicated to bringing together everyone concerned with helping young people, including scholars, practitioners, and people from different disciplines and professions.

Teachers are considered to be the pillars for any educational system and the efficiency of the teachers is determined by a wide range of factors like teaching inputs, school facilities, work environment, work commitment, training, personal involvement, human relations, job promotions, job description, supervision, motivation (self and others), salary, increments, welfare measures, future possibilities, home conditions, students involvement, community support, transport facilities, etc. It is the level of positive attitude of teachers that often decides his/her success and efficiency as a teacher. If the teachers are free from all burdens then they will be able to devote their time and attention for the benefit of the school. A dissatisfied teacher with negative attitudes towards profession is not only a burden to himself but also to the school and community at large. If teachers have not got satisfaction it means that there is something wrong in terms of the academic inputs, welfare measures or at personal level.

"Warrior Women" makes visible the ongoing intergenerational narrative reverberations (Young, 2003; 2005) shaped through Canada's residential school era which denied the communal and cultural, economic, educational, human, familial, linguistic, and spiritual rights of Aboriginal people. Attending to these narrative reverberations foregrounded the continuing colonial barriers faced by six Aboriginal post secondary students as they composed their lives in a current era of increasing standardization in Canadian universities and schools. Yet, what also became visible were ways in which the Aboriginal teachers increasingly reclaimed or drew upon their ancestral ways of knowing and being.

This book explores underachievement of boys and girls in secondary education. The author focuses her empirical study on the alarming underachievement of African Caribbean boys in British schools in comparison to other groups. She also adopts a historical perspective to compare West Indian children who arrived in Britain in the 1960s and 1970s (many labeled as ESN) (Coard 1971) to problems faced by black boys in today’s classrooms. Janet Graham also explores the impact of globalization, population movement, government policies, and diversity on black boys’ education provision in inner-city schools in Britain. She investigates masculinity, subcultures, peer-group pressures, and exclusion from school and their impact on black boys’ education. The institutional focus study sets the context for the empirical study and provides a perspective from voices of black boys in one inner-London school to find out what they think about school, learning, subcultures, peer-group pressures, and teachers. As a contrast, teachers’ views of the boys are also provided. This book will be of interest to educationalists, teachers, parents, school management, and government bodies interested in race, diversity, achievement, who want to bring about change to improve life chances.

Despite the efforts of teachers and educators, every year secondary schools across the English-speaking world turn out millions of functionally-illiterate leavers. The costs in human misery and in wasted productivity are catastrophic. What can schools do to prevent this situation? In their highly-accessible new book, James and Dianne Murphy combine more than 50 years of experience to provide teachers with a thorough, easy-to-use walk-through of the extensive research on reading and its effects on student achievement. Drawing on the work of experts from around the world, the authors explore how we learn to read, how the many myths and misconceptions around reading developed, and why they continue to persist.Building on these foundations, chapters go on to examine how the general secondary school classroom can support all levels of reading more effectively, regardless of subject; how school leaders can ensure that their systems, practices and school culture deliver the very best literacy provision for all students; and what it takes to ensure that a racing intervention aimed at adolescent struggling readers is truly effective. The overall message is one of great optimism: the authors demonstrate that the right of every child to learn to read is entirely achievable if schools employ the best research-driven practice.Foreword by David Didau.
