Some of these emissions can be reduced by catalytic reactions, but, e.g., diesel particulates can not be reduced by this procedure. Diesel particulates are small carbon particles which are able to penetrate into the human blood cylcle via the lungs, which furthermore leads to serious health problems.The installation of so called diesel particulate filters into the exhaust systems of captive engines is the state of the art technology for solving the particulate problem. This bachelor paper describes several designs of filters which can be installed into the exhaust systems of diesel engines in construction machines. Futhermore the economic influence caused by the use of such filtering systems will be explained as well. Due to certain specialists, one possible alternative to reduce car emissions would be to switch from gasoline or diesel to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) vehicles. They are environmentally friendly and the technology is even ready. In Austria, CNG cars were introduced in 1992. Nevertheless, the demand of CNG cars is decreasing, its market share is not as high as predicted and lower than in some other countries, like for example Italy. All these indications must have its reasons and leads to the research question: Why is CNG not sucessful in Austria? One hypothesis, which will be analyzed within this research, is that CNG cars are not profitable compared to its main competitors gasoline and diesel. In order to measure the profitablily of CNG cars, the Internal Rate of Return (IRR) of the investment will be calculated and compared to the project's cost of capital.However, calculations show that under certain circumstances CNG is profitable and under different criteria it is not. Furthermore the deepwater ports are compared on the basis of competitive factors such as hinterland connectivity. The thesis also addresses CO2 reduction measures for the maritime door-to-door container transport. Maritime container transport accounts for approximately 90 percent of global trade volumes. Largest container vessels represent challenges for container ports, such as the required draft of 15.5 meters. In order to be competitive, many ports try to integrate in global supply chains. Furthermore, environmental issues play a growing role in the maritime business. Thus, the dissertation concentrates on CO2 emissions from maritime supply chains. Carbon emissions are calculated by applying activity-based approach for road emissions and energy-based method for ship emissions. Both the United States government and the International Maritime Organization have enacted strict regulations to promote the industry's adoption of alternative sources of fuel in an effort to reduce the amount of sulfur oxides and other pollutants released from container ships. This research sought to connect whether or not the United States and International Maritime Organization sulfur fuel enforcements have allowed container ship companies to catalyze an industry-wide shift in shipping practices. To answer my questions, I analyzed relevant container ship policies by the United States government within the last ten years as well as regulations in place by the International Maritime Organization specifically addressing sulfur level reduction. I then analyzed the archives of container ship companies in search of sustainability initiatives or alternative fuel adoption underway. In gathering results, I found evidence suggesting the United States federal government has enacted sufficient standards in attempting to limit sulfur emissions from container ship engines within its coastlines. Approximately 60% of those emissions are attributable to the decarbonation of limestone. A widespread approach for the reduction of the CO2-emissions is toreplace the clinker in the cement by pozzolanic waste materials, e.g. fly ash. The reaction of fly ash is generally slow. Due to this slow reaction cement pastes mixed of Portland cement and fly ash have a slower strength development than pure Portland cement, at least at early ages up to 7 days. The goal of this study was to increase early strength properties of Portland cement/fly ash blends by increasing the early ettringite formation in order to decrease the porosity. Therefore various amounts of anhydrite and laboratory synthesised C3A were added to Portland cement/fly ash systems that contained 30% fly ash. The behavior of these systems in terms of kinetics, phase development and microstructure was studied by means of strength tests, isothermal calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, chemical shrinkage, X-ray diffraction, backscattered electron image analysis, mercury intrusion porosimetry and thermodynamic modeling. The higher particulate matter pollution in the industrial area may be attributed to re-suspension of road dust, soil dust, automobile traffic and nearby industrial emissions. Ravada has reported lower values because it is at large distance from the industrial emissions and covered with rich vegetation.

The empirical investigation establishes the critical roles played by energy consumption and CO2 emissions on economic growth but in substantially opposite directions. While that of the former positively enhances economic growth, on the one hand, the latter negatively deters it. In addition, a long-run relationship is equally established but with the varied direction of causality. Finally, the study offers significant policy implications directed at using energy resource efficiently as well as curtailing environmental contaminants.

Thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) are ceramic coating systems developed to reduce the heat transfer from a hot medium to the coated parts. This technology can be used in automotive exhaust systems to reduce the heat transfer from the exhaust gases to the metal pipes. As a result, catalytic converters can reach the ideal temperature for the conversion of gases more quickly, reducing emissions. In order to be effective, coatings must be applied to the inside of pipes. However, conventional techniques for the preparation of ceramic coatings are not suitable for the deposition of coatings inside of long pipes with small diameter, or are too expensive. In this work, a TBC system was developed using the polymer-derived ceramics (PDC) technique. In this method, ceramic coatings are obtained by the thermal conversion of preceramic polymers into ceramics, after deposition of the coatings by simple lacquer techniques. Fillers are used to tailor the microstructure and the properties of the coatings. This book contains a review of the literature on PDC coatings, the procedures for the preparation of the TBCs, as well as their properties.

A comprehensive introduction to the design, synthesis, characterization, and catalytic properties of nanoporous catalysts for the biomass conversion With the specter of peak oil demand looming on the horizon, and mounting concerns over the environmental impact of greenhouse gas emissions, biomass has taken on a prominent role as a sustainable alternative fuel source.
