Gilvan Barroso Thermal barrier coating by polymer-derived ceramic technique for application in exhaust systems (Band 12)

Thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) are ceramic coating systems developed to reduce the heat transfer from a hot medium to the coated parts. This technology can be used in automotive exhaust systems to reduce the heat transfer from the exhaust gases to the metal pipes. As a result, catalytic converters can reach the ideal temperature for the conversion of gases more quickly, reducing emissions. In order to be effective, coatings must be applied to the inside of pipes. However, conventional techniques for the preparation of ceramic coatings are not suitable for the deposition of coatings inside of long pipes with small diameter, or are too expensive. In this work, a TBC system was developed using the polymer-derived ceramics (PDC) technique. In this method, ceramic coatings are obtained by the thermal conversion of preceramic polymers into ceramics, after deposition of the coatings by simple lacquer techniques. Fillers are used to tailor the microstructure and the properties of the coatings. This book contains a review of the literature on PDC coatings, the procedures for the preparation of the TBCs, as well as their properties.

From Paul Verhoeven’s The Cold Heart in 1950 to Konrad Petzold’s The Story of the Goose Princess and Her Loyal Horse Falada in 1989, East Germany’s state-sponsored film company, DEFA (Deutsche Film-Aktiengesellschaft), produced over forty feature-length, live-action fairy-tale films based on nineteenth-century folk and literary tales. While many of these films were popular successes and paved the way for the studio’s other films to enter the global market, DEFA’s fairy-tale corpus has not been studied in its entirety. In The Politics of Magic: DEFA Fairy-Tale Films, Qinna Shen fills this gap by analyzing the films on thematic and formal levels and examining their embedded agendas in relation to the cultural politics of the German Democratic Republic. In five chapters, Shen compares the films with earlier print versions of the same stories and analyzes revisions made in DEFA’s film adaptations. She also distinguishes the DEFA fairy-tale films from National Socialist, West German, and Disney adaptations of the same tales. Her archival work reconstitutes the cultural-historical context in which films were produced and received, and incorporates the films into the larger narrative of DEFA. This project is aimed to deposit magnetic thin films by Pulsed Laser Deposition (PLD) technique. A KrF Excimer laser (248 nm, 20 ns) operated at 20 Hz was used as an energy source for the deposition. Films are deposited under various deposition conditions, like substrate temperature, oxygen pressure, post annealing and applied external magnetic field depending upon the target material characteristics. On the basis of the structure the deposited films are classified as cubic spinel ferrites (NiFe2O4 and ZnMnZrFeO), Hexaferrite (BaFe12O19) and Alloy (NdFeCo).

Different from their previous examples, those films including educated, individual and sexually emancipated women discredited the patriarchal norms about sexuality which is based on the satisfaction of the male by giving the women the chance of being satisfied. Through looking at how Turkish woman director's films represent the educated urban women and their male partners this study also sheds lights on the male hysteria related to sexual emancipation of women in Turkish films.

There have been extraordinary developments in nanomaterials in the past two decades. Nanomaterial processing is one of the key components for this success. This volume, titled Processing of Nanoparticle Materials and Nanostructured Films, is a collection of the papers presented at Controlled Processing of Nanoparticle-based Materials and Nanostructured Films symposium held during the Materials Science and Technology 2009 conference (MS&T’09), October 25-29, 2009 in Pittsburgh, PA. It summarizes the progress that has been achieved most recently in understanding and processing nanoparticle-based materials and nanostructured films. Nanoparticle-based materials and nanostructured films hold great promise to enable a broad range of new applications. This includes high energy conversion efficiency fuel cells, smart materials, high performance sensors, and structural materials under extreme environments. However, many barriers still exist in understanding and controlling the processing of nanoparticle-based materials and nanostructured films. In particular, agglomeration must be controlled in powder synthesis and processing to enable the fabrication of homogeneous green or composite microstructures, and microstructure evolution must be controlled to preserve the size and properties of the nanostructures in the finished materials. Also, novel nanostructure designs are highly needed at all stages of bulk and thin film nanomaterial formation process to enable unique performances, low cost, and green engineering. Inhaltsangabe:Abstract: The way in which media systems reflect our social environment and specifically how they represent and disseminate gender role models and have a lasting effect on the construction of identity is of long-standing interest both in Gender Studies and in the literary and the visual arts. In order to examine in particular the representation of women in the visual art of popular cinema, The Dominance of the Male Gaze in Hollywood Films will thus focus on the image of women in mainstream Hollywood films. Although media and specifically television and films are often considered to act „largely as a social mirror”, films in fact often distort social reality and continue to reflect traditional stereotypical gender constructions. In fact, these traditional gender images are not simply mirrors of real life, but also ideological signifiers: In many mainstream films that pretend to depict reality a time lag separates true social circumstances from the film reality the movie produces. Consequently, this time lag also manifest in filmic representations of gender roles means for the women’s movement that feminists have hardly been able to enact new images of women outside the patriarchal context of popular films or change female stereotypes and incorporate feminist thought into mainstream films.
