The book deals with the numerical simulation of compact heat exchangers that are primarily used in dissipating heat generated by electronic components and assemblies. The forced-convective cooling of a horizontally based pin-fin assembly has been investigated for the pressure drop and heat transfer characteristics. The effect of pin fin’s thermal conductivity on the performance of heat exchanger is investigated by considering different fin materials. Subsequently the computations for different fin spacing along the stream-wise direction were carried out. The thermal and fluid-dynamic characteristics along the computational domain are discussed in detail. Finally the performance characteristics of triangular fin heat exchangers are studied and a comparison was made with circular pin fins. The results showed that circular pin fins perform better than triangular pin fins with less pressure drop. The book should be especially useful for the engineers and researchers working in the field of conjugate heat transfer and compact heat exchangers.

Thermoacoustic systems with no stacks or intermittent stacks represent a promising alternative to conventional stack-based systems. There is theoretical and experimental evidence that such systems can perform more efficiently and produce more acoustic power than thermoacoustic systems with an array of flat plates or regular pores. As opposed to conventional thermoacoustic systems, no-stack setups do not include porous material as a medium for storing and transferring heat. In such systems, heat is transported by gas parcels directly between heat exchangers. A simplified Lagrangian model has been developed in this work to approximately analyze no-stack standing-wave thermoacoustic configurations. More accurate simulations of favorable configurations are investigated with the help of computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Using CFD code FLUENT, more efficient setups were found with the second law efficiency up to 55%. The dependence of system performance is reported for a range of system parameters. A good agreement between the simplified model and CFD results was achieved in most cases.

Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) simulations of the steady state Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes equations using the second order k-ω turbulence model were performed to investigate the Drag Coefficients of the Class 8 trucks under different geometric configurations. The reduction rates of aerodynamic drag using several add-on devices such as base flap, boat tail, underbody skirt and tractor-trailer gap are investigated through the CFD simulations. Moreover, simulations by using different lengths and angles of the base flap and boat tail were conducted; the comparison indicates that the base flap design is more effective for the drag reduction. The optimized range of the length and angle of the base flap design is confirmed by a set of systematic CFD simulations. Also, a set of wind tunnel experiments had been conducted to confirm the outcomes from the CFD simulations.

A physics-based model utilizing small-signal parameters obtained from measurements is derived for modeling the current dependent collector charge. A brief chapter about substrate effects in bipolar transistors comprises the derivation of a compact model for the bias-dependent substrate resistance as well as a proper partitioning of the substrate capacitance.New extraction methods for compact model parameters are introduced and the application of existing methods to advanced processes is discussed. The book summarizes the comprehensive research on Heat Transfer Enhancement using a new technique using TMT rods as inserts. Enhancement is a practice of modifying the surface to increase the heat transfer coefficient between the surface and the fluid. Experiments were carried out under two conditions of Rod inserts with and without baffles in the tube side flow of a double pipe heat Exchanger and the results are compared with a smooth tube DPHE. Rod inserts act as a turbulence promoter. It mixes the boundary fluid and the bulk fluid and thus reduces the boundary layer thickness. The effect of inserts on the heat transfer coefficient and the pressure drop were investigated at different flow rates. This technique can enhance the heat transfer coefficient by about 2.5 times with a very low fabrication cost.

Heat exchangers are widely used in the industrial sector, e.g. in the refrigeration, air conditioning, petrochemical, and agricultural food industry. The high cost of energy and material has resulted in an increased effort aimed at producing high performance heat exchanger equipment. Passive methods of heat transfer enhancement do not need external power for enhancement. One of these kinds of passive technique is twisted tape inserts that enhance the performance of heat exchangers. Using multiple twisted tape inserts gives better enhancement than a single twisted tape insert. Using nanofluid gives also better thermal performance than water. Therefore, nanofluid along with twisted tape inserts was used in this study.For this study, different combinations of multiple twisted tape inserts were designed and fabricated. Nanofluid is used with various volume concentrations of 0.07%, 0.14% and 0.21% in order to investigate the effect of nanoparticle concentration on heat transfer enhancement. Experimental investigation was carried out by having a constant heat flux condition and by varying the volume flow rate of flow from 2 to 10 lpm.

The thermoacoustic engine is a device that converts heat energy into sound or acoustic power. They are used currently to recover waste heat from military vehicles and converting it to electricity, which means that such devices can play a significant role in power generation for domestic & commercial purposes. This study demonstrates an attempt to design a 1-meter-long thermoacoustic heat engine with optimum efficiency. This will be done using DeltaEC, a software which was developed especially for the modeling of low amplitude thermoacoustic devices. The optimization process includes geometrical parameters of the resonator tube and the stack, the working fluid, and the heat input to the engine. The present optimization process has shown that slab stacks made of Celcor (a Ceramic material) demonstrated much better performance than other stack shapes and materials. For a 1.1239-meter-long and 0.011 m2 square-shaped resonator tube, a 7.75 cm long slab stack made of Celcor having 0.304 mm-thick-plates, spaced by 0.648 mm, giving a porosity ratio of 0.68067, will theoretically convert heat to acoustic power at an efficiency of 30.611% which is equivalent to 47.97% of Carnot’s efficiency.

This book provides detailed information on numerical modelling of nucleation and condensation based on classical nucleation theory and computational fluid dynamic simulation of the heat transfer coefficient for the nozzle wall. The influences of nozzle geometry, pressure and temperature on the average droplet size are reported. In the second part, the results of the CFD simulation for convective heat transfer of turbulent flow in a cooled convergent-divergent nozzle have been reported. The importance of the heat transfer coefficient was to find the most suitable metals for the nozzle wall as well as its application for producing nano-particles. ANSYS-ICEM and ANSYS-CFX 13.0 packages were used to mesh and simulate fluid flow in the nozzle, respectively. The effects of different turbulence models, mesh grid resolution, and a wide range of stagnation pressures and temperatures on the heat transfer coefficient have been investigated. Three turbulence models of k-ω, k-ε and SST (shear stress transport) were applied to calculate the heat transfer coefficient.

This work presents a comprehensive investigation of a barrier-vehicle interaction in a crosswind scenario. The main effort was to study the feasibility of the numerical simulation without the momentum sink approach for the wind barrier modeling. The goal was to treat the complex unresolved flow near and through the wind barrier openings at a detailed level. In this work, a geometrically accurate three-dimensional wind barrier model was used in the numerical study. Different levels of grid refinements were performed for grid independence investigation. Experimental research was conducted to validate the numerical results. An advanced aerodynamic CFD simulation, DDES, was utilized in analyzing the transient crosswind scenario. In addition, a parametric optimization method, which combines state-of-the-art scientific research and industrial requirements, was presented. In conclusion, guidelines were defined for a complete wind barrier research in the road vehicle crosswind protection.

Political Science has traditionally employed empirical research and analytical resources to understand, explain and predict political phenomena. One of the long-standing criticisms against empirical modeling targets the static perspective provided by the model-invariant paradigm. In political science research, this issue has a particular relevance since political phenomena prove sophisticated degrees of context-dependency whose complexity could be hardly captured by traditional approaches. To cope with the complexity challenge, a new modeling paradigm was needed. This book is concerned with this challenge. Moreover, the book aims to reveal the power of computational modeling of political attitudes to reinforce the political methodology in facing two fundamental challenges: political culture modeling and polity modeling. The heat pump is a machine that draws heat from one place to another investment of external work. Usually it is from the colder to warmer place. Heating heat pump is a device that uses non-traditional sources of energy for central heating and hot water. The basic view of heat pumps is that the planet's global temperature regime is directly added heat from the combustion of any fuel. Indirectly, there is a certain amount of heat in power plants - the production of electricity consumed for heat pump operation. In the first part of my project I explain the heat pump principles. Then are described the heat sources for heat pumps, divide the heat pumps depending on driving mechanisms, heat sources and using energy. This part also described the heat pumps like water to water type, earth to water type, air to water type, the basic parts of the heat pump like compressor and convertible of heat. Second part describes using the heat pumps like onditioning, heat pump like alternative source in household and different systems. The third part contains calculations of heat decreases and heat pump design. Finally are compared different types of heating with heat pump.

Master's Thesis from the year 2013 in the subject Engineering - Computer Engineering, grade: none, University of Wuppertal, course: Computational Mechanics of Engineering - Computational Fluid Dynamics, language: English, abstract: The objective of this thesis is to develop a generic CFD solver to simulate multicomponent gas transport involving multiscales. A comparative study between the mixture and Eulerian approach for multicomponent flows is done. Eulerian approach where every component has its own characteristic velocity is used in this work with reasons stated. Inter-component momentum exchange term has been modelled using Maxwell-Stefan relations. A semi-heuristic drag term for modelling porous drag is used. Temperature transport for the mixture is developed by considering an ensemble averaging method of all components for the mixture. Volume averaged form for all the equations is applied by considering fluid in presence of porous media as a pseudo-homogeneous medium. All the equations and terms mentioned are implemented in the solver. An open source CFD software OpenFOAM has been used to develop the solver. Capability of the solver to simulate diffusion dominated mass transfer has been established by using a Loschmidt tube which involves diffusion of a ternary mixture. Accuracy of 0.5% is observed for the case in comparison with analytical solution for the problem in one dimension.
