Adel Al Qeisi Translating English Animal Idioms Into Arabic

It was really my great pleasure to work close to students at the UAE University in Al Ain- UAE . I discovered many issues related to the problems of translating English animal idioms In 2008, third year students at the Translation Department constituted the subjects of the study. The sample used in this thesis included 75 female students of translation at the UAE University in Al Ain in the UAE. The following results were obtained from this study: 1-English animal idioms are difficult to be translated into Arabic because of the big gap between the two cultures, which are reflected in their languages. 2- English animal idioms are usually used in their figurative meaning; this is why translating them accurately, meaningfully and normally into Arabic is considered to be problematic. Following on from the results, it is suggested that exposure to target language culture is necessary in order to deal with what we refer to as cultural background. Errors occur when students fail to provide the appropriate equivalent to the English Animal idioms due to their lack of cultural background of the target language.

Burton Raffel The Art of Translating Prose

There has been very little linguistically sound discussion of the differences between poetry and prose, and virtually no discussion of any sort of the practical consequences of those differences for the translation of prose. The Art of Translating Prose presents for both the specialist and nonspecialist the core strategies employed by the author in translating a variety of important prose texts, and in the process delineates a coherent program or theory that can inform each act of translation. Burton Raffel considers and effectively illustrates the fundamental features of prose, those features that most clearly and idiomatically define an author's style. He addresses those features that must be attended closely and imaginatively as one moves them from the original-language work. Raffel's insistence on concentrating on the artistic viability of the translation continues themes he explored in other books, most notably The Forked Tongue and The Art of Translating Poetry. Raffel finds the most important determinant--for prose, though not for poetry--to be syntax, which he argues must be tracked if the translation is to reflect the original author's style in a meaningful way. Raffel ties together theory and practice to establish sound standards for the evaluation of prose translations, and he provides examples in considerations of versions of such books as Madame Bovary, Germinal, and Death in Venice.Burton Raffel is Distinguished Professor of English at the University...

Alf H. Walle Recovery the Native Way. A Therapist .s Manual (PB)

In recent years, there has been a growing awareness that Native clients who suffer from substanceabuse often face challenges that are distinct from those experienced by the mainstream population. For a number of years, I have been involved in research involving Native alcoholism and I haverecently published a book on the subject titled The Path of Handsome Lake: A Model of Recoveryfor Native People. My book argues that many different Native cultures (in America and elsewhere)face similar challenges and disruptions because their cultures are often under great stress and/orbecause people are alienated from their heritage. The dyfunctional responses of many differentNative people are similar because they are subjected to similar pressures. In a nutshell, due to contactwith the outside world, Native cultures often experience disruptive transitions, and (in someinstances) entire cultures or ways of life may face extinction. Under such circumstances, the cultureloses the ability to support people and help them cope with the pressures of life. Culturaldecline itself often causes additional trauma. Combined, these pressures can trigger dysfunctionwithin the Native community. The obvious antidote for such maladies is to help Native substance abusers to reconnect with their heritagein positive and constructive ways. My earlier book and this one are inspired by the life and work of nineteenth century Iroquoisleader Handsome Lake who developed a method to help Native people embrace their ...

Starter cultures have great significance in the food industry due to their vital role in the manufacture, flavour, and texture development of fermented foods. Once mainly used in the dairy industry, nowadays starter cultures are applied across a variety of food products, including meat, sourdough, vegetables, wine and fish. New data on the potential health benefits of these organisms has led to additional interest in starter bacteria. Starter Cultures in Food Production details the most recent insights into starter cultures. Opening with a brief description of the current selection protocols and industrial production of starter cultures, the book then focuses on the innovative research aspects of starter cultures in food production. Case studies for the selection of new starter cultures for different food products (sourdough and cereal based foods, table olives and vegetables, dairy and meat products, fish and wine) are presented before chapters devoted to the role of lactic acid bacteria in alkaline fermentations and ethnic fermented foods. This book will provide food producers, researchers and students with a tentative answer to the emerging issues of how to use starter cultures and how microorganisms could play a significant role in the complex process of food innovation.

Gerhard Kubik Angola in the Black Cultural Expressions of Brazil

The transplantation of African musical cultures to the Americas was a multi-track and multi-time process. In the past many historical studies of African diaspora music, dance and other aspects of expressive culture concentrated on events in the Americas. What happened before the American trauma and simultaneously in Africa was often looked at unhistorically. In this book, world-renowned ethnomusicologist Gerhard Kubik considers African music and dance forms as the products of people living in various African cultures which have changed continuously in history, absorbing and processing elements from inside and outside the continent, creating new styles and fashions all the time. African diaspora music then appears as a consequent and creative extension overseas of African musical cultures that have existed in the period between the sixteenth and the twentieth century. From this perspective African diaspora music cannot be described adequately in terms of "retentions" and "survivals," as if African cultures in the Americas were doomed from the outset and perhaps only by some act of mercy permitted to "retain" certain elements. Using field research and documentary sources, Kubik tracks down some aspects of the Angolan dimension in the panorama of African music and dance cultures in Brazil, and also addresses methodology applicable in the wider context of African diaspora cultural studies.

GMOs, Consumerism and the Global Politics of Biotechnology. Rethinking Food, Bodies and Identities in Africa.s 21st Century

Despite sustained continental and national struggles for autonomy, sovereignty and independence in postcolonial Africa, the continent is increasingly embattled by the forces of globalisation which threaten African identity that is at the core of African struggles for continental and national unity. Situating the debates in the contemporary discourses on decoloniality, global consumerism, global food apartheid and the challenges and prospects of the emergent sharing economies, this book critically examines the importation, use and implications of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and other such non-food products on African bodies, institutions and cultures. The book poses questions about how Africa can be decolonised both politically and in terms of global food apartheid and the dehumanising importation and use of “foreign” non-food products, some of which militate against the ethos of [African] identity, Renaissance and indigeneity.

John Eves East Coast Blues - A 1960s Odyssey

A fictional social history, which gets under the skin of 1960s England: its music and youth cultures and the more general social attitudes and behaviours of that decade. John Eves challenges the depiction of Mods vs Rockers in the 60s, comparing experiences of living in North London at that time, to those of young people growing up in the provinces. This is interspersed with stories of working life in a small provincial office environment, with shocking accounts of the sexism and sexual harassment 'tolerated' by the female staff. East Coast Blues - A 1960s Odyssey is the story of a young man coming of age in the 1960s; about how the Mod culture of the 1960s went sour through the mindless violence of a few. The novel reveals the jealousies, power struggles and disputes - mainly over girls - and challenges the bias of the press at the time, that all Mods were violent thugs. This is not an alternative history but the 1960s as one man remembers living it."Can be loosely compared to Absolute Beginners by Colin Macinnes with regard to its social commentary"

Fay Chou Memoir of Half a Banana

Born in Taiwan but gone to a junior high school in America, then back to Taiwan for college, and immigrated to America again, the author paints vivid pictures of postwar Taiwan and America in the sixties, and compares the Chinese and American cultures through education systems, the business world, and life in general. The author touches on growing pains; disillusionment; the wear and tear of marriage, parenting, and relationships; challenges and betrayal in the business world; finding herself at fifty-five; and her extraordinary and otherworldly encounters. She reveals complicated Chinese cultural traditions and recounts the Second Sino-Japanese War through her father's recollections. From working at a Buddhist organization and from taking care of her father, she comes to understand birth, aging, sickness, and death. The author considers herself "half a banana"-yellow on the outside but a bit white on the inside. Having lived in the States for forty-three years, she understands both Chinese and American cultures well and shows how the two cultures, especially the fundamental difference between them, have molded her life. Dotted with well-known Chinese sayings and anecdotes, Memoir of Half a Banana offers an interesting and truthful glimpse into the Chinese people and ideology.

Somatic embryogenesis is one of the most important technologies for plant regeneration of elite date palm cultivars, which presents a great potential for the rapid propagation and genetic resource preservation of this species. Considerable progress during recent years has been made in the development and optimization of this regeneration pathway through the establishment of embryogenic suspension cultures. The fast behavior of date palm cell suspension growth and differentiation would foster effective utilization for mass micropropagation and various in vitro investigations. This thesis is aimed at describing efficient regeneration protocol via somatic embryogenesis from suspension cultures, innovative information on recent progress for suspension cultures in the date palm and application of arbuscular mycorrhizes in growth and protection of seedling plants.

In these other cultures, such person-oriented features are often played out loudly and visibly. And in the process of living according to the precepts of these features, the neighbors preach their benefits and the children sing the attributes, often in folkloric renditions of appreciation for the exceptional quality of their cultural tenets.

All these rather impeding and logically challenging findings are visibly summarized in the "Five Dimensions of IP" figure, concluding that there are five dimensions which will affect every project in a different manner and in different decrees of intensity. Art of Modern Oriental Management. Applying the Chinese, Japanese and Korean Management Styles at Work

This book aims to present an overview of Chinese, Japanese and Korean modern management styles. The cultures of China, Japan and Korea are influenced by Confucianism, Daoism and Buddhism. As such, there are some basic similarities in their management styles. As business operations become more internationalised, the management styles among Chinese, Japanese and Korean companies have blurred the lines of distinction between Western and Eastern cultures. The need for Western managers to adapt to Asian way of doing business, and likewise for Asian companies to understand Western business practices, means that managers have to bridge the gaps and adopt the best management practices containing both Western and Eastern elements.Unlike the traditional approach of setting clear differentiation between Western and Eastern cultures, this book looks at Oriental management from a modern perspective, that is, the fusion of Western and Eastern management styles. By using a multifaceted approach to understanding modern Oriental management, the author stresses the complexities of the business environment in China, Japan and Korea. He suggests that Western theories of management are applicable to Eastern cultural context with some adaptations to the local environment. The author also offers valuable insights into the management styles of Oriental managers by providing a critical perspective of their thought processes in simple yet highly relevant illustrations of models and frameworks. Nathan R Large, Laine M Lundquist Empyrean Stories. Short Tales of Empyrean Dreams

Our Empyrean Dreams are stories from a future civilization, where Humankind is only one of several star-faring cultures struggling to coexist in a shared galaxy. The most powerful of these cultures are joined together in a treaty organization known as the Collective. Commerce and self-interest are the binding principles of the Collective: member states hold standing to the degree their culture proves its economic power and value to the whole. The ruling cultures of the Collective distinguish themselves by their unique innovations and capabilities; the Humans of Terra were fortunate to possess talents sufficient to earn membership. Outside of the Collective’s elite, many more sentient species exist, either tolerating this authority as members or rejecting the Collective entirely. An uneasy peace holds both within and without this interstellar civilization. Most intelligent beings are more interested in pursuing their personal lives and goals and less concerned about galactic politics. They study, work, build, fight, and love as best they can within their own cultures and worlds. A few sentients find themselves drawn across borders: across cultures, across star systems, or even across realities. Scholars catch glimpses of how old, complex, and strange the Universe really is. Diplomats encounter the frayed threads of alliance and must decide whether to bind or cut them. Explorers traverse the tangled webs of civilization and navigation. Criminals seek advantage in the cracks of ...

Language Pedagogy and Language Use in Africa (PB)

The study of African language pedagogy and use in the Diaspora was initiated in the 1960s as African countries attained independence from colonial powers. In the continent, the enthusiasm for the use of indigenous languages and scholarship has remained relatively moderate as scholars are conflicted in their loyalty to imperial languages. The attitude towards the use of African languages by African leaders has also hampered scholars' efforts to create and sustain the needed visibility for African languages around the world. Needless to say, the study of African languages is not only critical to the study of language theories but also important in changing Africa's overwhelming reliance on European languages to communicate with each other. The reliance has not only affected the politics of the continent but also its economic wellbeing. An analysis of the enormous developmental challenges facing the African continent will reveal that many of the economic, social, political and cultural challenges have major language components. It can actually be said that the challenges of development in Africa are either outright language challenges or are language- based. More significantly, at the social level in many parts of the continent, African languages are now perceived as inadequate means of communication. Language Pedagogy and Language Use in Africa discusses the importance of teaching and using of African languages in the African continent and beyond and provides illustrati...

Manfred Wolf Muslims in Europe. Notes, Comments, Questions

This book probes questions and gives provocative answers for one of the crucial issues of our time. Are two cultures ever incompatible in one society? In a series of essays spanning more than a decade, Manfred Wolf examines the topic of Muslims in Europe, exploring various aspects of the subject, including cultural affinities or their absence; several approaches to handling immigration; the roots of radicalization and terrorism; and the assimilation of Muslims in Europe versus the United States. From “Elusive Affinities”:“Assimilation is always hardest when the culture of origin differs radically from the culture of the new society. Arab cultures of the Middle East and North Africa revolve around a kind of Islam-induced authoritarianism, an absolutist impulse, which the new country sets itself against. Certain standards—deference to parents, obedience to government, respect for force—are in those parts of the world accepted almost without question, while European cultures encourage their citizens to question them.“The newcomer, especially if he’s young, mistakes this seeming laxness for total permissiveness, an absence of all standards, and is almost surprised when the host culture clamps down and jails him for a criminal offense. European culture seems amorphous, without clear values and beliefs. Freedom looks like the absence of morality. Since so few absolute standards obtain, why shouldn’t you grope and fondle women at a public celebration—especially when they’re so provoca...

What does it mean that we can be reached on our mobile phones wherever we are and at all times? What are the cultural consequences if we are informed about ‘everything and anything important’ via television? How are our political, religious and ethnic belongings impacted through being increasingly connected by digital media? And what is the significance of all this for our everyday lives? Drawing on Hepp’s fifteen-year research expertise on media change, this book deals with questions like these in a refreshingly straightforward and readable way. ‘Cultures of mediatization’ are described as cultures whose main resources are mediated by technical media. Therefore, everyday life in cultures of mediatization is ‘moulded’ by the media. To understand this challenging media change it is inappropriate to focus on any one single medium like television, the press, mobile phones, the Internet or other forms of digital media. One has to capture the ‘mediatization’ of culture in its entirety. Cultures of Mediatization outlines how this can be done critically. In so doing, it offers a new way of thinking about our present-day media-saturated world.

Seminar paper from the year 2016 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: 2,0, University of Münster (Wirtschaftsinformatik), course: Seminar: Dark Side of Technology, language: English, abstract: This thesis aims at identifying dimensions in the individual's perception of time that are influenced by some dimensions of national cultures. Further, implications of cultural differences in these time perception dimensions for GVTs and the temporal coordination in GVTs should be identified. Additionally, the influence of ICT on the internal team processes and the team members' surrounding environment is assessed. Therefore, the current state of the literature with regards to GVTs, its relevance and problems as well as with regards to temporal coordination is reviewed. Moreover, time perception dimensions are discovered in the actual research, combined with existing cultural dimensions and applied on GVTs.The continuous progress in the development of modern information and communication technology (ICT) and the need for flexible responses to globalized markets trigger companies to frequently build global virtual teams (GVT). Most of the teams that are assembled in companies work at least to some extend virtually. The team members of a GVT are geographically and timely dispersed and collaborate through the use of ICT. Compared to face-to-face teams, these GVTs face several additional challenges, some of which are caused by the cul...

Abstract: This thesis handles a topic which is of high importance for all companies doing business internationally . But nevertheless there are still less companies who make this a subject of everydaylife. What I am talking about is culture, cultural differences and cross cultural management. What makes it so difficult for people of different cultures to communicate, to work together, to live side by side in harmony without misunderstanding ? It is our culture and the difference between our cultures often mentioned not at all. But at the latest if there appear problems you will recognize the differences in understanding, thinking, behavior, ... This thesis should make a small contribution to get a better understanding that culture is something we must accept and that we can not neglect if we are doing business internationally. There is a short overview with demographical and economical data of the last thirty years of both countries. It continues with the main topic - the cultural dimension (theoretical background followed by some models of identifying different cultures, the cultural profiles of both countries, the Singaporean culture and its characteristics, behavior and problems as expatriate in Singapore, do's and don'ts. After this I explain the theory on a concrete example : a Business Reengeneering project realized in both countreis (Singapore and Austria) on which I have collaborated for altogether eleven months. Big Data is a new field, with many technological challenges to be understood in order to use it to its full potential. These challenges arise at all stages of working with Big Data, beginning with data generation and acquisition. The storage and management phase presents two critical challenges: infrastructure, for storage and transportation, and conceptual models. Finally, to extract meaning from Big Data requires complex analysis. Here the authors propose using metaheuristics as a solution to these challenges; they are first able to deal with large size problems and secondly flexible and therefore easily adaptable to different types of data and different contexts. The use of metaheuristics to overcome some of these data mining challenges is introduced and justified in the first part of the book, alongside a specific protocol for the performance evaluation of algorithms. An introduction to metaheuristics follows. The second part of the book details a number of data mining tasks, including clustering, association rules, supervised classification and feature selection, before explaining how metaheuristics can be used to deal with them. This book is designed to be self-contained, so that readers can understand all of the concepts discussed within it, and to provide an overview of recent applications of metaheuristics to knowledge discovery problems in the context of Big Data.

Zare Zahra Loss and Compensation in Translation of Idioms

Translating prose fiction requires special considerations in terms of style. Preserving text style and features contributing to its uniqueness is elemental in prose fiction translation. This study addresses the use of idioms as a stylistic feature and the way they are translated in prose fiction. Idioms symbolize the dissimilarities among various languages and different cultures. They are usually exclusive to a particular language and specific to a single culture. This peculiarity makes them a thorny issue for translators. The present research is an attempt to investigate English translation of Persian idioms in a novel, Symphony of the Dead. It examines the procedures utilized for translation of idioms, probable losses and compensation of them. There exists adequate amount of research on translation of idioms, yet there hardly exists any research which has included loss and compensation in translation of idioms in its analysis. The findings may be useful for translators who are interested in translating literary texts especially fiction. It may also have something to offer for those scholars who are interested in literature and culture and those who choose to work on linguistics.
