Kristina Sobko Temperament and Computer Play Patterns in Preschool Age Children

Preschool children are gaining widespread computer access yet there is little known about how a child's personality affects his or her interest in computers. This book contains an academic empirical study which investigates the relationship between temperament and computer play patterns among preschool age children. The author went into 3 preschools, set up a computer play center, and asked teachers to provide their observations about each child's computer play. Parents were asked to fill out questionnaires about their children's temperament. Results indicate that there is interplay between children's gender, personality, and computer play patterns. Results of the study are discussed in light of the "goodness of fit model". This book would be of interest to researchers investigating topics of computer play and personality.

"Cognitive dissonance" is a frequent occurrence in our daily life. However, less than 1% of the studies of cognitive dissonance have also investigated individuals' personality traits. Individual differences might be quite important in moderating the strength of dissonance effects. Although cognitive dissonance is a common occurrence in most people's everyday life, the magnitude of the dissonance they experience may nonetheless differ from one person to another. The purpose of the study in this book is to investigate the relationships between personality traits and cognitive dissonance in a counter-attitudinal advocacy paradigm, with a special focus on the traits of openness to experience and strength of sense of self, and to examine whether the relationships in a novel on-line survey study form were different from the relationships in the standard laboratory setting.

After the separation or divorce, frequently a problem arises - with whom and in which country the children should reside? Parents often take their children to the country of their origin without the other custodial parent´s consent. According to several court decisions, it can be seen that the court practice has been quite dissimilar concerning child abduction cases. Although Child Abduction Convention provides that the child should not be returned only in exceptional circumstances, the court practice shows that in many cases proceedings of returning the child have taken years because of the deficient national regulation and helplessness of the national authorities.

The essential reference for human development theory, updated and reconceptualized The Handbook of Child Psychology and Developmental Science, a four-volume reference, is the field-defining work to which all others are compared. First published in 1946, and now in its Seventh Edition, the Handbook has long been considered the definitive guide to the field of developmental science. Volume 3: Social, Emotional, and Personality Development presentsup-to-date knowledge and theoretical understanding of the several facets of social, emotional and personality processes. The volume emphasizes that any specific processes, function, or behavior discussed in the volume co-occurs alongside and is inextricably affected by the dozens of other processes, functions, or behaviors that are the focus of other researchers' work. As a result, the volume underscores the importance of a focus on the whole developing child and his or her sociocultural and historical environment. Understand the multiple processes that are interrelated in personality development Discover the individual, cultural, social, and economic processes that contribute to the social, emotional, and personality development of individuals Learn about the several individual and contextual contributions to the development of such facets of the individual as morality, spirituality, or aggressive/violent behavior Study the processes that contribute to the development of gender, sexuality, motivation, and social engagement The scholarship within this volume and, as well, across the four volumes of this edition, illustrate that developmental science is in the midst of a very exciting period. There is a paradigm shift that involves increasingly greater understanding of how to describe, explain, and optimize the course of human life for diverse individuals living within diverse contexts. This Handbook is the definitive reference for educators, policy-makers, researchers, students, and practitioners in human development, psychology, sociology, anthropology, and neuroscience.

In this volume, gender and schooling in the early years addresses a broad range of issues including, but not limited, to gender equity in education. We explore, for example, the complex world of play in Fromberg's chapter and are reminded that for young children, play involvesissues of power and hierarchy in ways that parallel the role of gender in society. Miletta's study of preschool children in northern Italy, atReggio Emilia, reveals a story of classroom interactions where gender differences are not part of the equation for the youngsters. Her chapterbegs the question, "How does this environment empower all children, regardless of gender?" Two chapters provide a lens to the Montessorisetting for young children. Wilgus studies the gendered patterns of young women teaching at a Montessori school, while Irby, Rodriguez, and Lara-Alecio explore the intersections of culture and gender at a bilingual Montessori public school. Further examining the preschoolyears, Plaster and Schiller address the current brain research and examine the ways in which the adults that staff early child care programs, and the environments that they offer, play an important role in the development of our children.

Evidence exists showing Theory of Mind (ToM) impairments in psychoses; however the evidence within the psychoses spectra is inconclusive. Therefore this study aimed to explore ToM ability in schizotypal and hypomanic personalities within a non-clinical population. The results supported the notion of a phenotypal continuum where ToM impairment seemed to be evident even in non-clinical populations for hypomanic personality traits; however schizotypal traits were unaffected. The fact that personality traits were highly associated was discussed in terms of a symptom-specific rather than a diagnosis-specific approach. Particular aspects of ToM are suggested to be related to specific personality types and a symptom-specific intervention is proposed.

Anna Lena Hallmann Food Advertising to Children. A Critical Evaluation of Public, Governmental and Corporate Responsibilities in Germany

With increasing levels of child obesity, the food industry and its advertising techniques are ever more in the centre of public and academic discussion. While such discussion is complicated by the subjectivity of ethical understanding, the existing body of research also lacks evidence for the actual effects of child-directed advertising. In order to advance a solution in the persisting conflict, this paper critically examines public, governmental and corporate responsibilities. A reflection of theoretical and empirical research is therefore complemented by the collection of primary data - drawn from qualitative interviews with children and their parents. As means of implications for practice, the author drafts an organisational concept, namely the 'Initiative for the responsible use and creation of children's food advertising'.

An understanding of the symbolism of the child in dreams can help us make contact with our own inner child -- both the child we once were and the spontaneous, childlike side of our nature. Using examples of dreamwork from her analytical practice as well as themes from art, children's literature, and folklore, Dr. Asper shows how the motif of the child may point to: -- important information about forgotten experiences of the past-- New and future possibilities in our lives, especially during depression or transitional periods such as midlife-- Our capacity for play, creativity, and joy-- A renewal of spiritual life and the rediscovery of a lost childlike faith-- A way to heal the psychological wounds of childhood and embrace the future more freely and innocently

Eva M Simms The Child in the World. Embodiment, Time, and Language in Early Childhood

The Child in the World builds a bridge between continental philosophers, who tend to overlook child existence, and developmental psychologists, who often fail to consider the philosophical assumptions underlying their work. In this volume, author Eva M. Simms draws on both psychological and phenomenological research to investigate child existence in its cultural and historical context and explore the ways children interact with the world around them.Simms examines key experiences of childhood with special attention to the non-dualistic nature of the child’s consciousness and the understanding that there is more to the child’s experiences than cognitive processes. In chapters that proceed from infancy to early childhood, Simms considers how children live their embodiment, coexist with others, experience and the spaces and places of their neighborhoods, have deeply felt relations to things, grasp time intuitively and often in contradiction to adult clock-time, and are transformed by the mystery of the symbolic order of play and language.Simms’s approach is particularly informed by the philosophy of Maurice Merleau-Ponty, which allows for a descriptive and grounded understanding of child experience as well as sophisticated and critical philosophical thinking about human existence in general.By respecting and celebrating the magical non-dualistic relationship child consciousness has to the world, The Child in the World offers readers a unique opportunity to expand their understan...

Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2015 in the subject Social Pedagogy / Social Work, , language: English, abstract: The present research focuses on investigating the potential impact of the Scottish 'Getting it Right for Every Child' (GIRFEC) program intended to improve children's welfare. GIRFEC supports multi-agency work along with the delivery of children's care and assessment processes. As GIRFEC is a tested and maintained national approach for striving to work for the betterment of the children and young people living across Scotland, the researcher will carry out a research-based study to look for the strengths and weakness since it was implemented.A qualitative study was conducted by the researcher by interviewing volunteers and social workers that have been working in children care agencies. Semi-structured interviews were conducted to identify the research questions which were developed. The research revealed that there had been a positive and potential impact of GRIFEC for supporting multi-agency working to assist in children care. The strengths of the multi-agency cooperation included better collaboration, higher awareness of the project, better care for children, and better problem-solving by providing a combination of different social workers and volunteers to care for the children. However, at the same time the volunteers and the social workers also believe that there are certain limitations which also need to be highlighted.

This study assessed the content, frequency and distribution of worries among primary school children in Somanya, Ghana. In part one, 85 primary school children aged between 10-to-15 years listed their worries through a list generation technique and a focus group discussion. In part two, the worries generated by the children were categorized and a questionnaire was constructed for measuring frequency of typical worries. 120 primary school children of same age range ranked the frequency with which they worried. The list generation described the content of the children's worries, and were grouped under six main categories respecting the child's life namely, 'Personal care'; 'Education'; 'Breaking norms'; 'Family relationships'; 'Safety and Environment'; and 'Sickness and death'. The children's responses to the frequency scale indicated that their topmost worries related to 'Care'. The study documented gender and age difference in worries. This study examined the literate products and practices of children at an after school computer club known as Club Proteo. The participants in this study were children at a local after school computer club for children whose ages ranged from 5 to 12 years old. The analysis was grounded on a cultural historical activity theory (CHAT), coupled with a New Literacies Study (NLS) approach to literacy. I used an ethnographic approach (Spradley, 1980) to gather and analyze data regarding the participants' literate practices and the literate products over the course of one academic year (September 2001 through June 2002). Over these nine-months, 567 children's writing products and 719 undergraduate fieldnotes were collected. Results of the study bring to light the magnitude and range of literate practices and products at Club Proteo as tied to the larger social structure and practices of the club during the target year. Also, results suggest the importance of adult roles in children's in writing. This study offers a paradigm for further examination of writing at Club Proteo and at other after school environments.

Master's Thesis from the year 2015 in the subject Law - Public Law / Constitutional Law / Basic Rights, University of Buea, course: Thesis, language: English, abstract: Children are human beings below the age of 18 years. They are unique and privileged since they are a vulnerable group of human beings. Children have human rights such as the right to education, health and a standard of living. These rights have to be respected and protected. The ideas that animated the children's right movement developed after the Second World War and the atrocities of the Holocaust. Children are often victims of bad treatment, negative social and cultural practices, sexual abuse and all forms of economic hazardous exploitation. This research exposes child labour as a major infringement of child rights that needs to be eliminated. Children engage in this activity out of desperation or are forced. Although they are coming from poor families, some of them have to work. Others are trafficked and forced to work in plantations while others are in commercial sexual exploitation. It therefore becomes necessary to investigate on activities violating children's rights and possible mechanisms. This work adopts the doctrinal research method which is appropriate in law. It therefore makes use of content analysis. International legal instruments protecting children's rights at the international level are discussed in relation to the various rights of children. Jean Jean Piaget Language and Thought of the Child

2012 Reprint of 1926 American Edition. Exact facsimile of the original edition, not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. Jean Piaget was one of the most salient and inspirational figures in psychological and educational research this century. He was prolific, authoring or editing over eighty books and numerous journal papers which have spawned a huge and fertile continuation of his research over the decades. A major component of any course on children's psychological development and a research tradition that is expanding, scholars need access to the original texts rather than relying on secondhand accounts. Piaget wanted to revolutionize the way research methods were conducted. Although he started researching with his colleagues using a traditional method of data collection, he was not fully satisfied with the results and wanted to keep trying to find new ways of researching using a combination of data, which included: naturalistic observation, psychometrics, and the psychiatric clinical examination, in order to have a less guided form of research that would produce more genuine results. As Piaget developed new research methods, he wrote "The Language and Thought of the Child," which aimed to synthesize the methods he was using in order to study the conclusion children drew from situations and how they arrived to such conclusion. The main idea was to observe how children responded and articulated certain situations with their own reasoning, in order to ex...

Changing the hand washing behavior in a community is a challenge of different disciplines, including psychology and media practice. Distinct beliefs prevent people from washing their hands properly in critical moments. Moreover, each segment of the community has a different belief. Hence, adults, children, women, and men should be addressed differently. This experimental study explores the process of isolating and changing the beliefs of grade six students from the Chandba Primary School, in Chilga Local Administration North Gondar Zone Amhara Region, in Ethiopia. The intervention activities are done to increase a positive association with water and soap concerning the three critical moments, namely before eating, before touching or preparing food, and after defecation. The study describes the overall practical implementations of combined behavior change theories, and shows how they can be applied to the selection of target beliefs. The present study identifies important variables that are negatively and positively associated with hand hygiene. The results are based on a questionnaire, observations, and practical evaluation of hand washing skills that were identified during the four week intervention.• The study helps to develop communicators to change children's hygiene behavior.• It has significance in helping the participants to understand better ways of using locally available materials and methods for hygiene facilities preparation.• It shows the effectiveness of comb...

The study reported in this book examined five factors: socioeconomic status, level of education, employment, culture, and language that may be influential in parental assistance of their children's literacy development in the home. The data sources for this investigation included interview responses and a demographic survey. Data from 17 parents, each from a different household, and each with a child in kindergarten were obtained and used for the study. For analyses of these data, content analysis was used to identify similar themes among the interview responses and the demographic survey. Results indicated the following: (1) the time parents spent assisting their child with literacy activities was affected by long work hours, (2) parents with a yearly income of $25,000 or less were unable to provide additional literacy materials for their children, (3) lack of multicultural literature caused culturally diverse parents to feel devalued, and (4) parents who did not speak English fluently lacked the strategies to assist their children in completing English literacy homework.

“All aboard!” Grand Central Terminal, New York City, the late 1880s. An Irish boy and three German sisters are among those put on an “orphan train” headed West. Like thousands of impoverished immigrant children before them, they will be “placed out” along the way: given to strangers, farm couples who agree to foster them until age eighteen. Because siblings are routinely separated by placing them out at different train stops, the quartet’s lives inevitably diverge. They unfold in dramatic and unexpected ways as the orphan train riders grow into adulthood in Texas at the dawn of the twentieth century. Will all of them make it to adulthood? Will any of them ever see each other again?Full of action and surprises, Placed Out explores the meaning of courage, hope, friendship and “family.” The gripping, sprawling saga is the fictionalized account of the four orphan train riders and the people with whom their lives intersect. It chronicles their experiences as they make their way into young adulthood. Their story opens in New York City in the 1880s, but it unfolds in Texas as the 19th century draws to a close and the 20th century dawns.Between 1854 and 1929, Eastern cities placed an estimated quarter of a million homeless and destitute immigrant children on trains headed west. By the latter part of the 20th century, the trains had come to be known as the “orphan trains,” and the children as “orphan train riders.” The young riders were “placed out” to rural families in the hope they ...

Scientific Study from the year 2014 in the subject Pedagogy - School Pedagogics, grade: 82, , course: Mathematics Teaching, language: English, abstract: The aim of this study is to investigate how children learn Geometry (at all levels of compulsory education) in Mathematics. This study was chosen because of my difficulties in the area and the possible under-representation of Geometry in the Mathematics Curriculum. Five tasks were given to two students for each Key Stage 1-5 inclusive. These were then analysed using the "Van Hiele model of Geometric" reasoning; which was used to make an assessment of children's geometrical ability. The study also draws on theoretical frameworks from eminent researchers like Vygotsky, Piaget and Bruner as well as engaging fully with current educational literature and research. A questionnaire on Geometry was also completed by a variety of primary, secondary and A-level mathematics teachers. It was found that geometrical ability increases with age (although young children can display sophisticated knowledge of shape) and that students mainly drew shapes of a non-prototypical orientation. This has increased my subject knowledge and enhanced my classroom practice and also may have the implication of changing other practitioners' teaching strategies.
