Climate change impacts are currently being observed and studies show that poor countries are the most vulnerable. Using Bangladesh as a case study, this research examines the impacts of climate change to poor, rural communities and further explores the measures that are carried out to combat its existing and future threats. This research also aims to look into the existing socio-economic vulnerabilities of Bangladesh in order to establish the linkage between climate change and development. Findings of this study show that poor communities are impacted by climate change through the loss of lives, assets and livelihoods. Adaptation to climate change is therefore necessary and should be integrated in development planning and objectives, to ensure that the most vulnerable groups are represented. Overall this research has observed that Bangladesh is still lacking this capacity, despite the spontaneous adaptation being practised by local communities. The broader objective of the study is to assess the climate induced vulnerabilities and to view their adaptive capacity with the climate change vulnerabilities. Both purposive and simple random samplings were used to conduct this study. Data were collected from 120 respondents through interview schedule technique. In the interview schedule technique, question was asked and filled by the interviewers in face-to-face situation. Climate induced changes such as extreme cyclone, devastating tidal surges, severe floods, tremendous river erosion, excessive rainfall, overwhelming salinity intrusion etc, are occurring more frequently in greater intensities and in an unpredictable manner around the world including Bangladesh. To perceive the vulnerability, the southwestern coastal Bangladesh is selected as a research area where high vulnerability to natural climate is due to its low lying delta. External changes around urbanized areas can created new hazard problems, which some times completely unpredicted before. An example of an external change of a city that may create a new hazard is disturbances in the upstream river network that carry water stream into the city. The newly established river flow configuration can change the characteristics of water that entering the city, including volume, velocity, viscosity, etc. This book explores how to analyze possible impacts due to changes in the upstream river network to flood problems in an urbanized area using 1D2D flood modelling in SOBEK software, which was developed by Delft Hydraulics. Different flood scenarios were developed by adjusting the flood modelling parameters, and then, Flood Hazard Analysis and Flood Risk Analysis were performed to determine the extent of flood problems caused by changes in the upstream river network. Results of the flood modelling show that indeed, urban areas are facing an increasing flood hazard due to changes in upstream river network.

In Bangladesh, climate vulnerability is increasing along with poverty. But during international climate change debates, concern over 'justice' is glowing to finance adaptation. In this line, Bangladesh formulated 'National Adaptation Programme of Action (NAPA)' under UNFCCC guidance to abate climate change impact. The research views 'mainstreaming' as a process of promoting 'adaptation' to "transform vulnerability into (climate) security". In Bangladesh, NAPA mainstreaming is government-led and subject to use existing institutions and regulatory frameworks. Therefore, in what extend NAPA mainstreaming will be successful to promote 'socially-just adaptation to climate change' is difficult to predict. Here, the context is critically analyzed to structure institutional problems and actor dynamics to recommend policy amendments for intended mainstreaming. However, successful mainstreaming lies on balancing conflicts among diverse actors in order to promote security for the vulnerable people. Therefore, the research is arguing that the treatment of social justice must be included both in NAPA formulation and implementation phases for intended (socially-just) mainstreaming.

Hence, land ownership becomes a crucial factor for capacity of the households while facing challenges of both poverty and vulnerability.So these empirical study-findings conclude that possible effects of climate change worsen poverty in coastal Bangladesh.

The major crops present a very little change in the productivity due to change in climate. Their co-efficient of variations are more or less uniform except for cotton the variation in cotton is observed in the latter half of the period of study. Its rise in productivity may due to the adoption of new technology in cultivation and the use of modern implements in agriculture. Thus climate change has no direct impact of major crops.

Uncertainties are pervasive in natural hazards, and it is crucial to develop robust and meaningful approaches to characterize and communicate uncertainties to inform modeling efforts. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) estimates that the global mean surface temperature has increased 0.6 ± 0.2 oC since 1861, and predicts an increase of 2 to 4 oC over the next 100 years. Temperature increases also affect the hydrologic cycle by directly increasing evaporation of available surface water and vegetation transpiration. Consequently, these changes can influence precipitation amounts, timings and intensity rates, and indirectly impact the flux and storage of water in surface and subsurface reservoirs (i.e., lakes, soil moisture, groundwater). In addition, there may be other associated impacts, such as sea water intrusion, water quality deterioration, potable water shortage, etc. While climate change affects surface water resources directly through changes in the major long-term climate variables such as air temperature, precipitation, and evapotranspiration, the relationship between the changing climate variables and groundwater is more complicated and poorly understood. The greater variability in rainfall could mean more frequent and prolonged periods of high or low groundwater levels, and saline intrusion in coastal aquifers due to sea level rise and resource reduction. Besides a literature analysis, empirical data was collected through qualitative interviews for this study. Two different surveys were undertaken: one with international tour operators that are already active in climate protection and one with tour operators in Namibia. The interviewed companies all used carbon offsetting by either managing an own project to compensate emissions or by cooperating with an offsetting agency. In addition to descriptive statistics, Heckman two stage sample selection model was employed to examine farmer's perceptions and adaptations of climate change. Farmers level of education, household nonfarm income, livestock ownership, extension on crop and livestock, households' credit accessibility, perception of increase in temperature and perception of decrease in precipitation significantly affect the adaptation to climate change. Similarly, farmers' perception of climate change was affected significantly by information on climate, farmer to farmer extension, local agro -ecology, number of relatives in development group and perception of change in duration of season. Data for the study were obtained by the use of a questionnaire at 0.05 level of significance and 99 degree of freedom. From the analysis, it was found that flood, desertification, land degradation, cessation of rain and drought are the major indicators of climate change in Nigeria. Insufficient extension services, lack of farmers enlightenment, negligence of government, religious/traditional believes of farmers and low farmers income are found to be major reasons the farming communities are highly vulnerable to climate change. Based on the above findings, conclusion, recommendations and suggestions for further studies were made.

Egypt is vulnerable to climate change, especially with regard to its water and land resources. Climate change will increase the evaporation losses from the High Aswan Dam Reservoir (HADR) and lead to loss of land at the northern coast due to sea level rise. In order to tackle this problem, this book assesses several adaptation tools that could be used to mitigate some of these impacts. For instance, Egypt could optimize ist water resources by decreasing evaporation losses from the HADR, or it could maximize land resources by identifying new settlement sites especially for climate migrants from the northern coastal zones. Databases on the characteristics of the HADR such as meteorological, hydrological, topographic and bed soil sedimentary data were compiled. Based on these databases, up-to-date mathematical models were developed to describe the hydrological characteristics of the HADR. Several options for reducing evaporation losses and new settlement areas were discovered and evaluated. Essential measures to preserve these areas were presented to promote sustainable development in this region.

Worldwide, floodplains of rivers are under strong pressure due to ongoing development of settlement, commercial, industrial and traffic areas. In the context of integrated flood risk management this trend implicates various adverse consequences, since firstly natural flood storage volume is reduced (thus leading to accelerated and increased flood peaks further downstream) and secondly since flood risk is magnified in these newly developed areas due to the accumulation of high-valuable goods. Therefore, in this work, the change of land use along the Tyrolean Inn was examined. The last 60 years, from 1950 to 2010 were investigated quantitatively with the help of ortho pictures, aerial photographs and the area zoning plan. For investigating historical changes, a qualitative analysis of morphological changes and settlement development was performed. Therefore, the three Landesaufnahmen from 1800, 1820 and 1880 were used. The aim was to detect if there is a change in flood discharge behavior due to the change of land use.
