Cluster or co-cluster analyses are important tools in a variety of scientific areas. The introduction of this book presents a state of the art of already well-established, as well as more recent methods of co-clustering. The authors mainly deal with the two-mode partitioning under different approaches, but pay particular attention to a probabilistic approach. Chapter 1 concerns clustering in general and the model-based clustering in particular. The authors briefly review the classical clustering methods and focus on the mixture model. They present and discuss the use of different mixtures adapted to different types of data. The algorithms used are described and related works with different classical methods are presented and commented upon. This chapter is useful in tackling the problem of co-clustering under the mixture approach. Chapter 2 is devoted to the latent block model proposed in the mixture approach context. The authors discuss this model in detail and present its interest regarding co-clustering. Various algorithms are presented in a general context. Chapter 3 focuses on binary and categorical data. It presents, in detail, the appropriated latent block mixture models. Variants of these models and algorithms are presented and illustrated using examples. Chapter 4 focuses on contingency data. Mutual information, phi-squared and model-based co-clustering are studied. Models, algorithms and connections among different approaches are described and illustrated. Chapter 5 presents the case of continuous data. In the same way, the different approaches used in the previous chapters are extended to this situation. Contents 1. Cluster Analysis. 2. Model-Based Co-Clustering. 3. Co-Clustering of Binary and Categorical Data. 4. Co-Clustering of Contingency Tables. 5. Co-Clustering of Continuous Data. About the Authors Gérard Govaert is Professor at the University of Technology of Compiègne, France. He is also a member of the CNRS Laboratory Heudiasyc (Heuristic and diagnostic of complex systems). His research interests include latent structure modeling, model selection, model-based cluster analysis, block clustering and statistical pattern recognition. Data Clustering is process of organizing data into specific groups, the characteristics of which are unknown. Data clustering has been studied for a long time by many researchers with different methods. Traditional clustering techniques has some drawbacks. In this book, we deals with such limitations of traditional clustering techniques. To overcome these drawback we have selected 'Nature-Inspired / Swarm Intelligence' technique that is 'Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO)' for data clustering. As we know, nature is always a source of inspiration. In last few decades, the research is stimulated on new computing paradigms and result of this effort is emergence of new problem solving techniques. These techniques are widely used due to their decentralized and self-organized behaviour.

Gustavo Marqués A Philosophical Framework for Rethinking Theoretical Economics and Philosophy of Economics

This book sets out to encourage a debate about the role that economic theory and philosophy of economics can play. A good part of economics consists of theoretical developments which describe completely imaginary worlds and have no connections to actual market economies. If the purpose of theoretical and philosophical analysis in economics is to make a contribution to find out how modern market economies work and which kind of theoretical practice will be useful for the implementation of successful economic policies, a shift both in philosophy of economics and economics itself is needed. Exposing the ungrounded pretensions of the mainstream philosophy of economics, Marqués’ carefully argued book is a major contribution to the ongoing debate on contemporary mainstream economics and its methodological and philosophical underpinnings. Even those who disagree with his conclusions will benefit from his thorough and deep critique of the modeling strategies used in modern economics. Lars Pålsson Syll, Malmö University, Sweden Is ‘mainstream philosophy of economics’ only about models and imaginary worlds created to represent economic theories? Marqués questions this epistemic focus and calls for the ontological examination of real world economic processes. This book is a serious challenge to standard thinking and an alternative program for a pluralist philosophy of economics.John Davis, Marquette University, USA and University of Amsterdam In recent decades economists have focused he...

Economics and Reality

There is an increasingly widespread belief, both within and outside the discipline, that modern economics is irrelevant to the understanding of the real world. Economics and Reality traces this irrelevance to the failure of economists to match their methods with their subject, showing that formal, mathematical models are unsuitable to the social realities economists purport to address. Tony Lawson examines the various ways in which mainstream economics is rooted in positivist philosophy and examines the problems this causes. It focuses on human agency, social structure and their interaction and explores how the understanding of this social phenomena can be used to transform the nature of economic practice. Economics and Reality concludes by showing how this newly transformed economics might set about shaping economic policy.

How much do economists really know? In most cases, they claim to have profound knowledge but in fact understand little and obscure almost everything. Most people are convinced that economics should be left to the 'experts', when they themselves are perfectly capable of understanding it. This book explains that mainstream economics serves the interests of the rich through its logical inconsistency and unabashedly reactionary conclusions. John F. Weeks exposes the myths of mainstream economics and explains in straightforward language why current policies fail to serve the vast majority of people in the United States, Europe and elsewhere. Their failure to serve the interests of the many results from their devoted service to the few.

Shannawaz Mohd Mortality During Infancy and Its Clustering in India

The level of infant mortality has been regarded as an explicit indicator to measure the extent of health problems associated with a population as well as its socio-economic development. Since the Indian states are quite diverse in the social, economic, cultural geographical and environmental conditions, they also differ in the pace of mortality transition. Some states have very less infant, neonatal and postnatal mortality like Kerala and while some has very high infant, neonatal and postnatal mortality like Madhya Pradesh. Although the overall infant mortality rate of India is declining, there is some retardation with the pace of decline of infant mortality rate. The present levels of infant and child mortality are quite high and need immediate attention. Consequently, for the policy makers, this remains a difficult task to tackle. National family health survey-1992-93, 1998-99 and 2005-06 data are used for the analysis. The result shows that there is clustering of infant deaths in the major Indian states and it is not uniformly distributed with different socio-economic characteristics. Infant death clustering increased significantly over the time.

Aslahi Shahri Bibi Masoomeh Intrusion Detection System Using Hybrid Gsa-kmeans

Security is an important aspect in our daily life. Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS) are developed to be the defense against security threats. Current signature based IDS like firewalls and antiviruses, which rely on labeled training data, generally cannot detect novel attacks. The purpose of this study is to improve the performance of IDS in terms of detection accuracy and reduce False Alarm Rate (FAR). Clustering is an important task in data mining that is used in IDS applications to detect novel attacks. Clustering refers to grouping together data objects so that objects within a cluster are similar to one another, while objects in different clusters are dissimilar. K-Means is a simple and efficient algorithm that is widely used for data clustering. However, its performance depends on the initial state of centroids and may trap in local optima. The Gravitational Search Algorithm (GSA) is one effective method for searching problem space to find a near optimal solution. In this study, a hybrid approach based on GSA and k-Means (GSA-kMeans), which uses the advantages of both algorithms, is presented.

Explores regular structures in graphs and contingency tables by spectral theory and statistical methods This book bridges the gap between graph theory and statistics by giving answers to the demanding questions which arise when statisticians are confronted with large weighted graphs or rectangular arrays. Classical and modern statistical methods applicable to biological, social, communication networks, or microarrays are presented together with the theoretical background and proofs. This book is suitable for a one-semester course for graduate students in data mining, multivariate statistics, or applied graph theory; but by skipping the proofs, the algorithms can also be used by specialists who just want to retrieve information from their data when analysing communication, social, or biological networks. Spectral Clustering and Biclustering: Provides a unified treatment for edge-weighted graphs and contingency tables via methods of multivariate statistical analysis (factoring, clustering, and biclustering). Uses spectral embedding and relaxation to estimate multiway cuts of edge-weighted graphs and bicuts of contingency tables. Goes beyond the expanders by describing the structure of dense graphs with a small spectral gap via the structural eigenvalues and eigen-subspaces of the normalized modularity matrix. Treats graphs like statistical data by combining methods of graph theory and statistics. Establishes a common outline structure for the contents of each algorithm, applicable to networks and microarrays, with unified notions and principles.

This book gives insights in the understanding of the impact of Agricultural subsidies on the benefiting small scale farmers. Most developing countries who are promoting and implementing pro-poor policies use Agricultural subsidies with a view to increasing Agricultural production and reduce poverty among the small scale farmers. Such economic policies may, however, not achieve the intended objectives. Therefore, using this book, the Economic Analysis Student or Agricultural Economics and/or Economics Student will find it very useful to understand the dynamics of Agricultural subsidies and how they impact or benefit the small scale farmers. In addition, the book is very helpful to both under graduate and Post graduate Economic Policy analysis, Agricultural Economics and Economics students who wish to understand the impact of Agricultural subsidies.

Edgar Luna Metaphysical Foundations of Mathematics in Economics

Economics is supposed to fall somewhere between a hard science and a social science. During the last half century, economics has become highly mathematical trying to mimic physics. The purpose of this study is to look at the metaphysical statements linked to mathematical models, specifically, Game Theory. In doing so, it will be demonstrated that Game Theory, as part of neoclassical economics, engages in analysis which can be categorized as metaphysical, with real metaphysical implications. In categorizing the metaphysical assumptions of neoclassical economists/game theorists we will see how much of their analysis is consists in a reductive, implausible metaphysical view. Problems that arise from this view are hardly taken into consideration most economists. This lack of consideration has nontrivial consequences for economics as a discipline and for its methodology.

Law is supposed to encourage innovation, morality, and conformity with societal expectations, yet it may provides perverse incentives causing individuals, or even the State, to act in discordant, inefficient, and even immoral ways. This book will explore the inefficiencies that are created that serve to deny individuals work and shelter in a haphazard and capricious manner. The author examines property rights, including eminent domain, that lets the State take property away with seemingly arbitrary compensation to the owner. Individuals must understand both civil law, codified by statutes, and common law, enshrined in precedential judicial decisions. This book is written for economists and non-economists and has an extensive glossary of economic, political and legal terms. Two items that are not formally treated in other economics of law textbooks are the legal organization of businesses and tax law from an economics perspective.

Seminar paper from the year 2014 in the subject Economics - Macro-economics, general, grade: A3, Hacettepe University (Department of Economics), course: International Political Economy, language: English, abstract: Growth economics is the branch of economics answering questions related to what are determinants of economic growth; whether is it possible to reach a maintainable growth rate on the long run, if it is preferable to let governments interfere in market performance in order to fasten rates of economic growth. Harrod and Domar attempted to answer these questions through applying Keynes economics for economic analysis. They found that savings and investments stable rates are the key for rapid long term growth especially in developing countries. Therefore, government intervention was needed to help stimulate savings and investments. Years later, Solow and Swan attempted to answer same questions through their neoclassical growth model. In this model, it was assumed that a maintained rising saving rates leads to transition from slow growth into fast growth path. This meant a focus on technological progress. However, part of the growth was not explained by growth in production factors which are capital and labor. Solow stated that this unexplained factor was the residual or total factor productivity. Therefore, government policies were assumed to be effective on aggregate output not on growth rates.

Samira Penner Happiness economics. How to measure growth and welfare.

Submitted Assignment from the year 2016 in the subject Economics - Other, grade: 2.0, University of applied sciences, Düsseldorf, course: Economics, language: English, abstract: Everybody wants to be happy. There is probably no other goal in life that commands such a high degree of consensus, because to most people, happiness is all they want and try to achieve. Thus, happiness has long been considered the ultimate human goal in life. Even Aristotle considered happiness the ultimate motive for all human action. In today's consumer culture, this happiness is often pursued in the marketplace. Yet, economists have refused to deal with individuals' happiness a long time but considered it to be an "unscientific" concept. However, in the past few years the situation has changed and economic science has experienced the introduction or reintroduction of individuals' happiness into economics. While traditionally economics has almost exclusively focused on consumption, wealth and other monetary indicators to measure individuals' well-being, it now more and more adopts the subjective notion of well-being to analyze how economic determinants such as income, wealth and employment as well as non-economic determinants such as personality traits and socio-demographic factors affect individuals' utility and life satisfaction. Although Easterlin already examined correlations between economic growth and welfare and individual happiness, it still took about twenty yea...

A novel approach to decision engineering, with a verified framework for modeling human reasoning Soft Computing Evaluation Logic provides an in-depth examination of evaluation decision problems and presents comprehensive guidance toward the use of the Logic Scoring of Preference (LSP) method in modeling complex decision criteria. Fully aligned with current developments in computational intelligence, the discussion covers the design and use of LSP criteria for evaluation and comparison in diverse areas, such as search engines, medical conditions, real estate, space management, habitat mitigation projects in ecology, and land use and residential development suitability maps, with versatile transfer to other similar decision-modeling contexts. Human decision making is rife with fuzziness, imprecision, uncertainty, and half-truths—yet humans make evaluation decisions every day. In this book, such decision processes are observed, analyzed, and modeled. The result is graded logic, a soft computing mathematical infrastructure that provides both formal logic and semantic generalizations of classical Boolean logic. Graded logic is used for logic aggregation in the context of evaluation models consistent with observable properties of human reasoning. The LSP method, based on graded logic and logic aggregation, is a vital component of an industrial-strength decision engineering framework. Thus, the book: Provides detailed theoretical background for graded logic Provides a theory of logic aggregators Explains the LSP method for designing complex evaluation criteria and their use Shows techniques for evaluation, comparison, and selection of complex systems, as well as the cost/suitability analysis, optimization, sensitivity analysis, tradeoff analysis, and missingness-tolerant aggregation Includes a survey of available LSP software tools, including ISEE, ANSY and LSP.NT. With quantitative modeling of human reasoning, novel approaches to modeling decision criteria, and a verified decision engineering framework applicable to a broad array of applications, this book is an invaluable resource for graduate students, researchers, and practitioners working within the decision engineering realm.

Sheds new light on intrinsically disordered proteins and peptides, including their role in neurodegenerative diseases With the discovery of intrinsically disordered proteins and peptides (IDPs), researchers realized that proteins do not necessarily adopt a well defined secondary and tertiary structure in order to perform biological functions. In fact, IDPs play biologically relevant roles, acting as inhibitors, scavengers, and even facilitating DNA/RNA-protein interactions. Due to their propensity for self-aggregation and fibril formation, some IDPs are involved in neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson's and Alzheimer's. With contributions from leading researchers, this text reviews the most recent studies, encapsulating our understanding of IDPs. The authors explain how the growing body of IDP research is building our knowledge of the folding process, the binding of ligands to receptor molecules, and peptide self-aggregation. Readers will discover a variety of experimental, theoretical, and computational approaches used to better understand the properties and function of IDPs. Moreover, they'll discover the role of IDPs in human disease and as drug targets. Protein and Peptide Folding, Misfolding, and Non-Folding begins with an introduction that explains why research on IDPs has significantly expanded in the past few years. Next, the book is divided into three sections: Conformational Analysis of Unfolded States Disordered Peptides and Molecular Recognition Aggregation of Disordered Peptides Throughout the book, detailed figures help readers understand the structure, properties, and function of IDPs. References at the end of each chapter serve as a gateway to the growing body of literature in the field. With the publication of Protein and Peptide Folding, Misfolding, and Non-Folding, researchers now have a single place to discover IDPs, their diverse biological functions, and the many disciplines that have contributed to our evolving understanding of them.

Alfred Marshall's work influenced half a century of financial philosophy. Though the bulk of his work was completed before the turn of the 20th century, the global ramifications of World War I prompted him to reconsider his theories on international economics, and in 1919 he published the two-volume Industry and Trade. Presented here in one combined volume, he discusses:• the relationship between trade and industry• technical influences on industrial economies• modern finance and business organization• how monopolies and competition impact prices• unions, co-opts, and business federations• and much more.British economist ALFRED MARSHALL (1842-1924) was one of the most prominent thinkers of his age on the philosophy of finance, and his groundbreaking Principles of Economics (1890) was for years the standard text on the subject. Other works include The Economics of Industry and Industry and Trade.

He is one of the authors of the MIXMOD (MIXtureMODelling) software. Mohamed Nadif is Professor at the University of Paris-Descartes, France, where he is a member of LIPADE (Paris Descartes computer science laboratory) in the Mathematics and Computer Science department. His research interests include machine learning, data mining, model-based cluster analysis, co-clustering, factorization and data analysis. Cluster Analysis is an important tool in a variety of scientific areas. Chapter 1 briefly presents a state of the art of already well-established as well more recent methods. The hierarchical, partitioning and fuzzy approaches will be discussed amongst others. The authors review the difficulty of these classical methods in tackling the high dimensionality, sparsity and scalability. Chapter 2 discusses the interests of coclustering, presenting different approaches and defining a co-cluster. The authors focus on co-clustering as a simultaneous clustering and discuss the cases of binary, continuous and co-occurrence data. The criteria and algorithms are described and illustrated on simulated and real data. Chapter 3 considers co-clustering as a model-based co-clustering. A latent block model is defined for different kinds of data. The estimation of parameters and co-clustering is tackled under two approaches: maximum likelihood and classification maximum likelihood. Hard and soft algorithms are described and applied on simulated and real data. Chapter 4 considers co-clustering as a matrix approximation. The trifactorization approach is considered and algorithms based on update rules are described. Links with numerical and probabi
