Discharge of heavy metals in wastewater can be toxic to aquatic life and render natural waters as they become unsuitable for human consumption due to their tendency to accumulate in living organisms. These problem are good reasons to search an efficient economically cheap methods with easy technology to removal heavy from polluted water. The removal of heavy metals from aqueous solutions in this work herein is investigated by an adsorption of heavy metals on a local Libyan Soil called Ashkida soil mined in the Southern Province of Libya. The soil efficiency and removal capacity of heavy metals from aqueous solutions was experimentally investigated in a batch system. The experiments are performed in a batch system at room temperature. It is aimed to study the effects of some parameters of heavy metals adsorption capacity on the soil. A comparison of equilibrium isotherms and kinetic models applied to the adsorption of heavy metals ions on the adsorbent, and parameters were calculated. The adsorption process was physisorption and controlled by an endothermic reaction; however, an efficient heavy metals removal can be achieved at ambient temperature.

This book deals with the thermodynamic parameters of the adsorption of dyes specially methylene blue (MB) on different low-cost adsorbents. The comparison of enthalpy change (ΔH°) and entropy change (ΔS°) clearly divides the adsorbents into two groups, namely, inert or inorganic and natural or lignocellulosic adsorbents. The former group follows the van't Hoff equation and no compensation effect is required in the computation of enthalpy and entropy changes. On the other hand the second group requires the consideration of compensation effect which is generally overlooked by almost all of the authors. Although the calorimetry is the best solution to get the reliable values of thermodynamic parameters in almost all systems, a quick estimate is generally obtained from the equilibrium constant especially in adsorption studies. It might be acceptable in inorganic adsorbents due to low compensation temperature but it would be more erroneous in lignocellulosic adsorbents hence their contribution need be accounted for to get more reliable results.

Adsorbents which are derived from carbon, alumina, zeolite, clay minerals, iron ores, industrial by products, and natural products viz. parts of the plants, herbs and algal biomass offer promising potential of removal of these pollutants with greater adsorbing efficiencies.

Document from the year 2018 in the subject Engineering - Chemical Engineering, The University of Malaya, language: English, abstract: Granular palm shell activated carbon (AC) was impregnated separately with monoethanolamine (MEA) and 2-amino-2-methyl-1-propanol (AMP) to improve its natural capacity and selectivity for carbon dioxide (CO2) adsorption. The total surface area, micropore volume, as well as the heterogeneity of the impregnated AC particles was considerably reduced due to impregnation. CO2 intake of impregnated 500 μm AC particles improved significantly and adsorptive capacity of 500 μm MEA-impregnated AC particles improved by 172 % and 44 % comparing to non-impregnated and AMP-impregnated AC particles respectively. Solid state amine stoichiometric results indicated that adsorption capacity of unhindered amine (MEA) is higher than that of hindered amine (AMP) by 50 % contrary to liquid amines standard stoichiometry. Exhausted AMPimpregnated beds were regenerated by sweeping at room temperature with stream of pure nitrogen (N2) flowing at 60 ml/min for 4 hours. Heating up to 75 °C was required to regenerate exhausted MEA-impregnated beds. Increasing feed gas flow rate has adverse effect on breakthrough time more than increasing bed operating temperature. Breakthrough time was utilized to evaluate the performance of the different adsorption beds.

Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2016 in the subject Chemistry - Materials Chemistry, grade: 10, , language: English, abstract: The corrosion inhibition mechanism of Chlorophenicol and Hydralazine for the mild steel in 1M HCl was studied by chemical, electrochemical and adsorption measurement at 303-333 K temperature regions. The inhibition efficiency of the Chlorophenical and Hydralazine increases with increasing inhibitor but decreases with increase of temperature. The mechanism of the inhibition action attributed due to the adsorption of inhibitor on the surface of the metal, for which this adsorption process obeys Langmuir adsorption isotherm. The electrochemical Tafel analysis shows that the inhibitor acts as a mixed type, and gets adsorbed by either physically or chemically. Surface study was done by scanning electron microscopic method due to the formation of protective film on the metal surface.

Early biological treatment studies with the raw leachate did not yield high COD and nitrogen removals. In order to improve biological treatability, the landfill leachate was subjected to pretreatment by chemical coagulation-flocculation followed by air stripping of ammonia. The pretreated leachate was subjected to aerobic biological treatment in an aeration tank by fed-batch operation. In order to improve the extent of COD and ammonium nitrogen removals, pretreated leachate was subjected to adsorbent supplemented biological treatment in an aeration tank operated in fed-batch mode by using powdered zeolite (PZ) and powdered activated carbon (PAC) as adsorbents. Chemical oxidation was used to further reduce COD content of landfill leachate after PAC added biological treatment. Three oxidizing agents (H2O2, Fenton’s reagent, NaOCl) were used in different concentrations for chemical oxidation.

This water may either be treated or untreated. River banks could be very busy, varied activities ranging from farming to industrial activities and other domestic household activities are conducted. The present study aimed at investigating the potential sources of selected heavy metal contaminants in River Mukurumudzi, Kwale County. Water and sediments were sampled in four points along the river impacted by mining, human settlements and agricultural activities for three different seasons. The samples were analyzed for Iron, Lead, Cadmium, Copper and Arsenic using an AAS. Sediment quality was also analysed by the calculation of CF and I-geo values. Interpretation of results was conducted using Minitab statistical software and Excel spreadsheets. The range of metals in water during the dry season was Fe (0.19-0.32) mg/l, Pb, Cu, Cd and As were below the detection limits. The range of metals in water during the short rain was Fe (0.12-1.25) mg/l and BDL for all other analysed metals. The range of metals in water during the long rain season was Fe (0.07-1.82) mg/l, Cu (0.08-0.11) mg/l and BDL for all the other analysed metals. The author studied the preparation of chelating resins with amine, thio and amine/mercaptan and iminoacetic acid functionalities based on Glycidyl methacrylate–divinylbenzene resin. The resins showed a powerful adsorption behavior towards transition and non-transition metal ions such as Au(III), Hg(II), Ca(II), Mg(II), Cd(II), Zn(II)...etc. The mechanism of interaction between metal ions and resin active sites were clarified. The nature of interaction between the metal ion and the resin was found to be dependent upon the acidity of the medium as well as the type of the conjugate anion.This interaction was found to proceed via complex formation or ion exchange mechanism. The resin samples loaded with metal ions can be regenerated using different mineral acids or acidified thiourea without significant activity loss.

The aim of this work was to improve the understanding of the important parameters in the formation process of 2D nanostructures (e.g. self-assembled structures, metal-organic frameworks, covalent organic frameworks) and, therefore, pioneer for novel applications. 2D nanostructures are composed of specially designed building blocks - organic molecules that are functionalized either with carboxylic groups, halogens, or thiols groups. These building blocks are able to form true 2D nanostructures by adsorption on various surfaces (e.g. graphite, metals). Their properties and chemical reactions during the formation process have been investigated by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) under ultra-high vacuum conditions as well as under ambient conditions. Complementary surface analysis techniques such as low-energy electron diffraction, X-Ray photo-emission spectroscopy, and Raman spectroscopy were used when necessary to characterize these novel molecular networks.

Scientific Study from the year 2016 in the subject Biology - Botany, Bansthali University, language: English, abstract: Out of 90 naturally occurring elements, 53 are considered as heavy metals, however, not all of them have biological significance. Heavy metals cannot be smashed, but can only be altered from one state to another. On the basis of their solubility in physiological conditions, 17 heavy metals are obtainable for living cells and of significance for the organism and ecosystem. Among these metals, Fe, Mn and Mo are important as micronutrients; Cu, Co, Cr, Ni, V, W and Zn are noxious elements with high or low importance as trace elements. Most common heavy metals, namely, Cu, Cd and Zn create the major problem in contaminated soils that is completely different from organic pollutants. Unlike organic pollutants, these heavy metals cannot be biodegraded and therefore exist in the environment for extended periods of time. Hence, environmental pollution caused by these heavy metals becomes more frightening and tricky with ever increasing unplanned mining and unconstrained industrial activities. In present scenario of increasing industrialization, soil and water contamination is exceptionally alarming and widespread all over the developing world, including highly populated countries like China and India.
