Explains how GIS enhances the development of chemical fate and transport models Over the past decade, researchers have discovered that geographic information systems (GIS) are not only excellent tools for managing and displaying maps, but also useful in the analysis of chemical fate and transport in the environment. Among its many benefits, GIS facilitates the identification of critical factors that drive chemical fate and transport. Moreover, GIS makes it easier to communicate and explain key model assumptions. Based on the author's firsthand experience in environmental assessment, GIS Based Chemical Fate Modeling explores both GIS and chemical fate and transport modeling fundamentals, creating an interface between the two domains. It then explains how GIS analytical functions enable scientists to develop simple, yet comprehensive spatially explicit chemical fate and transport models that support real-world applications. In addition, the book features: Practical examples of GIS based model calculations that serve as templates for the development of new applications Exercises enabling readers to create their own GIS based models Accompanying website featuring downloadable datasets used in the book's examples and exercises References to the literature, websites, data repositories, and online reports to facilitate further research Coverage of important topics such as spatial decision support systems and multi-criteria analysis as well as ecological and human health risk assessment in a spatial context GIS Based Chemical Fate Modeling makes a unique contribution to the environmental sciences by explaining how GIS analytical functions enhance the development and interpretation of chemical fate and transport models. Environmental scientists should turn to this book to gain a deeper understanding of the role of GIS in describing what happens to chemicals when they are released into the environment.

Uncontrolled rapid urban growth due to built-up area expansion over the last few decades has created critical problems to urban planners. Therefore, it is worth to identify spatial distribution pattern of built-up area in a town. Remote Sensing (RS) and Geographical Information System (GIS) provide a great potential for urban data collection & spatial analysis and not much academic literature exists on how to best utilize these technologies for urban studies. Traditional approaches to data collection and analysis no longer adequate to provide updated information for urban planners. This book, therefore, introduces alternative techniques for data collection, updating, detection of built-up area change and unauthorised constructions, identifying urban spatial distribution pattern considering built-up area density. New GIS spatial analysis techniques such as weighted mean centre and spatial autocorrelation tools introduced. These analysis techniques should help to shed light on the field of urban planning, and should be especially useful to students and professionals in urban planning or anyone else who may be considering utilizing RS and GIS for urban spatial structure analysis.

Systems engineering is the design of a complex interconnection of many elements (a system) to maximize a specific measure of system performance. It consists of two parts: modeling, in which each element of the system and its performance criteria are described; and optimization in which adjustable elements are tailored to allow peak performance. Systems engineering is applied to vast numbers of problems in industry and the military. An example of systems engineering at work is the control of the timing of thousands of city traffic lights to maximize traffic flow. The complex and intricate field of electronics and computers is perfectly suited for systems engineering analysis and in turn, advances in communications and computer technology have made more advanced systems engineering problems solvable. Thus, the two areas fed off of one another. This book is a basic introduction to the use of models and methods in the engineering design of systems. It is aimed at students as well as practicing engineers. The concept of the «systems of systems» is discussed extensively, after a critical comparison of the different definitions and a range of various practical illustrations. It also provides key answers as to what a system of systems is and how its complexity can be mastered.

In recent years, control systems have become more sophisticated in order to meet increased performance and safety requirements for modern technological systems. Engineers are becoming more aware that conventional feedback control design for a complex system may result in unsatisfactory performance, or even instability, in the event of malfunctions in actuators, sensors or other system components. In order to circumvent such weaknesses, new approaches to control system design have emerged which can tolerate component malfunctions while maintaining acceptable stability and performance. These types of control systems are often known as fault-tolerant control systems (FTCS). More precisely, FTCS are control systems which possess the ability to accommodate component failure automatically. Analysis and Synthesis of Fault-Tolerant Control Systems comprehensively covers the analysis and synthesis methods of fault tolerant control systems. It unifies the methods for developing controllers and filters for a wide class of dynamical systems and reports on the recent technical advances in design methodologies. MATLAB® is used throughout the book, to demonstrate methods of analysis and design. Key features: • Provides advanced theoretical methods and typical practical applications • Provides access to a spectrum of control design methods applied to industrial systems • Includes case studies and illustrative examples • Contains end-of-chapter problems Analysis and Synthesis of Fault-Tolerant Control Systems is a comprehensive reference for researchers and practitioners working in this area, and is also a valuable source of information for graduates and senior undergraduates in control, mechanical, aerospace, electrical and mechatronics engineering departments.

A highly valued resource for those who wish to move from the introductory and preliminary understandings and the measurement of chaotic behavior to a more sophisticated and precise understanding of chaotic systems. The authors provide a deep understanding of the structure of strange attractors, how they are classified, and how the information required to identify and classify a strange attractor can be extracted from experimental data. In its first edition, the Topology of Chaos has been a valuable resource for physicist and mathematicians interested in the topological analysis of dynamical systems. Since its publication in 2002, important theoretical and experimental advances have put the topological analysis program on a firmer basis. This second edition includes relevant results and connects the material to other recent developments. Following significant improvements will be included: * A gentler introduction to the topological analysis of chaotic systems for the non expert which introduces the problems and questions that one commonly encounters when observing a chaotic dynamics and which are well addressed by a topological approach: existence of unstable periodic orbits, bifurcation sequences, multistability etc. * A new chapter is devoted to bounding tori which are essential for achieving generality as well as for understanding the influence of boundary conditions. * The new edition also reflects the progress which had been made towards extending topological analysis to higher-dimensional systems by proposing a new formalism where evolving triangulations replace braids. * There has also been much progress in the understanding of what is a good representation of a chaotic system, and therefore a new chapter is devoted to embeddings. * The chapter on topological analysis program will be expanded to cover traditional measures of chaos. This will help to connect those readers who are familiar with those measures and tests to the more sophisticated methodologies discussed in detail in this book. * The addition of the Appendix with both frequently asked and open questions with answers gathers the most essential points readers should keep in mind and guides to corresponding sections in the book. This will be of great help to those who want to selectively dive into the book and its treatments rather than reading it cover to cover. What makes this book special is its attempt to classify real physical systems (e.g. lasers) using topological techniques applied to real date (e.g. time series). Hence it has become the experimenter?s guidebook to reliable and sophisticated studies of experimental data for comparison with candidate relevant theoretical models, inevitable to physicists, mathematicians, and engineers studying low-dimensional chaotic systems.

In control theory, sliding mode control (SMC) is a nonlinear control method that alters the dynamics of a nonlinear system by application of a discontinuous control signal that forces the system to slide along a cross-section of the system's normal behaviour. In recent years, SMC has been successfully applied to a wide variety of practical engineering systems including robot manipulators, aircraft, underwater vehicles, spacecraft, flexible space structures, electrical motors, power systems, and automotive engines. Sliding Mode Control of Uncertain Parameter-Switching Hybrid Systems addresses the increasing demand for developing SMC technologies and comprehensively presents the new, state-of-the-art sliding mode control methodologies for uncertain parameter-switching hybrid systems. It establishes a unified framework for SMC of Markovian jump singular systems and proposes new SMC methodologies based on the analysis results. The main aim of the book is to present new constructive methods of delay differential equation (DDE) theory and to give readers practical tools for analysis, control design and simulating of linear systems with delays. Referred to as “systems with delays” in this volume, this class of differential equations is also called delay differential equations (DDE), time-delay systems, hereditary systems, and functional differential equations. Delay differential equations are widely used for describing and modeling various processes and systems in different applied problems At present there are effective control and numerical methods and corresponding software for analysis and simulating different classes of ordinary differential equations (ODE) and partial differential equations (PDE). There are many applications for these types of equations, because of this progress, but there are not as many methodologies in systems with delays that are easily applicable for the engineer or applied mathematician. there are no methods of finding solutions in explicit forms, and there is an absence of generally available general-purpose software packages for simulating such systems. Systems with Delays fills this void and provides easily applicable methods for engineers, mathematicians, and scientists to work with delay differential equations in their operations and research.

Christoph Napierala Finance Equity Comparison of Health Systems

Master's Thesis from the year 2008 in the subject Health Science, grade: MPH, University of Zurich (Swiss School of Public Health), course: Master of Public Health, language: English, abstract: In numerous political and theoretical discussions the restrictions in performance and service of health care systems are a constant argument. The debate on limited health resource availability and fairness of distribution leads to economic arguments on scarcity of funds, and efficiency of financing. This paper focuses on the explanation of equity of resource distribution by focussing especially on financing health systems and how it affects equity in itself. It concentrates on an inter-country comparison emphasizing performance indicators, based on the WHR2000, and connecting them to health finance relevant numbers. Progressivity figures are used to highlight cross country equity differences. The analysis will provide evidence about the financing method mix' clusters and progressivity factor (Kakwani Index) influencing WHO DALE ranking. Regional and wealth perspectives are also looked at. Conclusively simple correlations can be observed for example between the Kakwani Index and the DALE ranks i.e. the more progressive a health care system is financed the better it is ranked. But also regarding financing mix' basic relationships can be found like social insurances leading to a better position contrary to the privately financed system mixes. Overall the protection of the poor...

Several applications involve a transient stream of data which has to be modeled and analyzed continuously. Their continuous arrival in multiple, rapid, time-varying and possibly unpredictable and unbounded way make the analysis difficult and opens fundamentally new research problems. Examples of such data intensive applications include stock market, road traffic analysis, whether forecasting systems etc. Data Stream Management Systems are specifically designed for handling continuous data streams. They can handle multiple, time-varying, unpredictable and unbounded streams which cannot be handled using traditional tools. In this work, we have used a Data Stream Management System- Stanford STREAM in three different application domain namely Road Traffic analysis, Habitat Monitoring analysis and Network Packet analysis. We have also used another DSMS, telegraphCQ, coupled with jamdroid, an open source road traffic analysis system, for mining road traffic data.

Yacov Haimes Y. Modeling and Managing Interdependent Complex Systems of Systems

A comprehensive guide to the theory, methodology, and development for modeling systems of systems Modeling and Managing Interdependent Complex Systems of Systems examines the complexity of, and the risk to, emergent interconnected and interdependent complex systems of systems in the natural and the constructed environment, and in its critical infrastructures. For systems modelers, this book focuses on what constitutes complexity and how to understand, model and manage it.Previous modeling methods for complex systems of systems were aimed at developing theory and methodologies for uncoupling the interdependencies and interconnections that characterize them. In this book, the author extends the above by utilizing public- and private- sector case studies; identifies, explores, and exploits the core of interdependencies; and seeks to understand their essence via the states of the system, and their dominant contributions to the complexity of systems of systems. The book proposes a reevaluation of fundamental and practical systems engineering and risk analysis concepts on complex systems of systems developed over the past 40 years. This important resource: Updates and streamlines systems engineering theory, methodology, and practice as applied to complex systems of systems Introduces modeling methodology inspired by philosophical and conceptual thinking from the arts and sciences Models the complexity of emergent interdependent and interconnected complex systems of systems by analyzing their shared states, decisions, resources, and decisionmakers Written for systems engineers, industrial engineers, managers, planners, academics and other professionals in engineering systems and the environment, this text is the resource for understanding the fundamental principles of modeling and managing complex systems of systems, and the risk thereto.

André Valente A corpus-based study on adjective use in 16th century prayers and letters

Seminar paper from the year 2009 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 1,3, University of Cologne, course: Corpus Linguistics: Studies and Exercises, language: English, abstract: At first sight, prayers and letters might appear to be completely different genres. In fact, they show similarities, which make them worth comparing. A typical feature of prayers and letters is "the high involvement of the addressor with the addressee and the fact that the addressor performs speech acts which directly aim at the addressee" (Kohnen forthcoming b: 5). One can say that the basic communicative setting in both genres is similar. This study will provide a corpus-based linguistic description and comparison of adjective use in prayers, private letters and official letters from the 16th century. Besides the analysis of the individual text types, there will be an analysis of different functional text sections within these three text types. The linguistic analysis will be on the level of morphology, semantics and syntax. The morphological analysis concentrates on the method and distribution of comparison. In the semantic analysis, the adjectives will be grouped into semantic categories and it will be looked at the distribution of these categories in different text sections. Concerning syntactic aspects, there are two aims. Firstly, it will be distinguished between attributive, predicative and postpositive adjectives. The second aim is to look at occ...
