Here is a book that takes the sting out of learning object-oriented design patterns! Using vignettes from the fictional world of Harry Potter, author Avinash C. Kak provides a refreshing alternative to the typically abstract and dry object-oriented design literature. Designing with Objects is unique. It explains design patterns using the short-story medium instead of sterile examples. It is the third volume in a trilogy by Avinash C. Kak, following Programming with Objects (Wiley, 2003) and Scripting with Objects (Wiley, 2008). Designing with Objects confronts how difficult it is for students to learn complex patterns based on conventional scenarios that they may not be able to relate to. In contrast, it shows that stories from the fictional world of Harry Potter provide highly relatable and engaging models. After explaining core notions in a pattern and its typical use in real-world applications, each chapter shows how a pattern can be mapped to a Harry Potter story. The next step is an explanation of the pattern through its Java implementation. The following patterns appear in three sections: Abstract Factory, Builder, Factory Method, Prototype, and Singleton; Adapter, Bridge, Composite, Decorator, Facade, Flyweight, and Proxy; and the Chain of Responsibility, Command, Interpreter, Iterator, Mediator, Memento, Observer, State, Strategy, Template Method, and Visitor. For readers’ use, Java code for each pattern is included in the book’s companion website. All code examples in the book are available for download on a companion website with resources for readers and instructors. A refreshing alternative to the abstract and dry explanations of the object-oriented design patterns in much of the existing literature on the subject. In 24 chapters, Designing with Objects explains well-known design patterns by relating them to stories from the fictional Harry Potter series

The study of long-term and short-term memory has a long tradition in psychology and led to the development of theories of cognition and memory. While many aspects of these two memory systems have been investigated in adults as well as children, the emergence and development of visual short-term memory has received relatively little attention in early childhood research. This book presents two studies that examined the storage capacity of visual short-term memory during early infancy as well as the type of information that is represented in this temporary store. Two storage hypotheses (object-based and feature-based) were tested for their ability to describe the nature of infants’ object representations. The discussion focuses on the observed developmental changes in the amount of information infants can hold in visual short-term memory and the suitability of the object-based and feature-based storage hypotheses in describing infants’ short-term object percepts. The present research should be of interest not only to researchers working with infants but also to those investigating visual short-term memory in adults and verbal children.

Whereas textual data retrieval history dates back to the beginning of library systems, multimedia information retrieval is relatively a new idea. Image retrieval research started with the form of Content Based Image Retrieval(CBIR); however, the progress encountered a bottleneck due to the semantic gap between visual features and conceptual semantics. The research question is: How can a machine semantically describe a picture? Answering this question might be a major breakthrough in image retrieval research. The basic areas of Computer Vision research that correlate image semantics are object recognition and object categorization. Both these fields require a general solution for detecting arbitrary objects, and automatic image annotation task requires a generalized object recognition framework and a methodology for annotation generation. The goal of this research is to use aspects of object recognition technologies for automatic automatic image annotation.

The existing system only focused on the management of the specific asset. In our country, there is only one web-based system for zakat management, whereas the other asset management like fidiah, waqaf and heritage only as a stand-alone system. This will lead to waste of time and effort for users where they have to go to various places to manage their assets. Personal Islamic Asset Management System using Object-oriented approach is a portal that integrates the personal management of Islamic assets which intend to solve all of aforementioned problems. It has detailed information about Islamic asset management including various functions for zakat, heritage, fidiah and kifayah. The Personal Islamic Asset Management System using object-oriented approach also provides the counter information and archived engine to search for related documents. This thesis contributes to the management of personal Islamic assets as well as using object-oriented software engineering.

Nathan R. Tallent Performance Analysis of Optimized Code

Modern applications frequently employ sophisticated object-oriented design. In these codes, deep loop nests are often spread across multiple routines. To achieve high performance, such codes rely on compilers to inline routines and optimize loops. Consequently, to effectively interpret performance, transformed loops must be understood in the calling context of transformed routines. *** To understand the performance of optimized object-oriented code, we describe how to analyze optimized object code and its debugging sections to recover its program structure and reconstruct a mapping back to its source code. Using this mapping, we combine the recovered static program structure with dynamic call path profiles to expose inlined frames and loop nests. Experiments show that performance visualizations based on this information provide unique insight into the performance of complex object-oriented codes written in C++. *** This work should be of interest to performance tools developers and, more broadly, application developers who care about performance. It is implemented in Rice University's HPCToolkit, a performance analysis toolkit.

Weifeng Xu Testing Aspect-Oriented Programs with State Models

The new constructs in aspect-oriented programming can cause hazards to quality assurance. To detect aspect defects, this book presents a state-based approach to systematic modeling and testing of aspects. We extend finite state machines with notations for specifying incremental modification aspects, integration aspects, and combination aspects. We compose aspect models with their base class models through an explicit weaving mechanism. We adapt the round-trip path testing of object-oriented programs to the generation of test sequences from woven-state models. An incremental testing process is exploited to determine whether failures, if revealed, have to do with aspects. We have conducted a series of experiments based on three applications. To further evaluate the fault-detection ability, we have created a significant number of mutants (or variation versions) by seeding one or more aspect variations (i.e., potential faults) and exploited multi-variation mutants to investigate the effect of interaction between aspect variations. Our experiments indicate that our model-based testing approach is highly effective in the detection of the seeded aspect faults.

Christina Deatcu Development of an Object-Orientated DEVS-Simulator with MATLAB.

Inhaltsangabe:Abstract: To solve problems of real world systems using scientific methods, the model-based approach is an effective and widely used method. To help rebuilding a system properly, there exist formalistic descriptions of systems‘ behavior. One of several system specification formalisms, the DEVS formalism and associated abstract simulator algorithms provide the bases of this work. The DEVS formalism offers ways to describe systems which change their state driven by events at discrete times. Several implementations for computer aided simulation based on the DEVS formalism and associated abstract simulator concepts using object-orientated programming languages exist. One of those implementations, the MatlabDEVS simulation runtime system was modified and improved during this project and MatlabDEVS2, a modified version was developed. To make improvement possible, a proper understanding of the fundamental theories is indispensable. Hence, they are exhibited as a part of this work. Because the modeler should be supported by the computer application while passing the process of modeling and simulation, the user interfaces are crucial for the quality of the system. The existing MatlabDEVS system did not offer any support for modeling and simulation, as well as it was not well documented. Object orientated programming within the MATLAB® programming environment results in a complicated file structure representing the classes. This fact cannot be influenced. Hence, a GUI for...

Master's Thesis from the year 2009 in the subject Business economics - Marketing, Corporate Communication, CRM, Market Research, Social Media, Sikkim Manipal University Bangalore (Manipal Institute of Technology), course: MBA , language: English, abstract: The SERVPERF and SERVQUAL are the two Service quality measurement instruments widely used in the measurement of service quality in various service sectors such as banking, hospitals, tourism, insurance etc. But the service quality literature indicates that there exists a significant difference in the philosophy of service quality measurement in these two metrics, and also, the results while these two metrics are used need not necessarily match. Hence, the problem identified in this research is: do these two metrics concur in their results, or is there a significant difference in their outcomes as applicable to a given service sector. The study also extends to the correlation between the outcomes of these two metrics and looking into the possibility of drawing implications based on the combined outcome. The research is partly qualitative and partly quantitative in nature. Qualitative in the sense that it analyses existing metrics of service quality based on meta-analysis and, through the use of secondary data, discusses the relative importance of both the metrics in service sectors. The research becomes quantitative, as it deals with descriptive statistics and tests various hypotheses using standard statistical tools. Kev...

Alexander Gepperth Neural Learning Methods for Visual Object Detection - Brain-like Principles for Environment Perception in Artificial Cognitive Systems

Visual object detection by artificial cognitive systems is currently a great research challenge, both at the theoretical as well as the technical level. On the one hand, a more fundamental understanding of the mechanisms employed by the human brain for this purpose is desired, and, on the other hand, important technical applications could be realized by successful visual object detection, particularly in the domain of intelligent vehicles. This book describes a number of methods, centered around artificial neural networks, that address important issues in the object detection/identification process. Each method is evaluated in a concrete application context, thus giving insights not only into theoretical aspects of the object detection process but also showing potential applicability in technical systems.

Jan Kirenz Linking Consumer Mindset Metrics to Consumer Behavior and Capital Market Valuation

With the growing recognition that customers are market-based assets, research on linking consumer mindset metrics to consumer behavior and market value has been gaining significance. Advocates of perceptual metrics argue that company actions move customers closer to buying decisions and that tracking and interpreting mindset metrics provide early evaluation signals of actual consumer purchase behavior and capital market valuation. This book deals with the impact of mindset metrics on consumer behavior and capital market valuation. The author develops a market share attraction model, which models the link between primary consumer mindset metrics and customer acquisition as well as customer repeat purchase behavior. As an empirical illustration, the proposed model is applied to the US automobile industry. Furthermore, using representative large-scale surveys of US and European consumers, the author investigates the association between perceptual brand measures and the capital markets' expectation of risk-adjusted future cash flows. The research findings indicate that perceptual metrics are important predictors of customer acquisition, customer retention and the market value of a firm. Hence, the results reported in this book help managers to quantify the return on intangible investments and offer a better understanding of the impact of mindset metrics on consumer buying behavior and market value.

Sebastian Kleinschmager Aspect-Oriented Programming Evaluated. A Study on the Impact That Aspect-Oriented Programming Can Have on Software Development Productivity

Aspect-oriented-programming is a relatively new technique that has evolved on top of the already well-established approach of object-oriented programming. When it is used correctly, it promises to remove many redundant parts of a code that appear repeatedly in an application, essentially untangling the original code. Thus, it can lead to a cleaner, more separated software design, to greater modularity and maintainability. Time-savings in software engineering can also be huge cost-savings, and anything that increases software quality is a welcome sight in an industry that in parts, still suffers from a bad reputation concerning the quality of its products. But, used in the wrong way or with insufficient knowledge, aspect-oriented programming can result in the opposite. Unintended side effects may introduce new bugs into an application, and therefore, it may be just one of the many negative consequences. In any case, there is a huge lack of empirical research on the subject, and in software engineering in general. Due to that fact, the question arises in how far hard facts can be drawn. This book deals with part of that problem by evaluating the aspect-oriented approach in a carefully designed and controlled experiment. On the basis of different tasks that were solved by participants of this study, the aspect-oriented approach (represented by AspectJ) is compared with a plain object-oriented approach (represented by Java). The book starts with an introduction to the topic, and f...

Hendrik Wilz Workload balancing capabilities of load based pull production control systems

Master's Thesis from the year 2017 in the subject Business economics - Supply, Production, Logistics, grade: 1,7, University of Groningen (Economics and Business), language: English, abstract: Pull systems can be simple but effective production control systems. However, most pull systems do not perform well with random processing times and have a limited applicability for the MTO sector. The systems do not achieve a decent reduction of total throughput times (TTT) or only under special conditions. The unsolved problem is how to design a load-based system that is able to perform well with random processing times. To overcome this problem a load-based pull system with an adapted release mechanism is proposed. Pull systems need to balance the workload effectively over the different routes and stations in order to reduce TTT. By prioritizing orders regarding their size, the adapted release mechanism balances the workload within the routes and between the different routes. A discrete event simulation with several sets of experiments was conducted to test this release mechanism in a load-based system and compare it to various other pull systems. The results show an improved performance of the proposed system compared to the other systems. The magnitude of this performance improvement strongly depends on the used ratio of large to small orders.

Java is an Object-Oriented Language. I believe that the Object-Oriented paradigm is extremely useful, but is very difficult to teach to beginning students. I also believe that there is a lot of benefit in understanding how to develop and debug good solid methods before we get into the additional complexities of the Object-Oriented paradigm. So there is a choice, we either teach our students multiple languages, or we find a way to teach them the basics of an object-oriented language, such as Java in a procedural fashion. A few things that I will stress in this book are:1. Good Coding habits. Writing code so that others can read it.2. Good Design habits.3. Testing your code while building it. I call this Write a little, Test a little.4. Project life cycle.I trust that this book will help in your understanding of Java and coding in general.

There is a great need in a series of applications to have a more refined description of these states, for instance, the amount of power generated by an electrical power generation system or the amount of gas that can be delivered through an offshore gas pipeline network. This book provides a descriptive account of various types of multistate system, bound-for multistate systems, probabilistic modeling of monitoring and maintenance of multistate systems with components along with examples of applications. Key Features: Looks at modern multistate reliability theory with applications covering a refined description of components and system states. Presents new research, such as Bayesian assessment of system availabilities and measures of component importance. Complements the methodological description with two substantial case studies. Reliability engineers and students involved in the field of reliability, applied mathematics and probability theory will benefit from this book.

A comprehensive guide to the modelling and design of solid oxide fuel cell hybrid power plants This book explores all technical aspects of solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) hybrid systems and proposes solutions to a range of technical problems that can arise from component integration. Following a general introduction to the state-of-the-art in SOFC hybrid systems, the authors focus on fuel cell technology, including the components required to operate with standard fuels. Micro-gas turbine (mGT) technology for hybrid systems is discussed, with special attention given to issues related to the coupling of SOFCs with mGTs. Throughout the book emphasis is placed on dynamic issues, including control systems used to avoid risk conditions. With an eye to mitigating the high costs and risks incurred with the building and use of prototype hybrid systems, the authors demonstrate a proven, economically feasible approach to obtaining important experimental results using simplified plants that simulate both generic and detailed system-level behaviour using emulators. Computational models and experimental plants are developed to support the analysis of SOFC hybrid systems, including models appropriate for design, development and performance analysis at both component and system levels. Presents models for a range of size units, technology variations, unit coupling dynamics and start-up and shutdown behaviours Focuses on SOFCs integration with mGTs in light of key constraints and risk avoidance issues under steady-state conditions and during transient operations Identifies interaction and coupling problems within the GT/SOFC environment, including exergy analysis and optimization Demonstrates an economical approach to obtaining important experimental results while avoiding high-cost components and risk conditions Presents analytical/computational and experimental tools for the efficient design and development of hardware and software systems Hybrid Systems Based on Solid Oxide Fuel Cells: Modelling and Design is a valuable resource for researchers and practicing engineers involved in fuel cell fundamentals, design and development. It is also an excellent reference for academic researchers and advanced-level students exploring fuel cell technology.

Stefan Luckhaus Cost Estimation in Agile Software Development

Whenever software is developed based on contracts with binding agreed conditions it is exposed to risks; conditions such as the delivery of a clearly defined functional scope at a fixed price and at an agreed delivery date. Many of these risks can be mitigated by the principles of agile development. Being able to navigate projects within all agreed parameters requires cost estimation methods to be integrated into planning and controlling processes. In order to prevent these methods from eroding the advantages of agile development, they must be rapidly applicable - ideally automatable - and allow for self-calibration after every sprint. This book illustrates, how size metrics can be utilised profitably in software development processes oriented towards agile values. It points out differences and restrictions, how the accuracy of cost estimations can be increased with each sprint and examines the feasibility of automated measurements.
