Whereas textual data retrieval history dates back to the beginning of library systems, multimedia information retrieval is relatively a new idea. Image retrieval research started with the form of Content Based Image Retrieval(CBIR); however, the progress encountered a bottleneck due to the semantic gap between visual features and conceptual semantics. The research question is: How can a machine semantically describe a picture? Answering this question might be a major breakthrough in image retrieval research. The basic areas of Computer Vision research that correlate image semantics are object recognition and object categorization. Both these fields require a general solution for detecting arbitrary objects, and automatic image annotation task requires a generalized object recognition framework and a methodology for annotation generation. The goal of this research is to use aspects of object recognition technologies for automatic automatic image annotation.

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2014 in the subject Electrotechnology, grade: 1,0, Technical University of Munich (Media Technology), language: English, abstract: Content-based image retrieval (CBIR) for location recognition allows more precise indoor navigation than state-of-the-art methods. Using range images and matching a query image to a dataset of geo-tagged images is current research. This thesis investigates the prospects of applying 3D Shape feature detectors and descriptors to a point cloud projection of the range image. Therefor at first the keypoint detection methods Normal Aligned Radial Feature (NARF), Intrinsic Shape Signatures (ISS) and HARRIS3D detector are described, followed by the shape feature descriptors Spin Images, Signatures of Histograms of Orientations (SHOT) and Unique Shape Context (USC). Special attention is paid to the parameters. Varying radii, border estimation methods, preset filters and computing times are analysed in order to determine, how to set those parameters to obtain good results. The results exhibit the shortcomings of the state-of-the-art 3D feature algorithms, in application of indoor navigation. Finally suggestions for improvement are made.

Multiview autostereoscopic displays (MADs) make it possible to view video content in 3D without wearing special glasses, and such displays have recently become available. The main problem of MADs is that they require several (typically 8 or 9) views, while most of the 3D video content is in stereoscopic 3D today. To bridge this content-display gap, the research community started to devise automatic multiview synthesis (MVS) methods. Common MVS methods are based on depth-image-based rendering, where a dense depth map of the scene is used to reproject the image to new viewpoints. Although physically correct, this approach requires accurate depth maps and additional inpainting steps. Our work uses an alternative conversion concept based on image domain warping (IDW) which has been successfully applied to related problems such as aspect ratio retargeting for streaming video, and dispa- rity remapping for depth adjustments in stereoscopic 3D content. IDW shows promising performance in this context as it only requires robust, sparse point- correspondences and no inpainting steps. However, MVS, using IDW as well as alternative approaches, is computationally demanding and requires realtime processing - yet such methods should be portable to end-user and even mobile devices to develop their full potential. To this end, this thesis investigates efficient algorithms and hardware architectures for a variety of subproblems arising in the MVS pipeline.

The book presents a 2D face recognition system using Markov random field matching methodology for establishing dense correspondences between a pair of images in the presence of pose changes and self-occlusion. The proposed method, which exploits both shape and texture differences between images, achieves very competitive performance compared to the current approaches. The algorithm bypasses the need for geometric pre-processing of face images. By virtue of the matching methodology embedded in the algorithm, the proposed approach can cope with moderate translation, in and out of plane rotation, scaling and perspective effects. Also by employing a graphical model based approach, the proposed system circumvents the need for non-frontal images being available for training a pose-invariant face recognition system. In contrast to the state-of-the-art approaches based on 3D models, the approach operates on 2D images and bypasses the need for 3D face training data and avoids the vagaries of 3D face model to 2D face image fitting.

A new embedded, block-based, wavelet transform coding algorithm of low complexity is developed for hyperspectral image compression: Three-Dimensional Set Partitioned Embedded bloCK (3D-SPECK). 3D-SPECK efficiently encodes 3D volumetric hyperspectral image data by exploiting the dependencies in all dimensions. It can generate either SNR scalable or resolution scalable embedded bitstreams. It can also generate ROI retrievable bitstreams.This book introduces 3D-SPECK and describes its technical details. It is demonstrated that 3D-SPECK has excellent performance on hyperspectral image compression.

The evidence for the link between media presentation and body image distortion is frequently reviewed by scholars; in particular, the degree of women's use of social comparison and automatic evaluation of body-related images in establishing their self-concept (Watts et al 352). Furthermore, the visual factor contributes to the popularity of magazines. As a result, the exposure of images of women's bodies is enormous. This widespread exposure influences women immensely. There is a bulk of research which demonstrates that media images of ideal female models have an impact on women's self-images and body image evaluation, and consequently leads to dissatisfaction and perceptual distortion. All in all, I would like to argue that media perpetuates the discourse of beauty based on body image and self-representation. Even though such factors as clothing or dieting may seem to be of minor importance, I would like to show how the two aforementioned subjects can reach the audience, and in doing so fulfill the magazine's mission of spreading ideology and increasing sales.

In this context, two main problems occur when attempting to design a handwritten digit string recognition system. The first problem is the link between adjacent digits, which can be naturally spaced, overlapped or/and connected. The second problem is the unknown length of the digit string, which is not carefully written by people in real-life situations.In this thesis, SVM-based segmentation-verification system for segmenting two connected handwritten digits using the oriented sliding window is proposed. It employs a segmentation-verification system using conjointly the oriented sliding window and Support Vector Machine (SVM) classifiers. Experimental results showed that the proposed system is more appropriate for segmenting simple and multiple connections. Its main advantage lays in the use few rules for finding the optimal segmentation path. Hence, the proposed approach constitutes a tradeoff between the correct segmentation and the number of the segmentation cuts.
