Thesis (M.A.) from the year 2011 in the subject Interpreting / Translating , grade: A, University of Gdansk (Institute of English), course: Translation studies, language: English, abstract: Humour translation is an extremely difficult process which causes translators many problems. Rendering humour into a different language becomes even more complicated when the translator translates film dialogues for the purpose of dubbing or subtitling. The aim of this thesis is to analyse translation strategies and techniques applied in the process of humour translation in dubbing and subtitling. The analysis is based on two animated films: Shrek 2 and Ice Age. In the thesis the original version of film dialogues is compared with its dubbed and subtitled versions in Polish. The material for the study comes from DVD releases. The thesis is divided into two chapters. In the first chapter the concept of humour is explained and humour translation is described. In this chapter I also provide definitions of translation strategy and translation technique, explain the difference between these two concepts and describe possible translation strategies and techniques in humour translation. In the second part of the first chapter the specificity of audiovisual translation is discussed, and subtitling and dubbing are described as two different translation methods. The second chapter offers a comparison between the Polish dubbed and subtitled dialogue versions. In this chapter I describe translation str...

Xiaoqin Lin On Cross-Culture Translation Strategies

Inspired by widespread convergent phenomena, this book attempts to study translation from the perspective of global convergence. With concrete examples of both linguistic and cultural convergence, the interdependent relationships respectively between language and culture and between translation and convergence are explored as prerequisites for elaborating on the focal theme. Then, based on an irresistible tendency of convergence and worldwide linguistic and cultural crises, the book goes a step further to focus on analyzing proper cross-culture translation strategies by putting forward relevant translation principles and detailed translation techniques with vivid examples. For better understanding and further reference, major factors influencing the choice of translation strategies are illustrated and the translator is suggested to make a cautious and comprehensive decision of the most practical approach. The research should be especially useful to those who are interested or engaged in translation studies.

Emily Apter The Translation Zone. A New Comparative Literature

Translation, before 9/11, was deemed primarily an instrument of international relations, business, education, and culture. Today it seems, more than ever, a matter of war and peace. In The Translation Zone, Emily Apter argues that the field of translation studies, habitually confined to a framework of linguistic fidelity to an original, is ripe for expansion as the basis for a new comparative literature. Organized around a series of propositions that range from the idea that nothing is translatable to the idea that everything is translatable, The Translation Zone examines the vital role of translation studies in the "invention" of comparative literature as a discipline. Apter emphasizes "language wars" (including the role of mistranslation in the art of war), linguistic incommensurability in translation studies, the tension between textual and cultural translation, the role of translation in shaping a global literary canon, the resistance to Anglophone dominance, and the impact of translation technologies on the very notion of how translation is defined. The book speaks to a range of disciplines and spans the globe. Ultimately, The Translation Zone maintains that a new comparative literature must take stock of the political impact of translation technologies on the definition of foreign or symbolic languages in the humanities, while recognizing the complexity of language politics in a world at once more monolingual and more multilingual.

Burton Raffel The Art of Translating Poetry

This book by a well-known translator and critic is divided into two parts, the first dealing with the linguistic and other more technical aspects of translating poetry, the second involved with more practice-oriented matters. The chapters in Part One examine the specific constraints of language and the unavoidable linguistic bases of translation; the constraints of specific languages; forms and genres; and prosody and comparative prosody. Part Two looks at the subjective element in translation; collaborative translation; the translation of oral poetry; and the translator's responsibility.Languages discussed include Indonesian, Japanese, Chinese, Old and Middle English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Persian, Russian, Latin, and Greek. The book argues, inter alia, that literal translation is impossible; that no translation can fully create the original but that good literary translation can create a usable approximation; that translation is secondary not only to the original work being translated but also to the linguistic (and literary) nature of the language being translated into; that the literary translator's primary responsibility is to the work he is translating; that there is nothing ever definitive about any translation; that the poetry translator must be a poet and poems should not be translated into prose; and that there must be a subjective identification between translator and translated work. This is the first attempt to systematize linguistic informatio...

Faced with differences in the extra linguistic reality of the two cultures or its lexical mapping, the translator tries to reconcile them by relying on the following procedures: borrowing, definition, literal translation, substitution, lexical creation, omission, and addition etc. This book will move on now to discuss the various ways translators of the Holy Quran can deal with structural and lexical differences between the two languages English and Arabic. It will deal almost exclusively with contemporary translation procedures and strategies.

Therefore, the book carries out the important and crucial task to prepare and provide students, researchers and translators with a book which deals with the translation of many different kind of English and Arabic texts. The layout of the material in this book is an outcome of the author's interest in translation which originates from his time as a student at Sudan University of Science of Technology. The practice texts provide vehicles for assignments and homework. The texts can be translated into English and vice versa and can be compared with the other versions then. Last but not least, this book is a way into the fascinating world of linguistics and translation.

Hovhannisyan Mariam Translation and Literary Analysis

The role of translation is central in the literary polysystem. Without translation literatures could not be experienced outside their usual areas of language use. Without criticism literatures could not build up traditions that help to preserve and disseminate them. The following connections lie between them: 1.They both have important roles in the literary polysystem 2.Both translation and literary criticism characterize literatures from different angles. 3.Both of them serve to find out the merits and values of literary works and provide much distribution for the work. So, they are as if the afterlife of literary works. 4.Translation like literary criticism is based on individual experience and worldview, etc. of the translator/ critic and hence it is difficult to assess them. 5.Translation analysis is one type of literary analysis, because •Translation has been and is a value of a literary work. The more it is translated, the more valuable it is. •Any complete review of this or that work of art includes its (un)translatability. •The stages of translation analysis are the same for the literary criticism. There is much compatibility between them that needs much study.

Zare Zahra Loss and Compensation in Translation of Idioms

Translating prose fiction requires special considerations in terms of style. Preserving text style and features contributing to its uniqueness is elemental in prose fiction translation. This study addresses the use of idioms as a stylistic feature and the way they are translated in prose fiction. Idioms symbolize the dissimilarities among various languages and different cultures. They are usually exclusive to a particular language and specific to a single culture. This peculiarity makes them a thorny issue for translators. The present research is an attempt to investigate English translation of Persian idioms in a novel, Symphony of the Dead. It examines the procedures utilized for translation of idioms, probable losses and compensation of them. There exists adequate amount of research on translation of idioms, yet there hardly exists any research which has included loss and compensation in translation of idioms in its analysis. The findings may be useful for translators who are interested in translating literary texts especially fiction. It may also have something to offer for those scholars who are interested in literature and culture and those who choose to work on linguistics.

It will display history of MT and will deal with some of the major issues in the realisation of MT like the difficulty of translating prepositions or integrating semantics, as well as the importance of real world knowledge. To illustrate these difficulties with examples on a basic level, a practice test with a moderately complex translation engine provided by Google has been carried out and will be explained. Finally, I am going to introduce three of the largest and most powerful translation machines currently in use. I will also give a brief over-view of methods of MT. The aim of this paper is to show that the realisation of the primal idea of machine translation in its original sense, which was to perform translation without human intervention (except during the construction phase of the system), is still markedly far away at present and machines are still unlikely to take over the jobs of human translators.

We pose the question whether it is primarily the size of your training corpus that determines the quality of translation or if there are other ways that can boost the quality of the translated text as well. What is the best approach to deal with morphologically rich languages? How important is the genre of the text? We use tools like Moses, MGIZA, SRILM and perform empirical analyses to answer these questions.

Peter Otieno Resa Translation of Neologisms

This book is about evaluation of Translation of Lexis in Dholuo Radio Broadcasts in East Africa with specific reference to an assessment of Neologisms and Technical Terminologies as they are translated by Kenya's Dholuo Radio Presenters. Neologisms and technical lexis are words, which were not initially part of Dholuo lexicon; however, they have come into use as a result of technological advancements, scientific inventions and socioeconomic interactions. The work evaluates some of the neologisms and technical lexis likely to be mistranslated or misrepresented. It assesses mistranslation, misrepresentation and meaning-loss in the process of translation of these lexical items. It also appraises effective communication of radio presenters in interpretation and translation of Neologisms.

Translating Boundaries. Constraints, Limits, Opportunities

Translation Studies have traditionally been known to be interdisciplinary. What better term to sum this up than boundaries? A term that means different things in different fields and can be applied to a multitude of topics. Political, personal, symbolic, or professional boundaries, boundaries of the mind as found in psychology, or boundaries in the sociological sense where they separate different fields of knowledge. From politics to geography, boundaries are everywhere. They need to be identified, drawn, or overcome-depending on circumstances and context. What are the boundaries translators and interpreters have to deal with? How do they relate to Translation Studies in general? Boundaries and translation go hand in hand. As the discipline grows and ever more elements of interdisciplinarity come into play, the more the question of what the boundaries of translation are needs to be asked. Some of the research topics presented in this collection may well extend the boundaries of the discipline itself, while others may look at the constraints and limits under which translators and translations operate, or showcase the role translation and interpreting play in overcoming social or political boundaries. It is with this in mind that the group of young researchers presented in this book has come together to create an overview of current research in Translation Studies. The papers offer insights into the state of the discipline in various nations, often touching on under-researched t...

A. K. Aruna Patanjali Yoga Sutras. Translation and Commentary in the Light of Vedanta Scripture

Patanjali Yoga Sutras: Translation and Commentary in the Light of Vedanta Scripture is truly ground breaking, a unique perspective on these sutras that is both new and ancient.Aruna returns the gems of Patanjali from being limited within one of the six philosophical schools of medieval India to their universal fountainhead in the ancient scriptures of India. In the light of Vedanta scriptures they shine with a luster rarely seen since their inception over two thousand years ago.Connecting these sutras to hundreds of Veda and Vedanta mantras and the verses of the Bhagavad Gita, this modern translation and brilliant commentary succeeds in speaking directly to the listener's heart, not the sectarian head. Aruna lovingly treats these jewels as reflecting the freedom we all seek in life, not as historical artifacts of mystical curiosity. The sutras are in Sanskrit and transliteration, with English word-for-word and translation plus a rich, detailed commentary. Aruna's authoritative commentary brings in the connections of the sutras with the India sacred scriptures. This has never been attempted before in translation and reveals the universal application of these sutras to all Indians and to all students of all schools of yoga throughout the world.A must read for every student and teacher of yoga who yearns for rekindling the spiritual brilliance lying within the ethical and meditative practices of yoga.

Project Report from the year 2016 in the subject Interpreting / Translating , grade: 9, , language: English, abstract: Researchers in translation are most of the time quality conscious and aspire to determine the accuracy of the transferred text. They perceive back-translation as a reliable quality assurance mechanism. However, some specialists maintain that back-translation is not an efficient quality control mechanism. It is, therefore, the purpose of this paper to determine whether back-translation is a reliable quality assessing instrument between the source text and the target one. The researcher applies a hermeneutic phenomenological investigating method within the qualitative paradigm to amplify the findings in this study.

Berenice Walther Difficulties in Translating Legal Terms

Thesis (M.A.) from the year 2008 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Other, grade: 2, University of Münster (Arbeitsbereich Sprachwissenschaft), course: Dialogue Studies, language: English, abstract: In this paper, the major aspects of and essential developments in translation theory, including the ever-recurring question of what constitutes a good translation, will be explored and the particularity of legal translation will be discussed. In the translation of national law terms, many facets have to be kept in mind. For example, the mastering of the different languages poses problems as does the relation of legal texts to different and specific legal systems and cultures. The focus will then switch to legal language in particular. The opposition between word meaning of everyday language and the word meaning of languages for specific purposes will be clarified. Then, particular difficulties in legal language and translation with consideration of the different legal systems where these translations are used will be illustrated with respect to the nature of legal discourse, its dependence on the legal system and the presentation of possible ambiguities and their interpretation. The problem of a common legislation in the European Union is one of finding a legal terminology that is not influenced by its cultural environment - an entirely impossible enterprise.

Alkım Emel, ÇEBİ Yalçın Text Conversion System Between Turkic Dialects

Turkic communities come from a common culture; however the interaction with other communities over years caused diversion especially in written language. A system which can automatically translate documents written in different Turkic languages will be an important step towards eliminating the disunity of Turkic communities on written work of art over past ninety years and obtaining fusion of Turkic communities. In this book, a rule-based and semi-supervised machine translation system "MT-Turk", which is designed for closely related Turkic languages and implemented on Turkish, Kirghiz and Kazan Tatar, is presented. MT-Turk is an extensible bidirectional translation infrastructure in which new Turkic dialects can be added by just adding the lexicon of roots/stems, suffixes, and the rules. Furthermore, it is open to extension by suggestion. In order to form a multilingual machine translation infrastructure, two subsets of rule-based approach, the interlingual machine translation approach and transfer-based approach were used in combination to achieve extensibility and interoperability. The book also includes evaluation of the translation process using both BLEU and NIST metrics.

Aslan Bahattin Translating Experimental Literature

Experimental literary works enable fertile translation discussions due to their rich and observable stylistic peculiarities. Such works provide rich material to revisit the relation between the concepts of style and visibility in translation. As an experimental novel Burroughs' The Soft Machine, written in the "cut-up" technique, forces the translator to face new challenges and outstandingly exhibits a potential for the discussions concerning the style and visibility of the translator. The present study aims to find out how and to what extend the stylistic differentiation of the target and the source texts contributes to the visibility of the translator. Though the visibility issue has long been discussed by the translators and translation scholars, what makes this piece interesting is that probably for the first time the visibility issue is discussed within the general framework of experimental literature. The findings of the study suggest that, in the context of the translation of experimental literature, the correlation between the translation strategies adopted by the translator and the resulting visibility of the translator may fall short of the conventional expectations.

Combining education and computer games is a trending topic within the academic and the commercial world. One of the main problems of educational games is that they are generally not considered fun. This book will explore the possibilities of marrying fun and education and more specifically, how commercially viable computer games can be used as a new medium of translation for chivalric literature in an educative manner. The topic is approached from a motivational and experiential point of view with an analysis of game play, an exploration of various computer game types fit for storytelling and the promises they offer in educative value. The last part of this work contains a case study on a single-player game and a piece of Arthurian literature. Although this is not a complete translation of the story, it will offer insight on the possibilities of translation.

Šebesta Daniel Native-speaker status in the translation services market

This study combines linguistic and economic points of view to deliver insights into two national translation services markets. In this industry, largely unregulated by government bodies, translation agencies have the potential to act as quality warrantors by applying elaborate quality-assurance procedures and requiring their freelance translators to possess certain qualifications. A controversial yet widely mentioned qualification is being a native speaker of a specific language. Drawing on a critique of the conventional "native speaker" concept and on insights from economics, Language Management Theory and critical discourse analysis, this study investigates how the native-speaker status, along with other translator qualifications, is used as an argument for higher quality and a higher price in marketing and price-setting strategies of translation agencies in the Czech Republic and Germany when it comes to a technical translation into a non-local language.
