By 1960, psychology had come to be dominated by behaviorism and learning theory, which emphasized the observable stimulus and response components of human and animal behavior while ignoring the cognitive processes that mediate the relationship between the stimulus and response. The cognitive phenomena occurring within the "black box" between stimulus and response were of little interest to behaviorists, as their mathematical models worked without them. In 1960, the book "Plans and the Structure of Behavior," authored by George A. Miller, Eugene Galanter, and Karl H. Pribram, was published. In this volume, Miller and his colleagues sought to unify the behaviorists' learning theory with a cognitive model of learned behavior. Whereas the behaviorists suggested that a simple reflex arc underlies the acquisition of the stimulus-response relationship, Miller and his colleagues proposed that "some mediating organization of experience is necessary" somewhere between the stimulus and response, in effect a cognitive process which must include monitoring devices that control the acquisition of the stimulus-response relationship. They named this fundamental unit of behavior the T.O.T.E. for "Test - Operate - Test - Exit".

In behavioural terms, to remember a stimulus is to respond to that stimulus at a later time. Remembering can thus be seen as discriminative behaviour along the stimulus dimension of time. This implies that phenomena such as stimulus generalisation, which have been shown to occur in discrimination learning along many other stimulus dimensions, may occur also in discrimination along the stimulus dimension of time, i.e. in remembering. Data from operant studies with pigeons and hens have supported this. This book reports a highly novel finding, namely the first evidence for the occurrence of peak shift in a remembering process. When hens were poorly rewarded for correct remembering after a short delay, but richly rewarded for correct remembering after a longer delay, they remembered best after an even longer delay. This phenomenon was not predicted by any traditional theory of memory, and cannot be explained by the century-old standard construct of memory trace decay. This work will interest a wide range of researchers in psychology, cognitive neuroscience, biology, or anyone interested in challenging their thinking with a radically different view of the nature of memory.

Anhand eines Experiments haben wir den Effekt von Rot auf die Attraktivitätsbeurteilung und das annähernde Verhalten männlicher Personen im Bezug auf eine Frau untersucht. 89 männliche, studentische Versuchspersonen bewerteten eine im roten versus blauen versus orange farbigen Oberteil gekleidete Frau auf einem Poster nach ihrer generellen und physischen Attraktivität. Zudem wurden behaviorale Intentionen im Bezug auf den Stimulus und das Gefühl, sich von ihm angezogen zu fühlen, abgefragt. Anhand der Distanz zwischen Teilnehmern und Stimulus wurde Annäherungsverhalten überprüft. Die Attraktivitätsbeurteilung der Frau fiel nicht signifikant positiver aus und die Personen näherten sich ihr nicht verstärkt an, wenn sie in Rot im Vergleich zu blau oder orange zu sehen war. Diese Ergebnisse lassen an der Existenz und der Wirkung des Rot-Effekts zweifeln und rufen zu weiterer Forschung auf.

Inhaltsangabe:Abstract: This thesis provides evidence that companies showing stronger corporate governance performance are on average also valued higher in terms of Tobin’s q. This evidence is found using a dataset of 242 of Europe’s largest corporations listed in the FTSE Eurotop 300 index. For each of these corporations, a dataset of over 300 corporate governance rating variables is analysed to establish a detailed overview of a firm’s corporate governance performance. These 300 rating variables result out of a corporate governance standard established by an independent rating agency in cooperation with the largest European institutional investors and in reference to the respective national corporate governance codes of the companies in the sample. The final regression model containing independent score components for Corporate Governance performance and financial performance proxied by ROA represents an R square adjusted of 42 per cent, thereby making the model and the inherent coefficients highly representative. The coefficient of the corporate governance score component suggests that, ceteris paribus, a one point increase in the value of the score component leads on average to a 0.3 point increase in Tobin’s q. The statistical findings are tested in depth for their practical validity in the subsequent Interview with the DWS Investment Group. For the purpose of this thesis the phenomenon of value is explained as sustainable long-term profit for investors. Secondly, the problems of shareholder value as a principle of corporate governance is examined and it is shown that the main issue in this context is the lack of mutual trust between interest groups within corporations and the moral dilemma resulting from this.Thereafter by comparing corporate culture in different countries it is demonstrated that the German approach in corporate culture is the most convenient in order to create mutual trust.
