The development of species-specific protocol of cryopreservation is essential, because rapid variations in eco-physiological conditions of fishes have imparted species-specific variations in metabolic pattern of sperm activity during evolution. Cryopreservation of fish sperm is a valuable method for restoration of endangered species as well as serving as complementary technique of reproductive manipulation for genetic improvement. In the cryopreservation of sperm, exposure to cryoprotectant prior to freezing is an important factor for many species. Therefore, the present study was conducted to develop an optimal freezing rate in the cryopreservation protocol of red tilapia fish sperm. The results obtained from the present study showed that the main factors that influenced the quality of sperm used in cryopreservation were molarity of glycerol in extender, equilibration time, vapour temperature and individual fish. However, in an attempt to develop an efficient and routine cryopreservation technique of fish sperm, more research needs to be conducted.

The AI is a common practice in domestic animals, but the use of frozen semen compromises the fertility of goat spermatozoa based on pregnancy rates from AI. This could be due to a poor resistant of goat spermatozoa to cryopreservation stresses compared to sperm from other domesticated mammals, notably bulls. Despite many hypotheses, the reason for decreased sperm fertility during in vitro storage remains unclear. Evidence is accumulating towards the lipid peroxidation LPO which may limit the success in this species. It has been reported that the inclusion of antioxidants in the cryopreservation media improved the quality of semen against LPO. Thus there is a need to improve the current techniques for processing, cooling, packaging and freezing semen with the use of antioxidants. This may reduce the oxidative stress and enhance the viability and fertility of goat spermatozoa.

Integrated Chicken-fish farming (ICFF) is a type of animal-fish farming and is a low cost system of fish production that involves the combination of chicken farming with fish culture. However, its practice entails the risk of transfer of pathogens to humans through the consumption of fish grown with chicken manure. In addition, heavy metal deposition into the fish receptacle through manure and spilled chicken feed may lead to metal concentrations in excess of permissible limits. This work assesses the effect of chicken wastes (manure and spilled feed) on the physico-chemical parameters and heavy metal concentrations in a chicken-fish system with the goal of determining the best combination ratio for laying chicken and fish under direct fertilization. The study recommends a combination ratio of 3,000 laying chickens and 80,000 fingerlings per 1 hectare fish pond for a vertically integrated chicken-fish system. Metal concentrations in the muscles of the two fish species used for the study (Oreochromis niloticus and Clarias gariepinus) were below FAO limits and the consumption of fish muscle from such systems operating within the combination ratio and culture period used for the study

They are the most abundant ectoprasitic flukes of fish, with greater diversity of species occurring in tropics than in the temperate regions of the world. They spend their entire life cycle as parasites on gills and skin of fish, hold to the fish by the use of hooks and attachment organs at the posterior end.This study investigates the prevalence of these parasites infecting some of the economically important fresh water fish from the River Nile at Qena province, Egypt. This is followed by detailed description by means of light microscopy of the recorded parasite species including a detailed description of the different parts of the recovered worms.

Resources use is one area of concern in fish culture. The study assessed input/output data of 5 fish farms and 8 hatcheries using life cycle analysis comparing CO2 emissions (CO2e/kg fish), energy consumption (MJ/kg fish) and water use (L/kg fish) in fish production within farms and against published data for chicken, beef and pork. Results of CO2 emissions and energy consumption of 5 fish farms showed Cobia cage farm highest at 8 kg CO2e/kg fish and 123 MJ/kg fish while Asian sea bass recirculation aquaculture systems (RAS) farm lowest at 1.7 kg CO2e/kg fish and 21 MJ/kg fish. High CO2 emissions and energy intake of Cobia farm were attributed to feed delivery from a distance of 5,600 km. Feed to Asian sea bass farm came from 880 km. Feed sourcing was a factor for CO2 emissions and energy use. Among three RAS farms, tilapia had the highest water use at 403 L/kg and Sea bream the lowest at 39 L/kg. Study findings comparing fish with chicken, beef and pork on CO2 emissions showed chicken with the lowest trailed by pork. Fish and chicken were more energy efficient than pork and beef. Fish was more water efficient than chicken and pork. Beef used 140 times more water than fish.

The study was conducted on seasonal variation, market and marketing system of framed fishes in Camilla sader that is Rannir bazaar and station bazaar fish market, Comilla. This paper is focused to examine the existing farm fish market, marketing system, economic features of marketing activities and inefficiencies. The study observed infrastructure facilities present market structure,price variations and the factor influence the marketing system. The study was based on fish market place visit, data collection, interviews of all stakeholders associated with trade and supplies.18 species of cultured fishes from 8 families were found during the survey period of 7 months (May to November 2012). In fish marketing system of Rannir bazaar and station bazaar, Comilla, it was found that a number of intermediaries were involved in trading fish. The supply chain of fish from farm owner to consumers passes through a number of intermediaries: middleman wholesalers and retailers.A number of constraints for fish marketing were reported by retailers during survey.Therefore, in depth long term investigation of fish market is needed for future planning for a steady supply of fish to masses.

Research on semen preservation has a history dating back over two centuries. Although much work has been done within the last forty years, only incremental improvements in techniques used to cryopreserve spermatozoa have been made. Because frozen bovine spermatozoa are used routinely for artificial insemination (Al) of virtually al1 dairy cows in most agriculturally advanced countries, there is a general misconception that the procedures used to cryopreserve bovine spermatozoa are successful and highly efficient. This is an overly optimistic view of sperm cryopreservation, since there remain several problems with these procedures. One problem well recognized in the Al industry is that there are significant differences among bulls with respect to the sensitivity of their spermatozoa to cryopreservation. With increasing international competition in the dairy industry, this and other limitations of current methods of sperm cryopreservation are no longer economically acceptable. Unfortunately, is limited, and the our current knowledge regarding the nature of cryoinjury unusual morphology and physiology of spermatozoa make them a particularly difficult cell to investigate.

The objective of the study was to estimate the occurrence and distribution of important Garm-negative bacteria from the kidney and intestine of fish, their aquatic environment and carcasses of filleted fish in Lake Tana, Ethiopia. From a total of 510 swabs taken from the kidney and intestine of 255 apparently healthy fish, different bacterial species, which belong to the family Aeromonadaceae, Vibrionaceae and Enterobacteriaceae were bacteriologically isolated and identified. Out of 62 water samples, 47 (75.8%) were positive for Aeromonadeceae and Enterobacteriaceae. Therefore from the results obtained it was concluded that the Isolation of similar types of bacteria from the fish, filleted fish and their aquatic environment has been recorded during the study period. The detection of similar bacterial species both in the fish and the water samples has some implications on the relationship between the fish and their aquatic environment. Furthermore, the recovery of various organisms, which are potentially pathogenic to humans, in the fish alimentary tract suggest that fish either improperly handled, undercooked or consumed raw may cause various diseases to susceptible individuals.

Survival of several species, along with preservation of the genetic pool is only viable if we can guarantee its conservation throughout time. Canine semen cryopreservation consists on chilling and freezing techniques. Dog semen possesses certain resilience to chilling procedures, which cannot assure long-term gamete preservation. Freezing methods induce a decrease of quality. To overcome this, several extenders to protect spermatozoa have been studied and methods were developed to evaluate both quality and induced damage to the sperm cell by cryopreservation. Yet, it is still difficult to differentiate objectively “good” from “bad” freezers, when both were selected from start as adequate for freezing. In daily practice setting thresholds is often challenging, especially when defining the minimum values to accept semen for freezing. The main objective of this work was to study cold treatment induced alterations in the sperm cell, using conventional semen analysis, along with computerized analysis. A molecular protein study was also conducted, once molecular markers may provide an increase value in the study of the intrinsic mechanisms of canine sperm sensitivity to cryopreservation.

SPATIAL PRICE EQUILIBRIUM AND FISH MARKET INTEGRATION IN NIGERIA

This study examined the extent and type of spatial market integration in fish marketing in Nigeria. It used private traders'' monthly retail prices in spatially separated markets. The empirical analysis revealed the markets that recorded the highest mean monthly prices. Variability index showed that fish prices fluctuated widely. The price of a kilogramme of dry fish compared with same weight of fresh fish revealed that cost of marketing functions and marketing margins were high. Both fresh and dry fish markets exhibited strong price consonance. The long-run market integration model revealed that 40.90% and 59.09% of fresh and dry fish market pairs had prices which were cointegrated. Evidence of price leadership in fresh fish price formation and transmission occurred in Kano, Bauchi, and Makurdi ( < 0.05). In dry fish marketing, Kano, Akure and Makurdi were the price leaders. Fresh fish markets were less competitive and less efficient compared with dry fish markets. It is recommended that government improves fish price information dissemination through decisive policies and programmes.

Economic aspects of parasitic effects on fishes are mass mortality, weight losses, reduction in fish population and size of catches. Fish disease due to helminth parasites has an indirect and direct effect on the productivity of fish and on human health. The main aim of present work is to provide knowledge about the seasonal variation, intensity of parasitic infection, effect of length and sex on the infestation rate as well as parasitic communities found in this selected species. Overall our result does provide some support of epidemiological predictions. The larger the fish population, the more parasitic species occurs in different organs of the fish. The parasitic community was varied during the whole period of investigation. The differences in parasitic infestation were probably included the interaction of complex and often obscure ecological and physiological mechanism. This information is an important addition to the scientific literature and useful for parasitologists and fish pathologists.

Integrated Chicken-fish farming (ICFF) is a type of animal-fish farming and is a low cost system of fish production that involves the combination of chicken farming with fish culture. However, its practice entails the risk of transfer of pathogens to humans through the consumption of fish grown with chicken manure. In addition, heavy metal deposition into the fish receptacle through manure and spilled chicken feed may lead to metal concentrations in excess of permissible limits. This work assesses the effect of chicken wastes (manure and spilled feed) on the physico-chemical parameters and heavy metal concentrations in a chicken-fish system with the goal of determining the best combination ratio for laying chicken and fish under direct fertilization. The study recommends a combination ratio of 3,000 laying chickens and 80,000 fingerlings per 1 hectare fish pond for a vertically integrated chicken-fish system. Metal concentrations in the muscles of the two fish species used for the study (Oreochromis niloticus and Clarias gariepinus) were below FAO limits and the consumption of fish muscle from such systems operating within the combination ratio and culture period used for the study
