The idea that respect for cultural diversity conflicts with gender equality is now a staple of both public and academic debate. Yet discussion of these tensions is marred by exaggerated talk of cultural difference, leading to ethnic reductionism, cultural stereotyping, and a hierarchy of traditional and modern. In this volume, Anne Phillips firmly rejects the notion that ‘culture’ might justify the oppression of women, but also queries the stereotypical binaries that have represented people from ethnocultural minorities as peculiarly resistant to gender equality. The questions addressed include the relationship between universalism and cultural relativism, how to distinguish valid generalisation from either gender or cultural essentialism, and how to recognise women as agents rather than captives of culture. The discussions are illuminated by reference to legal cases and policy interventions, with a particular focus on forced marriage and cultural defence.

The Anthropology of Moralities The Anthropology of Moralities Новинка

The Anthropology of Moralities

Anthropologists have been keenly aware of the tension between cultural relativism and absolute norms, and nowhere has this been more acute than with regards to moral values. Can we study the Other's morality without applying our own normative judgments? How do social anthropologists keep both the distance required by science and the empathy required for the analysis of lived experiences? The plurality of moralities has not received an explicit and focused attention until recently, when accelerated globalization often resulted in the collision of different value systems. Observing, describing and assessing values cross-culturally, the authors propose various methodological approaches to the study of moralities, illustrated with rich ethnographic accounts, thus offering a valuable guide for students of anthropology, sociology and cultural studies and for professionals concerned with the empirical and cross-cultural study of values.

The problem of value pluralism permeates modern political philosophy. Its presence can be felt even when it is not explicitly the central topic under investigation. Political thinkers such as Max Weber, Isaiah Berlin and Stuart Hampshire derive pessimistic, sometimes tragic, conclusions from their reflections upon pluralism. On the other hand, there is a more optimistic view represented by John Rawls and Jürgen Habermas that sees value pluralism as a problem that is easier to live with. This book presents the first accessible overview for both post- and undergraduate students of the way in which this problem has been understood and responded to by modern political thinkers.

Lives in Translation: Sikh Youth as British Citizens

In "Lives in Translation", Kathleen Hall investigates the cultural politics of immigration and citizenship, education and identity-formation among Sikh youth whose parents migrated to England from India and East Africa. Legally British, these young people encounter race as a barrier to becoming truly "English." Hall breaks with conventional ethnographies about immigrant groups by placing this paradox of modern citizenship at the center of her study, considering Sikh immigration within a broader analysis of the making of a multiracial postcolonial British nation. The postwar British public sphere has been a contested terrain on which the politics of cultural pluralism and of social incorporation have configured the possibilities and the limitations of citizenship and national belonging. Hall's rich ethnographic account directs attention to the shifting fields of power and cultural politics in the public sphere, where collective identities, social statuses, and cultural subjectivities are produced in law and policy, education and the media, as well as in families, peer groups, ethnic networks, and religious organizations. Hall uses a blend of interviews, fieldwork, and archival research to challenge the assimilationist narrative of the traditional immigration myth, demonstrating how migrant people come to know themselves and others through contradictory experiences of social conflict and solidarity across different social fields within the public sphere. "Lives in Translation" ...

Randi Gressgard Multicultural Dialogue. Dilemmas, Paradoxes, Conflicts

As cross-cultural migration increases democratic states face a particular challenge: how to grant equal rights and dignity to individuals while recognizing cultural distinctiveness. In response to the greater number of ethnic and religious minority groups, state policies seem to focus on managing cultural differences through planned pluralism. This book explores the dilemmas, paradoxes, and conflicts that emerge when differences are managed within this conceptual framework. After a critical investigation of the perceived logic of identity, indicative of Western nation-states and at the root of their pluralistic intentions, the author takes issue with both universalist notions of equality and cultural relativist notions of distinctiveness. However, without identity is it possible to participate in dialogue and form communities? Is there a way out of this impasse? The book argues in favor of communities based on nonidentitarian difference, developed and maintained through open and critical dialogue.Randi Gressgård is Associate Professor at the Centre for Women's and Gender Research (SKOK), University of Bergen. She is also affiliated with the research unit IMER (International Migration and Ethnic Relations).

Robert S. Taylor Reconstructing Rawls. The Kantian Foundations of Justice as Fairness

Reconstructing Rawls has one overarching goal: to reclaim Rawls for the Enlightenment-more specifically, the Prussian Enlightenment. Rawls's so-called political turn in the 1980s, motivated by a newfound interest in pluralism and the accommodation of difference, has been unhealthy for autonomy-based liberalism and has led liberalism more broadly toward cultural relativism, be it in the guise of liberal multiculturalism or critiques of cosmopolitan distributive-justice theories. Robert Taylor believes that it is time to redeem A Theory of Justice's implicit promise of a universalistic, comprehensive Kantian liberalism. Reconstructing Rawls on Kantian foundations leads to some unorthodox conclusions about justice as fairness, to be sure: for example, it yields a more civic-humanist reading of the priority of political liberty, a more Marxist reading of the priority of fair equality of opportunity, and a more ascetic or antimaterialist reading of the difference principle. It nonetheless leaves us with a theory that is still recognizably Rawlsian and reveals a previously untraveled road out of Theory-a road very different from the one Rawls himself ultimately followed.

Master's Thesis from the year 2011 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: 1,0, Oxford Brookes University, language: English, abstract: Global markets are changing faster than ever and increasing international competition makes it necessary for managers to understand not only the domestic culture but also the host country's culture. Derived from globalisation, successful cross-cultural management is gaining in importance and its need for understanding of cultural differences becomes essential. Because of this it is argued that, with the increasing importance of a cross-cultural understanding, Hofstede's (1980) model of cultural dimensions gains proportional importance and attracts notice at the same time. His study is widely used in global operating organisations within trainings and workshops. The first step of effective cross-cultural management is the awareness that cultural differences exist and domestic strategies might fail in host countries.Even though, Hofstede's (1980) cultural study is the most important one and widely known, there are many other cultural studies, which are only partly supporting his study. For each and every model of cultural identifications arouse praise and criticism and Hofstede was not spared by criticism. The main criticism refers to the methodology Hofstede used and many authors questioned its validity and reliability. Another major critique is that the nearly 40-years old survey f...

But in order to be truly enlightened in cultural matters a shadowless light is required. And as culture is part of the psychological architecture of man, the entire mental infrastructure needs to beillumined, for if one component of the whole casts a shadow, the entire mental architecture and with it the cultural contents will be affected and darkened and thus impair the desired uncorrupted cultural intelligence which can only blossom in a pristine, pure mind. This rather perfect state is that of mastership of culture, for it will only radiate the pristine purity of the mind in the outer world and soothe cultural tensions, wounds and conflicts.

Bryan S. Turner Vulnerability and Human Rights

The mass violence of the twentieth century's two world wars-followed more recently by decentralized and privatized warfare, manifested in terrorism, ethnic cleansing, and other localized forms of killing-has led to a heightened awareness of human beings' vulnerability and the precarious nature of the institutions they create to protect themselves from violence and exploitation. This vulnerability, something humans share amid the diversity of cultural beliefs and values that mark their differences, provides solid ground on which to construct a framework of human rights.Bryan Turner undertakes this task here, developing a sociology of rights from a sociology of the human body. His blending of empirical research with normative analysis constitutes an important step forward for the discipline of sociology. Like anthropology, sociology has traditionally eschewed the study of justice as beyond the limits of a discipline that pays homage to cultural relativism and the "value neutrality" of positivistic science. Turner's expanded approach accordingly involves a truly interdisciplinary dialogue with the literature of economics, law, medicine, philosophy, political science, and religion.

But how can organizations effectively transform themselves? Jaap Boonstra argues that it is not possible to achieve positive strategic change without cultural change, but cultural change is itself not a simple process. So what steps can leaders take in order to tackle cultural change successfully and what are meaningful change strategies? Offering a clear vision on organizational change, Cultural Change and Leadership in Organizations outlines the conditions and factors necessary for an organization’s positive strategic and cultural transformation. Boonstra explores the relationship between culture and leadership, and details ways to effectively combine and organize diverse approaches for strategic and cultural change within organizations. Throughout the text, he combines inspirational and conceptual material with practical examples and concrete interventions for planning and implementing these changes. The text is an invaluable addition for students of MBA and executive MBA programs, as well as a broad range of practitioners.

Walter Randolph Adams, John Palmer Hawkins Health Care in Maya Guatemala. Confronting Medical Pluralism in a Developing Country

When the traditional meets the modern, nowhere is the impact felt as personally as in the realm of health care. Because practitioners trained in Western science tend to ignore traditional medicine in developing countries, conflict is inevitable.Health Care in Maya Guatemala examines medical systems and institutions in three K'iche' Maya communities to reveal the conflicts between indigenous medical care and the Guatemalan biomedical system. The editors and contributors show how people in this rapidly modernizing society think about traditional practices-and reveal that health conditions in traditional communities deteriorate over time as long-standing medical practices erode in the face of Western encroachment. The contributors first consider cultural, institutional, and behavioral aspects of health care in Guatemala. Then they look closely at the nature and treatment of specific health issues, such as dentistry and mental health-especially depression. Finally they provide new insight on midwifery, nutrition, ethnomedicine, and other topics. As a whole, the volume proposes steps toward a health care system more accessible to Mayas, incorporating K'iche' concepts with Western thought. Representing trends seen throughout the world, it shows the necessity of cultural understanding if poor people are to have access to medicine that combines the best of both local tradition and international biomedicine. Although Western medicine continues to ignore the importance of...

In part because they have not yet won federal recognition as a tribe, the Yuchi are largely unknown among their non-Native neighbors and often misunderstood in scholarship. Jason Baird Jackson's Yuchi Folklore, the result of twenty years of collaboration with Yuchi people and one of just a handful of works considering their experience, brings Yuchi cultural expression to light.Yuchi Folklore examines expressive genres and customs that have long been of special interest to Yuchi people themselves. Beginning with an overview of Yuchi history and ethnography, the book explores four categories of cultural expression: verbal or spoken art, material culture, cultural performance, and worldview. In describing oratory, food, architecture, and dance, Jackson visits and revisits the themes of cultural persistence and social interaction, initially between Yuchi and other peoples east of the Mississippi and now in northeastern Oklahoma. The Yuchi exist in a complex, shifting relationship with the federally recognized Muscogee (Creek) Nation, with which they were removed to Indian Territory in the 1830s.Jackson shows how Yuchi cultural forms, values, customs, and practices constantly combine as Yuchi people ada...

The chances that we will live our lives interacting only with those who share our cultural identity and ways of thinking are shrinking. Understanding culture and how cultural difference affects how we understand one another and live well together is no longer just for travelers. It has become a basic life skill.Past Christian ways of thinking about cultural difference as most important for missions to far away places do not harmonize with today's realities. This book offers a brief, critical overview of how Christians have been rethinking their relationship to cultural difference. Creation and fall, the image of God, the body/temple that is the church, neighbor ethics, the trinity, the incarnation and cross of Christ, and the call to welcome strangers – each of these offers distinct challenges to think in Christian ways about how we deal with differences.Exploring the strengths and weaknesses of various approaches, this book provides a concise guide to current Christian discussions of otherness. It points to rich ways in which Christians can responsibly and graciously embrace cultural difference.

The literature gap revealed that no other research did this research fully with all cultural dimensions, HDI, and only in Europe. A longitudinal secondary quantitative study was done considering the latest 5 years of HDI scores from UNDP and a regression, descriptive analysis, and normality test was done to determine the impact. Data was collected through reputable primary sources online. The test revealed that only 3 of the cultural dimensions proved to have an impact on HDI. Power distance had a negative significant impact. Individualism and Indulgence had a significant positive impact. Three of the six null hypotheses were deemed true. This study can provide useful insights for businesses and academics that are looking towards the continent of Europe to further expand their cultural knowledge for various purposes.

Seminar paper from the year 2002 in the subject Business economics - Economic Policy, grade: 1.3 (A), University of Manchester (Manchester School of Management), 37 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: This paper adresses how the defence of local culture is becoming an increasing concern in the current era of globalisation, as diminishing transport costs and new forms of communication are enabling worldwide dissemination of products and ideas. The import of cultural goods from nations with disparate values and traditions is investigated, which could potentially cause the destabilisation of national or local communities. Indeed, these cultural goods may displace existing products and result in cultural homogenisation. Also, this paper looks at measures designed to protect culture which are exempt from WTO consideration and disputes between nations are negotiated bilaterally. As a result, fears that larger economies, such as the US, are able to dominate the cultural industries of smaller nations are investigated. Finally, this paper makes two main recommendations concerning domestic policy and concerning international trade policy. Through the development of a methodology which can develop agreements on more easily recognisable cultural interests - those less clouded by economic motivations - such a body would be able to tackle the more complex and problematic issues, with the aim of separating economic and political issues from genuine cultural concerns.

Master's Thesis from the year 2014 in the subject Cultural Studies - Miscellaneous, grade: ~1,2, University of Groningen (Faculty of Philosophy), language: English, comment: Note 8 (Niederlande) entspricht ~1,2 (Deutschland), abstract: Cultural citizenship is a new term to highlight that participating in society is not just a legal or political issue but has a cultural dimension as well. For example, citizens need stories, performances and role models to express who they are. In this Research Master Thesis, political philosopher Frederik Boven brings together authors from philosophy, sociology, anthropology, cultural studies and cultural policy. The authors include Paul Ricoeur, Will Kymlicka, Jeffrey Alexander, and Renato Rosaldo. Combining methods from transdisciplinary studies and cognitive linguistis, an agenda for is developed for a wide-ranging debate on cultural citizenship. This Research Master Thesis focuses on the Netherlands, where the relationship between culture and citizenship has become particularly contested in the beginning of the 21th century. Immigrants, especially Muslims, have seen their citizenship called in question. Dutch artists have faced severe budget cuts. As everywhere, gays and women struggle for respect and visibility in the public domain. Three recommendation are made to deal with these issues: (1) make culture equally accessible to all citizens; (2) protect the richness and viability of culture; (3) balance unity and diversity.

Seminar paper from the year 2013 in the subject Business economics - Marketing, Corporate Communication, CRM, Market Research, Social Media, grade: B-, University of Bedfordshire, course: MASTER OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION, language: English, abstract: This report is written on the topic of 'How does Cultural Differences matter when the companies from different cultures merge together? The scope of this report is broad as it incorporates the implications of cultural differences in relation to the cross-border strategic alliance. Corporate Culture is used as term to signify how the managers and the workers of particular organisation tend to behave. Many international companies (Nestlè and Shell) have long term commitment towards cultural awareness and normally accepted it as an integral part of their international practices. Cultural clash and its bottom line influence are usually complicated and hard to predict. Frequently, failure to anticipate cultural clash originated from the senior managers and dealmakers lack of awareness. Understanding the prediction and mitigation of negative influence of cultural differences should be a part of cross-border alliances agenda for all management levels. From the case study chapter it has been figured out that most of American cultural traits have seemed to have direct clash with the Swedes culture which is characterised by certain aspects: modesty, values of relationship, caring and the quality of life. Both countries determined to h...

Inhaltsangabe:Abstract: As the idea of Japan as a leader in management styles and the mythos 'collectivism' as a key to high quality performance and productivity is still in mind of German managers, this work tries to compare actual leadership styles of Japanese and German managers on the level of cultural dimensions. In the study the sample consisted of 119 persons in middle management positions (82 male and 37 female), 60 persons with work experience in Japan and 59 without experience. Participants were asked to complete a questionnaire regarding 52 leadership characteristics (e.g. the ability to assert oneself, to cooperate or to delegate) within five cultural dimensions. Participants then rated the importance of this characteristic for the specific category. Findings of the study showed significant differences in experienced and estimated management styles between the countries as well as significances regarding management traits of the german culture after working in Japan. Inhaltsangabe:Abstract: There is a wide body of evidence that suggests that the management of ‘human and cultural factors’ in post-M&A implementation is important and, where it is badly managed, helps to explain why up to two thirds of M&A deals are not deemed to be successful. This master dissertation discusses, investigates, and reports on research of essentials which make an integration process in mergers and acquisitions successful. The focus of the project is on the consideration of human resource management and cultural integration concerning the pre as well as post-M&A phase. Indeed, integration starts already in the pre-M&A phase with an intensive human capital and cultural due diligence. Thoroughly selected key employees and a highly skilled communication program might be fundamental keeping on the right track. The discussion about cultural integration includes cultural fit, cultural change and managing across national cultures in mergers and acquisitions. Furthermore, a comparison of international human resource management practices in mergers and acquisitions provides some interesting issues in that field. The factors discussed are based on a wide range of literature corroborated by some empirical findings published by international business consultants and scientists. Bachelor Thesis from the year 2016 in the subject American Studies - Culture and Applied Geography, grade: 1,0, Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, language: English, abstract: Cross-cultural exchanges serve the purpose of contributing to a cultural understanding, broadening the horizon and more. This leads to the understanding that two individuals with respective cultures encounter each other and explain their cultural peculiarities, meaning they will therefore benefit from the experience. This however presents a rather static understanding of culture, as it implies that each exchange is successful and goes without a problem. A successful exchange for hosts and exchange students relies on various factors such as tolerance, interest and adjustment on both sides, as two different cultures meet. The diversity of cultural theories has resulted from these factors, which have to be considered in order to resolve cultural misunderstandings and establish a relationship. In this paper, the focus will be on German-American relations through the lens of student exchanges in a High School setting and focus on the culture exchange and development of a relationship between the exchange students and their host families. The majority of the literature found as regard student exchanges concentrates on the students' perspective as to sharing their experiences and gain throughout this experience. Equally, previous interviews with host families focused on the exchange students' gain an...

Guy Senese Throwing Voices. Five Autoethnographies on Postradical Education and the Fine Art of Misdirection (PB)

This book is a search for the promises of public education and the places wherethese are broken by critics feeding at the academic and professional trough. This book is aventure in critical auto-ethnography, exploring critique through this ethnographic techniquehas allowed me to bring stories to the reader that work to illuminate the personal nature ofeducational ethics. It works to fill the gap in education critique where self-examination ismissing. It is a cultural study of five different educational environments. Research incultural studies attempts to account for cultural objects under conditions constrained bypower and defined by contestation, conflict, and change. Cultural Studies grapples with thevolatility of cultural happenings. Throwing Voices emphasizes self-reflexivity; an awarenessthat scholars and their scholarship are themselves caught up in the social currents and in theglobal circulation of meanings being studied. In taking up questions from this perspective, cultural studies both draws on and develops key strands of contemporary cultural theory: semiotics, deconstruction andpoststructuralism, dialogics, subaltern and postcolonial studies . The field also draws on and develops a number of innovativemethodologies: autoethnography, blurred genres of writing, and other new forms of critical research.Within, I pay homage to satirist Lenny Bruce, and it earned me a one way ticket to scholarly palookaville. Master's Thesis from the year 2017 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: 1,7, Buckinghamshire New University, language: English, abstract: The aim of this study is to identify and evaluate the cultural challenges within organisational leadership imposed by their internationalisation activities. This dissertation aims to create an understanding for the relevance of cultural differences within the internationalisation process. It does so by analysing the cultural differences between the German and Swedish construction supply industries. The research question is; what are the cultural challenges related to leadership that organisations face when doing business in foreign countries. I discuss this question based on the analysis of the contemporary academic literature, whereby Hofstede's cultural model is considered. Semi-structured expert interviews were used to analyse the current cultural situation in both industries as well as to evaluate the findings of the theory. In conclusion, the analysis of the German and Swedish construction supply industries showed a significant difference between the contemporary literature and the primary findings of this thesis. Certain aspects of the cultural dimensions of both industries did not correspond to the literature's view of each country's culture. Although both industries are similar they show differences, which are recognised within the approach to leadership. Cultural chan...

Dr. Iqbal Md Mostafa Migration of Farm Workers to Rural Scotland. Equality, Cultural Capital and the Process of Social and Cultural Transitions

The migration of farm workers to rural Scotland is an important issue that relates to the existing theories and research in contemporary equality and cultural capital studies, particularly in regard to the exploration of how and in what ways cultural capital theory can be addressed to study migrants equality claims, the examination of how complex equality models can be used for inquiry into the reinforcement of inequalities in cultural capital and the accumulative effects of such inequality. In particular, the experiences of East European migrant farm workers challenge theoretical perspectives that apply a) an approach of equality claim from cultural capital, which emphasize b) equal right to recognition, and therefore, c) focus on entitlement to equal protection against any discrimination. This book, therefore, offers us a way to explore these experiences with a call for attention to be paid to a large number of East European migrant farm workers who have migrated to rural Scotland to work in low paid jobs marked with low skills. Unlike majority members of a population, migrant farm workers often give up their cultural capital and take up low skilled jobs in order to gain opportunities for success in other spheres in their lives. Critiquing such a trade-off approach, if the sphere of migrants cultural capital is invaded and the cultural capital of local workers (native) is acknowledged, migrants are in a vulnerable position. I also argue although migrants achievements are de...

The literary theory Literature as Cultural Ecology implies the notion that literature, in imaginatively bringing together various discourses, may release new potential for the extra-textual, cultural world. Why and in what way do the postmodern American novels E.L. Doctorow, The Book of Daniel and T.C. Boyle, The Tortilla Curtain act like ecological forces within their culture? They serve as metaphorical cultural ecosystems. The cultural ecology of each of the two novels is revealed in a combination of the three discourses cultural-critical metadiscourse, imaginative counter-discourse, and reintegrative inter-discourse. The Book of Daniel and The Tortilla Curtain gain a unique status in that they have the power to interact with their readers and may serve as a source of cultural self-exploration, self-preservation, and self-renewal.This book addresses students of literature and literary scholars as well as everybody else interested in an evolutionary, reflective process of reading.

Ali Ahmed Teaching English using local cultural contents

Cultural contents that represent typical cultural practices of the home society are rarely found in EFL textbooks. As a consequence, the teachers' practices of teaching the language using local cultural contents were limited. Likewise, the learners' engagement in learning the target language through cultural contents that typically represent their home society are lacking. It adheres the data gathered through textbook analysis. The textbooks included local cultural contents in attempts to give local cultural flavor when the target language or global cultural contents were intended to be presented. Such an approach might be appropriate to involve learners in the language learning process through comparing and contrasting their own cultural practices with the target language or global cultural practices. However, it limited the potential of home cultural contents and the scope of learners' engagement in doing various tasks through activating different features of their cultural background.

Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2014 in the subject Sociology - Culture, Technology, Peoples / Nations, , language: English, abstract: This paper explores the role of culture and its relationships in helicopter accidents based on the cultural differences between two different countries. Helicopter operations in Nigeria and the UK share many common features including a prominent offshore oil industry that places heavy demands on helicopter transport, but they differ in terms of the cultural context within which these operations take place. Nigeria shows themes associated with high cultural context. The UK, themes were predominately associated with low cultural context. Air accident investigation reports were subjected to an in-depth theme-based content analysis in order to distil the role of culture in their causation. This analysis was selected as the means by which to extract cultural factors from the reports and variables influencing human error leading to accidents. Text and cluster analysis was used as an exploratory tool to observe patterns by grouping the nodes that shared similar themes. The study shows two key findings. First, the sampled UK and Nigerian accident reports differ in respect to weak and strong uncertainty avoidance. Secondly, and more importantly, cultural factors, although not currently well represented in accident analysis were prominent in the sampled accident reports.
