Maladjustments of foreign-born students and immigrants have for so long remained understudied and inadequately understood. This volume is, therefore, a unique contribution to foreign-born students’ (FBS’) adjustment challenges at community colleges in the north-eastern United States. It represents a profoundly strategic attempt to uncover the root cause of foreign-born students’ and even immigrants’ post-migration adjustment challenges in a foreign land, based on previously underexplored psycho-cultural factors outlined in this book. The study employed both quantitative and qualitative approaches to examine this research problem: It examined the influence of six (three-compound) factors in major areas of adjustment by FBSs. Also, it specifically identified and explored the influence of those factors on FBSs’ adjustment on college campuses and their possible explanations. This title will certainly open up new vistas in the assessment and evaluation of foreign-born students at high school, college and university levels not only in the United States but also across the globe. It is a book that every school, college and university administrator, counselor, teacher, educator and policymaker must read or rue.

The four chapters review recent trends in college attendance and mental and physical health problems of college students, classic and contemporary theories of college student development (such as Chickering's seven vectors of development), and techniques for studying student adjustment, targeting five domains of adjustment most relevant to college students. The final chapter provides an overview of the unique adjustment challenges of ethnic minority students adjusting to predominantly white colleges as well as the adjustment process for minority students attending historically black colleges and universities. This book is aimed at advanced undergraduates, graduate students, and scholars in the fields of psychology, human development, and higher education who are interested in understanding the process of college adjustment. It is also an excellent starting point for scholars who may wish to design their own study of college students and their adjustment challenges.

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2016 in the subject American Studies - Culture and Applied Geography, grade: 1,0, Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, language: English, abstract: Cross-cultural exchanges serve the purpose of contributing to a cultural understanding, broadening the horizon and more. This leads to the understanding that two individuals with respective cultures encounter each other and explain their cultural peculiarities, meaning they will therefore benefit from the experience. This however presents a rather static understanding of culture, as it implies that each exchange is successful and goes without a problem. A successful exchange for hosts and exchange students relies on various factors such as tolerance, interest and adjustment on both sides, as two different cultures meet. The diversity of cultural theories has resulted from these factors, which have to be considered in order to resolve cultural misunderstandings and establish a relationship. In this paper, the focus will be on German-American relations through the lens of student exchanges in a High School setting and focus on the culture exchange and development of a relationship between the exchange students and their host families. The majority of the literature found as regard student exchanges concentrates on the students' perspective as to sharing their experiences and gain throughout this experience. Equally, previous interviews with host families focused on the exchange students' gain an...

Project Report from the year 2014 in the subject Sociology - Communication, grade: A, The Hague University, course: Master in International Communication, language: English, abstract: When students are traveling to study abroad, they may face different issues such as loneliness, isolation, discrimination that may affect their academic performance and cause stress and mental health problems directly or indirectly.Di Tommaso and Spinner found out that integration into social networks is the best predictor of lower levels of social loneliness. Universities provide support for international students and it is intended to facilitate an optimal (from the point of view of the universities) academic and social adjustment, however, causing boring and lonely social life 'outside the classroom' and feeling a lack of belonging contribute to their sense of alienation in the host society.Due to the heavy study load and stress and because of lack of time, international students tend to have more in-door activities. It is possible to overcome barriers to minority success in Canada. The stance of this book is that new immigrants, refugees and international students do not have to settle for underachievement despite the cultural and structural disadvantages they face in Canada. The fact is, the unequal social structure of Canada has some cracks, and many minorities have used strategic resources to open up these cracks and achieved tremendous upward social mobility in Canadian society from the margins. These documented minority successes in Canada in the face of systemic marginalization provide lessons and hope for new immigrants, refugees and international students. The economic, political, social and cultural problems that minorities encounter in Canadian institutions, organizations, communities and from individuals overwhelm and break many of them. However, some minorities break records in the face of the frustrations they encounter. What accounts for the success of the latter group of immigrants, refugees and international students in Canada? Individual efforts and personal ambitions are not enough to explain these success stories. This book highlights strategies and support systems that facilitate minority strategic connections with Canadian mainstream institutions, organizations and individuals to win from the margins of society.Although the book does not get into the theories of inequality, equity and diversity, it does acknowledge the structural and cultural barriers to minority succ...

Looking at Scripture through the lens of cultural anthropology is related to social-scientific criticism, which refers to that phase of the exegetical task that analyzes the social and cultural dimensions of the text and its environmental context through the utilization of the perspectives, theories, models, and research of the social sciences.Kuhn discusses general matters garnered from cultural-anthropology interpretation that would be relevant for the study of biblical texts. He analyzes several biblical specific texts from a cultural-anthropology perspective and provides conclusions, challenges, and considerations for the future of cultural anthropology and biblical interpretation.

Julia Kristeva is one of the most creative and prolific writers to address the personal, social, and political trials of our times. Linguist, psychoanalyst, social and cultural theorist, and novelist, Kristeva's broad interdisciplinary appeal has impacted areas across the humanities and social sciences. S. K. Keltner's book provides the first comprehensive introduction to the breadth of Kristeva's work. In an original and insightful analysis, Keltner presents Kristeva's thought as the coherent development and elaboration of a complex, multidimensional threshold constitutive of meaning and subjectivity. The ‘threshold' indicates Kristeva's primary sphere of concern, the relationship between the speaking being and its particular social and historical conditions; and Kristeva's interdisciplinary approach. Kristeva's vision, Keltner argues, opens a unique perspective within contemporary discourses attentive to issues of meaning, subjectivity, and social and political life. By emphasizing Kristeva's attention to the permeable borders of psychic and social life, Keltner offers innovative readings of the concepts most widely discussed in Kristeva scholarship: the semiotic and symbolic, abjection, love, and loss. She also provides new interpretations of some of the most controversial issues surrounding Kristeva's work, including Kristeva's conceptions of intimacy, social and cultural difference, and Oedipal subjectivity, by contextualizing them within her methodological approach and oeuvre as a whole. Julia Kristeva: Thresholds is an engaging and accessible introduction to Kristeva's theoretical and fictional works that will be of interest to both students and scholars across the humanities and social sciences.

The thesis investigates the concept and measurement of social capital in university settings by applying a literature review. Thus, this study analyses the present and past literature by a systematic literature search and suggesting a model that connects students' backgrounds, social capital at university and students' learning achievements. Finally, results are presented and discussed, which show that all three dimensions of social capital influence students learning achievements in higher educational settings. However, not all specific components influence the different variables in the same manner and some have no influence. Furthermore, recommendations and directions for further research are provided. In sum, the study finds that a student's social capital, generated from his or her social relations with parents, teachers and other peers, has a significant influence on the learning achievements.

Immigration is an important social change which requires special attention because of its direct impact on socio-cultural and family contexts. As their parents, immigrant children experience profound life changes due to separation from significant others and more broadly defined social networks. The present book provides data on psychosocial outcomes of immigrant children in Italy, where similarly to other European countries, the percentage of immigrant groups is in constant increase. Psychological and social adjustment domains in three ethnic groups were investigated, as well as the unique contribution of ethnic background on children's family drawings. The findings indicate that immigrant children present more adjustment difficulties than their native peers and that family composition developed in the context of parent-child relationships in terms of proximity, similarity and value between self and parental figures relate to drawing outcome in specific ways for Albanian, Serbian and Italian groups.

Performativity has emerged as a critical new idea across the humanities and social sciences, from literary and cultural studies to the study of gender and the philosophy of action. In this volume, Jeffrey Alexander demonstrates how performance can reorient our study of politics and society. Alexander develops a cultural pragmatics that shifts cultural sociology from texts to gestural meanings. Positioning social performance between ritual and strategy, he lays out the elements of social performance – from scripts to mise-en-scène, from critical mediation to audience reception – and systematically describes their tense interrelation. This is followed by a series of empirically oriented studies that demonstrate how cultural pragmatics transforms our approach to power. Alexander brings his new theory of social performance to bear on case studies that range from political to cultural power: Barack Obama's electoral campaign, American failure in the Iraqi war, the triumph of the Civil Rights Movement, terrorist violence on September 11th, public intellectuals, material icons, and social science itself. This path-breaking work by one of the world's leading social theorists will command a wide interdisciplinary readership.

A rendering of poetic pedagogy is the heart of this book. The book is contextualized by conversations with nursing students and professors within the Faculty of Nursing, University of Calgary, Alberta, Canada. This books traces conversations with students and professors about how the poetry of Bronwen Wallace has impacted their experiences of nursing education. The interpretation of the conversations was guided by philosophical hermeneutics. The students? experiences of the poetry are interpreted as unique and lush experiential understandings. This book explores and draws forth the potential of these understandings for professional education, and suggests that the possibilities for a pedagogical space may be characterized by such indelible characteristics as surprise; imagination, emotion, paradox; polyphony and the importance of particulars. The intent of this book is not to say this is all there is and ever will be of poetic pedagogy. Rather, poetic pedagogy will continue to take its shape through its possibilities of being integrated into other professional education settings, such as social work, education, and medicine.

Documenting nursing care provided to patients is an essential component of the nursing profession and it is best achieved through a nursing care plan. A nursing care plan is used to document and communicate nursing care. In the care of patients, each patient is regarded as unique. Therefore, a care plan demonstrates individualized patient care that is, care based upon changing and revised patient needs and coping abilities reflected in diagnoses, goals and interventions in the physical, psychological and socio-cultural areas of functioning. Furthermore, it helps professional nursing staffs to refine their understanding of nursing diagnoses and charting skills, to identify nursing problems in need of care and propose appropriate care plans. Despite the aforesaid advantages, nursing care plans remain largely unutilized by nurses in many healthcare institutions. This study sought to identify those factors (nursing work characteristics, nurse' characteristics, nursing administration characteristics, and care plan characteristics) that hinder nurses from using nursing care plans. This will help the nursing fraternity to improve documenting care in nursing care plans.

Barry Barnes The Elements of Social Theory

Over the past quarter century, social theory has moved in diverse and often seemingly incompatible directions, exaggerating differences of approach that existed even in earlier periods. In a strikingly original book, Barry Barnes uses this intellectual diversity not only to identify but also to unify the central ways of looking at the field. Barnes frames his task by addressing the most important problem confronting all students of society today: the apparent conflict between cultural and functional methods of describing the social order, on one hand, and choice-theoretic accounts, on the other. But rather than reviewing in detail the origins and development of these contending views of reality, Barnes conducts a dialogue between the two perspectives, thereby revealing their respective strengths and shortcomings. In the process, he develops a case for a theoretical "third way," an interactionist understanding of the workings of the social order and the emergence of behavioral norms.Barnes successfully applies interactionist analysis, formerly used mostly for micro-social settings, to macro-phenomena like the formation of status groups, the origin of social movements, the politics of class formation, and the dynamics of bureaucratic action. He shows how these phenomena are inexplicable in terms of exclusively cultural- functional or choice-theoretic methods: they can be understood only by showing how norms emerge through interaction. Barnes has constructed a coherent a...

The Anthropology of Moralities

Anthropologists have been keenly aware of the tension between cultural relativism and absolute norms, and nowhere has this been more acute than with regards to moral values. Can we study the Other's morality without applying our own normative judgments? How do social anthropologists keep both the distance required by science and the empathy required for the analysis of lived experiences? The plurality of moralities has not received an explicit and focused attention until recently, when accelerated globalization often resulted in the collision of different value systems. Observing, describing and assessing values cross-culturally, the authors propose various methodological approaches to the study of moralities, illustrated with rich ethnographic accounts, thus offering a valuable guide for students of anthropology, sociology and cultural studies and for professionals concerned with the empirical and cross-cultural study of values.

The enlargement of the European Union in 2004 brought for Polish immigrants to the UK new opportunities and challenges in terms of social and cultural adjustment. Cultural diversity in the UK is, for many Poles, a new experience as Poland is a relatively homogenous country. This book gives an insight into attitudes among recent Polish immigrants towards ethnicity and 'race'. The author investigates the historical, social and emotional contexts of those perceptions and argues that psychosocial dynamics are at the core of peoples' attitudes towards other ethnic groups. Thus, stereotyping and prejudices are present regardless of socio-economic background. However, the author suggests that perceptions of 'racial' inequality in the UK have an impact on Poles attitudes towards non white citizens. The book will be of particular interest to researchers and students in the fields of sociology, ethnic minorities studies, identity and migration, and European studies.

Scott Lash Experience. New Foundations for the Human Sciences

This book is a radical plea for the centrality of experience in the social and human sciences. Lash argues that a large part of the output of the social sciences today is still shaped by assumptions stemming from positivism, in contrast to the tradition of interpretative social enquiry pioneered by Max Weber. These assumptions are particularly central to economics, with its emphasis on homo economicus, the utility-maximizing actor, but they have infiltrated the other social sciences too. Lash argues for a social sciences based not in positivism’s utilitarian a priori but instead in the a posteriori of grounded and embedded subjective experience. His wide-ranging account starts from considerations of ancient experience via Aristotle’s technics, continues through a politics of Hannah Arendt’s ‘a posteriori’ public sphere and concludes with the contemporary – with technological experience, on the one hand, and with Chinese post-ontological thought, in which the ‘ten thousand things’ themselves are doing the experiencing, on the other. This original book by a leading social and cultural theorist will be of great interest to students and scholars in sociology, cultural studies and throughout the social sciences.
