Fully integrating sustainability into a corporate strategy has progressively become the ubiquitous norm. However, designing a credible, effective sustainability strategy still appears to be a challenging task and lacking employee support frequently labels the strategies as insignificant public relations practices. As the awareness for sustainability issues prevails, the call for a substantial paradigm shift in corporate mindsets emerges: For any sustainability strategy to be successful, the affected employees need to be aligned and engaged behind it. Human Resource Development (HRD) as proper training enabler for such strategies offers important voice and expertise to realize the true satisfaction of sustainability ambitions. At the present time of globalization and due to the critical need to consider environmental, social, and financial consequences of business operations, the sustainability movement cannot be considered a passing trend. Since HRD is expected to play a facilitative role in establishing corporate sustainability, this work proposes theoretical approaches linking HRD with sustainability and corporate responsibility. The empirical purpose of this study is to investigate the current engagement of HRD in the field, examining one fundamental question: Assuming that employees are key success factors for sustainability strategies, how can HRD professionals and departments ensure that sustainable behavior will be part of all members of a company?Drawing from qualitati...

Thus, sustainability initiatives launched by companies may not always provide value for consumers or even encourage consumers for more sustainable behavior. The purpose of this manuscript is to identify those sustainability initiatives that are valued by consumers. As sustainability initiatives are dependent on the type of the product, the scope of this manuscript is limited to mobile phones and to the sustainability initiatives available for mobile phone manufacturers. However, it must be noted that the results may be applied also to other consumer electronics, which have similarities with mobile phones and mobile phone manufacturing.

This book describes how to bring that focus to your design from the earliest stages. Understand the fundamentals of regenerative design and development Learn how regenerative development contributes to sustainability Integrate regenerative development concepts into practice Examine sample designs that embody the regenerative concept To create a design with true sustainability, considerations must extend far beyond siting, materials, and efficiency. Designers must look at the place, it's inhabitants, and the purpose—the whole living ecosystem—and proceed with their work from that more humbling perspective. The finished product should itself be an ecosystem and sustainable economy, which is the root of the regenerative development approach. Sustainability has evolved, and the designer's responsibility has increased in kind. Now deeply rooted in the public conscience, sustainability has put its stamp on various institutions and sectors, from national to local governments, from agriculture to tourism, and from manufacturing to resource management. Seminar paper from the year 2011 in the subject Business economics - Investment and Finance, grade: 1,3, International University of Applied Sciences Bad Honnef - Bonn, course: Current Issues in Accounting and Finance, language: English, abstract: In a time, where globalization and global prosperity foster a continuous chasing after outstanding business success, environmental and social aspects are more and more taking a back seat in the decision-making processes of organizations. With a world population of nearly seven billion people and an expected growth to more than nine billion people by the year 2050 (UN, 2008), the urgency to preserve the resources of the world is now greater than ever. Due to this global situation, the importance of corporate sustainability as an integral part of organizations' strategic directions is increasing gradually. Additionally, customers' growing awareness for environmentally friendly products and actions is further boosting the pressure on companies to act in a sustainable manner.Although first steps towards an eco-friendly future have been done in the fields of mobility and efficient consumption of energy and materials, continuous improvements in environmental and social aspects are crucial. Responding to external pressure, corporations have started to implement sustainability in their businesses. However, some firms are being accused of pursuing a sustainability strategy only, to satisfy expectations of the public society. Although...

Master's Thesis from the year 2018 in the subject Business economics - General, grade: 1,6, Blekinge Institute of Technology (Strategic Sustainability), language: English, abstract: The current global economic paradigm, centred on growth, is a significant barrier in the transition towards a sustainable society. Business-as-Usual companies operating within this paradigm are perceived to prosper at the expense of society and environment which is not viable on a finite planet. The need to rethink the purpose of business is inevitable as maximising shareholder value, has been deemed insufficient to create a sustainable society. This study aimed to explore: how business models can be used to create value that supports Strategic Sustainable Development. Previous research proposed that the concept of Business Models for Sustainability helps business place sustainability at the core of all consideration. A qualitative research was chosen for which we employed the Framework for Strategic Sustainable Development and combined a literature review with an investigation of three expert groups to answer our research question. Our findings showed that, compared to other value forms, system value is the most appropriate concept for businesses striving towards sustainable development. Based on our findings, six themes emerged that businesses need to address to accelerate the speed of change towards sustainability. Sustainability reporting provides nonfinancial and financial indicators of an organization's environmental, economic, and social dimensions of its operations. The globalization of corporations and widely publicized corporate misdeeds (e.g., Nike's child labor problems) has increased public scrutiny of corporate behavior. As pressure grows from a variety of stakeholders (e.g., investors, creditors, customers, and NGOs) for corporate transparency, sustainability reports provide vital information to meet the demand for disclosures about environmental, economic, and social impacts. In addition to addressing stakeholders' demands, this reporting enhances internal decision-making. Managers are better able to assess risks, monitor company resources, establish competitive advantage, create employee loyalty, and engage stakeholders. This book is intended for MBA students, executives, and managers who want to learn about the value of sustainability reporting. In this book, they will discover the internal and external benefits of sustainability reporting, the basics of existing reporting frameworks, and the reaction of the investment community. Detailed examples of sustainability metrics from numerous organizations are provided to illustrate the Global Reporting Initiative Sustainability Reporting Guidelines. This book will enable readers to assess how reporting can add value for his or her own organization.

Many economists have argued that prolonged fiscal expansions contribute to current account imbalances. The purpose of this work is to explore this phenomenon in the case of Sub-Saharan Africa countries during the period 1980 to 2007. In the framework of panel cointegration test, panel VAR Granger Causality analysis and a reduced-form consumption function, this work tries to evaluate the validity of the conventional (Keynesian) view and the Ricardian Equivalence Hypothesis (the link between the twin deficits) in two groups of Sub-Saharan Africa countries: Oil importing and Oil exporting economies. The findings of this work would help policy makers and planners in managing deficits based on the direction of causation. It also triggers interested researchers in the area to inquire further about the issue.

The drive towards environmentally friendly buildings and infrastructure has led to a growing interest in providing design solutions underpinned by the core principles of sustainability to balance economic, social and environmental factors. Design Economics for the Built Environment: Impact of sustainability on project evaluation presents new directions, reflecting the need to recognise the impact of climate change and the importance of sustainability in project evaluation. The aim is to provide a new approach to understanding design economics in the context of the changing policy environment, legislative and regulatory framework, and increasing economic, environmental and social pressure as result of the sustainability agenda. The book follows a structured approach from theories and principles in the earlier chapters, to the practical applications and emerging techniques focusing on value and social, economic and environmental considerations in making design decisions. It starts with the policy context, building on various theories and principles such as, capital cost, value of design and resource-based theories, the new rules of measurement (NRM) to explore cost planning, the relationship between height and costs, key socio-economic and environmental variables for design appraisal, eco-cost/value ratio (EVR), whole life theory and the treatment of carbon emission as external costs, productivity and efficiency, fiscal drivers and legal framework for carbon reduction, procurement and allocation of risks in contracts. Case studies, practical examples and frameworks throughout reinforce theories and principles and relate them to current practice. The book is essential reading for postgraduate students in architecture, building and quantity surveying and is also a valuable resource for academics, consultants and policy-makers in the built environment.

The concept of sustainability holds that the social, economic, and environmental factors within human communities must be viewed interactively and systematically. Sustainable development cannot be understood apart from a community, its ethos, and ways of life. Although broadly conceived, the pursuit of sustainable development is a local practice because every community has different needs and quality of life concerns. Within this framework, contributors representing the disciplines of anthropology, sociology, geography, economics, law, public policy, architecture, and urban studies explore sustainability in communities in the Pacific, Latin America, Sub-Saharan Africa, Eastern Europe, and North America.

Companies are developing strategies to realize value based upon the concept of sustainability. Businesses recognize that sustainability can create a strategic advantage, and can become instrumental to their long-term viability. The concept has dramatically expanded the scope of measuring organizational performance into the economic, social, and environmental components that are often referred to collectively as the "triple bottom line." Organizations are discovering that specific products and processes can have profound environmental and social implications besides normal economic benefits. Within this context, organizational decision-makers must contend with numerous stakeholder issues, pressure from environmental agencies, and increased social consciousness that affects workers, consumers, and communities. These factors must be balanced by a reasonable return on investment and long-term organizational success. The interaction between these conflicting pressures and barriers makes it difficult for organizations to adopt sustainability strategies.
